The protonation constants of 4-methylbenzylidenepyruvate (4Me-BP) and 4-isopropylbenzylidenepyruvate (4IP-BP) as well as the stability constants of their binary 1:1 complexes with Cu(II), La(III), Pr(III), Sm(III), Eu(III), Yb(III), Sc(III) and Th(IV) have been determined spectrophotometrically in aqueous solution at 25°C and ionic strength 0.500 M, maintained with sodium perchlorate. For all metal ions considered, the stability changes move in the same direction as the pKa of the ligands. Linear free energy relationships, as applied to oxygen donor substances, suggest the -COCOO- moiety as the metal binding site of the ligands. The results are discussed mainly taking into account that benzylidenepyruvates, besides the α-keto canonical form, may display other forms in aqueous solution with changing pH and the possible occurrence of extra intra-ligand charge polarization, induced by metal ions.

Undoped and indium-doped Zinc oxide (ZnO) solid films were deposited by the pyrosol process at 450°C on glass substrates from solutions where In/Zn ratio was 2, 5, and 10 at.%. Electrical measurements performed at room temperature show that the addition of indium changes the resistance of the films. The resistivities of doped films are less than non-doped ZnO films by one to two orders of magnitude depending on the dopant concentration in the solution. Preferential orientation of the films with the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate was detected by X-ray diffraction and polarized extended X-ray absorption fine structures measurements at the Zn K edge. This orientation depends on the indium concentration in the starting solution. The most textured films were obtained for solutions where In/Zn ratio was 2 and 5 at.%. When In/Zn = 10 at.%, the films had a nearly random orientation of crystallites. Evidence of the incorporation of indium in the ZnO lattice was obtained from extended X-ray absorption fine structures at the In and Zn K edges. The structural analysis of the least resistive film (Zn/In = 5 at.%) shows that In substitutes Zn in the wurtzite structure. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the Ti-35Nb-7Zr experimental alloy after surface treatment and soaking in solution body fluid (SBF) to form bonelike apatite. The Ti-35Nb-7Zr alloy was produced from commercially pure materials (Ti, Nb and Zr) by an arc melting furnace. All ingots were submitted to sequences of heat treatment (1100 °C/2 h and water quenching), cold working by swaging procedures and heat treatment (1100 °C/2 h and water quenching). Discs with 13 mm diameter and 3 mm in thickness were cut. The samples were immersed in NaOH aqueous solution with 5 M at 60 °C for 72 h, washed with distilled water and dried at 40 °C for 24 h. After the alkaline treatment, samples were heat treated in both conditions: at 450 and 600 °C for 1 h in an electrical furnace in air. Then, they were soaking in SBF for 24 h to form an apatite layer on the surface. The surfaces were investigated by using scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and contact angle measurements. The results indicate that calcium phosphate could form on surface of Ti-35Nb-7Zr experimental alloy. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

CaSnO3 and SrSnO3 alkaline earth stannate thin films were prepared by chemical solution deposition using the polymeric precursor method on various single crystal substrates (R- and C-sapphire and 100-SrTiO3) at different temperatures. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (θ-2θ, ω- and φ-scans), field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence. Epitaxial SrSnO3 and CaSnO 3 thin films were obtained on SrTiO3 with a high crystalline quality. The long-range symmetry promoted a short-range disorder which led to photoluminescence in the epitaxial films. In contrast, the films deposited on sapphire exhibited a random polycrystalline growth with no meaningful emission regardless of the substrate orientation. The network modifier (Ca or Sr) and the substrate (sapphire or SrTiO3) influenced the crystallization process and/or the microstructure. Higher is the tilts of the SnO6 octahedra, as in CaSnO3, higher is the crystallization temperature, which changed also the nucleation/grain growth process. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this work, the electrochemical behavior of Cu-16(wt.%)Zn-6.5(wt.%)Al alloy containing the β'-phase (martensite) was studied in borate buffer solution (pH 8.4) by means of open-circuit potential (EOC), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The alloy EOC was -0.29 V vs. Hg/HgO/OH-, similar to that of pure copper in this medium, indicating that the processes which occur on the alloy surface are mainly governed by copper. EIS response was related to the dielectric and transmission properties of the complex oxide layer. The CVs showed peaks concerning the redox reactions for copper and zinc. These peaks were assigned to the formation and reduction of copper and zinc species. Furthermore, they showed that the copper oxidation was suppressed by the presence of zinc and aluminum in the alloy composition. The copper and zinc oxidation to form complex oxide layers and the reduction of the different metallic oxides generated in the anodic potential scan suggest that a solid state reaction could determine the metallic oxide formation. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Thermal and spectroscopic studies on solid trivalent lanthanides and yttrium(III) α-hydroxyisobutyrates, Ln(C4H7O 3)3·nH2O were investigated employing simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), elemental analysis, X-ray diffractometry, complexometry, experimental and theoretical infrared spectroscopy and TG-DSC coupled to FTIR. The dehydration of lanthanum to neodymium and terbium to thulium and yttrium compounds occurs in a single step while for samarium, europium and gadolinium ones it occurs in three consecutives steps. Ytterbium and lutetium compounds were obtained in the anhydrous state. The thermal decomposition of the anhydrous compounds occursin two consecutives steps, except lanthanum (five steps) and cerium (single step), with formation of the respective oxides CeO2, Pr6O 11, Tb4O7 and Ln2O3 (Ln = La, Nd to Lu and Y), as final residue. The resultsalso provided information concerning the composition, thermal behavior, crystallinity and gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition. The theoretical and experimental spectroscopic data suggested the possible modes of coordination of the ligand with the lanthanides.© 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The corrosion behaviour of metal matrix composites (MMCs) is strictly linked with the presence of heterogeneities such as reinforcement phase, microcrevices, porosity, secondary phase precipitates, and interaction products. Most of the literature related to corrosion behaviour of aluminium matrix composites (AMCs) is focused on SiC reinforced AMCs. On the other hand, there is very limited information available in the literature related to the tribocorrosion behaviour of AMCs. Therefore, the present work aims to investigate corrosion and tribocorrosion behaviour of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy matrix composites reinforced with B4C particulates. Corrosion behaviour of 15 and 19% (vol) B4C reinforced Al-Si-Cu-Mg matrix composites and the base alloy was investigated in 0.05M NaCl solution by performing immersion tests and potentiodynamic polarisation tests. Tribocorrosion behaviour of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy and its composites were also investigated in 0.05M NaCl solution. The tests were carried out against alumina ball using a reciprocating ball-on-plate tribometer. Electrochemical measurements were performed before, during, and after the sliding tests together with the recording of the tangential force. Results suggest that particle addition did not affect significantly the tendency of corrosion of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy without mechanical interactions. During the tribocorrosion tests, the counter material was found to slide mainly on the B4C particles, which protected the matrix alloy from severe wear damage. Furthermore, the wear debris were accumulated on the worn surfaces and entrapped between the reinforcing particles. Therefore, the tendency of corrosion and the corrosion rate decreased in Al-Si-Cu-Mg matrix B4C reinforced composites during the sliding in 0.05M NaCl solution. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

In prosthesis, tribochemical reactions occur at the stem/bone interface. When coupled with micromotions it can lead to the loosening of the implant, osteolysis, release of metal ion and wear particles. The effect of these movements and the underlying mechanisms are quite unknown. This work investigates the tribocorrosion behavior of etched Ti6Al4V alloys under reciprocating sliding. Tests were performed in a phosphate buffer solution (PBS) containing proteins. A normal load of 1 N and anodic potentials of -0.1 and +0.5 V/SCE were applied. The destruction pathways of the top surface layers (adsorbed proteins, passive film) were studied. The results showed that the favorable/undesired effect of proteins in solution depends on the characteristics of the passive film under a mechanical stress. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
