Transversal vibrations induced by a load moving uniformly along an infinite beam resting on a piece-wise homogeneous visco-elastic foundation are studied. Special attention is paid to the additional vibrations, conventionally referred to as transition radiations, which arise as the point load traverses the place of foundation discontinuity. The governing equations of the problem are solved by the normalmode analysis. The solution is expressed in a form of infinite sum of orthogonal natural modes multiplied by the generalized coordinate of displacement. The natural frequencies are obtained numerically exploiting the concept of the global dynamic stiffness matrix. This ensures that the frequencies obtained are exact. The methodology has restrictions neither on velocity nor on damping. The approach looks simple, though, the numerical expression of the results is not straightforward. A general procedure for numerical implementation is presented and verified. To illustrate the utility of the methodology parametric optimization is presented and influence of the load mass is studied. The results obtained have direct application in analysis of railway track vibrations induced by high-speed trains when passing regions with significantly different foundation stiffness.

Nesta dissertação de Mestrado, pretende-se contribuir para o conhecimento no âmbito das patologias da ferrovia, nomeadamente no que se refere a patologias em carril, balastro, travessas e elementos de fixação, tendo sido coletado neste trabalho as mais variadas patologias da ferrovia balastrada bem como a sua catalogação socioeconómica, permitindo com essa enumeração tomadas de decisão coerentes e assertivas no que respeita a recomendações a efetuar tanto como diagnostico como para manutenção. O trabalho inicia-se por uma introdução relativa ao aparecimento da ferrovia num contexto internacional, particularizando posteriormente o caso de Portugal até ao estado da arte atual, com um pequeno desenvolvimento a nível socie-económico com as grandes obras e projetos para os próximos anos. Para além da síntese de conhecimentos referida, apresentou-se um pouco da atualidade ferroviária de alguns países com relevância, quer por associação fronteiriça quer por desenvolvimento tecnológico. Apresenta-se brevemente os componentes mais importantes da ferrovia balastrada com especial destaque para os elementos da superestrutura de via, nos quais se engloba o carril, as travessas, os elementos de fixação e o balastro. Por fim esta dissertação apresenta um trabalho exaustivo na recolha e investigação das várias patologias associadas ao carril, as travessas, aos elementos de fixação e ao balastro, bem como o sistema de código, recomendações e correções associadas, fornecendo assim uma fácil interpretação do tipo de patologia e defeitos associados ao desenvolvimento desses fenómenos.

A presente dissertação tem como principal objetivo a avaliação do estado de conservação de uma ponte ferroviária metálica centenária para posteriormente se efetuar o reforço desta. O objeto de estudo foi a Ponte de Maçaínhas, uma ponte metálica treliçada que se situa na linha da Beira Baixa permitindo a ligação entre a Guarda e a Covilhã. Este trabalho envolveu um estudo profundo de vários conteúdos normativos relativos a ações em pontes ferroviárias e ações ambientais. Este estudo estende-se ainda ao campo das verificações regulamentares e critérios de segurança estrutural adequadas ao presente contexto. A operação de reforço começou numa rigorosa análise dos componentes estruturais da ponte, através do estudo de plantas e de um extenso registo fotográfico, para posteriormente se conceber um modelo numérico que traduzisse a situação real. Ao modelo concebido foram aplicadas as cargas regulamentares adequadas por forma a entender o comportamento que a ponte apresenta perante estas e se as suas secções transversais apresentam capacidade resistente suficiente. Caso estas não apresentem capacidade resistente suficiente teriam de ser intervencionadas. Concluído o processo de avaliação estrutural e de reforço, procedeu-se à verificação do comportamento da estrutura reforçada perante as ações de projeto. Com isto pretende-se avaliar se os esforços se distribuem da mesma maneira ou se a operação de reforço teve algum efeito na distribuição destes. Por último, para avaliar o comportamento da estrutura perante a passagem de tráfego real, realizaram-se análises dinâmicas que tiveram por base um grupo de veículos que habitualmente circulam na linha da Beira Baixa e um comboio de alta velocidade. Estas análises foram realizadas tanto para a situação pré reforço como pós reforço. Desta forma conseguiu-se fazer um paralelo entre ambas as condições e perceber se a operação de reforço foi bem-sucedida.

A presente tese procura estudar a história, evolução programática e iconografia do conjunto de programas decorativos azulejares encomendados a partir de 1905 para as estações de caminho de ferro portuguesas, num total de meia centena (correspondendo a cerca de quinhentos painéis) dispersa por quase todo o país, a maioria decorada até ao início da década de 1940. Transversal a regiões, encomendadores e cronologias, reproduziu-se massivamente um Portugal ruralizado, de paisagens bucólicas, monumentos de pedra e camponeses trabalhando nas terras ou apascentando rebanhos. Mais do que mera decoração, estes painéis procuravam captar a atenção de locais e forasteiros, numa mostra simultaneamente etnográfica e de promoção turística, concorrendo para a consolidação da figuração no azulejo da primeira metade do século XX. Pretendeu-se com este trabalho traçar, pela primeira vez, a história da azulejaria ferroviária portuguesa, procurando perceber quais as características destes programas e de que modo evoluiram e se encontram interligados entre si. Procedeu-se igualmente ao estudo iconográfico das mais representativas temáticas representadas, através de sua contextualização na arte portuguesa do período entre 1830 e 1940. Paralelamente foi feito um levantamento de todas as estações com decoração figurativa, que se concretizou na construção de fichas de inventário individuais, constantes do Volume II.

The phenomenon of communitas has been described as a moment 'in and out of time' in which a collective of individuals may be experienced by one as equal and individuated in an environment stripped of structural attributes (Turner, 1 969). In these moments, emotional bonds form and an experience of perceived 'oneness' and synergy may be described. As a result of the perceived value of these experiences, it has been suggested by Sharpe (2005) that more clearly understanding how this phenomenon may be purposefully facilitated would be beneficial for leisure service providers. Consequently, the purpose of this research endeavor was to examine the ways in which a particular leisure service provider systematically employs specific methods and sets specific parameters with the intention of guiding participants toward experiences associated with communitas or "shared spirit" as described by the organization. A qualitative case study taking a phenomenological approach was employed in order to capture the depth and complexity of both the phenomenon and the purposefiil negotiation of experiences in guiding participants toward this phenomenon. The means through which these experiences were intentionally facilitated was recreational music making in a group drumming context. As such, an organization which employs specific methods of rhythm circle facilitation as well as trains other facilitators all over the world was chosen purposely for their recognition as the most respectable and credible in this field. The specific facilitator was chosen based on high recommendation by the organization due to her level of experience and expertise. Two rhythm circles were held, and participants were chosen randomly by the facilitator. Data was collected through observation in the first circle and participant- observation in the second, as well as through focus groups with circle participants. Interviews with the facilitator were held both initially to gain broad understanding of concepts and phenomenon as well as after each circle to reflect on each circle specifically. Data was read repeatedly to drawn out patterns which emerged and were coded and organized accordingly. It was found that this specific process or system of implementation lead to experiences associated with communitas by participants. In order to more clearly understand this process and the ways in which experiences associated with communitas manifest as a result of deliberate facilitator actions, these objective facilitator actions were plotted along a continuum relating to subjective participant experiences. These findings were then linked to the literature with regards to specific characteristics of communitas. In so doing, the intentional manifestation of these experiences may be more clearly understood for ftiture facilitators in many contexts. Beyond this, findings summarized important considerations with regards to specific technical and communication competencies which were found to be essential to fostering these experiences for participants within each group. Findings surrounding the maintenance of a fluid negotiation of certain transition points within a group rhythm event overall were also highlighted, and this fluidity was found to be essential to the experience of absorption and engagement in the activity and experience. Emergent themes of structure, control, and consciousness have been presented as they manifested and were found to affect experiences within this study. Discussions surrounding the ethics and authenticity of these particular methods and their implementation has also been generated throughout. In conclusion, there was a breadth as well as depth of knowledge found in unpacking this complex process of guiding individuals toward experiences associated with communitas. The implications of these findings contribute in broadening the current theoretical as well as practical understanding as to how certain intentional parameters may be set and methods employed which may lead to experiences of communitas, and as well contribute a greater knowledge to conceptualizing the manifestation of these experiences when broken down.

The Buffalo and Brantford Railway Company was formed in 1850. The railway was renamed the Buffalo, Brantford & Goderich Railway in 1852 to reflect the plans to extend the line to Goderich. Financial problems led to a British group taking over the railway a few years later and the name was changed to the Buffalo & Lake Huron Railway. The Grand Trunk Railway initially ran from Montreal to Toronto, then with expansion of Canada operated to British Columbia, linking major cities together. In 1900, two way bill forms were completed; one for the Niagara Falls Wine Co. and the other for T.G. Bright & Co. Both companies were headquartered in Niagara Falls, Ont. The consignors were John Mayberry & Co. and John Eleareys?.

Lewis Tyrell married Jane Gains on August 31, 1849 in Culpeper Court House, Virginia. Jane Gains was a spinster. Lewis Tyrell died September 25, 1908 at his late residence, Vine St. and Welland Ave., St. Catharines, Ont. at the age of 81 years, 5 months. Jane Tyrell died March 1, 1886, age 64 years. Their son? William C. Tyrell died January 15, 1898, by accident in Albany, NY, age 33 years, 3 months. John William Taylor married Susan Jones were married in St. Catharines, Ont. on August 10, 1851 by William Wilkinson, a Baptist minister. On August 9, 1894 Charles Henry Bell (1871-1916), son of Stephen (1835?-1876) and Susan Bell, married Mary E. Tyrell (b. 1869?) daughter of Lewis and Alice Tyrell, in St. Catharines Ontario. By 1895 the Bell’s were living in Erie, Pennsylvania where children Delbert Otto (b. 1895) and Edna Beatrice (b. 1897) were born. By 1897 the family was back in St. Catharines where children Lewis Tyrell (b. 1899), Gertrude Cora (b. 1901), Bessie Jane (b. 1902), Charles Henry (b. 1906), Richard Nelson (b. 1911) and William Willoughby (b. 1912) were born. Charles Henry Bell operated a coal and ice business on Geneva Street. In the 1901 Census for St. Catharines, the Bell family includes the lodger Charles Henry Hall. Charles Henry Hall was born ca. 1824 in Maryland, he died in St. Catharines on November 11, 1916 at the age of 92. On October 24, 1889 Charles Hall married Susan Bell (1829-1898). The 1911 Census of Canada records Charles Henry Hall residing in the same household as Charles Henry and Mary Bell. The relationship to the householder is step-father. It is likely that after Stephen Bell’s death in 1876, his widow, Susan Bell married Hall. In 1939, Richard Nelson Bell, son of Charles Henry and Mary Tyrell Bell, married Iris Sloman. Iris (b. 22 May 1912 in Biddulph Township, Middlesex, Ontario) was the daughter of Albert (son of Joseph b. 1870 and Elizabeth Sloman, b. 1872) and Josie (Josephine Ellen) Butler Sloman of London, Ont. Josie (b. 1891) was the daughter of Everett Richard and Elizabeth McCarthy (or McCarty) Butler, of Lucan Village, Middlesex North. According to the 1911 Census of Canada, Albert, a Methodist, was a porter on the railroad. His wife, Josephine, was a Roman Catholic. Residing with Albert and Josie were Sanford and Sadie Butler and Sidney Sloman, likely siblings of Albert and Josephine. The Butler family is descended from Peter Butler, a former slave, who had settled in the Wilberforce Colony in the 1830s. Rick Bell b. 1949 in Niagara Falls, Ont. is the son of Richard Nelson Bell. In 1979, after working seven years as an orderly at the St. Catharines General Hospital while also attending night school at Niagara College, Rick Bell was hired by the Thorold Fire Dept. He became the first Black professional firefighter in Niagara. He is a founding member of the St. Catharines Junior Symphony; attended the Banff School of Fine Arts in 1966 and also performed with the Lincoln & Welland Regimental Band and several other popular local groups. Upon the discovery of this rich archive in his mothers’ attic he became passionate about sharing his Black ancestry and the contributions of fugitive slaves to the heritage Niagara with local school children. He currently resides in London, Ont.
