Black culture, white youth: la tradició cultural jamaicana al Regne Unit

Amb aquest projecte es pretén documentar tres dècades d'influència jamaicana en la cultura britànica, a partir de l’arribada del vaixell Empire Windrush al 1948, de la independència de Jamaica al 1962 i fins a finals dels anys setanta, coincidint amb l’arribada del rastafarisme. Es tracta de posar de manifest la contribució cultural i social dels jamaicans que, en gran part, ha ajudat al desenvolupament del Regne Unit.Els sound systems, els segells discogràfics i les seves subsidiàries, les gires i concerts d’artistes jamaicans... són una clara mostra de les aportacions de la comunitat jamaicana al país i que molts cops es posen de manifest amb celebracions tan populars com el famós Carnaval de Notting Hill. I és que la música i la cultura jamaicana és quelcom més del que molts es pensen, no només és Bob Marley i el consum de marihuana.

Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Validation of the Spinal Function Sort (SFS) for French- and German-Speaking Patients with Back Complaints

Aim: Functional subjective evaluation through questionnaire is fundamental, but not often realized in patients with back complaints, notably because of lack of validated tools, in accordance with recognized psychometric criteria. The Spinal Function Sort (SFS), developed according to actual standards, was only validated in English. The aim of this study is to translate, adapt and validate the French and German version of the SFS.Method and material: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation were performed following the methodology proposed by the American Association of Orthopedist Surgeon. A total of 344 patients, presenting varied back complaints (especially degenerative and traumatic), took part in this study in a tertiary French- (n=87; mean age 44y; 17 women) and German-speaking (n=257; mean age 41y; 53 women) center. Test-retest reliability was quantified using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and construct validity was assessed by estimating the Pearson's correlation with the SF-36 physical and mental scales, the Visual Analogue Scale for Pain Intensity (VAS), and subscales of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).Results: Respectively for the French and German version, ICC were 0.98 and 0.94. Correlations 0.63 and 0.67 with the SF-36 Physical Functioning subscale; 0.60 and 0.52 with the SF-36 Physical Summary Scale ; -0.33 and -0.51 with the VAS ; -0.08 and 0.25 with the SF-36 Mental Health scale; 0.01 and 0.28 with the SF-36 Mental Summary Scale; -0.26 and -0.42 with the HADS depression; -0.17 and -0.45 with the HADS anxiety.Discussion: For both the French and German version of the SFS, the reliability was excellent. Convergent construct validity with SF-36 physical scales is good, moderated with the VAS. We find out a low correlation with SF-36 mental scales (divergent construct validity). We find out a low correlation with HADS subscales in the French version, and a moderate one in the German version. Selection bias, chronicity of the complaints, as well as cultural differences could explain these results. In conclusion, both the French and German version of the SFS are valid and reliable for evaluation of perceived functional capacity for patients with back complaints.

This paper presents some findings of the fieldwork of my doctoral thesis “Human Rights Educationas a Tool for Social Cohesion” of the Doctoral Program “Education and Society”The main research question that arises is: Can Human Rights Education be the departurepoint to work from, with and for the cultural diversity that characterizes our societies?Human Rights Education has been introduced in our social politics and among them ineducational policies which have a relevant role on the consecution of a cohesive society. Education,as a social right that has to be guarantee, facilitates the social change and the promotionof values and attitudes that favor cohesion.The work of several organizations like United Nations, The Council of Europe or Amnestyinternational have develop a wide variety of materials regarding human rights education atschools, guides and manuals for teachers, courses, development of competences and compendiumof activities.

Experiència artistica i producció cultural, àmbits per a la intervenció socioeducativa

La intervenció socioeducativa troba en les activitats artístiques interessants possibilitats per a treballar amb una gran varietat de col·lectius socials. La col·laboració interdisciplinaria entre diferents arees i entre diferents professionals, educadors, treballadors socials, art-terapeutes, pedagogs i artistes dóna lloc a tot el món línies d'investigació i de projectes d'intervenció socioeducativa amb l'art i altres produccions culturals com a protagonistes. Els professionals de la intervenció socioeducativa tenen eines valuoses per al seu treball.

The Cultural Leadership Partners Program of the Iowa Arts Council and Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs (IAC/DCA) engages leaders in Iowa’s arts and cultural community that have demonstrated an exemplary record of programming and managerial excellence, as well as exceptional community service to the citizens of Iowa on a year-round basis. After a rigorous application process, organizations selected to become Cultural Leadership Partners (CLPs) receive annual operating support from IAC/DCA. This document will not only serve to communicate to CLPs what the IAC/DCA has learned from these conversations, but that it will act as a catalyst for further development of the program and inform how IAC/DCA can support, challenge, connect, and partner with Iowa’s leading arts and cultural institutions.

Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs’ FY13-FY15 Annual Report. Preservação de sêmen refrigerado de cioba com diluentes e atmosfera modificada

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes diluentes, em atmosfera normal e modificada, na preservação de sêmen refrigerado da cioba - Lutjanus analis. Amostras de sêmen de 30 peixes foram avaliadas quanto à taxa de motilidade, duração da motilidade, concentração espermática e espermatócrito. Para a refrigeração a 4ºC, três diferentes diluentes, com distintas composições iônicas e valores de pH distintos, foram testados em atmosfera normal e atmosfera modificada (100% oxigênio). Posteriormente, um teste de fertilização foi realizado para avaliar a viabilidade do sêmen refrigerado. No experimento de refrigeração, a taxa de motilidade e a duração da motilidade foram adequadas, durante 72 horas, para os diluentes A (48±7%; 190±26 s) e B (41±4%; 160±22 s) em atmosfera normal. Na atmosfera modificada, a qualidade do sêmen caiu drasticamente durante as primeiras 24 horas, independentemente do diluente utilizado, e não houve vantagem em sua utilização. A taxa de fertilização com sêmen refrigerado por 24 horas, tratado com diluente A, não diferiu daquela com sêmen fresco, e ambas foram superiores à obtida com sêmen refrigerado por 48 horas.
