The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of Ca: available P (P-a) ratio in the diets on performance and bone mineral depositions of juvenile Nile tilapia (2.5 +/- 0.5g). Seven isoproteic and isoenergetic diets (28% CP and 3100 Kcal of DE/Kg of diet), with similar crude fiber and sulfur aminoacids content, were used. The diets had 0.50 and 0.25; 0.50 and 0.50; 0.50 and 0.75; 0.80 and 0.40; 0.80 and 0.80; and 0.80 and 1.20% of Ca and P-a which corresponded to Ca/P-a ratios of 2:1;1:1 and 1:1.5, respectively. An additional control diet, with low levels of Ca and Pa (0.02 and 0.12%, respectively) was used. A completely randomized design with a 2'3 factorial arrangement (Ca level and Ca:P-a ratio) on treatments, plus the additional control diet and three replications was used. Five fishes per aquaria were randomly allotted to 21 fiberglass aquaria (80L). The temperature of the water was maintained close to 26degreesC, and the oxygen, pH and ammonia levels of the water were monitored. The results showed that it was necessary a minimum dietary level of 0.25% of P-a for a satisfactory bone mineral depositions, and that the best performance results were achieved using diets with Ca: P-a ratios between 1:1 and 1:1.5.

Blood constituents of Nelore, Hosltein and buffalo cows were determined during pregnancy, at the time of calving and at post-partum. It was verified that. 1. The pregnancy and post-partum periods had no influence in the erythrocyte values, but at calving the red blood cell counts and hemoglobin levels of Holstein and buffalo cows were lower than for Nelore cattle; 2. leukocyte counts were similar among groups; 3. total protein levels of Nelore cows were lower than Holstein and buffalo. The albumin levels were rite lowest at rite time of calving compared to late pregnancy; 4. glicose levels were lower ill buffalo cows during pregnancy as compared with Holstein cows. The glicemia of Nelore cows was lower as compared to Holstein cow's irt late pregnancy; 5. urea and creatinine levels were higher in buffalo cows than cattle. The urea and creatinine levels were greater in buffalo cows with maximum values at the post-partum and at the parturition, respectively; 6. bilirrubin levels were higher in bovine than buffalo cows; 7. aspartate aminotransferase activity was greater in buffalo cows and increased at the time of calving; 8. alkaline phosphatase activity was increased during pregnancy and decreased after the time of calving; 9. gammnglutamyltransferase activity, vas the highest for buffalo cows after calving; IO. calcium levels were the highest for Holstein cows at the post-partum and the phosphorus levels were higher in buffalo cows, which had the highest magnesium levels at the parturation.

The objective of the present study was to determine the possibility of using stayability (STAY) of dams as a selection criterion for fertility in the Nelore breed. STAY was defined as whether or not a cow calved in a herd at a specific age or after this age given that she had calved at an earlier age. The specific ages studied were 5 (STAY5), 6 (STAY6) and 7 (STAY7) years. Data on 53 271, 46 011 and 41517 animals were analyzed for the respective ages. The Method 91 was used to estimate the variance components and a maximum threshold a posteriori model was used to predict the genetic values. The analyses provided h(2) estimates of 0.117+/-0.003, 0.122+/-0.004 and 0.171+/-0.005 for STAY5, STAY6 and STAY7, respectively. The ease with which the trait can be recorded and the h 2 estimates indicate that the use of this trait as a selection criterion can contribute to increased dam fertility. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Blood samples from lactating, weaned and adult Holstein-Fresiean and Nelore cattle and Murrah buffaloes were tested through the study of hemogram and serum constituents. Red cell and leukocyte counts, and blood pH, fibrinogen, glucose, calcium, and phosphorus levels were similar in cattle and buffalo. Total protein, urea, creatinine, hemoglobin, magnesium, iron and aspartato aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase activities were higher in buffalo than cattle. Leukocyte counts were higher for weaned Holstein cattle than for Nelore cattle but similar to buffalo and Nelore cattle had the lowest neutrophil counts. Bilirrubin levels were lower for buffalo than for cattle. Phosphatase alkalyne activities were lower for weaned buffalo than for other animals. Gammaglutamyltransferase activities were the highest for lactating and weaned buffalo.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the protein composition of the sperm membranes (SM) of Nelore bulls, assessing protein markers associated with bull fertility, and whether these markers can be used for predicting bull fertility. Samples were obtained of 20 Nelore bulls, with fertility ranked and divided into three groups (greater, normal and least). To rank the bull's fertility weighted classification was used (according to the number of pregnant cows, number of AI cows and number of herds, considering three different breeding seasons), using the PROC GENMOD as a statistical model, with 99% significance. A total of 7897 Nelore cows, randomly distributed among 28 different farms, were considered in the statistical analyses. The bulls were divided into three fertility groups (pregnancy rates): greater (%F > 80), normal (79 <%F > 71) and least (< 68%F) with 3, 13 and 4 bulls, respectively. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) of sperm membranes indicated in 27 spots (SM40, SM53, SM69, SM93, SM102, SM111, SM137, SM138, SM189, SM196, SM201, SM202, SM204, SM225, SM236, SM237, SM239, SM241, SM246, SM247, SM275, SM283, SM342, SM346, SM355, SM372, SM391) was prevalent in the higher fertility group, and just one spot (SM244) was prevalent in the lower fertility group. Spots SM244 and SM239 had their identification defined by PMF/MALDI-MS, as BSP-A3 and aSFP, respectively. Both these proteins showed a great potential for predicting bull's fertility. The amount of aSFP was 8.5 times greater in the sperm membrane protein profile of the higher fertility groups of Nelore bulls. Besides that, the BSP-A3 was 2.5 times greater in the lower fertility group. For the other spots potentially associated with fertility not yet identified, additional tests will be necessary, but it is clear that the 2D electrophoresis of the sperm membrane can be used for a new approach to predict Nelore bull fertility. In this experiment, 96 piglets (Large White x Landrace) were fed simple (SD) or semi-complex (SCD) diets during the initial phase (SP), using a controlled (C) or ad libitum (AL) schedules during the first 14 days of the SP and ad libitum for the rest of SP. By the end of SP one male and one female from each pen were transferred to growing finishing pens where they were fed ad libitum diets specific to each phase. The experimental design consisted of randomized complete blocks with six replicates by treatment. Higher average daily feed intakes (ADFI) were observed during the first 14 days of the SP by pigs fed SCD. Pigs fed AL showed higher ADFI and average daily gains (ADG). No treatment differences were observed between the treatments in feed conversion (FC) or in incidence and severity of diarrhea. Considering SP as a whole, there was no effect of treatments on the variables studied. Treatments used in SF did not affect ADFI and ADG during the growing-finishing phases (GFP), although pigs fed SD showed better FC. The ADG was nor affected by treatments when the total period (SP+GFP) was considered. It can be concluded that a similar performance was obtained when SD or SCD were feci during the initial phase. independently of the feeding system.

Puberty in Zebu heifers follows a pattern characterized by a decrease in the steroid feedback mechanism and an increase in LH concentration, which result in the first ovulation followed by a short estrous cycle and the onset of normal cycles thereafter. These events are similar to those observed in Bos taurus cattle but occur at a later age. The late onset of puberty is both genetic and environmental in origin and is reflected by the age at first calving that can be at 40 months of age or older in these animals. Age at puberty in Zebu heifers has been shown to have a high heritability. Consequently, selecting precocious heifers may be an effective means of reducing age at puberty in these animals and this approach is being adopted in commercial practice. Genetic selection is not the sole solution to the problem because environmental improvements are necessary, particularly in terms of improved nutrition. South American Zebu cattle are usually subject to sub-optimum nutritional and management conditions and, hence, exhibit late onset of puberty. Hybrids of Zebu and Bos taurus cattle exhibit heterosis in respect of the age of puberty with earlier onset than expected in crossbred animals. Recently, purebred South American Zebu cattle have been shown to have Bos taurus genes, indicating that there have been previous attempts to improve their productivity using this approach. It was concluded that the age at first calving in South American Zebu cattle can be reduced by exposing well-fed, yearling heifers to bulls and selecting, over several generations, those animals that become pregnant at an early age. A trial was carried out using 1,000 day-old chicks to evaluate levels of NaCl (0.30, 0.45, 0.60, 0.75 and 0.90%) in diets. Water and feeding with 20.1 and 18.2% CP, 2, 900 and 2,950 kcal/kg ME respectively for initial and finishing phases were offered ad libitum. High levels of NaCl (0.60, 0.75 and 0.90%) increased the water intake and water:feed ratio during the first 21 days (P<0.05). Whitin the period of 21-42 days only water intake increased (P<0.05). Body weight, feed and water intake, mortality were higher (P<0.05)for males. High levels of NaCl (0.60, 0.75 and 0.90%) increased (P<0.05) body weight, water intake, water:feed ratio and moist litter during the trial. The supplementation of high levels of NaCl increased performance, bur implied in higher litter moisture.

Follicle ablation has been recognized as an efficient method of follicular wave synchronization. Treatment with recombinant bovine somatotropin (BST) has been shown to enhance follicular development in <(Bos taurus)under bar>. This experiment assessed the effects of these treatments in Nelore (<(B. indicus)under bar>) heifers. Eight cycling Nelore heifers were randomly assigned to 3 different treatments. on Day 2 of a synchronized cycle (Day 0 = day of ovulation), heifers assigned to Treatments 1 and 2 received 2 mL of saline, whereas heifers assigned to Treatment 3 received 320 mg of BST. on Day 5, the first-wave dominant follicle was ablated by ultrasoundguided transvaginal aspiration in heifers in Treatments 2 and 3, and all heifers received an injection of prostaglandin on Day 11. Aspiration of the dominant follicle advanced and synchronized (P < 0.05) the day of second-wave emergence (6.9 +/- 0.1 vs. 8.4 +/- 0.4) and the day of the pre-wave FSH peak (6.0 +/- 0.0 vs. 6.9 +/- 0.4), and increased FSH peak concentrations (381 +/- 21 vs. 292 +/- 30; pg/mL; P < 0.01). Recombinant bovine somatotropin treatment caused a two-fold increase in plasma insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) concentrations (P < 0.001) and resulted in a 36% increase in the number of small follicles (<5 mm; P < 0.001) compared with saline-treated heifers. In summary, in agreement with previous reports on <(B. taurus)under bar>, dominant follicle aspiration synchronized ovarian follicular development, and BST treatment increased peripheral concentrations of IGF-I in Nelore heifers. Recombinant bovine somatotropin also increased the number of small follicles, but this response appeared to be inferior to that reported for <(B. taurus)under bar>. (C) 2000 by Elsevier B.V.
