New data on elemental composition of particulate matter from the North Dvina River are presented. In May (period of snowmelt flood) it is similar to the upper layer of the continental crust due to active erosion of crust material in the catchment area. In August (summer low water period) impact of biogenic components increases and elevated concentrations of Cd, Sb, Mn, Zn, Pb, and Cu are observed. At other seasons no significant increase in heavy and rare earth element concentrations is observed.

The vault of the sacristy of the Cathedral of Saint-Jean Baptiste in Perpignan (France), constructed by the Majorcan architect Guillem Sagrera between 1433 and 1447, is an outstanding, yet strikingly unknown, example of rib vaulting. This paper analyzes the overall construction of the form of the vault, characterized by its highly irregular perimeter, with particular attention to an isolated decorated corbel which solves the problem of the wall support of a group of six ribs and is in stark contrast with the rest of the supports, which are completely unadorned. Given the extreme rigour of Sagrera in all his works (and this one in particular), this apparent “capriccio” must be justified not only by decorative or formal requirements, but also by the constructive logic of Gothic vaulting system

Ternary molybdates and tungstates ABO4 (A=Ca, Pb and B= Mo, W) are a group of materials that could be used for a variety of optoelectronic applications. We present a study of the optoelectronic properties based on first-principles using several orbitaldependent one-electron potentials applied to several orbital subspaces. The optical properties are split into chemical-species contributions in order to quantify the microscopic contributions. Furthermore, the effect of using several one-electron potentials and orbital subspaces is analyzed. From the results, the larger contribution to the optical absorption comes from the B-O transitions. The possible use as multi-gap solar cell absorbents is analyzed.

In neurons, depolarization induces Ca2+ influx leading to fusion of synaptic vesicles docked at the active zone for neurotransmitter release. While a number of proteins have now been identified and postulated to participate in the assembly and subsequent disengagement of a vesicle docking complex for fusion, the mechanism that ultimately triggers neuroexocytosis remains elusive. Using a cell-free, lysed synaptosomal membrane preparation, we show that Ca2+ alone is sufficient to trigger secretion of glutamate and furthermore that Ca(2+)-signaled exocytosis is effectively blocked by antibodies and peptides to SNAP-25, a key constituent of the vesicle docking complex. In addition, Ca2+ inhibits the ability of synaptotagmin, a synaptic vesicle protein proposed as a calcium sensor and triggering device, to associate with this docking complex. These results support a model in which Ca(2+)-dependent triggering of neurotransmission at central synapses acts after ATP-dependent potentiation of the docking-fusion complex for membrane fusion.
