A new solvent, dimethylformamide (DMF), and the traditional solvent, 1,4-butanediol, were used to prepare single crystals of nylon-10,10 from a dilute solution. The lamellae grown from DMF inhabited a more perfect structure and regular shape than those crystals crystallized from traditional solvents such as 1,4-butanediol and glycerin. These thin and perfect lamellar crystals demonstrated patterns of variation in spacing different from those of melt-crystallized spherulites on heating. Specifically, the two main spacings slightly separated rather than continuously approaching each other when the temperature was greater than 180 degreesC. This is a novel phenomenon observed in nylons. Nevertheless, the usual pattern of change in spacing was observed during the cooling process. These lamellar crystals showed more compact spacing of the (002) and (010/100) planes than spherulites at room temperature. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The nanoscale and microscale fibrillar crystals of nylon 10 10 were obtained by atomizing the very dilute formic acid solution. The length-diameter ratio of these fibrillar crystals increases as the concentration of the atomizing solution increases. Electron diffraction (ED) analysis showed that the hydrogen-bonded sheet in these solution-grown fibrillar crystals was imperfect and had a lower order. Both electron diffraction and characteristic morphology show that melt-crystallized fibrillar crystals always possess perfect packing order and stable structure. A rather perfect ED pattern of the triclinic form of nylon 10 10 along the [001] zone was obtained by tilting the specimen 41 degrees along the elongated direction of the crystal. Fibrillar crystals from bulk have a great tendency to aggregate with parallel packing to form crystal clusters, which look like shish kebabs in morphology. A liquid crystalline (LC) copolyether has been synthesized from 1-(4-hydroxy-4'-biphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane with 1,7-dibromoheptane and 1,11-dibromoundecane with a 50/50 (both in %) equal composition of the 7- and 11-methylene monomers [coTPP-7/11(5/5)]. A mono-domain with a homeotropic alignment can be induced by a thin film surface in the LC phase. When an electrostatic field is applied to the surface-induced mono-domains parallel to the thin film surface normal, the molecular alignment undergoes a change from the homeotropic to uniaxial homogeneous arrangement. However, when the field is applied to a direction perpendicular to the thin film surface normal. the molecular alignment is about 10 degrees -tilt with respect to the homeotropic alignment toward the a*-axis. This is because the permanent dipole moment of the copolyether is not right vertical to the molecular direction. The calculation of molecular dipoles indicates that the permanent dipole moment of this copolyether is about 70 degrees away from the molecular axis, which leads to a negative dielectric anisotropy. It is speculated that the 10 degrees- rather than 20 degrees -tilt is due to a balance between the alignment induced by the electrostatic field and the surface. In the electrostatic field, molecules are subjected to a torque tau, which is determined by the permanent dipole moment P and the electrostatic field E: tau = P x E. The molecular realignment in both parallel and perpendicular directions to the thin film surface normal is determined by satisfying the condition of tau = P x E = 0. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Three new asymmetrical ruthenium (II) complexes: [Ru(phen)(2){phen-NHCO(CH2)(4)Br}](PF6)(2), [Ru(phen)(2){phen-NHCO(CH2)(5)Br}](PF6)(2) and [Ru(phen)(2){phen-NHCO(CH2)(10)Br}](PF6)(2) were synthesized, which were confirmed by the technique of FT-IR, H-1 NMR and ESI-MS. The electrochemical and fluorescent properties of three Ru (II) complexes were investigated with cyclic voltammetry and fluorometry.

A manganese molybdenum phosphate, (NH3CH2CH2NH3)(10)(H3O)(3)(H5O)Na-2[MnMo12O24(OH)(6) (PO4)(4)(PO3OH)(4)][MnMo12O24 (OH)(6)(PO4)(6)(PO3OH)(2)]. 9H(2)O, has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of this compound may be considered to be two [Mo6O12(OH)(3)(PO4)(2)(HPO4)(2)](7-) units bonded together by a manganese atom, although several P-O groups are not protonated on account of coordination to a Na+ cation. One-dimensional tunnels were formed in the solid. A probe reaction of the oxidation of acetaldehyde with H2O2 using this compound as catalyst was carried out in a liquid-solid system, showing that the manganese molybdenum phosphate has high catalytic activity in the reaction.

Novel macrocyclic aryl thioether ester oligomers have been synthesized in high yield from phthaloyl dichloride and 4,4'-thiodiphenol under pseudo high dilution conditions. The cyclic nature was unambiguously confirmed by a combination of MALDI-TOF MS, gel permeation chromatography and NMR analyses. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction of cyclic ester dimer reveals no severe strain on the cyclic structure. The free-radical ring opening polymerization (ROP) of the macrocyclic oligomers was achieved to give high molecular weight polymers via a transthioetherification reaction. The molecular weight of the polymer resulting from ROP decreases as the conversion of cyclic oligomers increases after a polymerization period of 30 min.

Four novel screw-like Ru(II) complexes, tris(5-lauramide-1,10-phenanthroline)Ru(II) bishexafluorophosphate, tris(5-myristamide-1,10-phenanthroline)Ru(II) bishexafluorophosphate, tris(5-palmitamide-1,10-phenanthroline)Ru(II) bishexafluorophosphate and tris (5-stearamide-1,10-phenanthroline)Ru(II) bishexafluorophosphate have been efficiently synthesized. They are confirmed by the techniques of IR, H-1 NMR, H-1-H-1 COSY and ES-MS. Also, their electrochemistry, fluorescence and electrochemiluminescence are reported.

Polyimides were prepared from diamines: 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamine (3MPDA) and 2,3,4,5-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (4MPDA). 1,4-Bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA), 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 3,3'-4,4'-diphenylsulphone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SO(2)PDA), 3,3',4,4'-diphenylsulphide tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SPDA), pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), and 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexa-fluoroisopropane dianhydride (6FDA) were used as dianhydride. The gas permeabilities of H-2, O-2 and N-2 through the polyimides were measured at temperatures from 30 degrees C to 90 degrees C. The results show that as methyl and trifluoromethyl substitution groups densities increase from 7.73 x 10(-3) molcm(-3) to 13.50 x 10(-3)molcm(-3), the peameability of H-2 increases 10-fold at 60% loss of permselectivity of H-2/N-2 however, the permeability of O-2 increases 20-fold at 20% loss of permselectivity of O-2/N-2. For O-2/N-2 separation, PMDA-3MPDA has similar performance to 6FDA-3MPDA and 6FDA-4MPDA; all have higher permeabilities for O-2 than normal polyimides, and the P(O-2)/alpha(O-2/N-2) trade-off relationships lie on the upper bound line for polymers. Synthesis, IR spectra, UV-vis spectra and photophysical properties of Gd3+, Eu3+, Tb3+ complexes with 3,4-furandicarboxylic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline are reported. Intramolecular energy transfer process for these complexes is discussed in detail. It is found that the intramolecular energy transfer efficiency depends on the relative positions between the resonance energy levels of the central rare earth ions and the lowest triplet state energies of ligands.

In-situ synthesis of europium and terbium complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) in silica matrix by a two-step sol-gel process has been proposed. The formation of europium and terbium complexes with phen in sol-gel derived silica gel were confirmed by the luminescence excitation spectra. The silica gels that contain in-situ synthesized europium and terbium complex exhibit the characteristic emission bands of the rare earth ions. Furthermore. the rare earth ions present longer fluorescence lifetimes than the comparable pure complex powder and the complexes dissolved in ethanol solutions. The luminescence properties of the silica gels codoped with europium (or terbium) and phen were also investigated with respect to the gels doped with europium (or terbium). 本文提出表面扩散法的思想并应用于稀土三基色发光材料中蓝色组份BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+的制备.结果表明,同直接高温因相法制得的荧光体相比,利用表面扩散法制备的蓝色荧光体BuMgAl10O17:Eu2+,在相同的发光亮度条件下,激活剂Eu2+的浓度可以大为降低,从而为降低这类材料的成本提出了依据和可能.

Molecule dynamics simulation was used on HPT(2,3,6,7,10,11-hexa-n-pentyloxytriphenylene), which is a discotic Liquid crystal. From analyzing the energy and displacement varying with the temperature, the phase transition temperature of PM6MPP can be predicted. The deviations of T-g, T-m and T-i due to the MD time scale are small enough that it should be possibly used to predict the material properties especially when more powerful computers are available.

Experimental electron diffraction patterns and high resolution images were used to determine the space group and unit cell dimensions of 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakispentyloxytriphenylene. Subsequently the molecular conformation was calculated by energy minimized package in Cerius2. Using this method, we got the HPT crystal structure: space group: P6/mmm; lattice type: hexogonal; the lattice parameters are a = b = 20.3 angstrom, c = 3.52 angstrom, = = 90 degrees, = 120 degrees. The core of HPT is not perpendicular to the column. The angle between a axis and HPT core plane is 9 degrees which cannot be seen in b-c projection. The simulated ED patterns and HREM images are good agreement with the experimental ED patterns and HREM images.

Ternary complexes of europium and terbium with paraaminobenzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline (Eu(p-ABA)(3). phen . 2H(2)O and Tb(p-ABA)(3). phen . 2H(2)O, where p-HABA = paraaminobenzoic acid and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were introduced into a silica matrix by sol-gel method. The luminescence behavior of the complexes in silica gels was studied in comparison with the. corresponding solid-state complexes by means of emission, excitation spectra, and Lifetimes. Within the range of effective dopant concentrations, the luminescence intensities of rare-earth complexes in silica gel increase with the increasing of their dopant concentration. The lifetimes of rare-earth ions (Eu3+ and-Tb3+) in silica gel doped with europium and terbium complexes become longer than those in pure complexes. Very small amounts of rare-earth complexes doped in silica gel matrix can exhibit excellent luminescence properties, (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.

A series of binary and ternary rare earth (Gd, Eu, Tb) complexes with aromatic acids and 1,10-phenanthroline have been synthesized. The lowest triplet state energies of ligands have been obtained by measuring the phosphorescence spectra of binary gadolinium complexes. By comparing the phosphorescence spectra of binary complexes with those of ternary ones, it is found that there exists another intramolecular energy transfer process from the aromatic acids to 1,10-phenanthroline besides the intramolecular energy transfer process between the aromatic acids and the central rare earth ions. The intramolecular energy transfer efficiencies have been calculated by determining phosphorescence lifetimes of binary and ternary gadolinium complexes. The luminescence properties of corresponding europium and terbium complexes are in agreement with the prediction based on energy transfer mechanism. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
