An extensive study of the one-dimensional two-segment Frenkel-Kontorova FK model reveals a transition from the counterintuitive existence to the ordinary nonexistence of a negative-differential-thermal-resistance NDTR regime, when the system size or the intersegment coupling constant increases to a critical value. A “phase” diagram which depicts the relevant conditions for the exhibition of NDTR was obtained. In the existence of a NDTR regime, the link at the segment interface is weak and therefore the corresponding exhibition of NDTR can be explained in terms of effective phonon-band shifts. In the case where such a regime does not exist, the theory of phonon-band mismatch is not applicable due to sufficiently strong coupling between the FK segments. The findings suggest that the behavior of a thermal transistor will depend critically on the properties of the interface and the system size.

The structures, properties and electron transfer reactivity of the ClO/ClO+ coupling system are studied in this paper at ab initio (HF and MP2) levels and the density functional theory (DFT: B3LYP, B3P86, B3PW91) levels employing 6311 + G(3df) basis set and on the basis of the golden-rule of the time-dependent perturbation theory. Investigations indicate that the results got from the B3LYP method employing 6-311 + G(3df) basis set is in excellent agreement with the experiment. The activation energies, the stabilization energies and the electronic coupling matrix elements have also been calculated by using the B3LYP/6-311 + G(3df) method, and then the electron transfer rates are determined at this level. The electronic coupling matrix element of EC.6 is very small, only 0.03 kcal/mol, while that of EC.7 is the biggest, being 12.41 kcal/mol, the corresponding electron transfer rate is also the fastest among these seven encounter complexes. The averaged electron transfer rate is about 1.672 X 10(11) M-1 s(-1). It is indicated that the structures optimized by B3LYP method are more reliable than the results got from the other four methods. It also testified that the electronic coupling matrix element is the vital factor that significantly affects the electron transfer rate. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The structures, properties and electron transfer reactivity of the ClO/ClO- coupling system are studied in this paper at ab initio (UHF and UMP2) levels and the Density Functional Theory (DFT: UB3LYP, UB3P86, UB3PW91) levels employing 6311 + G(3df) basis set and on the basis of the Golden-rule of the time-dependent perturbation theory. Investigations indicate that the results obtained using the UB3LYP method employing 6-311 + G(3df) basis set is in excellent agreement with the experiment. For this coupling system, six stable coupling modes have been found which correspond to six different encounter complexes and denote six different electron transfer mechanism: four O-O directly linked structures (one collinear: D-h, one anti-parallel: C-s, two twist: C-2) and two Cl-O linked structures (cis- and anti- C-s structures). The activation energies, the stabilization energies and the electronic coupling matrix elements have also been calculated for the electron transfer reactions via these six different mechanism at the UB3LYP/6-311 + G(3df) level, and then the electron transfer rates are determined at the same level. The most favorable coupling mode to the electron transfer is the anti-parallel mechanism. The averaged electron transfer rate is about 5.58 X 10(11) M-1 s(-1). It is also implied that the B3LYP method can give more reasonable results for the electron transfer reactivity of this system. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The theoretical model of collisional quantum interference (CQI) in intramolecular rotational energy transfer is described in an atom-diatom system, based on the first Born approximation of time-dependent perturbation theory and considering a long-range interaction potential. The relation between differential and integral interference angles is obtained. For the CO A(1)Pi (v = 0)/e(3)Sigma (-)(v = 1)-He collision system, the calculated integral interference angles are consistent with the experimental values. The physical significance of interference angle and the essential factors it depends on as well as the influence of the short-range interaction on CQI are discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. We investigated the electronic structure of the d-electron heavy-fermion system CaCu3Ru4O12 by use of the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. Our results indicate that the compound is a paramagnetic metal, in agreement with the experimental observation. The conductivity of the compound is governed by two main factors. One is the Ru-O dp pi coupling around the Fermi energy level, which makes Ru-O-Ru networks conductive. The other is the hybridization between the itinerant Ru 4d electrons and the localized Cu 3d (dz(2) and part of dx(2)-y(2) and dxy) electrons through O 2p orbitals in the energy region from -2.0 to -1.0 eV. The Ru-O-Cu interaction makes the localized Cu electrons start to be itinerant through the coupling with Ru 4d electrons. This results in Ru-O-Cu networks being conductive. Therefore, in the title compound, both Ru-O-Ru and Ru-O-Cu networks contribute to the conducting behavior.

Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, electron affinities, ionization potentials, and dissociation energies of the title molecules in neutral, positively, and negatively charged ions were studied by use of density functional methods B3LYP, BLYP, BHLYP, BPW91, and B3PW91. The calculated results are compared with experiments and previous theoretical studies. It was found that the calculated properties are highly dependent on the functionals employed, in particular for the dissociation energy and vibrational frequency. For neutral species, pure density functional methods BLYP and BPW91 have relatively good performance in reproducing the experimental bond distance and vibrational frequency. For cations, hybrid exchange functional methods B3LYP and B3PW91 are good in predicting the dissociation energy. For both neutral and charged species, BHLYP tends to give smaller dissociation energy.

The cyclization of neoprene was achieved with the aid of a cationic catalyst system based on diethylaluminum chloride (Et2AlCl) and an organic chloride, allyl chloride (CH2=CHCH2Cl) or benzyl chloride (C6H5CH2Cl). The main parameters of the cyclization process were investigated. Elastomers with low intrinsic viscosity, ready solubility and some gelling were obtained. Xylene was a good solvent for the cyclization process, which took place in a very short time (less than or equal to5 min). The products were characterized with IR, H-1-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, and gel permeation chromatography. The polycyclic structure was determined. The degree of cyctization and the incorporated solvent content were estimated with a H-1-NMR method.

poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and silica (SiO2) organic-inorganic hybrid materials have been synthesized by sol-gel approach and the crystalline behavior of PCL in the silica networks has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The degree of PCL crystallinity in the PCL/SiO2 hybrid networks reduces with the increase of SiO2 content. PCL is in an amorphous state when the concentration of PCL is lower than 40wt% in the hybrid materials. The melting points of PCL in the networks are lower than that of pure PCL,but they almost have a same value. WAXD results show that when the PCL weight percentage is higher than 40wt% in the hybrid samples, part of PCL can crysatllize and the PCL crystallites are almost in a same size. That means the crystalline movement of PCL molecular chains is strictly confined by the porous gel. The crystalline PCL in the hybrid samples is relatively free from the composition of the materials, because the crystallization temperature and melting point of PCL of the samples are almost equal, and the crystalline PCL of different samples has the same crystalline structure and the same crystallite sizes L-110 and L-200, that means the crystalline part of PCL in the hybrid samples is unperturbed and the porous silica gel gives enough space for PCL to crystallize into the same crystalline structure and the same size crystallites.

Morphological studies of a series of propylene/ethylene sequential polymers have been carried out by permanganic etching and transmission electron microscopy, as an aid to characterization, in conjunction with differential scanning calorimetry. The materials were synthesized using a titanium-based catalyst, with propylene and either ethylene or ethylene/propylene mixture introduced successively, with the aim of examining whether a proportion of block copolymer is obtained. These materials show a complicated phase structure which does not simply reflect polymerization time but varies greatly, especially in regard to the order of introduction of the monomers, and their morphology differs in a number of ways from that of typical commercial materials. Comparison of the materials, as synthesized and after extraction with heptane, suggests that there is a certain amount of material which can compatibilize polypropylene- and ethylene-rich phases, but it was not possible to decide whether it does in fact have block structure.

Heart disease is one of the main factor causing death in the developed countries. Over several decades, variety of electronic and computer technology have been developed to assist clinical practices for cardiac performance monitoring and heart disease diagnosis. Among these methods, Ballistocardiography (BCG) has an interesting feature that no electrodes are needed to be attached to the body during the measurement. Thus, it is provides a potential application to asses the patients heart condition in the home. In this paper, a comparison is made for two neural networks based BCG signal classification models. One system uses a principal component analysis (PCA) method, and the other a discrete wavelet transform, to reduce the input dimensionality. It is indicated that the combined wavelet transform and neural network has a more reliable performance than the combined PCA and neural network system. Moreover, the wavelet transform requires no prior knowledge of the statistical distribution of data samples and the computation complexity and training time are reduced.

How the visual system extracts shape information from a single grey-level image can be approached by examining how the information about shape is contained in the image. This technical report considers the characteristic equations derived by Horn as a dynamical system. Certain image critical points generate dynamical system critical points. The stable and unstable manifolds of these critical points correspond to convex and concave solution surfaces, giving more general existence and uniqueness results. A new kind of highly parallel, robust shape from shading algorithm is suggested on neighborhoods of these critical points. The information at bounding contours in the image is also analyzed.
