A robust exponential function based controller is designed to synchronize effectively a given class of Chua's chaotic systems. The stability of the drive-response systems framework is proved through the Lyapunov stability theory. This work comprises a study upon the quantization and the renormalizability of the generalized electrodynamics of spinless charged particles (mesons), namely, the generalized scalar electrodynamics (GSQED4). The theory is quantized in the covariant framework of the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky method. Thereafter, the complete Green's functions are obtained through functional methods and a proper discussion on the theory's renormalizability is also given. Next, we present the computation and further discussion on the radiative correction at α order; and, as it turns out, an unexpected mP-dependent divergence on the mesonic sector of the theory is found. Furthermore, in order to show the effectiveness of the renormalization procedure on the present theory, we also give a diagrammatic discussion on the photon self-energy at α2 order, where we observe contributions from the meson self-energy function. Afterwards, we present the expressions of the counterterms and effective coupling of the theory, obtaining from the latter an energy range where the theory is defined by m2≤k2

Artificial Neural Networks are widely used in various applications in engineering, as such solutions of nonlinear problems. The implementation of this technique in reconfigurable devices is a great challenge to researchers by several factors, such as floating point precision, nonlinear activation function, performance and area used in FPGA. The contribution of this work is the approximation of a nonlinear function used in ANN, the popular hyperbolic tangent activation function. The system architecture is composed of several scenarios that provide a tradeoff of performance, precision and area used in FPGA. The results are compared in different scenarios and with current literature on error analysis, area and system performance. © 2013 IEEE.

Different solid composites made by mechanical dispersions of graphite particles into heated paraffin (from 65 to 80% graphite, in mass) were prepared and assessed in order to optimize their use in electrochemical and electroanalytical procedures for bioanalysis. Besides these, composites were also evaluated by thermoanalytical techniques aiming to study their conservation and long-term stability (over eight months without special care), among others. Best results were found at 80% m/m graphite in paraffin. Such electrode combines low-cost, stability, sensitivity, ease of maintenance and clearance, besides the possibilities of manufacture in many different forms and shapes (with or without modifications) and applicability in a wide range of pH. Electrochemical studies by different voltammetric techniques involving vitamins from complex B (riboflavin and pyridoxine) leaded to a better understanding about their electrooxidative processes onto carbon-composite electrodes, specially regarding reversibility and pH-dependence. Data were also acquired and optimized with analytical purposes, being square-wave voltammetry in pH 4.2 chosen by its many advantages. Good linearity between peak responses as function of concentration were reached from 5 to 43 μmol L-1 for riboflavin (peak at -0.257 V) and up to 8.5 × 10-4 mol L -1 for pyridoxine (peak at +1.04 V), best studied conditions; limits of detection (at an S/N of 3) for both analites showed to be circa 1.0 mol L-1. Different commercial samples were analyzed for riboflavin (EMS® complex B syrup) and pyridoxine (Citoneurin 5000 Merck® ampoules) providing 96.6% and 98.7% recoveries, respectively.

Vegetable oils are used in the industry of processed food, including deep-fat frying. This work determined data on the thermophysical properties of cotton, canola, sunflower, corn, and soybean oils. Thermal conductivity, heat capacity, density, and viscosity were measured within the temperature range of 299.15-433.15 K. The data showed that the temperature influenced the thermophysical properties of the oils studied. The developed correlations could be used to predict these properties within the range of temperatures studied. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

In Part XV (Implementation Monitoring and Review);, of the Programme of Action of Small Island Developing States (SIDS POA);, which was adopted at the United Nations Global Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (UNGCSIDS);, 26 April- 6 May 1994, in its paragraph 117, it is provided that the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD); should, inter alia: Carry out an initial review of the progress achieved and steps taken to implement the Programme of Action, to be undertaken by the Commission on Sustainable Development in 1996 in accordance with its Multi-Year Thematic Programme of Work. Furthermore, in 1997, when the Commission will carry out the overall review of Agenda 21 with a view to preparing for the 1997 special session of the General Assembly, the Commission should recommend specific modalities for the full review of the Programme of Action in 1999. That full review would include the question of the convening of a second global conference in accordance with chapter 17, Section G of Agenda 21. At the twenty-second special session which convened on 27-28 September 1999 to undertake a "review and appraisal of the implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States", it was recommended, inter alia, that: "Although periodic reviews of certain aspects of the Programme of Action are envisaged within the context of the work of the Commission on Sustainable Development, a full and comprehensive review of these decisions and the implementation of the Programme of Action would be useful and required in 2004." In the Plan of Implementation adopted at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD);, which convened in Johannesburg, South Africa, over the period, 26 August-4 Septemeber 2002, the relevant recommendation was as follows: "Undertake a full and comprehensive review of the implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States in 2004, in accordance with the provisions set forth in General Assembly resolution S-22/2, and in this context requests the General Assembly at its fifty-seventh session to consider convening an international meeting for the sustainable development of small island developing States."
