Data are presented on concentrations of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (AHC and PAH) in interstitial waters and bottom sediments of the Kara Sea compared to distribution of particulate matter and organic carbon. It was found that AHC concentrations within the water mass (aver. 16 µg/l) are mainly formed by natural processes. Distribution of AHC represents variability of hydrological and sedimentation processes in different regions of the sea. The widest ranges of the concentrations occurred in the Obskaya Guba - Kara Sea section: in water (10-310 µg/l for AHC and 0.4-7.2 ng/l for PAH) and in the surface layer of the bottom sediments (8-42 µg/l for AHC and 9-94 ng/g for PAH). Differentiation of hydrocarbons (HC) in different media follows regularities typical for marginal filters; therefore no oil and pyrogenic compounds are supplied to the open sea. In sediments contents of HC depend on variations in redox conditions in sediments and on their composition.

We investigated the solvent-extractable hydrocarbons, ketones, alcohols, and carboxylic acids of two Quaternary sediments from the Middle America Trench (Sections 487-2-3 and 491-1-5). These lipids are derived from a mixed input of autochthonous and allochthonous materials, with minor contributions from thermally mature sources. Their compositions are typical of those of immature Quaternary marine sediments, and their lipid distributions show many similarities to those of Japan Trench sediments.

Four dominant depositions of carbonaceous claystones are recognized to have occurred during the early Aptian to middle Albian at Site 534. There are correlations of stable isotope ratios with organic carbon content and of clay content with clay mineralogy of the samples. Almost all organic carbon in these sequences has very negative terrestrial isotope ratios, and the clay of that age indicates predominance of aluminous montmorillonite, which is thought to be of terrigenous origin. It is suggested that development of coastal vegetation belts and deltaic outbuilding with consequent outpouring of land-plant detritus and terrigenous elastics into the deep basins probably led to formation of the "black shale" facies.

Beringian climate and environmental history are poorly characterized at its easternmost edge. Lake sediments from the northern Yukon Territory have recorded sedimentation, vegetation, summer temperature and precipitation changes since ~16 cal ka BP. Herb-dominated tundra persisted until ~14.7 cal ka BP with mean July air temperatures less than or equal to 5 °C colder and annual precipitation 50 to 120 mm lower than today. Temperatures rapidly increased during the Bølling/Allerød interstadial towards modern conditions, favoring establishment of Betula-Salix shrub tundra. Pollen-inferred temperature reconstructions recorded a pronounced Younger Dryas stadial in east Beringia with a temperature drop of ~1.5 °C (~2.5 to 3.0 °C below modern conditions) and low net precipitation (90 to 170 mm) but show little evidence of an early Holocene thermal maximum in the pollen record. Sustained low net precipitation and increased evaporation during early Holocene warming suggest a moisture-limited spread of vegetation and an obscured summer temperature maximum. Northern Yukon Holocene moisture availability increased in response to a retreating Laurentide Ice Sheet, postglacial sea level rise, and decreasing summer insolation that in turn led to establishment of Alnus-Betula shrub tundra from ~5 cal ka BP until present, and conversion of a continental climate into a coastal-maritime climate near the Beaufort Sea.

Bulk chemical fine-grained sediment compositions from southern Victoria Land glacimarine sediments provide significant constraints on the reconstruction of sediment provenance models in the McMurdo Sound during Late Cenozoic time. High-resolution (~ 1 ka) geochemical data were obtained with a non-destructive AVAATECH XRF Core Scanner (XRF-CS) on the 1285 m long ANDRILL McMurdo Ice Shelf Project (MIS) sediment core AND-1B. This data set is complemented by high-precision chemical analyses (XRF and ICP-OES) on discrete samples. Statistical analyses reveal three geochemical facies which are interpreted to represent the following sources for the sediments recovered in the AND-1B core: 1) local McMurdo Volcanic Group (MVG) rocks, 2) Transantarctic Mountain rocks west of Ross Island (W TAM), and 3) Transantarctic Mountain rocks from more southerly areas (S TAM). Data indicate in combination with other sediment facies analyses (McKay et al., 2009, doi:10.1130/B26540.1) and provenance scenarios (Talarico and Sandroni, 2009, doi:10.1016/j.gloplacha.2009.04.007) that diamictites at the drill site are largely dominated by local sources (MVG) and are interpreted to indicate cold polar conditions with dry-based ice. MVG is interpreted to indicate cold polar condition with dry-based ice. A mixture of MVG and W TAM is interpreted to represent polar conditions and the S TAM facies is interpreted to represent open-marine conditions. Down-core variations in geochemical facies in the AND-1B core are interpreted to represent five major paleoclimate phases over the past 14 Ma. Cold polar conditions with major MVG influence occur below 1045 mbsf and above 120 mbsf. A section of warmer climate conditions with extensive peaks of S TAM influence characterizes the rest of the core, which is interrupted by a section from 525 to 855 mbsf of alternating influences of MVG and W TAM.

The results of nine consolidation and permeability tests are presented for sediment samples from the Japan Trench and Nankai Trough sites of Leg 87. Coring and degassing disturbance results in an underconsolidated state for most Site 582 samples; however, the compressional effects of the subduction zone and high sediment accumulation rates may also play a role in causing underconsolidation. Samples collected at Site 583 exhibit similar evidence of disturbance but are slightly overconsolidated, confirming the possibility of sediment erosion at this site. The highly diatomaceous sediments at Site 584 are all overconsolidated, but the trend of overconsolidation decreases with depth. Disturbances of the diatom clay structure may increase the sediment compressibility and create this apparent overconsolidation

This chapter summarizes the principal results of drilling at Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 595, where the Ngendei Seismic Experiment and the emplacement of DARPA's Marine Seismic System (MSS) were carried out. Background and objectives for this work are presented in the introductory chapter to this volume. Interpretation of the seismic experiment and drilling results are presented in subsequent parts of this volume. The chapter also provides a detailed operational summary of the successful deployment of the MSS during Leg 91.

Based on grain-size, mineralogical and chemical analyses of samples collected in cruises of R/V Ekolog (Institute of Northern Water Problems, Karelian Research Centre of RAS, Petrozavodsk) in 2001 and 2003 regularities of chemical element distribution in surface layer bottom sediments of the Kem' River Estuary in the White Sea were studied. For some toxic elements labile and refractory forms were determined. Correlation analysis was carried out and ratios Me/Al were calculated as proxies of terrigenous contribution. Distribution of such elements as Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, Ti was revealed to be influenced by natural factors, mainly by grain size composition of bottom sediments. These metals have a tendency for accumulation in fine-grained sediments with elevated organic carbon contents. Distribution of Ni is different from one of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, Ti. An assumption was made that these distinctions were caused by anthropogenic influence.

Quantitative characteristics for rates of diagenetic processes in the upper (0-30 cm) layer of sedimentary deposits in the area of the Spitsbergen (Svalbard) Archipelago (78°-80°N) were obtained by lithologo-geochemical, radioisotope (35S, 14C), and stable isotope (d34S, d13C) studies. It was proved that rates of diagenetic processes in polar deposits at 123-395 m depth affected by the East Spitsbergen ''warm'' current are mostly determined by bioproductivity and are commensurate with rates of processes in shelf deposits of temperate latitudes. High contents of migratory methane (up to 263 ml/dm**3) and isotopically-light organic carbon (Corg, d13C = -30 per mil PDB) were found in the 1 m layer of shelf deposits (at 123 m sea depth) with low bacterial in situ production of methane. It was shown that methane is not utilized in the deposits by the methanotrophic bacterial community and it may be supplied to the water mass and, probably, to the atmosphere.

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) from South Georgia comprise one of the most northern and abundant krill stocks. South Georgia waters are undergoing rapid warming, as a result of climate change, which in turn could alter the oxygen concentration of the water. We investigated gene expression in Antarctic krill related to aerobic metabolism, antioxidant defence, and heat-shock response under severe (2.5% O2 saturation or 0.6 kPa) and threshold (20% O2 saturation or 4 kPa) hypoxia exposure compared to in situ levels (normoxic; 100% O2 saturation or 21 kPa). Biochemical metabolic and oxidative stress indicators complemented the genic expression analysis to detect in vivo signs of stress during the hypoxia treatments. Expression levels of the genes citrate synthase (CS), mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase (SODMn-m) and one heat-shock protein isoform (E) were higher in euphausiids incubated 6 h at 20% O2 saturation than in animals exposed to control (normoxic) conditions. All biochemical antioxidant defence parameters remained unchanged among treatments. Levels of lipid peroxidation were raised after 6 h of severe hypoxia. Overall, short-term exposure to hypoxia altered mitochondrial metabolic and antioxidant capacity, but did not induce anaerobic metabolism. Antarctic krill are swarming organisms and may experience short periods of hypoxia when present in dense swarms. A future, warmer Southern ocean, where oxygen saturation levels are decreased, may result in smaller, less dense swarms as they act to avoid greater levels of hypoxia.

Originally, we had planned to piston core at Site 595 in order to meet the sedimentologic and biostratigraphic objectives outlined in the introductory chapter. However, consultation with our colleagues, Thomas Jordan and John Orcutt on board Melville, indicated that coring near the ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) array around Hole 595B could alter the programmed signal to noise ratio above which teleseisms trigger recording in the OBSs. They requested that we core no closer than about 8 km from three OBSs nearest Hole 595B, and selected a target for us about that distance to the west. Since a new beacon was required at this distance, a new site number, 596, was designated. Briefly, we planned to obtain oriented hydraulic piston cores to the top of the cherts, then core through the cherts using the extended core barrel (XCB) to basement. With improved recovery, we hoped to reach the sediment/basalt contact, and thus obtain a reliable biostratigraphic determination of the basement age. We planned to obtain at least one core in basement, perhaps more, with time permitting. We planned no geophysical program for the hole.
