Mixed ligand complexes: [Co(L)(bipy)] (.) 3H(2)O (1), [Ni(L)(phen)] (.) H2O (2), [Cu(L)(phen)] (.) 3H(2)O (3) and [Zn(L)(bipy)] (.) 3H(2)O (4), where L2- = two -COOH deprotonated dianion of N-(2-benzimidazolyl)methyliminodiacetic acid (H(2)bzimida, hereafter, H,L), bipy = 2,2' bipyridine and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline have been isolated and characterized by elemental analysis, spectral and magnetic measurements and thermal studies. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies show octahedral geometry for 1, 2 and 4 and square pyramidal geometry for 3. Equilibrium studies in aqueous solution (ionic strength I = 10(-1) mol dm(-3) (NaNO3), at 25 +/- 1 degrees C) using different molar proportions of M(II):H2L:B, where M = Co, Ni, Cu and Zn and B = phen, bipy and en (ethylene diamine), however, provides evidence of formation of mononuclear and binuclear binary and mixed ligand complexes: M(L), M(H-1L)(-), M(B)(2+), M(L)(B), M(H-1L)(B)(-), M-2(H-1L)(OH), (B)M(H-1L)M(B)(+), where H-1L3- represents two -COOH and the benzimidazole NI-H deprotonated quadridentate (O-, N, O-, N), or, quinquedentate (O-, N, O-, N, N-) function of the coordinated ligand H,L. Binuclear mixed ligand complex formation equilibria: M(L)(B) + M(B)(2+) = (B)M(H-1L)M(B)(+) + H+ is favoured with higher pi-acidity of the B ligands. For Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II), these equilibria are accompanied by blue shift of the electronic absorption maxima of M(II) ions, as a negatively charged bridging benzimidazolate moiety provides stronger ligand field than a neutral one. Solution stability of the mixed ligand complexes are in the expected order: Co(II) < Ni(II) < Cu(II) > Zn(II). The Delta logK(M) values are less negetive than their statistical values, indicating favoured formation of the mixed ligand complexes over the binary ones. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Reaction of 1-(2'-pyridylazo)-2 -naphthol (Hpan) with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] (dmso=dimethylsulfoxide), [Ru(trpy)Cl-3] (trpy=2,2',2 ''-terpyridine), [Ru(bpy)Cl-3] (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine) and [Ru(PPh3)(3)Cl-2] in refluxing ethanol in the presence of a base (NEt3) affords, respectively, the [Ru(pan)(2)], [Ru(trpy)(pan)](+) (isolated as perchlorate salt), [Ru(bpy)(pan)Cl] and [Ru(PPh3)(2)(pan)Cl] complexes. Structures of these four complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. in each of these complexes, the pan ligand is coordinated to the metal center as a monoanionic tridentate N,N,O-donor. Reaction of the [Ru(bpy)(pan)Cl] complex with pyridine (py) and 4-picoline (pic) in the presence of silver ion has yielded the [Ru(bpy)(pan)(py)](+) and [Ru(bpy)(pan)(pic)](+) complexes (isolated as perchlorate salts), respectively. All the complexes are diamagnetic (low-spin d(6), S = 0) and show characteristic H-1 NMR signals and intense MLCT transitions in the visible region. Cyclic voltammetry on all the complexes shows a Ru(II)-Ru(III) oxidation on the positive side of SCE. Except in the [Ru(pan)(2)] complex, a second oxidative response has been observed in the other five complexes. Reductions of the coordinated ligands have also been observed on the negative side of SCE. The [Ru(trpy)(pan)]ClO4, [Ru(bpy)(pan)(py)]ClO4 and [Ru(bpy) (pan)(pic)]ClO4 complexes have been observed to bind to DNA, but they have not been able to cleave super-coiled DNA on UV irradiation. Four new copper(II) complexes, [((CuLN3)-N-1)(2)](ClO4)(2) (1), [(CuL2 N-3)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2), [CuL3(N-3)ClO4)](n) (3) and [CuL4(mu-1,1-N-3)(mu-1,3-N-3)(ClO4)](n) (4) where L-1 = N-1-pyridin-2-yl-methylene-propane-1,3-diamine, L-2 = N-1-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)propane-1,3-diamine, L-3 =N-1-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)ethane-1,2-diamine and L-4=N-1-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)propane-1,2-diamine are four tridentate N,N,N donor Schiff base ligands, have been derived and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Compounds 1 and 2 consist of double basal-apical end-on (EO) azide bridged dinuclear Cu-II complexes with square-pyramidal geometry. In complex 3 the square planar mononuclear [CuL3 (N-3)] units are linked by weakly coordinated perchlorate ions in the axial positions of Cu-II to form a one-dimensional chain. Two such chains are connected by hydrogen bonds involving perchlorate ions and azide groups. Compound 4 consists of 1-D chains in which the Cu-II ions with a square-pyramidal geometry are alternately bridged by single EO and end-to-end (EE) azido ligands, both adopting a basal-apical disposition. Variable temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements and magnetization measurements at 2 K have been performed. The results reveal that complexes 1 and 2 are antiferromagnetically coupled through azido bridges (J= -12.18 +/- 0.09 and -4.43 +/- 0.1 cm(-1) for 1 and 2, respectively). Complex 3 shows two different magnetic interactions through the two kinds of hydrogen bonds; one is antiferromagnetic (J(1) = - 9.69 +/- 0.03 cm(-1)) and the other is ferromagnetic (J(2) = 1.00 +/- 0.01 cm(-1)). From a magnetic point of view complex 4 is a ferromagnetic dinuclear complex (J= 1.91 +/- 0.01 cm(-1)) coupled through the EO bridge only. The coupling through the EE bridge is practically nil as the N(azido)-Cu-II (axial) distance (2.643 angstrom) is too long. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A family of oxorhenium (V) complexes of newly designed pyridylthioazophenolate ligands has been synthesized and isolated in pure form. The solid state structure of an organic compound (HL1) has been established by X-ray crystallography. The molecular structure observed in the solid state is that the two molecules of the ligand (HL1) in the asymmetric unit have similar geometries, except for the orientation of the pyridine ring. This series of organic moieties acts as tetradentate monobasic NSNO donor chelators in oxorhenium(V) complexes which has been characterized by elemental analyses, IR, H-1-NMR, UV-Vis. The complexes are 1: 1 electrolytes in nature in MeOH solution, the counter anion being ClO4). The electrochemical studies of the [(ReO)-O-V(L)Cl]ClO4 complexes in MeCN using TBAP as supporting electrolyte exhibit quasi-reversible voltammogram showing one-electron couple for [(ReO)-O-VI(L)Cl](2+)-[(ReO)-O-V(L)Cl](+) in the 1.11-1.29 V vs SCE range.

Two sets of nickel(11) complexes of a series of tetradentate NSNO ligands were synthesized and isolated in their pure form. All these complexes, formulated as [Ni(L)Cl](2) and [Ni(L)(N-3)](2) [HL = pyridylthioazophenols], were characterized using physicochemical and spectroscopic tools. The solid-state structures of two complexes (1a and 2a) were established by X-ray crystallography. The geometry about the nickel ion of the complexes is octahedral and the complexes are dimeric in nature. In 1, two Ni(II) ions are bridged by two Cl- anions while in 2 they are bridged by two azide ions in a mu-1,1-bridging fashion. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

it has been established that triazinyl bipyridines (hemi-BTPs) and bis-triazinyl pyridines (BTPs), ligands which are currently being investigated as possible ligands for the separation of actinides from lanthanides in nuclear waste, are able to form homoleptic complexes with first row transition metals such as cobalt(IT), copper(II), iron(II), manganese(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II). The metal complexes exhibit six-co-ordinate octahedral structures and redox states largely analogous to those of the related terpyridine complexes. The reactivity of the different redox states of cobalt bis-hemi-BTP complex in aqueous environments has been studied with two-phase electrochemistry by immobilisation of the essentially water-insoluble metal complexes on graphite electrodes and the immersion of this modified electrode in an aqueous electrolyte. It was found that redox potentials for the metal-centred reactions were pH-independent whereas the potentials for the ligand-centred reactions were strongly pH-dependent. The reductive degradation of these complexes has been investigated by computational methods. Solvent extraction experiments have been carried out for a range of metals and these show that cobalt(II) and nickel(II) as well as palladium(II), cadmium(II) and lead(II) were all extracted with the ligands 1e and 2c with higher distribution ratios that was observed for americium(III) under the same conditions. The implications of this result for the use of these ligands to separate actinides from nuclear waste are discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two copper(II) complexes of the type CuL2.imidazole (1) and Cu2L4(4.4'-bpy).2H(2)O.C6H14 (2), where LH = 1-nitroso-2-naphthol and 4.4'-bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, are characterised by X-ray crystallography. In 2, the two copper atoms are linked by 4,4'-bpy. In both the complexes, copper is found to have a distorted square pyramidal N3O2 coordination sphere. The axial position in I is occupied by an oxygen atom while those in 2 by the nitrogen atoms of 4.4'-bpy. The two complexes display quasireversible Cu(III/II) couples around 0.68 V vs. saturated calomel electrode in cyclic voltammetry in dichloromethane.

The partitioning of minor trivalent actinides (An) from lanthanides (Ln) is one of the challenges in the chemical treatment of nuclear waste. The optimal ligand to carry out the separation of An(III) and Ln(III) using solvent extraction has to meet several important criteria: high selectivity towards the solute, chemical and radiolytic stability, stripping possibilities and recycling of the organic phase, high separation factors and good distribution ratio, to name just a few of them. A chronological line can be drawn along the development of each extraction ligand family and some milestones are emphasized in this overview. Further developments in organic synthesis of extracting ligands are expected.

In the title family, the ONO donor ligands are the acetylhydrazones of salicylaidehyde (H2L1) and 2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L2) (general abbreviation, H2L). The reaction of bis(acetylacetonato)oxovanadium(IV) with a mixture of tridentate H2L and a bidentate NN donor [e.g., 2,2'-bipyridine(bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline(phen), hereafter B] ligands in equimolar ratio afforded the tetravalent complexes of the type [(VO)-O-IV(L)(B)]; complexes (1)-(4) whereas, if B is replaced by 8-hydroxyquinoline(Hhq) (which is a bidentate ON donor ligand), the above reaction mixture yielded the pentavalent complexes of the type [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)]; complexes (5) and (6). Aerial oxygen is most likely the oxidant (for the oxidation of V-IV -> V-V) in the synthesis of pentavalent complexes (5) and (6). [(VO)-O-IV(L)(B)] complexes are one electron paramagnetic and display axial EPR spectra, while the [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] complexes are diamagnetic. The X-ray structure of [(VO)-O-V(L-2)(hq)] (6) indicates that H2L2 ligand is bonded with the vanadium meridionally in a tridentate dinegative fashion through its phenolic-O, enolic-O and imine-N atoms. The general bond length order is: oxo < phenolato < enolato. The V-O (enolato) bond is longer than V-O (phenolato) bond by similar to 0.07 angstrom and is identical with V-O (carboxylate) bond. H-1 NMR spectrum of (6) in CDCl3 solution indicates that the binding nature in the solid state is also retained in solution. Complexes (1)(4) display two ligand-field transitions in the visible region near 820 and 480 nm in DMF solution and exhibit irreversible oxidation peak near +0.60 V versus SCE in DMSO solution, while complexes (5) and (6) exhibit only LMCT band near 535 nm and display quasi-reversible one electron reduction peak near -0.10 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 solution. The VO3+-VO2+ E-1/2 values shift considerably to more negative values when neutral NN donor is replaced by anionic ON donor species and it also provides better VO3+ binding via phenolato oxygen. For a given bidentate ligand, E-1/2 increases in the order: (L-2)(2-) < (L-1)(2-). (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

[(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)] reacts with an equimolar amount of benzoyl hydrazones of 2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L1), 2-hydroxy-5-methylacetophenone (H2L2) and 5-chloro-2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L4) in methanol to afford the penta-coordinated mixed-ligand methoxy bonded oxidovanadium(V) complexes [(VO)-O-V(L-1)-(OCHA(3))](1). [(VO)-O-V(L-2)(OCH3)](2), and [(VO)-O-V(L-4)(OCH3)](4), respectively, whereas, the similar reaction with the benzoyl hydrazone of 2-hydroxy-5-methoxyacetophenone (H2L3) producing only the hexa-coordinated dimethoxy-bridged dimeric complex [(VO)-O-V(L-3)(OCH3)](2) (3A). Similar type of hexa-coordinated dimeric analogue of 1 i.e., [(VO)-O-V(L-1)(OCH3)](2) (1A) was obtained from the reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)] with the equimolar amount of H2L1 in presence of half equivalent 4,4'-bipyridine in methanol while the decomposition of [(VO)-O-IV(L-2)(bipy)] complex in methanol afforded the dimeric analogue of 2 i.e., [(VO)-O-V(L-2)(OCH3)](2) (2A). All these dimeric complexes 1A-3A react with an excess amount of imidazole in methanol producing the respective monomeric complex. The X-ray structural analysis of 1-3 and their dimeric analogues 1A-3A indicates that the geometry around the vanadium center in the monomeric form is distorted square-pyramidal while that of their respective dimeric forms is distorted octahedral, where the ligands are bonded to vanadium meridionally in their fully deprotonated enol forms. Due to the formation of bridge, the V-O(methoxy) bond in the dimeric complexes is lengthened to such an extent that it becomes equal in length with the V-O(phenolate) bond in 3A and even longer in 1A and 2A, which is unprecedented. The H-1 NMR spectra of the complexes 1A-3A in CDCl3 solution, indicates that these dimeric complexes are converted appreciably into their respective monomeric form. Complexes are electro-active displaying one quasi-reversible reduction peak near +0.25 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 solution. The E-1/2 values of the complexes show linear relationship with the Hammett parameter (sigma) of the substituents. All these VO3+-complexes are converted to the corresponding complexes with V2O34+ motif simply on refluxing them in acetone and to the complexes with VO2+ motif on reaction with 2 KOH in methanol. Four trinuclear Cu(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](NO3)(2) (1), [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](I)(2)center dot H2O (2), [(CuL3)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](I)(2) (3) and [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)][(CuI3)-I-1] (4), where HL1 (8-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one), HL2 [7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one] and HL3 [7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2- one] are the three tridentate Schiff bases, have been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. All four complexes contain a partial cubane core, [(CuL)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](2+) in which the three [CuL] subunits are interconnected through two types of oxygen bridges afforded by the oxygen atoms of the ligands and the central OH- group. The copper(II) ions are in a distorted square-pyramidal environment. The equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen of the central OH- group together with three atoms (N, N, O) from the Schiff base. The oxygen atom of the Schiff base also coordinates to the axial position of Cu(II) of another subunit to form the cyclic trimer. Magnetic susceptibilities have been determined for these complexes over the temperature range of 2-300 K. The isotropic Hamiltonian, H = -J(12)S(1)S(2) - J(13)S(1)S(3) - J(23)S(2)S(3) has been used to interpret the magnetic data. The best fit parameters obtained are: J = - 54.98 cm(-1) g = 2.24 for 1; J = - 56.66 cm(-1), g = 2.19 for 2; J = -44.39 cm(-1), g = 2.16 for 3; J = - 89.92 cm(-1), g = 2.25 for 4. The EPR data at low temperature indicate that the phenomenon of spin frustration occurs for complexes 1-3. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The previously synthesised Schiff-base ligands 2-(2-Ph2PC6H4N = CH) - R' - C6H3OH (R' = 3-OCH3, HL1; 5-OCH3, HL2; 5-Br, HL3; 5-Cl, HL4) were prepared by a faster, more efficient route involving a microwave assisted co-condensation of 2-(diphenylphosphino) aniline with the appropriate substituted salicylaldehyde. HL1-4 react directly with (MCl2)-Cl-II (M = Pd, Pt) or (PtI2)-I-II(cod) affording neutral square-planar complexes of general formula [(MCl)-Cl-II(eta(3)-L1-4)] (M = Pd, Pt, 1 - 8) and [(PtI)-I-II(eta(3)-L1-4)] (M = Pd, Pt, 9 - 12). Reaction of complexes 1 - 4 with the triarylphosphines PR3 (R = Ph, p-tolyl) gave the novel ionic complexes [Pd-II(PR3)(eta(3)- L1-4)] ClO4 (13 - 20). Substituted platinum complexes of the type [Pt-II(PR3)(eta(3)- L1-4)] ClO4 (R = P(CH2CH2CN)(3) 21 - 24) and [Pt-II( P(p-tolyl)(3))(eta(3)-L-3,L-4)] ClO4 ( 25 and 26) were synthesised from the appropriate [(PtCl)-Cl-II(eta(3)-L1-4)] complex (5 - 8) and PR3. The complexes are characterised by microanalytical and spectroscopic techniques. The crystal structures of 3, 6, 10, 15, 20 and 26 were determined and revealed the metal to be in a square-planar four-coordinate environment containing a planar tridentate ligand with an O, N, P donor set together with one further atom which is trans to the central nitrogen atom.

Three new basal-apical, mu(2)-1,1-azide bridged complexes, [CuL1(N-3)](2) (1), [CuL2(N-3)](2) (2) and [CuL3(N-3)]2 (3) with very similar tridentate Schiff base blocking ligands [L-1=N-(3-aminopropyl) salicylaldimine, L-2=7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one and L-3=8-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one) have been synthesised and their molecular structures determined by X-ray crystallography. In complex 1, there is no inter-dimer H-bonding. However, complexes 2 and 3 form two different supramolecular structures in which the dinuclear entities are linked by strong H-bonds giving one-dimensional systems. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements and magnetization measurements at 2 K reveal that complexes 1 and 2 have antiferromagnetic coupling while 3 has ferromagnetic coupling which is also confirmed by EPR spectra at 4-300 K. Magnetostructural correlations have been made taking into consideration both the azido bridging ligands and the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds in complexes 2 and 3.
