It is often assumed that total head losses in a sand filter are solely due to the filtration media and that there are analytical solutions, such as the Ergun equation, to compute them. However, total head losses are also due to auxiliary elements (inlet and outlet pipes and filter nozzles), which produce undesirable head losses because they increase energy requirements without contributing to the filtration process. In this study, ANSYS Fluent version 6.3, a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software program, was used to compute head losses in different parts of a sand filter. Six different numerical filter models of varying complexities were used to understand the hydraulic behavior of the several filter elements and their importance in total head losses. The simulation results show that 84.6% of these were caused by the sand bed and 15.4% were due to auxiliary elements (4.4% in the outlet and inlet pipes, and 11.0% in the perforated plate and nozzles). Simulation results with different models show the important role of the nozzles in the hydraulic behavior of the sand filter. The relationship between the passing area through the nozzles and the passing area through the perforated plate is an important design parameter for the reduction of total head losses. A reduced relationship caused by nozzle clogging would disproportionately increase the total head losses in the sand filter

This paper presents a novel technique to align partial 3D reconstructions of the seabed acquired by a stereo camera mounted on an autonomous underwater vehicle. Vehicle localization and seabed mapping is performed simultaneously by means of an Extended Kalman Filter. Passive landmarks are detected on the images and characterized considering 2D and 3D features. Landmarks are re-observed while the robot is navigating and data association becomes easier but robust. Once the survey is completed, vehicle trajectory is smoothed by a Rauch-Tung-Striebel filter obtaining an even better alignment of the 3D views and yet a large-scale acquisition of the seabed

The objective of the research was to study the influence of temperature, oxygen pressure, catalysts loading and initial COD concentration of debarking wastewater on the pollutants during the catalytic oxidation. More importantly, how the addition of catalyst affects the wet oxidation process. The whole work was divided into two main sections, theoretical and experimental parts. The theoretical part reviews the pulp and paper industry from wood processing to paper production as well as operations that generate wastes. Treatment methods applicable for industrial pulp and paper mill effluents were also discussed. Wet oxidation and catalytic wet oxidation processes including mechanism, reactions, kinetics and industrial applications were previewed. In the experimental part, catalytic wet oxidation process were studied at 120-180°C, 0-10 bar oxygen pressure, 0-1 g/L catalyst concentration and 1000-3000 mg/L initial COD concentration. Responses, such as Chemical oxygen demand (COD), Total organic carbon (TOC), colour, lignin/tannin, Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and pH were measured. In the experiment, the best conditions occurred at 180°C, 10 bar, l g/L catalyst concentration and 3000mg/L initial COD. At these conditions; 74% COD, 97% lignin/tannin, 54% TOC, 90% colour were removed from the wastewater. pH was greatly reduced from 7 to 4.6. Lignin/tannin was removed most. Lignin/tannin showed linear dependency with colour during oxidation. Temperature made the most impact in reducing contaminants in debarked wastewater.

The paper industry has been experiencing remarkable structural changes since paper demand growth has ceased and some markets are declining. One reason behind the declined demand is the Internet, which has partially substituted the newspaper as a source of information. Paper products alone can no longer provide livelihood, and the paper industry has to find new business areas. In this research, we studied radio frequency identification (RFID), and the market opportunities it could provide for paper industry. The research combined a quantitative industry analysis and qualitative interviews. RFID is a growing industry in the beginning of its life cycle, in which value chains and technologies still evolve significantly. The industry is going to concentrate on the future, and in the long term RFID-identifiers will probably be printed on paper substrate or directly onto products. Paper industry has the chance to enter the RFID industry, but it has to obtain the required competences, for example through acquisitions. The business potential RFID offers to paper industry is inadequate, and while reviewing new strategic options, the paper industry must consider more options, for example the entire printed intelligence.

The purpose of this work was to study the characteristics of the most commonly used filter aid materials and their influences on the design of proportioning, mixing, and feeding system for polishing filter family. Based on the literature survey and hands-on experience a system was designed with defined equipment and capital and operating costs. The system was designed to serve precoating and bodyfeeding applications and is easily extended to be used in multiple filter processes. Also a test procedure was carried out where influences of flux and filter cloths to accumulated cake were studied. Filter aid is needed in challenging conditions to improve filtration efficiency and cleaning, and thus extend the operating life of the filter media. Filter aid preparation and feeding system was designed for the use of two different filter aids; precoat and bodyfeed. Precoating is used before the filtration step initiates. If the solids in the filterable solution have a tendency to clog the filter bag easily, precoat is used on the filter bag to obtain better filtration efficiency and quality. Diatomite or perlite is usually used as a precoating substance. The intention is to create a uniform cake to the overall surface of the filter cloth, with predetermined thickness, 2 – 5 mm. This ensures that the clogging of the filter cloth is reduced and the filtration efficiency is increased. Bodyfeed is used if the solids in the filterable solution have a tendency to form a sticky impermeable filter cake. The cake properties are enhanced by maintaining the permeability of the accumulating cake by using the filter aid substance as bodyfeed during the filtration process.

In this thesis, cleaning of ceramic filter plates clogged by iron oxides was studied. Oxalic acid is considered as the most effective cleaning agent for the plates fouled by iron oxides, but when using oxalic acid, sparingly soluble calcium oxalate may be formed and it can blind the filter media. Suitability of another chemical for cleaning the plates clogged by iron oxides was studied in this thesis. The literature part was mostly about the properties of the chemical, about its reactions, industrial uses, safety issues etc. In the experimental part, the efficiency of the chemical for cleaning of the ceramic plates clogged by iron oxides was studied. Two kinds of plates were used in the experiments; the others were clogged by hematite and the others by magnetite. Both soaking and flow-through experiments were done. A suitable concentration, pH and temperature were tried to find in the experiments. Also the effect of ultrasound was studied. The efficiency of the cleaning was examined by measuring the permeability of the plates during the experiments. ICP-OES analysis was performed for determining the amount of dissolved iron in the washing solution. Some experiments were also done with oxalic acid. The results from the oxalic acid experiments were compared to the results from the experiments with the other chemical. In the experiments with the other chemical, the permeability increased more and the amounts of dissolved iron were larger. According to the results from the experiments, the method of application of the washing solutions had an impact on the washing results.

In the present diploma work optical inspection methods were used to investigate surface roughness of paper samples. A special measurement setup, which includes three laser light sources of three different wavelengths, photodetector and goniometer, was used to measure the reflected laser light properties. The intensity of the light reflected in specular direction was measured versus the laser incidence angle for reference metal sample. The value of roughness was estimated and compared to initially known value of metal sample roughness. Thus, the measurement equipment and method were validated. Then the reflected intensity was measured versus reflection angle at constant incidence angle for the same metal sample and paper samples under investigation. The final values of the surface roughness were obtained from the analysis of the reflected intensity dependence. The results are in good correlation with other research groups.

Streaming potential measurements for the surface charge characterisation of different filter media types and materials were used. The equipment was developed further so that measurements could be taken along the surfaces, and so that tubular membranes could also be measured. The streaming potential proved to be a very useful tool in the charge analysis of both clean and fouled filter media. Adsorption and fouling could be studied, as could flux, as functions of time. A module to determine the membrane potential was also constructed. The results collected from the experiments conducted with these devices were used in the study of the theory of streaming potential as an electrokinetic phenomenon. Several correction factors, which are derived to take into account the surface conductance and the electrokinetic flow in very narrow capillaries, were tested in practice. The surface materials were studied using FTIR and the results compared with those from the streaming potentials. FTIR analysis was also found to be a useful tool in the characterisation of filters, as well as in the fouling studies. Upon examination of the recorded spectra from different depths in a sample it was possible to determine the adsorption sites. The influence of an external electric field on the cross flow microflltration of a binary protein system was investigated using a membrane electroflltration apparatus. The results showed that a significant improvement could be achieved in membrane filtration by using the measured electrochemical properties to help adjust the process conditions.

Nanofiltration performance was studied with effluents from the pulp and paper industry and with model substances. The effect of filtration conditions and membrane properties on nanofiltration flux, retention, and fouling was investigated. Generally, the aim was to determine the parameters that influence nanofiltration efficiency and study how to carry out nanofiltration without fouling by controlling these parameters. The retentions of the nanofiltration membranes studied were considerably higher than those of tight ultrafiltration membranes, and the permeate fluxes obtained were approximately the same as those of tight ultrafiltration membranes. Generally, about 80% retentions of total carbon and conductivity were obtained during the nanofiltration experiments. Depending on the membrane and the filtration conditions, the retentions of monovalent ions (chloride) were between 80 and 95% in the nanofiltrations. An increase in pH improved retentions considerably and also the flux to some degree. An increase in pressure improved retention, whereas an increase in temperature decreased retention if the membrane retained the solute by the solution diffusion mechanism. In this study, more open membranes fouled more than tighter membranes due to higher concentration polarization and plugging of the membrane material. More irreversible fouling was measured for hydrophobic membranes. Electrostatic repulsion between the membrane and the components in the solution reduced fouling but did not completely prevent it with the hydrophobic membranes. Nanofiltration could be carried out without fouling, at least with the laboratory scale apparatus used here when the flux was below the critical flux. Model substances had a strong form of the critical flux, but the effluents had only a weak form of the critical flux. With the effluents, some fouling always occurred immediately when the filtration was started. However, if the flux was below the critical flux, further fouling was not observed. The flow velocity and pH were probably the most important parameters, along with the membrane properties, that influenced the critical flux. Precleaning of the membranes had only a small effect on the critical flux and retentions, but it improved the permeability of the membranes significantly.

The singular properties of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) thin filmsdeposited by pulsed DC plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), such as hardness and wear resistance, make it suitable as protective coating with low surface energy for self-assembly applications. In this paper, we designed fluorine-containing a-C:H (a-C:H:F) nanostructured surfaces and we characterized them for self-assembly applications. Sub-micron patterns were generated on silicon through laser lithography while contact angle measurements, nanotribometer, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the surface. a-C:H:F properties on lithographied surfaces such as hydrophobicity and friction were improved with the proper relative quantity of CH4 and CHF3 during deposition, resulting in ultrahydrophobic samples and low friction coefficients. Furthermore, these properties were enhanced along the direction of the lithographypatterns (in-plane anisotropy). Finally, self-assembly properties were tested with silicananoparticles, which were successfully assembled in linear arrays following the generated patterns. Among the main applications, these surfaces could be suitable as particle filter selector and cell colony substrate.

The disintegration of recovered paper is the first operation in the preparation of recycled pulp. It is known that the defibering process follows a first order kinetics from which it is possible to obtain the disintegration kinetic constant (KD) by means of different ways. The disintegration constant can be obtained from the Somerville index results (%lsv and from the dissipated energy per volume unit (Ss). The %slv is related to the quantity of non-defibrated paper, as a measure of the non-disintegrated fiber residual (percentage of flakes), which is expressed in disintegration time units. In this work, disintegration kinetics from recycled coated paper has been evaluated, working at 20 revise rotor speed and for different fiber consistency (6, 8, 10, 12 and 14%). The results showed that the values of experimental disintegration kinetic constant, Ko, through the analysis of Somerville index, as function of time. Increased, the disintegration time was drastically reduced. The calculation of the disintegration kinetic constant (modelled Ko), extracted from the Rayleigh’s dissipation function, showed a good correlation with the experimental values using the evolution of the Somerville index or with the dissipated energy

Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) is known to enhance strength properties of paper. Improved strength usually means increased bonding which is strongly connected to dimensional instability of paper. Dimensional instability is due to changes in moisture content of paper; when paper is moistened it expands and when dried, it shrinks. Hygroexpansion is linked to end-use problems and excessive drying shrinkage consumes strength potential. Effective use of materials requires controlling of these phenomena. There isn’t yet data concerning dimensional stability of papers containing MFC which restricts wider use of MFC. Main objective of the work was to evaluate dimensional stability of wood-free paper containing different amounts of MFC. Sheets were dried with different methods to see how drying strains effected on drying shrinkage and hygroexpansion. Also tensile strength was measured to find out the effect of MFC. Results were compared to sheets containing kraft fines and in some test points cationic starch was used alongside with MFC. MFC increased the dimensional instability of freely dried sheets. As the amounts of MFC increased the effects on dimensional stability became more severe. However the fineness of MFC didn’t play any important role. Both hygroexpansion and drying shrinkage were decreased with cationic starch addition. Prevention of drying shrinkage over powered the effects of additives on hygroexpansion. Tensile strength improved up till 7 % addition amount which could be set as the upper limit of MFC addition when paper preparation and tensile strength are concerned.

The main objective of this thesis was to compare the efficiency of counter-current and co-current filter cake washing techniques. Filter cake washing is a common unit operation which is used in the chemical process industry for improving the recovery of the liquid phase or for purifying the solid phase of the filter cake. Counter-current displacement washing is more difficult to arrange and it requires additional process equipment but the advantage of counter-current method is that the consumption of wash water that is required for achieving certain filter cake purity may be considerably decreased when compared to the co-current washing method. This is true especially for materials that are difficult to wash. The literature part of this thesis consists of a review of filter cake washing in general, including the basic principles of co-current and counter-current techniques, and a description of the structure and operation of a horizontal vacuum belt filter, which is the equipment considered in the experimental part of this thesis. Also the most common cake washing models are introduced. The experiments were performed by washing wheat apatite filter cakes in a laboratory scale vacuum filter by using both co-current and counter-current washing methods. The main results of these tests were the washing curves that relate the purity of the filter cake to the amount of wash liquid used. Comparison between the obtained washing curves showed that both washing methods could be efficiently applied for achieving good washing results. The differences between the wash liquid consumptions in the co-current and counter-current washing methods were found to be surprisingly small but this is most probably explained by the relatively good washing characteristics of the apatite cakes. The washing models introduced in the literature part were compared with the results obtained from the experiments and it was found out that the studied cake washing processes could be described
