The merits of various numerical methods for the solution of the one and two dimensional heat conduction equation with a radiation boundary condition have been examined from a practical standpoint in order to determine accuracies and efficiencies. It is found that the use of five increments to approximate the space derivatives gives sufficiently accurate results provided the time step is not too large; further, the implicit backward difference method of Liebmann (27) is found to be the most accurate method. On this basis, a new implicit method is proposed for the solution of the three-dimensional heat conduction equation with radiation boundary conditions. The accuracies of the integral and analogue computer methods are also investigated.

In this paper, we described an efficient theoretical approach to determine the integral characteristics such as Mode Field Diameter (MFD) and V-parameter of the Weakly guiding waveguides. To test the described method we measured MFD for the commercially available step index single mode fibre with known parameters. The results of these measurements are presented for two different wavelengths. It is worth noting that the developed approach implies infinite cladding, thus care should be taken to avoid influence of finiteness of cladding when MFD compares to cladding diamete.

An iterative procedure for determining temperature fields from Cauchy data given on a part of the boundary is presented. At each iteration step, a series of mixed well-posed boundary value problems are solved for the heat operator and its adjoint. A convergence proof of this method in a weighted L2-space is included, as well as a stopping criteria for the case of noisy data. Moreover, a solvability result in a weighted Sobolev space for a parabolic initial boundary value problem of second order with mixed boundary conditions is presented. Regularity of the solution is proved. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

The problem considered is that of determining the shape of a planar acoustically sound-soft obstacle from knowledge of the far-field pattern for one time-harmonic incident field. Two methods, which are based on the solution of a pair of integral equations representing the incoming wave and the far-field pattern, respectively, are proposed and investigated for finding the unknown boundary. Numerical resultsare included which show that the methods give accurate numerical approximations in relatively few iterations.

An iterative method for reconstruction of the solution to a parabolic initial boundary value problem of second order from Cauchy data is presented. The data are given on a part of the boundary. At each iteration step, a series of well-posed mixed boundary value problems are solved for the parabolic operator and its adjoint. The convergence proof of this method in a weighted L2-space is included.

An iterative method for the reconstruction of a stationary three-dimensional temperature field, from Cauchy data given on a part of the boundary, is presented. We consider a model eigenvalue problem (EVP) in 1D, with periodic or semi–periodic boundary conditions (BCs). The discretization of this type of EVP by consistent mass finite element methods (FEMs) leads to the generalized matrix EVP Kc = λ M c, where K and M are real, symmetric matrices, with a certain (skew–)circulant structure. In this paper we fix our attention to the use of a quadratic FE–mesh. Explicit expressions for the eigenvalues of the resulting algebraic EVP are established. This leads to an explicit form for the approximation error in terms of the mesh parameter, which confirms the theoretical error estimates, obtained in [2].

This survey is devoted to some fractional extensions of the incomplete lumped formulation, the lumped formulation and the formulation of Lauwerier of the temperature field problem in oil strata. The method of integral transforms is used to solve the corresponding boundary value problems for the fractional heat equation. By using Caputo’s differintegration operator and the Laplace transform, new integral forms of the solutions are obtained. In each of the different cases the integrands are expressed in terms of a convolution of two special functions of Wright’s type.
