This paper describes an automatic device for in situ and continuous monitoring of the ageing process occurring in natural and synthetic resins widely used in art and in the conservation and restoration of cultural artefacts. The results of tests carried out under accelerated ageing conditions are also presented. This easy-to-assemble palm-top device, essentially consists of oscillators based on quartz crystal resonators coated with films of the organic materials whose response to environmental stress is to be addressed. The device contains a microcontroller which selects at pre-defined time intervals the oscillators and records and stores their oscillation frequency. The ageing of the coatings, caused by the environmental stress and resulting in a shift in the oscillation frequency of the modified crystals, can be straightforwardly monitored in this way. The kinetics of this process reflects the level of risk damage associated with a specific microenvironment. In this case, natural and artificial resins, broadly employed in art and restoration of artistic and archaeological artefacts (dammar and Paraloid B72), were applied onto the crystals. The environmental stress was represented by visible and UV radiation, since the chosen materials are known to be photochemically active, to different extents. In the case of dammar, the results obtained are consistent with previous data obtained using a bench-top equipment by impedance analysis through discrete measurements and confirm that the ageing of this material is reflected in the gravimetric response of the modified quartz crystals. As for Paraloid B72, the outcome of the assays indicates that the resin is resistant to visible light, but is very sensitive to UV irradiation. The use of a continuous monitoring system, apart from being obviously more practical, is essential to identify short-term (i.e. reversible) events, like water vapour adsorption/desorption processes, and to highlight ageing trends or sudden changes of such trends. In this work the effect of doping concentration and depth profile of Cu atoms on the photocatalytic and surface properties of TiO(2) films were studied. TiO(2) films of about 200 nn thickness were deposited on glass substrates on which a thin Cu layer (5 nm) was deposited. The films were annealed during 1 s to 100 degrees C and 400 degrees C, followed by chemical etching of the Cu film. The grazing incidence X-ray fluorescence measurements showed a thermal induced migration of Cu atoms to depths between 7 and 31 nm. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis detected the presence of TiO(2), Cu(2)O and Cu(0) phases and an increasing Cu content with the annealing temperature. The change of the surface properties was monitored by the increasing red-shift and absorption of the ultraviolet-visible spectra. Contact angle measurements revealed the formation of a highly hydrophilic surface for the film having a medium Cu concentration. For this sample photocatalytic assays, performed by methylene blue discoloration, show the highest activity. The proposed mechanism of the catalytic effect, taking place on Ti/Cu sites, is supported by results obtained by theoretical calculations. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, we study the effect of doping depth profile on the photocatalytic and surface properties of TiO(2) films. Two thin film layers of TiO(2) (200 nm) and Co (5 nm), respectively, were deposited by physical evaporation on glass substrate. These films were annealed for 1 s at 100 and 400 A degrees C and the Co layer was removed by chemical etching. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) phase images showed changes in the surface in function of thermal treatment. The grazing-incidence X-ray fluorescence (GIXRF) measurements indicated that the thermal treatment caused migration of Co atoms to below the surface, the depths found were between 19 and 29 nm. The contact angle showed distinct values in function of the doped profile or Co surface concentration. The UV-vis spectra presented a red shift with the increasing of thermal treatment. Photocatalytical assays were performed by methylene blue discoloration and the higher activity was found for TiO(2)-Co treated at 400 A degrees C, the ESI-MS showed the fragments formed during the methylene blue decomposition.

Hybrid photocatalysts based on an adsorbent SiMgOx and a photocatalyst TiO(2) were developed in a plate shape. The ceramic surface was coated with TiO(2) by the slip-casting technique. The effect of the support in the photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) was analyzed by modifying TiO(2) loading and the layer thickness. Photocatalysts were characterised by N(2) adsorption-desorption, mercury intrusion porosimetry, SEM, UV-vis spectroscopy and XRD. A direct relationship between the TiO(2) content and the photocatalytic activity was observed up to three layers of TiO(2) (0.66 wt.%). Our results indicate that intermediate species generated on the TiO(2) layer can migrate through relatively long distances to react with the OH(-) surface groups of the support. By increasing the TiO(2) loading of the photocatalyst two effects were observed: trichloroethylene conversion is enhanced, while the efficiency of the oxidation process is decreased at expenses of increasing the selectivity to COCl(2) and dichloroacetylchloride (DCAC). The results are discussed in terms of the layer thickness, TiO(2) amount, TCE conversion and CO(2), and COCl(2) selectivity. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Pt monolayer electrocatalysts for O-2 reduction: PdCo/C substrate-induced activity in alkaline media
Resumo:
We measured the activity of electrocatalysts, comprising Pt monolayers deposited on PdCo/C substrates with several Pd/Co atomic ratios, in the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline solutions. The PdCo/C substrates have a core-shell structure wherein the Pd atoms are segregated at the particle`s surface. The electrochemical measurements were carried out using an ultrathin film rotating disk-ring electrode. Electrocatalytic activity for the O-2 reduction evaluated from the Tafel plots or mass activities was higher for Pt monolayers on PdCo/C compared to Pt/C for all atomic Pd/Co ratios we used. We ascribed the enhanced activity of these Pt monolayers to a lowering of the bond strength of oxygenated intermediates on Pt atoms facilitated by changes in the 5d-band reactivity of Pt. Density functional theory calculations also revealed a decline in the strength of PtOH adsorption due to electronic interaction between the Pt and Pd atoms. We demonstrated that very active O-2 reduction electrocatalysts can be devised containing only a monolayer Pt and a very small amount of Pd alloyed with Co in the substrate.

This study presents the results of the degradation of the pesticide atrazine using electrochemical and photo-assisted electrochemical degradation techniques using SnO(2)-containing electrode of nominal composition electrodes of composition Ti/Ru(x)Sni-(x)O(2) (where X = 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25 and 0.30). The materials were characterized ex situ and in situ in order to correlate the observed atrazine removal rates with electrode morphology/composition. The results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of the photo-assisted electrochemical degradation. Using purely electrochemical methods the rate of atrazine removal is almost zero at all the electrodes studied. However, the application of photo-assisted degradation results in almost complete atrazine removal in 1 h of electrolysis. The efficiency of atrazine degradation does not seem to be greatly affected by the electrode material or by SnO(2) content, but the overall COD removal is dependent on the SnO(2) content. Overall, the SnO(2)-containing electrodes do not reach the level of COD removal (maximum similar to 21%) seen for the Ti/Ru(0.3)Ti(0.2)O(2) electrode. An interesting correlation between the morphology factor (phi) and chemical oxygen demand removal is observed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the results concerning the degradation of the pesticide carbaryl comparing two methods: electrochemical (EC) and photo-assisted electrochemical (PAEC). The experimental variables of applied current density, electrolyte flow-rate and initial carbaryl concentration were investigated. The results demonstrate that the electrochemical degradation of carbaryl was greatly enhanced when simultaneous UV light was applied. The greatest difference between the PAEC and EC method was apparent when lower current densities were applied. The extent of COD removal was much enhanced for the combined method, independent of the applied current density. It should be noted that the complete removal of carbaryl was achieved with out the need to add NaCl to the reaction mixture, avoiding the risk of chlorinated organic species formation. This work assesses the photocatalytic (TiO2/UV) degradation of a simulated acid dye bath (Yellow 3, Red 51, Blue 74, and auxiliary chemicals). Color and phytotoxicity removal were monitored by spectrophotometry and lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seeds as the test organism, respectively. Mineralization was determined by DOC analyses. Photocatalytic, photolytic, and adsorption experiments were performed, showing that adsorption was negligible. After 240 minutes of irradiation, it was achieved 96% and 78% of color removal with photocatalysis and photolysis, respectively. 37% of mineralization occurred with photocatalysis only. The dye bath was rendered completely non-toxic after 60 minutes of photocatalytic treatment; the same result was only achieved with photolysis after 90 minutes. A kinetic model composed of two first-order in series reactions was used. The first photocatalytic decolorization rate constant was k(1) = 0.062 min(-1) and the second k(2) = 0.0043 min(-1), approximately two times greater than the photolytic ones.

The giant extracellular hemoglobin of Glossoscolex paulistus (HbGp) has a molecular mass (M) of 3600 +/- 100 kDa and a standard sedimentation coefficient (s(20.w)(0)) of 58 S. estimated by analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC). In the present work, further AUC studies were developed for HbGp, at pH 10.0, which favors oligomeric dissociation into lower M species. The HbGp oligomer is formed by globin chains a, b, c and d plus the linker chains. The pure monomeric fraction, subunit d, and HbGp at pH 10.0, in the presence of beta-mercaptoethanol, were also studied. Our results indicate that for samples of pure subunit d, besides the monomeric species with s(20.w)(0) of 2.0 S, formation of dimer of subunit d is observed with s(20.w)(0) of around 2.9 S. For the whole HbGp at pH 10.0 contributions from monomers, trimers and linkers are observed. No contribution from 58 S species was observed for the sample of oxy-HbGp at pH 10.0, showing its complete dissociation. For cyanomet-HbGp form a contribution of 17% is observed for the un-dissociated oligomer, consistent with data from other techniques that show the cyanomet-form is more stable as compared to oxy-HbGp. Masses of HbGp subunits, especially trimer abc and monomeric chains a, b, c and d, were also estimated from sedimentation equilibrium data, and are in agreement with the results from MALDI-TOF-MS. The electrochemical activation and physical degradation of boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes with different boron doping levels after repeated cathodic pretreatments are reported. Galvanostatic cathodic pretreatment passing up to -14000 C cm(-2) in steps of -600 C cm(-2) using -1 A cm(-2) caused significant physical degradation of the BDD surface, with film detachment in some areas. Because of this degradation, a great increase in the electrochemically active area was observed in Tafel plots for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acid media. The minimum cathodic pretreatment needed for the electrochemical activation of the BDD electrodes without producing any observable physical degradation on the BDD surfaces was determined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements and cyclic voltammetry: -9 C cm(-2), passed at -1 A cm(-2). This optimized cathodic pretreatment can be safely used when electrochemical experiments are carried out on BDD electrodes with doping levels in the range between 800 and 8000 ppm.

This paper presents a degradation study of the pesticide atrazine using photo-assisted electrochemical methods at a dimensionally stable anode (DSA (R)) of nominal composition Ti/Ru(0.3)Ti(0.7)O(2) in a prototype reactor. The effects of current density, electrolyte flow-rate, as well as the use of different atrazine concentrations are reported. The results indicate that the energy consumption is substantially reduced for the combined photochemical and electrochemical processes when compared to the isolated systems. It is observed that complete atrazine removal is achieved at low current densities when using the combined method, thus reducing the energy required to operate the electrochemical system. The results also include the investigation of the phytotoxicity of the treated solutions.

In the present study, photo-assisted electrochemical degradation of real textile wastewater was performed. Degradation assays were performed at constant current (40 mA cm(-2)) in a combined electro/photochemical flow-cell using a Ti/Ru(0.3)Ti(0.7)O(2) DSA(R) type electrode. The results show that the method is capable of removing color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from the effluent. Additionally, the effect of initial pH and type of supporting electrolyte (Na(2)SO(4) or NaCl) was investigated. The principal figures of merit used in this study were COD removal and color removal (605 nm). The results show that up to 72% color and up to 59% COD removal in 120 min is possible under the operating conditions employed. Studies of the phytotoxicity of the wastewater before and after the photo-assisted degradation assays are also presented and the results demonstrate that the toxicity of the effluent is dependent on the length of electrolysis time and the treatment procedure employed.

Alachlor has been widely used in agriculture all over the world. It is suggested that it may be a carcinogen and an environmental estrogen. The aim of this work was to verify the degradation the alachlor by gamma radiation. Gamma radiation from (60)Co was used to degrade the alachlor herbicide in water and methanol solution. The alachlor in water and alcohol solution in the concentration of 100 mgL(-1) was irradiated with doses of 0.25-50 kGy, at dose rate 5-6 and 2.7 kGyh(-1). High performance liquid chromatography was used as an analytical technique to determine the degradation rate of herbicide studied.

This work assesses the photocatalytic (TiO(2)/UV) degradation of a simulated reactive dye bath (Black 5, Red 239, Yellow 17, and auxiliary chemicals). Color removal was monitored by spectrophotometry. Mineralization was determined by DOC analyses. Photocatalytic, photolytic, and adsorption experiments were performed, showing that adsorption was negligible. After 30 min of irradiation, it was achieved 97% and 40% of color removal with photocatalysis and photolysis, respectively. No mineralization occurred within 30 min. A kinetic model composed of two, first-order in-series reactions was used. The first photocatalytic decolorization rate constant was k(1) = 2.6 min(-1) and the second k(2) = 0.011 min(-1). The fast decolorization of Reactive Black 5 dye is an indication that the number of azo and vinylsulfone groups in the dye molecule maybe a determining factor for the increased photolytic and photocatalytic color removal and degradation rates. A comparative study of two different conductive carbon-black pigments, Vulcan XC-72 R and Printex L6, for the electrogeneration of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) by reducing dissolved oxygen in an alkaline solution was performed. The materials were physically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XRD shows the presence of SO(2) and ATR-FTIR technique indicates a difference in NO and SO(2) functional groups between the two carbon pigments. XPS indicated presence of SO and NO and more oxygenated acid species on Printex L6. A rotating ring-disk electrode was used for electrochemical analysis of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The results showed that the Printex L6 was better than Vulcan XC-72 R for H(2)O(2) production. Results also indicate that the number of electrons transferred in the ORR for Printex L6 and Vulcan XC-72 R were 2.2 and 2.9, respectively, while the percentages of H(2)O(2) formed were 88% and 51%. Scanning electrochemistry microscopy images confirmed the higher amount of H(2)O(2) formed in the Printex L6 pigment. Printex L6 was shown to be a more promising for H(2)O(2) production than Vulcan XC-72 R, while the latter was shown to have more potential for fuel cells. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
