We report on a measurement of the fraction of events with a W or Z boson produced diffractively in antiproton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV, using data from 0.6 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF-II detector equipped with a Roman-pot spectrometer that detects the antiproton (pbar) from pbar+p --> pbar+[X+W/Z]. We find that (0.97 +/- 0.11)% of Ws and (0.85 +/- 0.22)% of Zs are produced diffractively in a region of (anti)proton fractional momentum loss (\xi) of 0.03-1t p+[X+W/Z]+pbar, and on exclusive Z production, pbar+p-->pbar+Z+p. No signal is seen above background for these processes, and comparisons are made with expectations.

We present the first direct measurement of the $W$ production charge asymmetry as a function of the $W$ boson rapidity $\yW$ in $\ppbar$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ $\TeV$. We use a sample of $\wenu$ events in data from 1 $\ifb$ of integrated luminosity collected using the CDF II detector. In the region $|\yW|

We report on the first search for top-quark production via flavor-changing neutral-current (FCNC) interactions in the non-standard-model process u(c)+g -> t using ppbar collision data collected by the CDF II detector. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.2/fb. The candidate events feature the signature of semileptonic top-quark decays and are classified as signal-like or background-like by an artificial neural network trained on simulated events. The observed discriminant distribution is in good agreement with the one predicted by the standard model and provides no evidence for FCNC top-quark production, resulting in a Bayesian upper limit on the production cross section sigma (u(c)+g -> t) u+g) c+g)

We present a search for standard model Higgs boson production in association with a W boson in proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The search employs data collected with the CDF II detector that correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 1.9 inverse fb. We select events consistent with a signature of a single charged lepton, missing transverse energy, and two jets. Jets corresponding to bottom quarks are identified with a secondary vertex tagging method, a jet probability tagging method, and a neural network filter. We use kinematic information in an artificial neural network to improve discrimination between signal and background compared to previous analyses. The observed number of events and the neural network output distributions are consistent with the standard model background expectations, and we set 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross section times branching fraction ranging from 1.2 to 1.1 pb or 7.5 to 102 times the standard model expectation for Higgs boson masses from 110 to $150 GeV/c^2, respectively.

Enchanted by Sources. Henry Biaudet, Liisi Karttunen and Finnish Historical Research in Rome in the Early Twentieth Century This study traces the scholarly endeavours of Henry Biaudet (1870 1915) and Liisi Karttunen (1880 1957) and "La mission historique finlandaise à Rome" which they founded in 1909. They are forgotten in Finnish historiography, but remain internationally renowned for their contribution to the nunciature studies. By investigating their historical work on the Counter- Reformation era, their roles in the scientific communities of Helsinki and Rome as well as the intersection of politics and science in their scholarly practices the study explores the nature of historical research in general at the turn of the twentieth century. The work covers fields such as historiography, university history and the political use of history. Methodologically the research is based on the analysis and contextualization of published and unpublished sources (e.g. correspondences, university records, scholarly publications and reviews in academic journals). Henry Biaudet criticized the previous research on the Nordic Counter-Reformation for its narrow national scope and sources. He sought out a new approach, including the use of sources in archives all over Europe and the inclusion of the Catholic viewpoint. Accordingly, Biaudet and Karttunen searched for records in archives in Southern Europe. Their unorthodox interpretations were denounced in Finland since the picture they gave of late sixteenth-century Sweden was too different from the national narrative. Moreover, Finnish national identity was firmly rooted in Protestantism, and questioning the benevolence of the Reformation and its main actors was considered as an attack not only against historical truth but also national values. The comparison between Biaudet s and Karttunen s arguments and the accepted narrative in Finland shows how traditional interpretations of the Nordic Reformation were influenced by the Lutheran ethos and European anticlerical rhetoric. Historians have recently paid substantial attention to the political use of history, usually focusing on politicized constructions of the national past. This study shows how research that met the criteria of modern historiography also served political purposes. Conducting research in an international community of historians and publishing ambitious scholarly studies that interested an international audience were ways to create a positive image of Finland abroad. These were not uniquely Finnish ideas but rather ideas shared by the international community of historians in Rome. In this context, scientific pursuits were given a clear political meaning. This enhances our understanding of nineteenth-century historiography being firmly rooted between science and politics.

W/Cr codoped Bi4Ti3O12 ceramics, Bi4Ti3-xWxO12+x+0.2 wt%Cr2O3 (BITWC, x=0-0.15), were prepared using a solid-state reaction method. The crystallographic evolution and phase analysis were distinctly determined focusing on the X-ray diffraction peak changes in (020)/(200) and (220)/(1115) diffraction planes, by which the lattice parameters, a, b, and c can be refined. The thermal variations of permittivity, dielectric loss (tan delta), impedance, and electrical conductivity properties were characterized. A decrease in the values of Curie temperature from 675 degrees to 640 degrees C and an increase in the values of the dielectric constant due to an increase of W6+/Cr3+ content were observed. The highest piezoelectric constant, d(33) of 22 pC/N, was achieved with the composition of Bi4Ti2.975W0.025O12.025+0.2 wt% Cr2O3. Also, this composition had a lower electrical conductivity than the other investigated compositions.

Wide-line c.w. proton resonance investigations have been carried out on the ammonium halides, namely, ammonium chloride, ammonium bromide and ammonium iodide in the temperature range between 77 and 300 K and in the pressure range between 1 bar and 14 kbar. It has been found that the narrow iodide spectrum at 77 K broadens under the application of hydrostatic pressure. The barrier height for the ammonium ion motion in ammonium iodide under pressure has been estimated by carrying out a temperature variation study. The rotational potential for the motion of ammonium ion in ammonium iodide at 1 bar and 14 kbar has been calculated using earlier theoretical models and compared with values calculated for ammonium chloride and bromide. The barrier height in the case of ammonium iodide under pressure is found to be of the same order of magnitude as the value obtained in the case of ammonium bromide at atmospheric pressure indicating that the high pressure phase of ammonium iodide is likely to have the same structure as the low temperature ordered CsCl phase found in the case of the chloride and the bromide. The increase in the potential barrier height in the case of ammonium iodide under pressure indicates that the reorientational motion executed by the ammonium ions is inhibited by the application of pressure. This is also confirmed by the broadening of the spectral line at 77 K under the application of pressure.

We present a simplified theoretical formulation of the thermoelectric power (TP) under magnetic quantization in quantum wells (QWs) of nonlinear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated magneto-dispersion law. We consider the anisotropies in the effective electron masses and the spin-orbit constants within the framework of k.p formalism by incorporating the influence of the crystal field splitting. The corresponding results for III-V materials form a special case of our generalized analysis under certain limiting conditions. The TP in QWs of Bismuth, II-VI, IV-VI and stressed materials has been studied by formulating appropriate electron magneto-dispersion laws. We also address the fact that the TP exhibits composite oscillations with a varying quantizing magnetic field in QWs of n-Cd3As2, n-CdGeAs2, n-InSb, p-CdS, stressed InSb, PbTe and Bismuth. This reflects the combined signatures of magnetic and spatial quantizations of the carriers in such structures. The TP also decreases with increasing electron statistics and under the condition of non-degeneracy, all the results as derived in this paper get transformed into the well-known classical equation of TP and thus confirming the compatibility test. We have also suggested an experimental method of determining the elastic constants in such systems with arbitrary carrier energy spectra from the known value of the TP. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The phase diagram of the Ni-W-O system at 1200 K was established by metallographic and X-ray identification of the phases present after equilibration at controlled oxygen potentials. The oxygen partial pressures over the samples were fixed by metered streams of CO+CO2 gas mixtures. There was only one ternary oxide, nickel tungstate (NiWO4), in the Ni-W-O system at a total pressure of 1 atm, and this compound decomposed to a mixture of Ni+WO2.72 on lowering the oxygen potential. The Gibbs' free energy of formation of NiWO4 was determined from the measurement of the e.m.f. of the solid oxide galvanic cell, Pt, Ni+NiWO4+WO2.72/CaO-ZrO2/Ni+NiO, Pt and thermodynamic properties of tungsten and nickel oxides available in the literature. For the reaction, NiO(s)+WO3(s)rarrNiWO4(s) DeltaG°=–10500–0.708 T (±250) cal mol–1.
