Functional MRI (fMRI) data often have low signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) and are contaminated by strong interference from other physiological sources. A promising tool for extracting signals, even under low SNR conditions, is blind source separation (BSS), or independent component analysis (ICA). BSS is based on the assumption that the detected signals are a mixture of a number of independent source signals that are linearly combined via an unknown mixing matrix. BSS seeks to determine the mixing matrix to recover the source signals based on principles of statistical independence. In most cases, extraction of all sources is unnecessary; instead, a priori information can be applied to extract only the signal of interest. Herein we propose an algorithm based on a variation of ICA, called Dependent Component Analysis (DCA), where the signal of interest is extracted using a time delay obtained from an autocorrelation analysis. We applied such method to inspect functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data, aiming to find the hemodynamic response that follows neuronal activation from an auditory stimulation, in human subjects. The method localized a significant signal modulation in cortical regions corresponding to the primary auditory cortex. The results obtained by DCA were also compared to those of the General Linear Model (GLM), which is the most widely used method to analyze fMRI datasets.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of 2 levels of raw milk somatic cell count (SCC) on the composition of Prato cheese and on the microbiological and sensory changes of Prato cheese throughout ripening. Two groups of dairy cows were selected to obtain low-SCC (<200,000 cells/mL) and high-SCC (>700,000 cells/mL) milks, which were used to manufacture 2 vats of cheese. The pasteurized milk was evaluated according to the pH, total solids, fat, total protein, lactose, standard plate count, coliforms at 45 degrees C, and Salmonella spp. The cheese composition was evaluated 2 d after manufacture. Lactic acid bacteria, psychrotrophic bacteria, and yeast and mold counts were carried out after 3, 9, 16, 32, and 51 d of storage. Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and coagulase-positive Staphylococcus counts were carried out after 3, 32, and 51 d of storage. A 2 x 5 factorial design with 4 replications was performed. Sensory evaluation of the cheeses from low- and high-SCC milks was carried out for overall acceptance by using a 9-point hedonic scale after 8, 22, 35, 50, and 63 d of storage. The somatic cell levels used did not affect the total protein and salt: moisture contents of the cheeses. The pH and moisture content were higher and the clotting time was longer for cheeses from high-SCC milk. Both cheeses presented the absence of Salmonella spp. and L. monocytogenes, and the coagulase-positive Staphylococcus count was below 1 x 10(2) cfu/g throughout the storage time. The lactic acid bacteria count decreased significantly during the storage time for the cheeses from both low- and high-SCC milks, but at a faster rate for the cheese from high-SCC milk. Cheeses from high-SCC milk presented lower psychrotrophic bacteria counts and higher yeast and mold counts than cheeses from low- SCC milk. Cheeses from low- SCC milk showed better overall acceptance by the consumers. The lower overall acceptance of the cheeses from high-SCC milk may be associated with texture and flavor defects, probably caused by the higher proteolysis of these cheeses.

The objective was to evaluate the effect of beta-lactoglobulin (beta-lg) polymorphism and seasonality on milk composition (fat, lactose, total solids, milk urea nitrogen, total protein, true protein, casein and somatic cell counts) of Holstein and Girolando cows. Milk and blood samples from 278 Holsteins cows and 156 Girolando cows were taken during two dry seasons and two rainy seasons, for milk composition analysis and to determine beta-lg genotypes, respectively. BB genotype was the most frequent for both breeds, followed by AA genotype for Holstein (BB>AA>AB) and by AB for Girolando cows (BB>AB>AA). No differences were found in milk compositional characteristics among genetic variants of beta-lg (AA, AB and BB) either between Holstein or Girolando cows. No association between milk composition and beta-lg genetic polymorphism was observed. During the dry season, independently of the breed considered, higher contents of lactose, true protein, casein and casein :true protein ratio were found.

This work provides experimental phase diagram of mitotane, a drug used in the chemotherapy treatment of adrenocortical carcinoma, in compressed and/or supercritical CO(2). The synthetic-static method in a high-pressure variable-volume view cell coupled with a transmitted-light intensity probe was used to measure the solid-fluid (SF) equilibrium data. The phase equilibrium experiments were determined in temperature ranging from (298.2 to 333.1) K and pressure up to 22 MPa. Peng-Robinson equation of state (PR-EoS) with classical mixing rule was used to correlate the experimental data. Excellent agreement was found between experimental and calculated values. There has been no comparison of fluoride (F) intake by pre-school children receiving more traditional sources of systemic F. The aim of this study was to estimate the dietary F intake by children receiving F from artificially fluoridated water (AFW-Brazil, 0.6-0.8 mg F/L), naturally fluoridated water (NFW-Brazil, 0.6-0.9 mg F/L), fluoridated salt (FS-Peru, 180-200 mg F/Kg), and fluoridated milk (FM-Peru, 0.25 mg F). Children (n = 21-26) aged 4-6 yrs old participated in each community. A non-fluoridated community (NoF) was evaluated as the control population. Dietary F intake was monitored by the ""duplicate plate"" method, with different constituents (water, other beverages, and solids). F was analyzed with an ion-selective electrode. Data were tested by Kruskall-Wallis and Dunn`s tests (p < 0.05). Mean (+/- SD) F intake (mg/Kg b.w./day) was 0.04 +/- 0.01(b), 0.06 +/- 0.02(a,b), 0.05 +/- 0.02(a,b), 0.06 +/- 0.01(a), and 0.01 +/- 0.00(c) for AFW/NFW/FS/FM/NoF, respectively. The main dietary contributors for AFW/NFW and FS/FM/NoF were water and solids, respectively. The results indicate that the dietary F intake must be considered before a systemic method of fluoridation is implemented.

Objective. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pH and calcium ion release of 6 materials used for root-end filling and perforation repair. Study design. Gray ProRoot MTA, gray MTA-Angelus, white MTA-Angelus, and CPM were compared to 2 experimental ones: MTA-exp, also based in Portland cement with a modified mixing liquid, and MBPc, an epoxy-resin based cement containing calcium hydroxide. After 3, 24, 72, and 168 hours the water in which each sample had been immersed was tested to determine the ph and calcium ion release. Results. All the analyzed materials showed alkaline pH and capacity to release calcium ions; however, a tendency of reduction of these characteristics was noted for all the analyzed materials, except for the MBPc, which showed a slight increase of pH among the 3 initial periods. Conclusion. The results suggest that all materials investigated presented alkaline pH and ability of release of calcium ions. (Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol Endod 2009; 108: 135-139)

For a two layered long wave propagation, linearized governing equations, which were derived earlier from the Euler equations of mass and momentum assuming negligible friction and interfacial mixing are solved analytically using Fourier transform. For the solution, variations of upper layer water level is assumed to be sinosoidal having known amplitude and variations of interface level is solved. As the governing equations are too complex to solve it analytically, density of upper layer fluid is assumed as very close to the density of lower layer fluid to simplify the lower layer equation. A numerical model is developed using the staggered leap-forg scheme for computation of water level and discharge in one dimensional propagation having known amplitude for the variations of upper layer water level and interface level to be solved. For the numerical model, water levels (upper layer and interface) at both the boundaries are assumed to be known from analytical solution. Results of numerical model are verified by comparing with the analytical solutions for different time period. Good agreements between analytical solution and numerical model are found for the stated boundary condition. The reliability of the developed numerical model is discussed, using it for different a (ratio of density of fluid in the upper layer to that in the lower layer) and p (ratio of water depth in the lower layer to that in the upper layer) values. It is found that as ‘CX’ increases amplification of interface also increases for same upper layer amplitude. Again for a constant lower layer depth, as ‘p’ increases amplification of interface. also increases for same upper layer amplitude.

Objectives: This study examined the retention of solvents within experimental HEMA/solvent primers after two conditions for solvent evaporation: from a free surface or from dentine surface. Methods: Experimental primers were prepared by mixing 35% HEMA with 65% water, methanol, ethanol or acetone (v/v). Aliquots of each primer (50 mu l) were placed on glass wells or they were applied to the surface of acid-etched dentine cubes (2 mm x 2 mm x 2 mm) (n = 5). For both conditions (i.e. from free surface or dentine cubes), change in primers mass due to solvent evaporation was gravimetrically measured for 10 min at 51% RH and 21 degrees C. The rate of solvent evaporation was calculated as a function of loss of primers mass (%) over time. Data were analysed by two-way ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls (p < 0.05). Results: There were significant differences between solvent retention(%) and evaporation rate (%/min) depending on the solvent present in the primer and the condition for evaporation (from free surface or dentine cubes) (p < 0.05). For both conditions, the greatest amount of retained solvent was observed for HEMA/water primer. The rate of solvent evaporation for HEMA/acetone primer was almost 2- to 10-times higher than for HEMA/water primer depending whether evaporation occurred, respectively, from a free surface or dentine cubes. The rate of solvent evaporation varied with time, being in general highest at the earliest periods. Conclusions: The rate of solvent evaporation and its retention into HEMA/solvent primers was influenced by the type of the solvent and condition allowed for their evaporation. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of this study was to determine whether para-chloroaniline (PCA) and/or reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated by chlorhexidine (CHX) alone or after CHX is mixed with calcium hydroxide at different time points. Mass spectrometry was performed to detect PCA in samples of 0.2% CHX and Ca(OH)2 mixed with 0.2% CHX. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to confirm the presence of CHX in the mixture with Ca(OH)2. The samples were analyzed immediately after mixing and after 7 and 14 days. During the intervals of the experiment, the samples were maintained at 36.5 degrees C and 95% relative humidity. PCA was detected in the 0.2% CHX solution after 14 days. The mixture of CHX with Ca(CH)2 liberated ROS at all time points, but no traces of CHX were present in the mixture as a result of immediate degradation of the CHX. (J Endod 2008;34:1508-1514)

Shock-tunnel experiments have been performed to measure the effect on skin-friction drag in a supersonic combustor of flow disturbances induced by hydrogen fuel injection transverse to the airstream. Constant-area, circular cross section combustors of lengths varying up to 0.52 m were employed. The experiments were done at a stagnation enthalpy of 7.2 MJ . kg(-1) and a Mach number of 4.3, with a boundary layer that was turbulent downstream of the 0.14-m station in the combustors. Combustor skin-friction drag was measured by a method based on the stress wave force balance, the method being validated by agreement between fuel-off skin-friction drag measurements and predictions using existing skin-friction theories. When fuel was injected, it was found that the drag remained at fuel-off values. Thus, the streamwise vortices and other flow disturbances induced by the fuel injection, mixing, and combustion, which are expected to be present in a scramjet combustor, did not influence the skin-friction drag of the combustors.

Trace element concentrations and combined Sr- and Nd-isotope compositions were determined on stromatolitic carbonates (microbialites) from the 2.52 Ga Campbellrand carbonate platform (South Africa). Shale-normalised rare earth element and yttrium patterns of the ancient samples are similar to those of modern seawater in having positive La and Y anomalies and in being depleted in light rare earth elements. In contrast to modem seawater (and microbialite proxies), the 2.52 Ga samples lack a negative Ce anomaly but possess a positive Eu anomaly. These latter trace element characteristics are interpreted to reflect anoxic deep ocean waters where, unlike today, hydrothermal Fe input was not oxidised, and scavenged and rare earth elements were not coprecipitated with Fe-oxyhydroxides. The persistence of a positive Eu anomaly in relatively shallow Campbellrand platform waters indicates a dramatic reversal from hydrothermally dominated (Archaean) to continental erosion-dominated (Phanerozoic) rare earth element flux ratio. The dominant hydrothermal input is also expressed in the initial Sr- and Nd-isotope ratios. There is collinear variation in Sr-Nd systematics, which range from primitive values (Sr-87/Sr-86 of 0.702386 and epsilon (Nd) of +2.1) to more evolved crustal ratios. Mixing calculations show that the range in trace element ratios (e.g., Y/Ho) and initial isotope ratios is not a result of contamination by trapped sediment, but that the chemical band isotopic variation reflects carbonate deposition in an environment where different water masses mixed. Calculated Nd flux ratios yield a hydrothermal input into the 2.52 Ga oceans one order of magnitude larger than continental input. Such a change in flux ratio most likely required substantially reduced continental inputs, which could, in turn, reflect a plate tectonic causation (e.g., reduced topography or expansion of epicontinental seas). This article modifies the usual form of the Dubinin-Radushkevich pore-filling model for application to liquid-phase adsorption data, where large molecules are often involved. In such cases it is necessary to include the repulsive part of the energy in the micropores, which is accomplished here by relating the pore potential to the fluid-solid interaction potential. The model also considers the nonideality of the bulk liquid phase through the UNIFAC activity coefficient model, as well as structural heterogeneity of the carbon. For the latter the generalized adsorption integral is used while incorporating the pore-size distribution obtained by density functional theory analysis of argon adsorption data. The model is applied here to the interpretation of aqueous phase adsorption isotherms of three different esters on three commercial activated carbons. Excellent agreement between the model and experimental data is observed, and the fitted Lennard-Jones size parameter for the adsorbate-adsorbate interactions compares well with that estimated from known critical properties, supporting the modified approach. On the other hand, the model without consideration of bulk nonideality, or when using classical models of the characteristic energy, gives much poorer bts of the data and unrealistic parameter values.

The characterization of three commercial activated carbons was carried out using the adsorption of various compounds in the aqueous phase. For this purpose the generalized adsorption isotherm was employed, and a modification of the Dubinin-Radushkevich pore filling model, incorporating repulsive contributions to the pore potential as well as bulk liquid phase nonideality, was used as the local isotherm. Eight different flavor compounds were used as adsorbates, and the isotherms were jointly fitted to yield a common pore size distribution for each carbon. The bulk liquid phase nonideality was incorporated through the UNIFAC activity coefficient model, and the repulsive contribution to the pore potential was incorporated through the Steele 10-4-3 potential model. The mean micropore network coordination number for each carbon was also determined from the fitted saturation capacity based on percolation theory. Good agreement between the model and the experimental data was observed. In addition, excellent agreement between the bimodal gamma pore size distribution and density functional theory-cum-regularization-based pore size distribution obtained by argon adsorption was also observed, supporting the validity of the model. The results show that liquid phase adsorption, using adsorptive molecules of different sizes, can be an effective means of characterizing the pore size distribution as well as connectivity. Alternately, if the carbon pore size distribution is independently known, the method can be used to measure critical molecular sizes. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science.

Composite clay nanostructures (CCNs) were observed in intercalating Laponite clay with alumina in the presence of alkyl polyether surfactants which contain hydrophobic alkyl chains and ether groups. Such nanostructured clays are highly porous solids consisting of randomly orientated clay platelets intercalated with alumina nanoparticles. The pores in the product solids are larger than the dimension of the surfactant molecules, ranging from 2 to 10 nm. This suggests that the micelles of the surfactant molecules, rather than the molecules, act as templates in the synthesis. Interestingly, it is found that the size of the framework pores was directly proportional to the amount of the surfactants in terms of moles, but shows no evident dependence on the size of the surfactant molecules. Broad pore size distributions were observed for the product CCNs. This study demonstrates that introducing surfactants in the pillaring process of clays is a powerful strategy for tailoring the pore structures of nanoporous clays. With this new technique, it is possible to design and engineer such composite clay nanostructures with desired pore and surface properties by the proper choice of surfactant amounts and preparation conditions.

Titania sol-pillared clay (TiO2 PILC) and silica-titania sol-pillared clay (SiO2-TiO2 PILC) were synthesized by the sol-gel method. Supercritical drying (SCD) and treatment with quaternary ammonium surfactants were used to tailor the pore structure of the resulting clay. It was found that SCD approach increased the external surface area of the PILCs dramatically and that treatment with surfactants could be used to tailor pore size because the mesopore formation in the galleries between the clay layers follows the templating mechanism as observed in the synthesis of MCM-41 materials. Highly mesoporous solids were thus obtained. In calcined TiO2 PILC, ultrafine crystallites in anatase phase, which are active for photocatalytic oxidation of organics, were observed. In SiO2-TiO2 PILCs and their derivatives, titanium was highly dispersed in the matrix of silica and no crystal phase was observed. The highly dispersed titanium sites are good catalytic centers for selective oxidation of organic compounds. (C) 2001 Academic Press.
