A new approach is proposed to simulate splash erosion on local soil surfaces. Without the effect of wind and other raindrops, the impact of free-falling raindrops was considered as an independent event from the stochastic viewpoint. The erosivity of a single raindrop depending on its kinetic energy was computed by an empirical relationship in which the kinetic energy was expressed as a power function of the equivalent diameter of the raindrop. An empirical linear function combining the kinetic energy and soil shear strength was used to estimate the impacted amount of soil particles by a single raindrop. Considering an ideal local soil surface with size of I m x I m, the expected number of received free-failing raindrops with different diameters per unit time was described by the combination of the raindrop size distribution function and the terminal velocity of raindrops. The total splash amount was seen as the sum of the impact amount by all raindrops in the rainfall event. The total splash amount per unit time was subdivided into three different components, including net splash amount, single impact amount and re-detachment amount. The re-detachment amount was obtained by a spatial geometric probability derived using the Poisson function in which overlapped impacted areas were considered. The net splash amount was defined as the mass of soil particles collected outside the splash dish. It was estimated by another spatial geometric probability in which the average splashed distance related to the median grain size of soil and effects of other impacted soil particles and other free-falling raindrops were considered. Splash experiments in artificial rainfall were carried out to validate the availability and accuracy of the model. Our simulated results suggested that the net splash amount and re-detachment amount were small parts of the total splash amount. Their proportions were 0.15% and 2.6%, respectively. The comparison of simulated data with measured data showed that this model could be applied to simulate the soil-splash process successfully and needed information of the rainfall intensity and original soil properties including initial bulk intensity, water content, median grain size and some empirical constants related to the soil surface shear strength, the raindrop size distribution function and the average splashed distance. The novel phase field model with the "polymer characteristic" was established based on a nonconserved spatiotemporal Ginzburg-Landau equation (TDGL model A). Especially, we relate the diffusion equation with the crystal growth faces of polymer single crystals. Namely, the diffusion equations are discretized according to the diffusion coefficient of every lattice site in various crystal growth faces and the shape of lattice is selected based on the real proportion of the unit cell dimensions.

The natural occurrence of the human telomeric G-quadruplex or i-motif in vivo has not been demonstrated and the biological effects of the induction of these structures need to be clarified. Intracellular environments are highly crowded with various biomolecules and in vitro studies under molecular-crowding conditions will provide important information on how biomolecules behave in cells. Here we report that cell-mimic crowding can increase i-motif stability at acid pH and cause dehydration.

Cyclin A(2) plays critical role in DNA replication, transcription, and cell cycle regulation. Its overexpression has been detected and related to many types of cancers including leukemia, suggesting that suppression of cyclin A(2) would be an attractive strategy to prevent tumor progression. Herein, we apply functionalized single wall carbon nanotubes (f-SWNTs) to carry small interfering RNA (siRNA) into K562 cells and determine whether inhibition of cyclin A(2) would be a potential therapeutic target for chronic myelogenous leukemia.

Single-crystal-like organic heterojunction films of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and copper-hexadecafluoro-phthalocyanine (F16CuPc) were fabricated by weak-epitaxy-growth method. The intrinsic properties of organic heterojunction were revealed through threshold voltage shift of field-effect transistors and measurement of single-crystal-like diodes. At both sides of the heterojunction interface 40 nm thick charge accumulation layers formed, which showed that the long carriers' diffusion length is due to the high crystallinity and low density of deep bulk traps of single-crystal-like films.

Na+-K+ ATPases have been observed and located by in situ AFM and single molecule recognition technique, topography and recognition imaging (TREC) that is a unique technique to specifically identify single protein in complex during AFM imaging. Na+-K+ ATPases were well distributed in the inner leaflet of cell membranes with about 10% aggregations in total recognized proteins. The height of Na+-K+ ATPases measured by AFM is in the range of 12-14 nm, which is very consistent with the cryoelectron microscopy result. The unbinding force between Na+-K+ ATPases in the membrane and anti-ATPases on the AFM tip is about 80 pN with the apparent loading rate at 40 nN/s.

The PtRu/C electrocatalyst with high loading (PtRu of 60 wt%) was prepared by synergetic effect of ultrasonic radiation and mechanical stirring. Physicochemical characterizations show that the size of PtRu particles of as-prepared PtRu/C catalyst is only several nanometers (2-4 nm), and the PtRu nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed on carbon surface. Electrochemistry and single passive direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) tests indicate that the as-prepared PtRu/C electrocatalyst possessed larger electrochemical active surface (EAS) area and enhanced electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). The enhancement could be attributed to the synergetic effect of ultrasound radiation and mechanical stirring, which can avoid excess concentration of partial solution and provide a uniform environment for the nucleation and growth of metal particles simultaneously hindering the agglomeration of PtRu particles on carbon surface.

The increasing worldwide demand for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and increasing concern regarding how to safely develop and use CNTs are requiring a low-cost, simple, and highly sensitive CNT detection assay for toxicological evaluation and environmental monitoring. However, this goal is still far from being achieved. All the current CNT detection techniques are not, applicable for automation and field analysis because they are dependent on highly expensive special instruments and complicated sample preparation. On the basis of the capability of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) to specifically induce human telomeric i-motif formation, we design an electrochemical DNA (E-DNA) sensor that can distinguish single- and multiwalled carbon nanotubes both in buffer and in cell extracts. The E-DNA sensor can selectively detect SWNTs; with a direct detection limit of 0.2 ppm and has been demonstrated in cancer cell extracts. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a biosensing technique that can distinguish different types of nanotubes. Our work will provide new insights into how to design a biosensor for detection of carbon nanotubes.

Nanowires of SiC were synthesized by carbothermally reducing PVP/TEOS composite fibres obtained by electrospinning. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) indicated that the SiC nanowires are single crystalline in nature. Both Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy and HRTEM indicated that a thin layer of SiO2 was formed on the outer surface of the nanowire as a result of post-heat treatment for the removal of residual carbon. Such SiO2 layer protects the inner SiC fibre from further oxidation. The formation mechanism of single-crystalline SiC nanowires was proposed based on our understanding and characterizations. The growth of the nanowire is believed to be along the ( 111) of its cubic cell.

The extraction and stripping kinetics of yttrium(III) with bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272, HA) dissolved in heptane as an acid extractant have been investigated by constant interfacial cell with laminar flow. The experimental hydrodynamic conditions have been chosen so that the contribution of diffusion to the measured rate of reaction is minimized. The plot of interfacial area on the rate has shown a linear relationship, which makes the interface the most probable local for the chemical reactions. At the same time, the extraction thermodynamic and kinetic methods are compared to determine the equilibrium extraction constant. A rate equation and the rate-determining step of the extraction and stripping of yttrium(III) have also been obtained, respectively.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were covalently functionalized with biocompatible poly-L-lysine, which is useful in promoting cell adhesion. SWNTs played an important role as connectors to assemble these active amino groups of poly-L-lysine, which provided a relative "friendly" and "soft" environment for further derivation, such as attaching bioactive molecules. As an application example, by further linking peroxidase, an amplified biosensing toward H2O2 concerning this assembly was investigated.

A new orthorhombic phase of BaEu2Mn2O7 with the space group of Ccmm (no.63) was identified for single crystals after heat treatment and its Crystal Structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffractometry. The volume Of the unit cell has twice the fundamental tetragonal cell and corner-shared MnO6 octahedra are slightly distorted and Mn-O-Mn angle between the neighboring octahedra tilts with an angle by around 3 degrees from b-axis. It is concluded from the results of the heat treatment of single crystals at various temperatures that this orthorhombic phase changes into a tetragonal One With superstructure (P4(2)/mnm) at 402 K and changes once more into the fundamental tetragonal phase (I4/mmm) above 552 K. The tetragonal phase with superstructure which has been expected to be an unstable one is stable between the two temperatures.

A new bimetallic cluster complex with the formula [{Co(phen)(2)}(2)V4O12](H2O)-H-. was synthesized from the hydrothermal reaction of V2O5, H2C2O4, Co(NO3)(2), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), (C4H9)(4)NOH and water. The compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic system with space group Pbcn and unit cell parameters a = 19.106(3) Angstrom, b = 15.250(3) Angstrom, c = 16.321(2) Angstrom, V = 4755.4(13) Angstrom(3), Z = 4 and R = 0.0318. The bimetallic cluster complex [{Co(phen)(2)}(2)V4O12](H2O)-H-. is composed of a discrete V4O124- cluster eovalently attached to two [Co(phen)(2)](2+) fragments and the discrete hexanuclear bimetallic clusters of [{Co(phen)(2)}(V4O12)-V-2](H2O)-H-. are further extended into interesting three-dimensional supermolecular arrays via pi-pi stacking interactions of phen groups. Other characterizations by elemental analysis, IR, and thermal analysis are also described.

The structures of single crystals of syndiotactic poly(butene-1) in form I, produced by thin-film growth, are studied by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. Bright-field electron microscopy observation shows that the single crystal exhibits a regular rectangular shape with the long axis along its crystallographic b-axis. Electron diffraction results indicate an isochiral C-centered packing of a-fold helical chains in an orthorhombic unit cell corresponding to the C222(1) space group, according to the model proposed in the literature. The differences with the polymorphic behavior of syndiotactic polypropylene concerning the formation and the stability of the isochiral mode of packing are outlined.

The possibility of determining the rate constant of a catalytic reaction using a parallel incident spectroelectrochemical cell was investigated in this work. Various spectroelectrochemical techniques were examined, including single-potential-step chronoabsorptometry, single-potential-step open-circuit relaxation chronoabsorptometry and double-potential-step chronoabsorptometry. The values determined for the kinetics of the ferrocyanide-ascorbic acid system are in agreement with the reported values. The parallel incident method is much more sensitive than the normal transmission method and can be applied to systems which have smaller molar absorptivities, larger rate constants or lower concentrations.
