Space is certainly one of the most important basic narrative categories to be considered when studying different fictional media formats; it encompasses a range of rich attributes. While we perceive the preference cinema gives to this narrative category by the fact that the Seventh Art is known as the “art of space”, the occurrence of digital media makes us realize that space has to be explored virtually, providing the interacting person with the feeling that he, too, has room in the fictional world.

The purpose of this article is to comment on the film adaptation by director Stephen Frears of the 18th-century novel Les liaisons dangereuses (in English, Dangerous Liaisons) by Choderlos de Laclos. It compares the film composition to the basic formal aspects of the novel. If, on one hand, Frears’ 1988 film adaptation breaks away from Laclos’ epistolary novel for being aligned with the standard elements of the classical cinema, on the other, it reveals a surprising affinity to the literary work: the relation with the theatrical language.

Despite the theoretical advances that have discredited the notion of “faithfulness” regarding the adaptation as an intermediatic phenomenon, it still insists on coming up. Capitu, a mini-series shown by the Rede Globo network has been regarded as “unfaithful” to the novel Dom Casmurro. It is a perfect example for this article of the perception of the audiovisual language resources that work as valid analogies to Machado de Assis’ novel, indicating the misconception that underlies the notion of “faithfulness”.

The purpose of this essay is to briefly evaluate the relationship that exists between media and literature in a general approach. The referred cases are exemplary in character. We suggest that there are essentially three ways by which medialiterature relationships come about. The classification provided herein seeks to contribute towards more detailed studies on this matter and invites to reflection.

The purpose of this article is to assess Federico Fellini’s adaptation of an Edgar Allan Poe story for the screen. The film “Spirits of the Dead” is Fellini’s adaptation of Poe’s story “Never Bet the Devil your Head”, but it is very far from being a faithful rendering. The “infidelity” of the Italian film director to the American writer occurred in the context of the enormous prestige enjoyed by what was known as “authorism”, a phase which the film industry was going through at the end of the 1960s, whereby great value was placed on the aesthetic idiosyncrasies of individual film directors.

This work intends to analyze the industrial policy strategies adopted by Brazil after economic liberalization. Initially will be compared the different views around the problem: the liberal model, which advocates less state involvement and horizontal policies, and the model that advocates active industrial policies with participation of the state and that are based on the South Korean model. The South Korean experience will be analyzed, especially for evaluation of consistency between objectives and instruments. Will be analyzed also the liberal strategies implemented by Brazil during the 1990s, and finally, the policies adopted after 2003, highlighting objectives, instruments and results by 2014

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the consistency, coherence, and interobserver reliability of the Portuguese version of the Scandinavian Stroke Scale (SSS) in a multicultural population of stroke. Methods: The SSS was translated, culturally adapted, and applied by two independent investigators. This was a randomized transverse study involving two groups: group 1 included 20 patients in the acute phase and group 2 included 20 patients in the subacute phase after stroke was confirmed by computed tomography with a pre-stroke modified Rankin Scale score of 0. Each patient also underwent National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) evaluation at hospital entry and at the time of the SSS evaluation for correlation with our current standard hospital practice. Consistency and coherence were analyzed by Cronbach’s α and interobserver reliability by ĸ. Results: Forty patients were evaluated with 0.88 consistency and coherence in both stroke phases. Mean interobserver ĸ was 0.76, with reliability considered excellent and good for most scale items, and moderate for only the facial palsy item. Conclusion: The SSS is adequate and validated to study post-stroke patients in a multicultural Brazilian population and in the Portuguese language.

Here we embark in a deep metagenomic survey that revealed the taxonomic and potential metabolic pathways aspects of mangrove sediment microbiology. The extraction of DNA from sediment samples and the direct application of pyrosequencing resulted in approximately 215 Mb of data from four distinct mangrove areas (BrMgv01 to 04) in Brazil. The taxonomic approaches applied revealed the dominance of Deltaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria in the samples. Paired statistical analysis showed higher proportions of specific taxonomic groups in each dataset. The metabolic reconstruction indicated the possible occurrence of processes modulated by the prevailing conditions found in mangrove sediments. In terms of carbon cycling, the sequences indicated the prevalence of genes involved in the metabolism of methane, formaldehyde, and carbon dioxide. With respect to the nitrogen cycle, evidence for sequences associated with dissimilatory reduction of nitrate, nitrogen immobilization, and denitrification was detected. Sequences related to the production of adenylsulfate, sulfite, and H2S were relevant to the sulphur cycle. These data indicate that the microbial core involved in methane, nitrogen, and sulphur metabolism consists mainly of Burkholderiaceae, Planctomycetaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Desulfobacteraceae. Comparison of our data to datasets from soil and sea samples resulted in the allotment of the mangrove sediments between those samples. The results of this study add valuable data about the composition of microbial communities in mangroves and also shed light on possible transformations promoted by microbial organisms in mangrove sediments.

In this work we extend the first order formalism for cosmological models that present an interaction between a fermionic and a scalar field. Cosmological exact solutions describing universes filled with interacting dark energy and dark matter have been obtained. Viable cosmological solutions with an early period of decelerated expansion followed by late acceleration have been found, notably one which presents a dark matter component dominating in the past and a dark energy component dominating in the future. In another one, the dark energy alone is the responsible for both periods, similar to a Chaplygin gas case. Exclusively accelerating solutions have also been obtained.

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnea is frequent during the acute phase of stroke, and it is associated with poorer outcomes. A well-established relationship between supine sleep and obstructive sleep apnea severity exists in non-stroke patients. This study investigated the frequency of supine sleep and positional obstructive sleep apnea in patients with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. METHODS: Patients who suffered their first acute stroke, either ischemic or hemorrhagic, were subjected to a full polysomnography, including the continuous monitoring of sleep positions, during the first night after symptom onset. Obstructive sleep apnea severity was measured using the apnea-hypopnea index, and the NIHSS measured stroke severity. RESULTS: We prospectively studied 66 stroke patients. The mean age was 57.6+/-11.5 years, and the mean body mass index was 26.5+/-4.9. Obstructive sleep apnea (apnea-hypopnea index >= 5) was present in 78.8% of patients, and the mean apnea-hypopnea index was 29.7+/-26.6. The majority of subjects (66.7%) spent the entire sleep time in a supine position, and positional obstructive sleep apnea was clearly present in the other 23.1% of cases. A positive correlation was observed between the NIHSS and sleep time in the supine position (r(s) = 0.5; p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Prolonged supine positioning during sleep was highly frequent after stroke, and it was related to stroke severity. Positional sleep apnea was observed in one quarter of stroke patients, which was likely underestimated during the acute phase of stroke. The adequate positioning of patients during sleep during the acute phase of stroke may decrease obstructive respiratory events, regardless of the stroke subtype.
