The effect of nickel from soluble NiCl2 on Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, as well as on rate of nitro blue tetrazolium reduction, was studied in vitro since lipid peroxidation has been implicated in cell damage by nickel insoluble compounds, whose toxicity and carcinogenicity are well established. The physical and chemical nature of nickel compounds is one of the key determinations of its toxicity. Soluble nickel freely enter cells, but is just as readily excreted reducing the opportunity for production of lipid damage. Nickel from NiCl2 strongly activated SOD activity. In vitro addition of nickel chloride to a crude lung preparation altered the KM for SOD without changing the Vmax. Nickel chloride produced increased enzyme affinity to the substrate, because decreased (O2-) concentration that yields half-maximal velocity. The combination of nickel and SOD may contribute to stabilization of the particular conformation of SOD responsible for maximal catalytically activity.

The role of air pollution as a health risk factor is of special interest. Numerous toxic pollutants, such as nickel, are being released to the environment as a result of combustion of fossil fuels, crude oil, and coal. Nickel in the atmosphere can be combined with other environmental pollutants, producing various nickel compounds, which have varying animal toxicity. A rat biossay validated for the identification of toxic effects of nickel revealed increased serum activities of total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alanine transaminase (ALT) in rats that received intratracheal injection of Ni2+ in .09% saline solution of NiCl2. The total LDH activity was also increased in the heart, and the isoenzyme pattern showed the LDH1/LDH2 ratio elevated to greater than 1. We conclude that intratracheal administration of nickel induced cardiac and hepatic damage. The development of cardiac and hepatic damage and of increased enzymes' activities was only demonstrated when nickel had accumulated in these tissues, indicating that nickel depot is essential to its toxicity. Intratracheal administration of NiCl2 induced changes in LDH and ALT activities.

Nickel compounds have high potential risk for the health of populations and for this reason their toxic effects should be urgently established. To determine the effect of nickel monosulfide in the muscle at the injection site on pancreatic, hepatic, and osteogenic lesions and the potential therapeutic effect of Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD), male Wistar rats received single intramuscular injections of nickel monosulfide (NiS - 7 mg Ni2+/Kg). A group of these experimental rats were injected intraperitoneally, with a single weekly dose of SOD covalently linked to polyethylene glycol (SOD-PEG). Rats were sacrificed at 2, 4, 6, and 8 months after Ni2+ injection. Nickel monosulfide produced tumors at the injection site. The increased phospholipid, alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and amylase levels in serum, in absence of SOD-PEG, reflected the toxic effects on pancreatic, hepatic, and osteogenic tissues of rats. SOD activity was increased in serum of rats receiving SOD-PEG throughout the experiment, and no significant difference was observed in biochemical parameters of control and experimental rats in presence of SOD- PEG. Superoxide radical generated by Ni2+ is of primary importance in the development of tumors at the injection site. Superoxide anion (O2 -) is also an important toxic intermediate with respect to hepatic, pancreatic, and osteogenic injury, since SOD-PEG has a potential therapeutic effect.

In the study of physical, chemical, and mineralogical data related to the weathering of soils and the quantification of their properties, remote sensing constitutes an important technique that, in addition to conventional analyses, can contribute to soil survey. The objectives of this research were to characterize and differentiate soils developed from basaltic rocks that occur in the Parana state, Brazil and to quantify soil properties based on their spectral reflectance. These observations were used to verify the relationship between the soils and reflectance with regard to weathering, organic matter (OM), and forms of Fe. From the least to the most weathered soil, we used a Typic Argiudoll (Reddish Brunizem), Rhodudalf (Terra Roxa Estruturada), and Rhodic Hapludox (Very Dark Red Latosol). The spectral reflectances between 400 and 2500 nm were obtained in the laboratory from soil samples collected at two depth increments, 0- to 20- and 40- to 60-cm, using an Infra Red Intelligent Spectroradiometer (IRIS). Correlation, regression, and discriminant estimates were used in analyzing the soil and spectral data. Results of this study indicated that soils could be separated at the soil-type level based on reflectance intensity in various absorption bands. Soil collected in the 40- to 60-cm depth appeared to have higher reflectance intensities than those from the 0- to 20-cm depth. Removal of OM from soil samples promoted higher reflectance intensity in the entire spectrum. Amorphous and crystalline Fe influenced reflectance differently. Weathering of basaltic soils was correlated with alterations in the reflectance intensities and absorption features of the spectral curves. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that this technique was efficient in the estimation of clay, silt, kaolinite, crystalline Fe, amorphous Fe, and Mg through the use of reflected energy of the soils.

The magnetic and structural properties of sol-gel derived organic/inorganic nanocomposites doped with Fe(II), Fe(III), Nd(III) and Eu (III) ions are discussed. These hybrids consist of poly(oxyethylene)-based chains grafted onto siloxane nanodomains by urea cross-linkages. Small angle X-ray scattering data show the presence of spatial correlations of siloxane domains embedded in the polymer matrix. The magnetic properties of rare-earth doped samples are determined by single ion crystal-field-splitted levels (Eu3+ J=0; Nd3+ J=9/2) and the small thermal irreversibility is mainly associated to structural effects. Fe2+ -doped samples behave as simple paramagnet with residual antiferromagnetic interactions. Fe3+-doped hybrids are much more complex, with magnetic hysterisis, exchange anisotropy and thermal irreversibility at low temperatures. Néel temperatures increase up to 14K for the highest (∼5.5%) Fe3+ mass concentration.

Coated purpose of homogeneous distribution as a second phase is introduced in magnetic systems. Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) shows special interest as magnetic dye, microwave absorber, and magnetic fluids when heterocoagulated by other material. Surface and interface magnetic properties are intimately connected with the new properties of the silica on YIG system. Néel first introduced the concept of surface anisotropy, and Chen et al. developed a model that describes the anisotropy effects at the boundary surface particle, which was applied in this work. Spherical YIG particles were prepared by coprecipitation method and coated with silica using the tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) hydrolysis process. The silica-YIG boundary was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Hysteresis loops comparatively show the profile of the naked and silica-covered YIG particles. The surface anisotropies were calculated using the Chen et al. approach. Indeed, in heterocoagulation systems, the surface anisotropy is a result of the interface symmetry breaking, as observed.

Heavy metal oxide (HMO) glasses have received special attention due to their optical, electrical and magnetic properties. The problem with these glasses is their corrosive nature. In this work, three ceramic crucibles (Al 2O 3, SnO 2 and ZrO 2) were tested in the melting of the system 40 PbO-35 BiO 1.5-25 GaO 1.5 (cation-%). After glass melting, crucibles were transversally cut and analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), coupled to microanalysis by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results indicated that zirconia crucibles presented the highest corrosion, probably due to its smallest grain size. Tin oxide crucibles presented a low corrosion with small penetration of the glass into the crucible. This way, these crucibles are an interesting alternative to melt corrosive glasses in instead of gold or platinum crucibles. It is important to emphasize the lower cost of tin oxide crucibles, compared to gold or platinum ones.

The thermal behavior of the pyrazolyl complexes [NiCl2(HPz) 4] (1), [Ni(NCS)2(HPz)4] (2), [NiCl 2(HdmPz)4]·2H2O (3) and [Ni(NCS) 2(HdmPz)4]·2H2O (4) (HPz=pyrazole, HdmPz=3,5-dimethylpyrazole) has been studied by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The TG data indicated that the thermal stability of [NiX2(HL)4] (X=Cl, NCS) compounds varies depending on the pyrazolyl ligand in the following order HL=HPz>HdmPz. From the thermal decomposition of 3 and 4 it was possible to isolate the intermediate compounds [Ni(μ-Cl)2(HdmPz)2] (3a) and [Ni(μ-1,3-NCS) 2(HdmPz)2] (4a), respectively. The final products of the thermal decompositions of 1-4 were identified as NiO by X-ray powder diffraction. © 2005 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest.

The crystallization of fluoroindate glasses doped with Gd3+, Mn2+ and Cu2+ heat treated at different temperatures, ranging from the glass transition temperature (Tg) to the crystallization temperature (Tc), are investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and 19F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The EPR spectra indicate that the Cu2+ ions in the glass are located in axially distorted octahedral sites. In the crystallized glass, the g-values agreed with those reported for Ba2ZnF6, which correspond to Cu2+ in a tetragonal compressed F- octahedron and to Cu2+ on interstitial sites with a square-planar F- co-ordination. The EPR spectra of the Mn2+ doped glasses exhibit a sextet structure due to the Mn2+ hyperfine interaction. These spectra suggest a highly ordered environment for the Mn2+ ions (close to octahedral symmetry) in the glass. The EPR spectra of the recrystallized sample exhibit resonances at the same position, suggesting that the Mn2+ ions are located in sites of highly symmetric crystalline field. The increase of the line intensity of the sextet and the decrease of the background line in the thermal treated samples suggest that the Mn2+ ions move to the highly ordered sites which contribute to the sextet structure. The EPR spectra of the Gd3+ doped glasses exhibit the typical U-spectrum of a s-state ion in a low symmetry site in disordered systems. The EPR of the crystallized glasses, in contrast, have shown a strong resonance in g ≈ 2.0, suggesting Gd3+ ions in environment close to cubic symmetry. The 19F NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates were also strongly influenced by the crystallization process that takes over in samples annealed above Tc. For the glass samples (doped or undoped) the 19F magnetization recoveries were found to be adjusted by an exponential function and the spin-lattice relaxation was characterized by a single relaxation time. In contrast, for the samples treated above Tc, the 19F magnetization-recovery becomes non-exponential. A remarkable feature of our results is that the changes in the Cu2+, Mn2+, Gd3+ EPR spectra and NMR relaxation, are always observed for the samples annealed above Tc. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. This work involved the synthesis and characterization of Cu0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 ferrite powders prepared by combustion reaction for use as soft magnetic materials. The powders were characterized by nitrogen adsorption (BET), XRD, Rietveld refinement, SEM, TEM and magnetic measures. The results indicate that the combustion reaction yielded crystalline powders containing spinel ferrite as the primary phase and traces of Fe2O3 as secondary phase. The crystallite size and lattice microdeformation calculated from Rietveld refinements were 36 and 0.24 nm, respectively. The micrographic analysis revealed particles smaller than 100 nm and fine particle agglomerates. The particles were approximately spherical and their size, calculated by TEM, was 29 nm. The magnetic parameters indicated that the Cu-Zn ferrite powders presented closed hysteresis loops and soft magnetic properties. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

A biomimetic sensor based on a carbon paste electrode modified with the nickel(II) 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octabutoxy-29H,31H-phthalocyanine complex was developed as a reliable alternative technique for the sensitive and selective analysis of the herbicide diuron in environmental media. The sensor was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry and amperometric techniques. The best amperometric responses were obtained at 750 mV vs. Ag/AgCl (KClsat), using 0.1 mol L-1 phosphate buffer solution at pH 8.0. Under these conditions, the sensor showed a linear response for diuron concentrations between 9.9 × 10-6 and 1.5 × 10-4 mol L -1, a sensitivity of 22817 (±261) μA L mol-1, and detection and quantification limits of 6.14 × 10-6 and 2 × 10-5 mol L-1, respectively. The presence of the nickel complex in the carbon paste improved selectivity, stability, and sensitivity (which increased 700%), compared to unmodified paste. The applicability of the sensor was demonstrated using enriched environmental samples (river water and soil). © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The magnetic characteristics of Ga1-xMnxN nanocrystalline films (x = 0.08 and x = 0.18), grown by reactive sputtering onto amorphous silica substrates (a-SiO2), are shown. Further than the dominant paramagnetic-like behaviour, both field- and temperature-dependent magnetization curves presented some particular features indicating the presence of secondary magnetic phases. A simple and qualitative analysis based on the Brillouin function assisted the interpretation of these secondary magnetic contributions, which were tentatively attributed to antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. © 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. Yttrium manganite (YMnO3) is a multiferroic material, which means that it exhibits both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties, so making it interesting for a variety of technological applications. In this work, single-phase YMnO3 was prepared for the first time by mechanochemical synthesis in a planetary ball mill. The YMnO3 was formed directly from the highly activated constituent oxides, Y 2O3 and Mn2O3, after 60 min of milling time. During prolonged milling, the growth of the particles occurred. The cumulative energy introduced into the system during milling for 60 min was 86 kJ/g. The X-ray powder-diffraction analysis indicates that the as-prepared samples crystallize with an orthorhombic (Pnma) YMnO3 structure. The morphology and chemical composition of the powder were investigated by SEM and FESEM. The magnetic properties of the obtained YMnO3 powders were found to change as a function of the milling time in a manner consistent with the variation in the nanocomposite microstructure. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. The understanding and control of ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconducting oxides (DMO) is a special challenge in solid-state physics and materials science due to its impact in magneto-optical devices and spintronics. Several studies and mechanisms have been proposed to explain intrinsic ferromagnetism in DMO compounds since the theoretical prediction of room-temperature ferromagnetism. However, genuine and intrinsic ferromagnetism in 3d-transition metal-doped n-type ZnO semiconductors is still a controversial issue. Furthermore, for DMO nanoparticles, some special physical and chemical effects may also play a role. In this contribution, structural and magnetic properties of sonochemically prepared cobalt-doped ZnO nanoparticles were investigated. A set of ZnO samples was prepared varying cobalt molar concentration and time of ultrasonic exposure. The obtained results showed that single phase samples can be obtained by the sonochemical method. However, cobalt nanoclusters can be detected depending on synthesis conditions. Magnetic measurements indicated a possible ferromagnetic response, associated to defects and cobalt substitutions at the zinc site by cobalt. However, ferromagnetism is depleted at higher magnetic fields. Also, an antiferromagnetic response is detected due to cobalt oxide cluster at high cobalt molar concentrations. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
