A new polyoxometalate [Co(phen)(3)](2)[HPMo4V Mo-4(VI) V-6(IV) M2O44]center dot 4H(2)O (M = 0.78Mo(V)+ 0.22V(IV)) 1 was hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by IR, elemental analyses, X-ray photoelectron spectrum, ESR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compound is in the triclinic space group P (1) over bar with a = 12.0953(7) angstrom, b = 14.0182(6) angstrom, c = 14.6468(7) angstrom, V=2402.55(18) angstrom(3), alpha = 105.134(2), beta = 91.841(3), gamma = 91.401(2), Z = 1, and R-1 (wR(2)) = 0.0617 (0.1701). The compound was prepared from tetra-capped pseudo-Kepin with phosphorus-centered polyoxoanions [PMo8V6M2O44](5-) , [Co(phen)(3)](2+) cations and linked through hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking interaction into three-dimensional supramolecular framework. Astudy of the magnetic properties of 1 demonstrates that it exhibits antiferromagnetic coupling interactions.

A simultaneous reduction SO42- to S2- by 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylate under hydrothermal conditions produced a new binuclear copper(II) coordination polymer [CuS(4,4'-bipy)](n) (4,4-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine) (1). Single crystal X-ray analysis revealed that compound I consisted of sulfur-bridged binuclear copper(II) units with Cu-Cu bonding which were combined with 4,4-bipy to generate a three-dimensional network constructed from mutual interpenetration of two-dimensional (6,3) nets. Crystal data for 1:C10H8CuN2S, tetragonal 14(1)/acd, a = 14.0686(5) Angstrom, b = 14.0686(5) Angstrom, c = 38.759(2) Angstrom, Z = 32. Other characterizations by elemental analysis, IR, EPR and TGA analysis were also described in this paper.

Ni0.65Zn0.35Cu0.1Fe1.9O4/SiO2 nanocomposites with different weight percentages of NiZnCu-ferrite dispersed in silica matrix were successfully fabricated by the sol-gel method using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor of silica, and metal nitrates as precursors of NiZnCu ferrite. The thermal decomposition process of the dried gel was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The obtained Ni0.65Zn0.35Cu0.1Fe1.9O4/SiO2 nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Mossbauer spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The formation of stoichiometric NiZnCu-ferrite dispersed in silica matrix is confirmed when the weight percentage of ferrite is not more than 30%. Samples with higher ferrite content have small amount of alpha-Fe2O3. The transition from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic state is observed as the ferrite content increases from 20 to 90wt%.

Berlin green FeFe(CN)(6) microcubic crystals have been successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal process between K-3[Fe(CN)(6)] with Na2S2O3 aqueous solution, free of any surfactant or template. The experimental results clearly show that the molar ratio of K-3[Fe(CN)(6)] to Na2S2O3 and their concentrations are the dominant processing factors in controlling the size, morphology, and composition of the resulting products.

Sr2Fe1-xZnxNbO6-x/2 (0 <= x <= 0.5) and Sr2Fe1-xCuxNbO6-x/2 (0.01 <= x <= 0.05) with the double perovskite structure have been synthesized. The crystal structures at room temperature were determined from Rietveld refinements of X-ray powder diffraction data. The plots of the imaginary parts of the impedance spectrum, Z '', and the electric modulus, M '', versus log (frequency), possess maxima for both curves separated by less than a half decade in frequency with associated capacities of 2 nF. The enhancement of the overall conductivity Of Sr2Fe1-xMxNbO6-x/2 (M = Cu and Zn) is observed, as increases from 2.48 (3) x 10(-4) S/cm for Sr2FeNbO6 to 3.82 (5) x 10(-3) S/cm for Sr2Fe0.8Zn0.2NbO5.9 at 673 K. Sr2Fe0.8Zn0.2NbO5.9 is chemically stable under the oxygen partial pressure from 1 atm to 10(-22) atm at 873 K. The p and n-type electronic conductions are dominant under oxidizing and reducing conditions, respectively, suggesting a small-polaron hopping mechanism of electronic conduction.

A copper-strontium heterometallic coordination polymer was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and IR spectra. The crystal structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The title complex is a 2 D coordination polymer with the chemical formula [[(CuL)(2)Sr (H2O) center dot Sr-2 ((HO)-O-2)(7)]center dot 2H(2)O center dot 0.5CH(3)OH](n), where H4L = N-(2-hydroxybenzamido)-N'-(3-carboxylsalicylidene) ethylenediamine. Its structural unit is comprised of two adjacent units, which polymerized with each other to form a new layered heterometallic coordination polymer.

A new compound, (CH5N2)(3)(PMo12O40CH4N23H2O)-C-.-H-. (1), was synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra, UV spectra, NMR spectra and ESR spectra. This is, to our knowledge, the first example of an imidazole-polyoxometalate species. The compound was recrystallized from N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and then black block-like crystals of (C3H5N2)(4)((PMoMo11O40)-Mo-V-O-VI)(.)4C(3)H(7)NO(.) 2H(2)O (2), were obtained. It crystallizes in a triclinic space group P (1) over bar with n=12.423(3) Angstrom, b=12.666(3) Angstrom, c=13.341(3) Angstrom, alpha=70.56(3)degrees, beta=71.16(3)degrees, gamma=64.18(3)degrees, V= 1742.3(6) Angstrom(3), Z=1, R1 = 0.0585, wR2 = 0.1885. An X-ray crystallographic study showed that the crystal structure is constructed by electrostatic attractions and hydrogen bonds between a dodecamolybdophosphoric anion and an imidazole. The imidazole and DMF molecules occupy cavities in a polyoxometalate lattice ordered along a c-axis. The structure of (2) is similar to that of (1) from a comparison of both IR spectra and TGA Curves.

The rational synthesis and the structural and magnetic characterization of a nickel cluster are presented. The compound comprises a rhomblike Ni4O16 group encapsulated between two-heptadentate tungstoarsenate ligands [AsW9O34](9-). The crystal structure of K-10[Ni-4(H2O)(2)(AsW9O34)(2)](.)4H(2)O was solved in monoclinic, P2(1)/n symmetry, with a = 12.258(3) Angstrom, b = 21.232(4) Angstrom, c = 15.837(3) Angstrom, beta = 92.05(3)degrees, V = 4119.1(14) Angstrom(3), Z = 2, and R = 0.0862. The crystal structure of the Ni(II) derivative was compared with that of the Cu(II), Zn(II), Co(II) and Mn(II) derivatives. The Ni4O14(H2O)(2) unit in the compound shows no Jahn-Teller distortion. On the other hand, the Ni(II) derivative shows ferromagnetic exchange interactions within the Ni4O16 group (J = 7.8 cm(-1), J' = 13.7 cm(-1)) and an S = 4 ground state, the highest spin state reported in a heteropoly complex. Its redox electrochemistry has been studied in acid buffer solutions using cyclic voltammetry. It exhibited two steps of one-electron redox waves attributed to redox processes of the tungsten-oxo framework. The new catalyst showed an electrocatalytic effect on the reduction of NO2-.

A water-soluble endohedral metallofullerol, Pr@C82Om(OH)(n)(m approximate to 10 and n approximate to 10), was successfully synthesized through the reaction of a pure endohedral metallofullerene, Pr@C-82, with a concentrated nitric acid and a subsequent hydrolysis process. The formation of endohedral metallofullerols Pr@C82Om(OH)(n) is thought to involve a NO2 radical formation step, in much the same way as the reaction of empty fullerenes. FT-IR, XPS, and LD-TOF MS techniques were employed to characterize the structure of the endohedral metallofullerol from the above reaction.

The magnetic properties of naturally layered intermetallic compound SmMn2Si2 with textured structure have been studied. There exist a ferromagnetic transition at 35 K and two antiferromagnetic transitions at 120 and 230 K. The antiferromagnetic state below 230 K exhibits different magnetoresistance, with a negative magnetoresistance of 3%-4% for current I applied perpendicular to the c axis and with a positive magnetoresistance effect of about 4%-6% for current I parallel to the c axis. The observed magnetoresistance is likely to be related to magnetovolume effects. In the ferromagnetic state, a positive magnetoresistance with a maximum increase of 22% under an applied field of 5 T is observed at 4 K, and both H perpendicular to I and H parallel to I configurations show positive magnetoresistance. A range of lanthanum strontium manganates (La1−xSrxMnO3–LSMO) where 0 ≤ x < 0.4 were prepared using a modified peroxide sol–gel synthesis method. The magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) clusters obtained for each of the materials were characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and infra-red (IR) spectroscopy in order to confirm the crystalline phases, crystallite size and cluster morphology. The magnetic properties of the materials were assessed using the Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) to evaluate the magnetic susceptibility, Curie temperature (Tc) and static hysteretic losses. Induction heating experiments also provided an insight into the magnetocaloric effect for each material. The specific absorption rate (SAR) of the materials was evaluated experimentally and via numerical simulations. The magnetic properties and heating data were linked with the crystalline structure to make predictions with respect to the best LSMO composition for mild hyperthermia (41 °C ≤ T ≤ 46 °C). La0.65Sr0.35MnO3, with crystallite diameter of 82.4 nm, (agglomerate size of ∼10 μm), Tc of 89 °C and SAR of 56 W gMn−1 at a concentration 10 mg mL−1 gave the optimal induction heating results (Tmax of 46.7 °C) and was therefore deemed as most suitable for the purposes of mild hyperthermia, vide infra.

Single crystals of (Bal - xKx)Fe2As2 were prepared using the Sn flux method. Two heating methods were used to prepare the single crystals: the slow heating and rapid heating methods. It was found that the single crystals grown using the slow heating method were not superconducting due to a significant loss of potassium. When the rapid heating method was used, the single crystals were observed to be superconducting with the desired potassium concentration. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis indicated the presence of multiple phases in the single crystals. Using single crystal X-ray diffraction, the crystal structure of the single crystals was found to be 14/mmm tetragonal at room temperature. The magnetic measurements on the single crystals indicated the presence of multiple phases and magnetic impurities.

The synthesis of 3-ethynylthienyl- (2.07), 3-ethynylterthienyl- (2.19) substituted qsal [qsalH = N-(8-quinolyl)salicylaldimine] and 3,3' -diethynyl-2,2' -bithienyl bridging bisqsal (5.06) ligands are described along with the preparation and characterization of eight cationic iron(III) complexes containing these ligands with a selection of counteranions [(2.07) with: SCN- (2.08), PF6- (2.09), and CI04- (2.10); (2.19) with PF6 - (2.20); (5.06) with: cr (5.07), SeN- (5.08), PF6- (5.09), and CI04- (5.10)]. Spin-crossover is observed in the solid state for (2.08) - (2.10) and (5.07) - (5.10), including a ve ry rare S = 5/2 to 3/2 spin-crossover in complex (2.09). The unusal reduction of complex (2.10) produces a high-spin iron(I1) complex (2.12). Six iron(II) complexes that are derived from thienyl analogues of bispicen [bispicen = bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-diamine] [2,5-thienyl substituents = H- (3.11), Phenyl- (3.12), 2- thienyl (3.13) or N-phenyl-2-pyridinalimine ligands [2,5-phenyl substituents = diphenyl (3.23), di(2-thienyl) (3.24), 4-phenyl substituent = 3-thienyl (3.25)] are reported Complexes (3.11), (3.23) and (3.25) display thermal spin-crossover in the solid state and (3.12) remains high-spin at all temperatures. Complex (3.13) rearranges to form an iron(II) complex (3.14) with temperature dependent magnetic properties be s t described as a one-dimensional ferromagnetic chain, with interchain antiferromagnetic interactions and/or ZFS dominant at low temperatures. Magnetic succeptibility and Mossbauer data for complex (3.24) display a temperature dependent mixture of spin isomers. The preparation and characterization of two cobalt(II) complexes containing 3- ethynylthienyl- (4.04) and 3-ethynylterhienyl- (4.06) substituted bipyridine ligands [(4.05): [Co(dbsqh(4.04)]; (4.07): [Co(dbsq)2(4.06)]] [dbsq = 3,5-dbsq=3,5-di-tert-butylI ,2-semiquinonate] are reported. Complexes (4.05) and (4.07) exhibit thermal valence tautomerism in the solid state and in solution. Self assembly of complex (2.10) into polymeric spheres (6.11) afforded the first spincrossover, polydisperse, micro- to nanoscale material of its kind. . Complexes (2.20), (3.24) and (4.07) also form polymers through electrochemical synthesis to produce hybrid metaUopolymer films (6.12), (6.15) and (6.16), respectively. The films have been characterized by EDX, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrate that spin lability is operative in the polymers and conductivity measurements confirm the electron transport properties. Polymer (6.15) has a persistent oxidized state that shows a significant decrease in electrical resistance.
