Based on the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle, the mutual coherence function of quasi-monochromatic electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model (EGSM) beams propagating through turbulent atmosphere is derived analytically. By employing the lateral and the longitudinal coherence length of EGSM beams to characterize the spatial and the temporal coherence of the beams, the behavior of changes in the spatial and the temporal coherence of those beams is studied. The results show that with a fixed set of beam parameters and under particular atmospheric turbulence model, the lateral coherence of an EGSM beam reaches its maximum value as the beam propagates a certain distance in the turbulent atmosphere, then it begins degrading and keeps decreasing along with the further distance. However, the longitudinal coherence length of an EGSM beam keeps unchanging in this propagation. Lastly, a qualitative explanation is given to these results. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. An analytical formula for the cross-spectral density matrix of the electric field of anisotropic electromagnetic Gaussian-Schell model beams propagating in free space is derived by using a tensor method. The effects of coherence on those beams are studied. It is shown that two anisotropic stochastic electromagnetic beams that propagate from the source plane z = 0 into the half-space z > 0 may have different beam shapes (i.e., spectral density) and states of polarization in the half-space, even though they have the same beam shape and states of polarization in the source plane. This fact is due to a difference in the coherence properties of the field in the source plane. (C) 2007 Optical Society of America.

A method is developed for calculating the electromagnetic field scattered by certain types of bodies. The bodies consist of inhomogeneous media whose constitutive parameters vary only with the distance from some axis or point of symmetry. The method consists in an extension of the invariant imbedding method for treating wave problems. This method, which is familiar in the case of a one-dimensional inhomogeneity, is extended to handle special types of two and three-dimensional inhomogeneities. Comparisons are made with other methods which have been proposed for treating these kinds of problems. Examples of applications of the method are given, some of which are of interest in themselves.

A technique is developed for the design of lenses for transitioning TEM waves between conical and/or cylindrical transmission lines, ideally with no reflection or distortion of the waves. These lenses utilize isotropic but inhomogeneous media and are based on a solution of Maxwell's equations instead of just geometrical optics. The technique employs the expression of the constitutive parameters, ɛ and μ, plus Maxwell's equations, in a general orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system in tensor form, giving what we term as formal quantities. Solving the problem for certain types of formal constitutive parameters, these are transformed to give ɛ and μ as functions of position. Several examples of such lenses are considered in detail.

The nature of the intra- and intermolecular base-stacking interactions involving several dinucleoside monophosphates in aqueous solution have been investigated by proton magnetic resonance spectrosocopy, and this method has been applied to a study of the interaction of polyuridylic acid with purine and adenosine monomers.

The pmr spectra of adenylyl (3' → 5') cytidine (ApC) and cytidylyl (3' → 5') adenosine (CpA) have been studied as a function of concentration and temperature. The results of these studies indicate that the intramolecular base-stacking interactions between the adenine and cytosine bases of these dinucleoside monophosphates are rather strong, and that the stacking tendencies are comparable for the two sequence isomers. The chemical shifts of the cytosine H5 and adenine H2 protons, and their variations with temperature, were shown to be consistent with stacked conformations in which both bases of the dinucleoside monophosphates are preferentially oriented in the anti conformation as in similar dApdC, and dCpdA (dA = deoxyadenosine; dC = deoxycytidine) segments in double helical DNA. The intramolecular stacking interaction was found to have a pronounced effect on the conformations of the ribose moieties, and these conformational changes are discussed. The concentration studies indicate extensive self-association of these dinucleoside monophosphates, and analysis of the concentration data facilitated determination of the dimerization constant for the association process as well as the nature of the intermolecular complexes.

The dependence of the ribose conformation upon the extent of intramolecular base-stacking was used to demonstrate that the base-base interaction in cytidylyl (3' → 5') cytidine (CpC) is rather strong, while there appears to be little interaction between the two uracil bases of uridylyl (3' → 5') uridine (UpU).

Studies of the binding of purine to several ribose and deoxyribose dinucleoside monophosphates show that the mode of interaction is base-stacking, and evidence for the formation of a purine-dinucleoside monophosphate intercalated complex is presented. The purine proton resonances are markedly broadened in this complex, and estimates of the purine linewidths in the complex and the equilibrium constant for purine intercalation are obtained.

A study of the interaction of unsubstitued purine with polyuridylic acid at 29°C by pmr indicated that purine binds to the uracil bases of the polymer by base-stacking. The severe broadening of the purine proton resonances observed provides strong evidence for the intercalation of purine between adjacent uracil bases of poly U. This interaction does not result in a more rigid or ordered structure for the polymer.

Investigation of the interaction between adenosine and polyuridylic acid revealed two modes of interaction between the monomer and the polymer, depending on the temperature. At temperatures above 26°C or so, monomeric adenosine binds to poly U by noncooperative A-U base stacking. Below this temperature, a rigid triple-stranded 1A:2U complex is formed, presumably via cooperative hydrogen-bonding as has previously been reported.

These results clearly illustrate the importance of base-stacking in non-specific interactions between bases, nucleosides and nucleotides, and also reveal the important role of the base-stacking interactions in cooperatively for med structures involving specific base-pairing where both types of interaction are possible.

Due to their high specific strength and low density, magnesium and magnesium-based alloys have gained great technological importance in recent years. However, their underlying hexagonal crystal structure furnishes Mg and its alloys with a complex mechanical behavior because of their comparably smaller number of energetically favorable slip systems. Besides the commonly studied slip mechanism, another way to accomplish general deformation is through the additional mechanism of deformation-induced twinning. The main aim of this thesis research is to develop an efficient continuum model to understand and ultimately predict the material response resulting from the interaction between these two mechanisms.

The constitutive model we present is based on variational constitutive updates of plastic slips and twin volume fractions and accounts for the related lattice reorientation mechanisms. The model is applied to single- and polycrystalline pure magnesium. We outline the finite-deformation plasticity model combining basal, pyramidal, and prismatic dislocation activity as well as a convexification based approach for deformation twinning. A comparison with experimental data from single-crystal tension-compression experiments validates the model and serves for parameter identification. The extension to polycrystals via both Taylor-type modeling and finite element simulations shows a characteristic stress-strain response that agrees well with experimental observations for polycrystalline magnesium. The presented continuum model does not aim to represent the full details of individual twin-dislocation interactions, yet it is sufficiently efficient to allow for finite element simulations while qualitatively capturing the underlying microstructural deformation mechanisms.

This thesis explores the dynamics of scale interactions in a turbulent boundary layer through a forcing-response type experimental study. An emphasis is placed on the analysis of triadic wavenumber interactions since the governing Navier-Stokes equations for the flow necessitate a direct coupling between triadically consist scales. Two sets of experiments were performed in which deterministic disturbances were introduced into the flow using a spatially-impulsive dynamic wall perturbation. Hotwire anemometry was employed to measure the downstream turbulent velocity and study the flow response to the external forcing. In the first set of experiments, which were based on a recent investigation of dynamic forcing effects in a turbulent boundary layer, a 2D (spanwise constant) spatio-temporal normal mode was excited in the flow; the streamwise length and time scales of the synthetic mode roughly correspond to the very-large-scale-motions (VLSM) found naturally in canonical flows. Correlation studies between the large- and small-scale velocity signals reveal an alteration of the natural phase relations between scales by the synthetic mode. In particular, a strong phase-locking or organizing effect is seen on directly coupled small-scales through triadic interactions. Having characterized the bulk influence of a single energetic mode on the flow dynamics, a second set of experiments aimed at isolating specific triadic interactions was performed. Two distinct 2D large-scale normal modes were excited in the flow, and the response at the corresponding sum and difference wavenumbers was isolated from the turbulent signals. Results from this experiment serve as an unique demonstration of direct non-linear interactions in a fully turbulent wall-bounded flow, and allow for examination of phase relationships involving specific interacting scales. A direct connection is also made to the Navier-Stokes resolvent operator framework developed in recent literature. Results and analysis from the present work offer insights into the dynamical structure of wall turbulence, and have interesting implications for design of practical turbulence manipulation or control strategies.

We analyze the electromagnetic spatital distributions and address an important issue of the transmission properties of spherical transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) eigenmodes within a tapered hollow metallic waveguide in detail. Explicit analytical expressions for the spatital distributions of electromagnetic field components, attenuation constant, phase constant and wave impedance are derived. Accurate eigenvalues obtained numerically are used to study the dependences of the transmission properties on the taper angle, the mode as well as the length of the waveguide. It is shown that all modes run continuously from a propagating through a transition to an evanescent region and the value of the attenuation increases as the distance from the cone vertex and the cone angle decrease. A strict distinction between pure propagating and pure evanescent modes cannot be achieved. One mode after the other reaches cutoff in the tapered hollow metallic waveguide as the distance from the cone vertex desreases. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America

Synthetic metalloporphyrin complexes are often used as analogues of natural systems, and they can be used for the preparation of new Solid Coordination Frameworks (SCFs). In this work, a series of six metalloporphyrinic compounds constructed from different meso substituted metalloporphyrins (phenyl, carboxyphenyl and sulfonatophenyl) have been structurally characterized by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The compounds were classified considering the dimensionality of the crystal array, referred just to coordination bonds, into 0D, 1D and 2D compounds. This way, the structural features and relationships of those crystal structures were analyzed, in order to extract conclusions not only about the dimensionality of the networks but also about possible applications of the as-obtained compounds, focusing the interest on the interactions of coordination and crystallization molecules. These interactions provide the coordination bonds and the cohesion forces which produce SCFs with different dimensionalities.

ENGLISH: In April 1981 the IATTC convened a working group of scientists in Managua, Nicaragua to discuss the tuna-dolphin association and to suggest priorities for future research which would enable the effects of any interaction to be detected or quantified. The yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, fishery in the eastern tropical Pacific is unique in that a significant proportion of the catch is of fish found in association with one or more species of dolphins. This association has never been fully understood but for many years tuna fishermen have used the more visible and more easily herded dolphin schools to help them locate and capture the tuna. In recent years, the concept of managing renewable resources in relation to their environments has been more fully developed. Any renewable resource is closely linked to other components in its general system and it is becoming increasingly more apparent that the harvesting of one resource affects another. This is the case with yellowfin tuna and dolphins in the eastern tropical Pacific, although the dolphins are killed incidental to the fishery and are not harvested. There would seem to be obvious advantages in managing the tuna-dolphin complex as a whole. To do this it is necessary to understand the effect that tuna and dolphins have on each other and the causal mechanisms of the interactions.

Based on the 2 x 2 (electric field) cross-spectral density matrix, a model for an electromagnetic J(0)-correlated Schell-model beam is given that is a generalization of the scalar J(0)-correlated Schell-model beam. The conditions that the matrix for the source to generate an electromagnetic J(0)-correlated Schell-model beam are obtained. The condition for the source to generate a scalar J(0)-correlated Schell-model beam can be considered as a special case. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America
