LEAF AREA REDUCTION IN CORN GROWN IN A TROPICAL REGION OF BRAZIL AND ITS EFFECTS ON AGRONOMIC TRAITS

Global climate change may reduce leaf area in crop plants due to factors such as increasing occurrence of pests and diseases. The aim of this work was to estimate the impact of leaf area reduction on agronomic traits in corn. An experiment simulating leaf area reduction was carried out in a tropical region of Brazil. The agronomic performance of corn plants was evaluated at different percentages of leaf loss. It was observed that leaf area reductions over 41.01% significantly harm yield, mass of 1000 grains, cob density, and stem and root quality Crop improvement programs should take into account the development of genotypes resistant to factors that cause leaf area reduction in tropical crops.

Background and Purpose: What drives some athletes to achieve at the highest level whilst other athletes fail to achieve their physical potential? Why does the ‘fire’ burn so brightly for some elite athletes and not for others? A good understanding of an athlete’s motivation is critical to a coach designing an appropriate motivational climate to realize an athlete’s physical talent. This paper examines the motivational processes of elite athletes within the framework of three major social-cognitive theories of motivation. Method: Participants were five male and five female elite track and field athletes from Australia who had finished in the top ten at either the Olympic Games and/or the World Championships in the last six years. Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews. Results and Discussion: Inductive analyses revealed several major themes associated with the motivational processes of elite athletes: (a) they were highly driven by personal goals and achievement, (b) they had strong self-belief, and (c) track and field was central to their lives. The findings are discussed in light of recent social-cognitive theories of motivation, namely, self-determination theory, the hierarchical model of motivation, and achievement goal theory. Self-determined forms of motivation characterised the elite athletes in this study and, consistent with social-cognitive theories of motivation, it is suggested that goal accomplishment enhances perceptions of competence and consequently promotes self-determined forms of motivation.

Vic Slater and police during the Youth Campaign against Conscription, Brisbane, Australia in 1965. Victor Charles Slater (now retired) was born in Queensland in March 1944 the only child of Jim and Joyce Slater, card carrying members of the Communist Party of Australia. Vic's mother, Joyce, joined up in Great Britain. Vic too joined the party in 1962 after a stint as president of the Eureka Youth League. He stayed with the more broad left CPA when it split from the hardline Stalinists after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Vic joined the Waterside Workers' Federation before his 21st birthday in January 1965, one of 300 casual workers recruited to the Port of Brisbane that year. On the wharves he soon earned the nickname 'the Professor' arriving on the job each day bespectacled and carrying a briefcase heavy with reading matter on world politics and economics - a walking encyclopaedia of information. Starting with an initial price vector, prices are adjusted in order to eliminate the excess demand and at the same time to keep the transfers to the sellers as low as possible. In each step of the auction, to which set of sellers should those transfers be made is the key issue in the description of the algorithm. We assume additively separable utilities and introduce a novel distinction by considering multiple sellers owing multiple identical objects and multiple buyers with an exogenously defined quota, consuming more than one object but at most one unit of a seller`s good and having multi-dimensional payoffs. This distinction induces a necessarily more complicated construction of the over-demanded sets than the constructions of these sets for the other assignment games. For this approach, our mechanism yields the buyer-optimal competitive equilibrium payoff, which equals the buyer-optimal stable payoff. The symmetry of the model allows to getting the seller-optimal stable payoff and the seller-optimal competitive equilibrium payoff can then be also derived.

We characterize asymmetric equilibria in two-stage process innovation games and show that they are prevalent in the different models of R&D technology considered in the literature. Indeed, cooperation in R&D may be accompanied by high concentration in the product market. We show that while such an increase may be profitable, it may be socially inefficient.

In seeking to increase the flexibility of their use of employee time, employers can pursue strategies based on the employment of casual and part-time workers (numerical flexibility) or strategies based on ad hoc variation of the working hours of permanent employees (working time flexibility). Patterns of flexibility strategies and their implications are examined in the context of a highly feminised sector of work-clerical and administrative employment in law and accounting firms. We consider whether, as is often assumed, working time flexibility strategies are generally better for employees because they avoid the substitution of core, high quality jobs with the peripheral, relatively insecure employment often associated with casualisation. Analysing data drawn from a survey of law and accounting firms, we argue that there are three distinct flexibility strategies adopted by employers, and that the choice of strategy is influenced by the size of the firm and the extent of feminisation. The quality of employment conditions associated with each strategy is investigated through an analysis of the determinants of training provision for clerical and administrative workers. Rather than an expected simple linear relationship between increasing casualisation and decreasing training provision, we find that firm size and feminisation are implicated. Larger firms that tend to employ at least some men and use a combination of working time and numerical flexibility strategies tend to provide more training than the small, more fully feminised firms that tend to opt for either casualisation or working time flexibility strategies. This suggests that, from an employee perspective, working time flexibility may not be as benevolent as is often thought.

Using the framework of Communication Accommodation Theory, this study investigated the extent to which job applicants objectively and subjectively altered their accents to converge to or diverge from the speech style of the interviewer Forty-eight male and 48 female job applicants participated in two interviews for a casual research assistant position. In one interview, the interviewer had a broad Australian English accent, and in the other one, the interviewer had a cultivated accent. Applicants showed broader accents with broad-accented interviewers than with cultivated-accented interviewers. Applicants did not converge to the cultivated-accented interviewers, however and male job applicants were more likely than mere females to diverge from the cultivated-accented interviewers. There were also discrepancies between objectively rated changes to applicants' accents and their subjective judgments about the extent of accent accommodation.

In most previous work on strategic trade policy the form of government intervention has been prescribed in advance. In this paper, we apply a solution concept discussed by Klemperer and Meyer for games in which the strategy space consists of the class of all (non state-contingent) price quantity schedules. We examine a series of specific assumptions on demand and supply conditions and derive the associated equilibrium trade policies. We derive welfare implications for all cases examined.

This article examines the efficiency of the National Football League (NFL) betting market. The standard ordinary least squares (OLS) regression methodology is replaced by a probit model. This circumvents potential econometric problems, and allows us to implement more sophisticated betting strategies where bets are placed only when there is a relatively high probability of success. In-sample tests indicate that probit-based betting strategies generate statistically significant profits. Whereas the profitability of a number of these betting strategies is confirmed by out-of-sample testing, there is some inconsistency among the remaining out-of-sample predictions. Our results also suggest that widely documented inefficiencies in this market tend to dissipate over time.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of the environment and the observer on the measurement of blood pressure (BP) as well as to compare home BP (HBP) and ambulatory BP (ABP) measurements in the diagnosis of white coat hypertension (WCH) and masked hypertension (MH) in children and adolescents with hypertension (HT). METHODS BP of 40 patients with HT (75% of which had secondary HT and were on antihypertensive medication), mean age 12.1 years was evaluated through casual measurements at the clinic and at the HT unit, HBP for 14 days with the OMRON HEM 705 CP monitor (Omron, Tokyo, Japan) and ABP performed with SPACELABS 90207 (Spacelabs, Redmond, WA), for 24 h. RESULTS HT was diagnosed at the doctor`s office by ABP and HBP in 30/40, 27/40, and 31/40 patients, respectively. Based on office BP and ABP, 60% of patients were normotensive, 17.5% HT, 7.5% had WCH, and 15% had MH, whereas based on office BP and HBP 65, 12.5, 10, and 12.5% of patients were classified according to these diagnoses, respectively. There was considerable diagnostic agreement of HT by ABP and HBP (McNemar test, P < 0.01) (kappa = 0.56). CONCLUSION In hypertensive children and adolescents, HBP and ABP present comparable results. HBP appears to be a useful diagnostic test for the detection of MH and WCH in pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an established cause of hypertension However, it is not clear whether the frequency of masked hypertension in patients with OSA and whether OSA have an independent role on arterial stiffness taking into account ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring (ABPM) METHODS We evaluated 61 male normotensive participants as determined by casual clinic BP level <140/90 mm Hg without clinical evidence of cardiovascular disease and on no medications (43 patients with moderate-to-severe OSA (apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) >= 15 events/hour by polysomnography) and 18 age- and body mass index-matched controls without OSA (AHl <5 events/hour)) Pulse wave velocity (PWV), an index of arterial stiffness, and 24-h ABPM were performed in a blinded fashion Masked hypertension was defined when abnormal daytime ABPM was >= 135 or >= 85 mm Hg RESULTS The AHI and lowest oxygen saturation were 26 +/- 16 and 90 +/- 2 vs 528 +/- 210 events/hour and 75 +/- 10% for controls and OSA patients, respectively, P < 0 001. Compared with controls, patients with OSA had higher office systolic BP (113 +/- 9 vs 118 +/- 10 mm Hg, P=0 05) and a higher unadjusted proportion of masked hypertension (2 controls (11.1%)vs 13 patients (30 2%), P < 005) PWV was 87 +/- 0.7, 9.4 +/- 1.0, and 10.6 +/- 1.1 m/s in the control, OSA without and with masked hypertension groups, respectively (P < 0 01 for each comparison) Multiple regression showed that systolic daytime ABPM and the lowest oxygen saturation were independently related to PWV (adjusted R(2) = 0 34, P < 0 01) CONCLUSIONS Patients with OSA presented a higher unadjusted rate of masked hypertension than matched controls.
