There is a research knowledge gap for the dry wear data of nitride treated Stainless Steel in high temperature and high vacuum environment. In order to fill this gap, plasma nitriding was done on austenitic Stainless Steel type AISI 316LN (316LN SS) and dry sliding wear tests have been conducted at 25 degrees C, 200 degrees C and 400 degrees C in high vacuum of 1.6 x 10(-4) bar. The two different slider material (316LN SS and Colmonoy) and two different sliding speeds (0.0576 m/s and 0.167 m/s) have been used. The tribological parameters such as friction coefficient, wear mechanism and volume of metal loss have been evaluated. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to study the surface morphology of the worn pins and rings. Electronic balancing machine was used to record the mass of metal loss during wear tests. The 2D optical profilometer was used to measure the depth of the wear track. The Plasma Nitride treated 316LN SS rings (PN rings) exhibit excellent wear resistance against 316LN SS pin and Colmonoy pin at all temperatures. However, PN ring vs. Colmonoy pin Pair shows better wear resistance than PN ring vs. 316LN SS pin Pair at higher temperature. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The synthesis and DNA photocleavage studies of furano3,2-c]-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines have been reported. Sm(III)nitrate was found to be an efficient for the Diels-Alder reaction of aryl amines with 2,3-dihydrofuran to offer the corresponding furano3,2-c]-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines derivatives as a mixture of cis/trans stereoisomers in moderate yields. The aqueous solubility of acid catalyst can be recycled without significant loss of activity. The DNA photocleavage studies shows that, the cis/trans stereoisomers are good DNA cleavage mimic in terms of molecular structure. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

4-Alkoxy benzoic acids belong to an important class of thermotropic liquid crystals that are structurally simple and often used as starting materials for many novel mesogens. 4-Hexyloxybenzoic acid (HBA) is a homologue of the same series and exhibits an enantiotropic nematic phase. As this molecule could serve as an ideal model compound, high resolution C-13 NMR studies of HEA in solution, solid, and liquid crystalline phases have been undertaken. In the solid state, two-dimensional separation of undistorted powder patterns by effortless recoupling (2D SUPER) experiments have been carried out to estimate the magnitude of the components of the chemical shift anisotropy (GSA) tensor of all the aromatic carbons. These values have been used subsequently for calculating the orientational order parameters in the liquid crystalline phase. The GSA values computed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed good agreement with the 2D SUPER values. Additionally, C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings in the nematic phase have been determined by separated local field (SLF) spectroscopy at various temperatures and were used for computing the order parameters, which compared well with those calculated by using the chemical shifts. It is anticipated that the CSA values determined for MBA would be useful for the assignment of carbon chemical shifts and for the study of order and dynamics of structurally similar novel mesogens in their nematic phases.

In this paper, we have carried out thin film characterization of poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene)-sultone (PProDOT-S), a derivative of electrochromic poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT). PProDOT-S was deposited onto transparent conducting oxide coated glass substrates by solution casting method. Single wavelength spectrophotometry is used to monitor the switching speed and contrast ratio at maximum wavelength (lambda (max)). The percentage transmittance at the lambda (max) of the neutral polymer is monitored as a function of time when the polymer film is repeatedly switched. This experiment gives a quantitative measure of the speed with which a film is able to switch between the two states i.e. the coloured and the bleached states. PProDOT-S films were switched at a voltage of 1 center dot 9 V with a switching speed of 2 s at lambda (max) of 565 nm and showed a contrast of similar to 37%. Cyclic voltammetry performed at different scan rates have shown the characteristic anodic and cathodic peaks. The structural investigations of PProDOT-S films by IR spectra were in good agreement with previously reported results. Raman spectra of PProDOT-S showed a strong Raman peak at 1509 cm (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) and a weak peak at 1410 cm (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) due to the C = C asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of thiophene rings. The morphological investigations carried out by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) of polymer films have shown that these polymers are found to be arranged in dense packed clusters with non-uniform distribution having an average width and length of 95 nm and 160 nm, respectively.

Electrochemical deposition of Pd on conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) coated carbon paper electrode results in the formation of a stable dendritic film of Pd. In the absence of the PEDOT under-layer, Pd deposition is smooth and non-dendritic. Both Pd-PEDOT/C and Pd/C electrodes are studied for electrooxidation of 1,2-propanediol (PD) in an alkaline electrolyte. Owing to enhanced surface area and surface defects on dendritic Pd, the Pd-PEDOT/C electrode exhibits greater catalytic activity than the Pd/C electrode. Cyclic voltammetry studies suggest that peak current density increases with an increase in concentrations of PD and NaOH in the electrolyte. Repetitive cyclic voltammetry and amperometry studies indicate that Pd-PEDOT/C electrode possesses a high electrochemical stability with greater catalytic activity than Pd/C electrode toward electrooxidation of PD. We present a detailed study of a 3+2+1] cascade cyclisation of vinylcyclopropanes (VCP) catalysed by a bromenium species (Brd+?Xd-) generated in situ, which results in the synthesis of chiral bicyclic amidines in a tandem one-pot operation. The formation of amidines involves the ring-opening of VCPs with Br?X, followed by a Ritter-type reaction with chloramine-T and a tandem cyclisation. The reaction has been further extended to vinylcyclobutane systems and involves a 4+2+1] cascade cyclisation with the same reagents. The versatility of the methodology has been demonstrated by careful choice of VCPs and VCBs to yield bicyclo4.3.0]-, -4.3.1]- and -4.4.0]amidines in enantiomerically pure form. On the basis of the experimental observations and DFT calculations, a reasonable mechanism has been put forth to account for the formation of the products and the observed stereoselectivity. We propose the existence of a p-stabilised homoallylic carbocation at the cyclopropane carbon as the reason for high stereoselectivity. DFT studies at B3LYP/6-311+G** and M06-2X/6-31+G* levels of theory in gas-phase calculations suggest the ring-opening of VCP is initiated at the p-complex stage (between the double bond and Br?X). This can be clearly perceived from the solution-phase (acetonitrile) calculations using the polarisable continuum model (PCM) solvation model, from which the extent of the ring opening of VCP was found to be noticeably high. Studies also show that the formation of zero-bridge bicyclic amidines is favoured over other bridged bicyclic amidines. The energetics of competing reaction pathways is compared to explain the product selectivity.

Herein, a new aromatic carboxylate ligand, namely, 4-(dipyridin-2-yl)aminobenzoic acid (HL), has been designed and employed for the construction of a series of lanthanide complexes (Eu3+ = 1, Tb3+ = 2, and Gd3+ = 3). Complexes of 1 and 2 were structurally authenticated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and were found to exist as infinite 1D coordination polymers with the general formulas {Eu(L)(3)(H2O)(2)]}(n) (1) and {Tb(L)(3)(H2O)]center dot(H2O)}(n) (2). Both compounds crystallize in monoclinic space group C2/c. The photophysical properties demonstrated that the developed 4-(dipyridin-2-yl)aminobenzoate ligand is well suited for the sensitization of Tb3+ emission (Phi(overall) = 64%) thanks to the favorable position of the triplet state ((3)pi pi*) of the ligand the energy difference between the triplet state of the ligand and the excited state of Tb3+ (Delta E) = (3)pi pi* - D-5(4) = 3197 cm(-1)], as investigated in the Gd3+ complex. On the other hand, the corresponding Eu3+ complex shows weak luminescence efficiency (Phi(overall) = 7%) due to poor matching of the triplet state of the ligand with that of the emissive excited states of the metal ion (Delta E = (3)pi pi* - D-5(0) = 6447 cm(-1)). Furthermore, in the present work, a mixed lanthanide system featuring Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions with the general formula {Eu0.5Tb0.5(L)(3)(H2O)(2)]}(n) (4) was also synthesized, and the luminescent properties were evaluated and compared with those of the analogous single-lanthanide-ion systems (1 and 2). The lifetime measurements for 4 strongly support the premise that efficient energy transfer occurs between Tb3+ and Eu3+ in a mixed lanthanide system (eta = 86%).

The knowledge of adsorption characteristics of activated carbon (porous material) in the temperature range from 5 to 20 K is essential when used in cryosorption pumps for nuclear fusion applications. However, such experimental data are very scarce in the literature, especially below 77 K. So, an experimental system is designed and fabricated to measure the adsorption characteristics of porous materials under variable cryogenic temperatures (from 5 K to 100 K). This is based on the commercially available micropore-analyser coupled to a closed helium cycle two-stage Gifford McMahon (GM) Cryocooler, which allows the sample to be cooled to 4.2 K. The sample port is coupled to the Cryocooler through a heat switch, which isolates this port from the cold head of the Cryocooler. By this, the sample temperature can now be varied without affecting the Cryocooler. The setup enables adsorption studies in the pressure range from atmospheric down to 10(-4) Pa. The paper describes the details of the experimental setup and presents the results of adsorption studies at 77 K for activated carbon with nitrogen as adsorbate. The system integration is now completed to enable adsorption studies at 4.2 K.

Tert-butyl 2,2-bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)ethanoate was prepared from the ethanolic solution of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene, tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate and triethylamine. Acetyl group in tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate has cleaved off during the formation of the title molecule. UV-VIS, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Proton-Proton COSY data and single crystal XRD results support the proposed structure. Flammability test, impact sensitivity test and TG/DTA studies at different heating rates on the synthesized molecule imply that it is an insensitive high energy density material.

A short synthesis of thiosugar derivatives mimicking furanose, pyranose, and septanose structures has been achieved starting from L-gulono-1,4-lactone and D-glucoheptono-1,4-lactone. Different strategies used in the synthesis are: (1) a nucleophilic displacement and Michael addition; (2) epoxide ring opening and Michael addition; (3) epoxide ring opening and nucleophilic displacement process; and (4) double nucleophilic displacement. All of these reactions used benzyltriethylammonium tetrathiomolybdate, (BnEt3N)(2)MoS4 as the sulfur-transfer reagent.

Here, we report the ZnO/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) based photodetectors that can response to ultraviolet as well as visible light. The temporal response of the heterostructures for various excitations in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible range are performed. The time constants are found to be excitation-dependent, the response to visible light is better as compared to UV. The reason behind the better response to UV light is the high level of defects present in ZnO as confirmed by the photoluminescence (PL) measurements. This is corroborated by the time resolved fluorescence (TRF) measurements which provides sufficient information behind the slow response time under the UV excitations. The possible explanation being the non-radiative recombinations occurring due to the traps or impurities present in the film which slows down the photoresponse.
