An investigation into the potential losses of fish on the filter plates at the Hodder Water Treatment Works Stocks Reservoir

Stocks Reservoir is situated amidst the Forest of Bowland in the upper reaches of the old river valley of the Hodder. The reservoir was built in 1927 for the Fylde Water Board who primarily supplied water to Blackpool. The objective of this study is to assess the degree and likelihood of fish ingress onto the fish plates at the present and proposed stocking densities. An additional aim is to evaluate the operational implications, and if necessary suggest methods of alleviating the problem. Three spheres of study have been undertaken to achieve these objectives, these being: 1. To selectively stock the reservoir and monitor the angling club catches in order to assess the total population, relating it to fish plate losses and proposed stocking densities. 2. To monitor the fish taken from the fish plates and assess the reasons for their ingress. 3. To study the draw off tower and fish plates, and suggest ways of ameliorating or halting the loss of fish and consequent operational problems.

Influence of oxygen plasma treatment on properties of ZrO2 films prepared by e-beam evaporation techniques

Zirconia films were prepared by e-beam evaporation, and oxygen plasma treatment was used to modify film properties. Spectrophotometry, x-ray diffractometry (XRD), and atomic force microscopy were used to characterize refractive index, extinction coefficient, rnicrostructure, and surface roughness, respectively. The experimental results indicate that both refractive index and extinction coefficient of the films were reduced slightly after oxygen plasma treatment, with the decrease of intrinsic stress and surface roughness. From XRD spectra, the intensity decrease of the T(110) diffraction peak was clearly observed after the treatment, which was caused by the restructuring of the film atoms. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Influence of oxygen post-treatment on laser-induced damage of antireflection coatings prepared by electron-beam evaporation and ion beam assisted deposition

Antireflection coatings at the center wavelength of 1053 nm were prepared on BK7 glasses by electron-beam evaporation deposition (EBD) and ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD). Parts of the two kinds of samples were post-treated with oxygen plasma at the environment temperature after deposition. Absorption at 1064 nm was characterized based on surface thermal lensing (STL) technique. The laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) was measured by a 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser with a pulse width of 38 ps. Leica-DMRXE Microscope was applied to gain damage morphologies of samples. The results revealed that oxygen post-treatment could lower the absorption and increase the damage thresholds for both kinds of as-grown samples. However, the improving effects are not the same. This report examims the causes for its degradation, specific problems and their treatment, progress, plans and procedures, and benefits of restoration including species identified by English Nature as threatened or declining and which are listed in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.

Processo de acompanhamento de paciente portadores de feridas na atenção básica

Esta pesquisa tem como objeto de estudo a análise do processo de acompanhamento dos clientes portadores de feridas na atenção primária do município de Angra dos Reis. Os objetivos são: verificar a existência de processo de acompanhamento de clientes portadores de feridas nas unidades de atenção primária do município de Angra dos Reis; analisar as dificuldades inerentes ao processo de acompanhamento de clientes portadores de feridas nas unidades de atenção primária do município de Angra dos Reis. O método foi descritivo, o tipo é de levantamento e de natureza quantitativa. O instrumento de coleta de dados foi o formulário, tendo como sujeitos do estudo a população de enfermeiros atuantes na atenção primária do município de Angra dos Reis e que assinaram o Termo de Consentimento Livre e Esclarecido, conforme disposto na Resolução 196/96 do Conselho Nacional de saúde. O cenário utilizado foi o município de Angra dos Reis. A pesquisa foi aprovada pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa do Instituto de Medicina Social da UERJ, através da Plataforma Brasil em 28/06/2013. A análise demonstrou que mais de 93% dos enfermeiros realizam curativos durante sua atuação profissional na atenção primária, destes, 80% realizam algum tipo de acompanhamento de clientes portadores de feridas. Este acompanhamento nem sempre é contínuo, por contada dificuldade técnica do próprio profissional, da interrupção do fornecimento de materiais por parte do almoxarifado, da baixa adesão do cliente e da inexistência de uma rotina institucionalizada. A insuficiência de produtos disponíveis no município para a realização de curativos também foi um fator descrito pelos sujeitos como prejudicador no processo de acompanhamento destes pacientes. Foi verificado que a utilização de produtos de segunda geração para realização de curativos, quando indicados de forma correta e respeitando o prazo de troca, proporciona uma economia nos fastos do município no que se refere ao tratamento tópico de feridas, economia esta que pode chegar à metade dos gastos. Este estudo foi relevante para a otimização do processo de acompanhamento de clientes portadores de feridas no município, bem como reorganização defluxos, rotinas e do cuidado prestado.

Wastewater reuse in aquaculture: socially and environmentally appropriate wastewater treatment for Vietnam

Wastewater is reused and treated in four main types of farming in Vietnam: fish culture in 200 ha; rotation of rice and fish culture in 400 ha; land vegetables and aquatic vegetables.
