Several doped 6H hexagonal ruthenates, having the general formula Ba3MRu2O9, have been studied over a significant period of time to understand the unusual magnetism of ruthenium metal. However, among them, the M = Fe compound appears different since it is observed that unlike others, the 3d Fe ions and 4d Ru ions can easily exchange their crystallographic positions, and as a result many possible magnetic interactions become realizable. The present study involving several experimental methods on this compound establishes that the magnetic structure of Ba3FeRu2O9 is indeed very different from all other 6H ruthenates. Local structural study reveals that the possible Fe/Ru site disorder further extends to create local chemical inhomogeneity, affecting the high-temperature magnetism of this material. There is a gradual decrease of Fe-57 Mossbauer spectral intensity with decreasing temperature (below 100 K), which reveals that there is a large spread in the magnetic ordering temperatures, corresponding to many spatially inhomogeneous regions. However, finally at about 25 K, the whole compound is found to take up a global glasslike magnetic ordering.

A study of the deposition of aluminium oxide films by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapour deposition from the complex aluminium acetylacetonate, in the absence of an oxidant gas, has been carried out. Depositions on to Si(100), stainless steel, and TiN-coated cemented carbide are found to be smooth, shiny, and blackish. SIMS, XPS and TEM analyses reveal that films deposited at temperatures as low as 600 degreesC contain small crystallites Of kappa-Al2O3, embedded in an amorphous matrix rich in graphitic carbon. Optical and scanning electron microscopy reveal a surface morphology made up of spherulites that suggests that film growth might involve a melting process. A nucleation and growth mechanism, involving the congruent melting clusters of precursor molecules on the hot substrate surface, is therefore invoked to explain these observations. An effort has been made experimentally to verify this proposed mechanism. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Deposition of Al2O3 coatings by CVD is of importance because they are often used as abrading material in cemented carbide cutting tools. The conventionally used CVD process for Al2O3 involves the corrosive reactant AlCl3. In this paper, we report on the thermal characterisation of the metalorganic precursors namely aluminium tristetramethyl-heptanedionate [Al(thd)(3)] and aluminium tris-acetylacetonate [Al(acac)(3)] and their application to the CVD of Al2O3 films. Crystalline Al2O3 films were deposited by MOCVD at low temperatures by the pyrolysis of Al(thd)(3) and Al(acac)(3). The films were deposited on a TiN-coated tungsten carbide (TiN/WC) and Si(100) substrates in the temperature range 500-1100degreesC. The as-deposited films were characterised by x-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy. The observed crystallinity of films grown at low temperatures, their microstructure, and composition may be interpreted in terms of a growth process that involves the melting of the metalorganic precursor on the hot growth surface.

We have studied the insulator-superconductor transition (IST) by tuning the thickness in quench-condensed Bi films. The resistive transitions of the superconducting films are smooth and can be considered to represent ''homogeneous'' films. The observation of an IST very close to the quantum resistance for pairs R-square(N) similar to h/4e(2) on several substrates supports this idea. The relevant length scales here are the localization length, and the coherence length. However, at the transition, the localization length is much higher than the superconducting coherence length, contrary to expectation for a "homogeneous" transition. This suggests the invalidity of a purely fermionic model for the transition. Furthermore, the current-voltage characteristics of the superconducting films are hysteretic, and show the films to be granular. The relevant energy scales here are the Josephson coupling energy and the charging energy. However, Josephson coupling energies (E-J) and the charging energies (E-c) at the IST, they are found to obey the relation E-j < E-c. This is again contrary to expectation, for the IST in a granular or inhomogeneous system. Hence, a purely bosonic picture of the transition is also inconsistent with our observations. We conclude that the IST observed in our experiments may be either an intermediate case between the fermioinc and bosonic mechanisms, or in a regime of charge and vortex dynamics for which a quantitative analysis has not yet been done.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the steady state response of beams under the action of random support motions. The study is of relevance in the context of earthquake response of extended land based structures such as pipelines and long span bridges, and, secondary systems such as piping networks in nuclear power plant installations. The following complicating features are accounted for in the response analysis: (a) differential support motions: this is characterized in terms of cross power spectral density functions associated with distinct support motions, (b) nonlinear support conditions, and (c) stochastically inhomogeneous stiffness and mass variations of the beam structure; questions on non-Gaussian models for these variations are considered. The method of stochastic finite elements is combined with equivalent linearization technique and Monte Carlo simulations to obtain response moments.

The occurrence of segregation and its influence on microstructural and phase evolution have been studied in MgO–MgAl2O4 powders synthesized by thermal decomposition of aqueous nitrate precursors. When the nitrate solutions of Mg and Al were spray-pyrolyzed on a substrate held at 673 or 573 K, homogeneous mixed oxides were produced. Spraying and drying the nitrate solutions at 473 K resulted in the formation of compositionally inhomogeneous, segregated oxide mixtures. It is suggested that segregation in the dried powders was caused by the difference in solubility of the individual nitrate salts in water which caused Mg-rich and Al-rich salts to precipitate during dehydration of the solutions. The occurrence of segregation in the powders sprayed at 473 K and not 573 or 673 K is ascribed to the sluggish rate at which the early stages of decomposition occurred during which the cations segregated. The phase evolution in segregated and segregation-free MgO–MgAl2O4 powders has been compared. The distinguishing feature of the segregated powders was the appearance of stoichiometric periclase grain dimensions in excess of 0.3 μm at temperatures as low as 973 K. By comparison, the segregation-free powders displayed broad diffraction peaks corresponding to fine-grained and nonstoichiometric periclase. The grain size was in the range 5–30 nm at temperatures up to 1173 K. The key to obtaining fine-grained periclase was the ability to synthesize (Mg Al)O solid solutions with the rock salt structure. In the temperature range 973–1173 K, spinel grain size varied from 5 to 40 nm irrespective of its composition and did not appear to be influenced by segregation.

Deposition of durable thin film coatings by vacuum evaporation on acrylic substrates for optical applications is a challenging job. Films crack upon deposition due to internal stresses and leads to performance degradation. In this investigation, we report the preparation and characterization of single and multi-layer films of TiO2, CeO2, Substance2 (E Merck, Germany), Al2O3, SiO2 and MgF2 by electron beam evaporation on both glass and PMMA substrates. Optical micrographs taken on single layer films deposited on PMMA substrates did not reveal any cracks. Cracks in films were observed on PMMA substrates when the substrate temperature exceeded 80degreesC. Antireflection coatings of 3 and 4 layers have been deposited and characterized. Antireflection coatings made on PMMA substrate using Substance2 (H2) and SiO2 combination showed very fine cracks when observed under microscope. Optical performance of the coatings has been explained with the help of optical micrographs.

Yttrium oxide (Y(2)O(3)) thin films were deposited by microwave electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma assisted metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) process using indigenously developed metal organic precursors Yttrium 2,7,7-trimethyl-3,5-octanedionates, commonly known as Y(tod)(3) which were synthesized by an ultrasound method. A series of thin films were deposited by varying the oxygen flow rate from 1-9 sccm, keeping all other parameters constant. The deposited coatings were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, glancing angle X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Thickness and roughness for the films were measured by stylus profilometry. Optical properties of the coatings were studied by the spectroscopic ellipsometry. Hardness and elastic modulus of the films were measured by nanoindentation technique. Being that microwave ECR CVD process is operating-pressure-sensitive, optimum oxygen activity is very essential for a fixed flow rate of precursor, in order to get a single phase cubic yttrium oxide in the films. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort that describes the use of Y(tod)(3) precursor for deposition of Y(2)O(3) films using plasma assisted CVD process.

Silicon oxide films were deposited by reactive evaporation of SiO. Parameters such as oxygen partial pressure and substrate temperature were varied to get variable and graded index films. Films with a refractive index in the range 1.718 to 1.465 at 550 nm have been successfully deposited. Films deposited using ionized oxygen has the refractive index 1.465 at 550 nm and good UV transmittance like bulk fused quartz. Preparation of graded index films was also investigated by changing the oxygen partial pressure during deposition. A two layer antireflection coating at 1064nm has been designed using both homogeneous and inhomogeneous films and studied their characteristics.

The electrical transport properties of InN/GaN heterostructure based Schottky junctions were studied over a wide temperature range of 200-500 K. The barrier height and the ideality factor were calculated from current-voltage (I-V) characteristics based on thermionic emission (TE), and found to be temperature dependent. The barrier height was found to increase and the ideality factor to decrease with increasing temperature. The observed temperature dependence of the barrier height indicates that the Schottky barrier height is inhomogeneous in nature at the heterostructure interface. Such inhomogeneous behavior was modeled by assuming the existence of a Gaussian distribution of barrier heights at the heterostructure interface. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Arrays of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been proposed for different applications, including electrochemical energy storage and shock-absorbing materials. Understanding their mechanical response, in relation to their structural characteristics, is important for tailoring the synthesis method to the different operational conditions of the material. In this paper, we grow vertically aligned CNT arrays using a thermal chemical vapor deposition system, and we study the effects of precursor flow on the structural and mechanical properties of the CNT arrays. We show that the CNT growth process is inhomogeneous along the direction of the precursor flow, resulting in varying bulk density at different points on the growth substrate. We also study the effects of non-covalent functionalization of the CNTs after growth, using surfactant and nanoparticles, to vary the effective bulk density and structural arrangement of the arrays. We find that the stiffness and peak stress of the materials increase approximately linearly with increasing bulk density.

The statistically steady humidity distribution resulting from an interaction of advection, modelled as an uncorrelated random walk of moist parcels on an isentropic surface, and a vapour sink, modelled as immediate condensation whenever the specific humidity exceeds a specified saturation humidity, is explored with theory and simulation. A source supplies moisture at the deep-tropical southern boundary of the domain and the saturation humidity is specified as a monotonically decreasing function of distance from the boundary. The boundary source balances the interior condensation sink, so that a stationary spatially inhomogeneous humidity distribution emerges. An exact solution of the Fokker-Planck equation delivers a simple expression for the resulting probability density function (PDF) of the wate-rvapour field and also the relative humidity. This solution agrees completely with a numerical simulation of the process, and the humidity PDF exhibits several features of interest, such as bimodality close to the source and unimodality further from the source. The PDFs of specific and relative humidity are broad and non-Gaussian. The domain-averaged relative humidity PDF is bimodal with distinct moist and dry peaks, a feature which we show agrees with middleworld isentropic PDFs derived from the ERA interim dataset. We recast the reconstruction problem of diffuse optical tomography (DOT) in a pseudo-dynamical framework and develop a method to recover the optical parameters using particle filters, i.e., stochastic filters based on Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we have implemented two such filters, viz., the bootstrap (BS) filter and the Gaussian-sum (GS) filter and employed them to recover optical absorption coefficient distribution from both numerically simulated and experimentally generated photon fluence data. Using either indicator functions or compactly supported continuous kernels to represent the unknown property distribution within the inhomogeneous inclusions, we have drastically reduced the number of parameters to be recovered and thus brought the overall computation time to within reasonable limits. Even though the GS filter outperformed the BS filter in terms of accuracy of reconstruction, both gave fairly accurate recovery of the height, radius, and location of the inclusions. Since the present filtering algorithms do not use derivatives, we could demonstrate accurate contrast recovery even in the middle of the object where the usual deterministic algorithms perform poorly owing to the poor sensitivity of measurement of the parameters. Consistent with the fact that the DOT recovery, being ill posed, admits multiple solutions, both the filters gave solutions that were verified to be admissible by the closeness of the data computed through them to the data used in the filtering step (either numerically simulated or experimentally generated). The role of homogeneity in ex situ grown conductive coatings and dimensionality in the lithium storage properties of TiO(2) is discussed here. TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet comprising of mixed crystallographic phases of anatase and TiO(2) (B) have been synthesized by an optimized hydrothermal method. Surface modifications of TiO(2) nanotube are realized via coating the nanotube with Ag nanoparticles and amorphous carbon. The first discharge cycle capacity (at current rate = 10 mA g(-1)) for TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet were 355 mAh g(-1) and 225 mAhg(-1), respectively. The conductive surface coating stabilized the titania crystallographic structure during lithium insertion-deinsertion processes via reduction in the accessibility of lithium ions to the trapping sites. The irreversible capacity is beneficially minimized from 110 mAh g(-1) for TiO(2) nanotubes to 96 mAh g(-1) and 57 mAhg(-1) respectively for Ag and carbon modified TiO(2) nanotubes. The homogeneously coated amorphous carbon over TiO(2) renders better lithium battery performance than randomly distributed Ag nanoparticles coated TiO(2) due to efficient hopping of electrons.
