Blends of nylon-6 and epoxidised ethylene propylene diene (eEPDM) rubber were prepared through reactive mixing. It is found that the toughness of nylon-6 can be much improved by this method, and that the particle size of eEPDM is much smaller than that of unexpoxidised EPDM (uEPDM) rubber in a nylon-6 matrix. This indicates that the epoxy group in eEPDM could react with a nylon-6 end group to form a graft copolymer which could act as an interfacial compatibiliser between the nylon-6 and the eEPDM rubber dispersed phase. The morphology and properties of [ PPO-PDMS-PHS](n) segmented ternary copolymers were investigated by DMA, TEM and SAXS techniques. It is shown that the continuous phase of [PPO-PDMS-PHS](n) is the compatible phase composed of PDMS, PPO and PHS segments, and that there exist two dispersed phases, i, e. the PDMS phase and a mixed phase of half hard ( PHS) and hard ( PPO) segments. The tan delta vs. T curve of the segmented ternary copolymer with 66.7% (W/W) PDMS shows a rather high plateau in the temperature range from -120 degrees C to 200 degrees C, which indicates that the copolymer has the characteristics of microphase separation as well as compatibility of block copolymers, respectively. Meanwhile, it has good tensile properties, which means that [PPO-PDMS-PHS](n) has overcome the weakness of low strength of block or segmented copolymers containing PDMS.

The isothermal crystallization process of a PCL/SAN blend (90/10 wt.-%) was investigated by using real time image analysis and hot stage optical microscopy. It was found that the growth rate of ring-banded spherulites in the isothermal crystallization process is not constant. Slow growth occurs in the bright bands, while fast growth is found in the dark bands. The radially unequal growth rate of ring-banded spherulites in PCL/SAN blends may be related to the convex band structure on the surface. This new discovery gives us the idea that rhythmic growth is effective in the growth process of ring banded spherulites.

Blends of chromophore-labeled LLDPE and chromophore-labeled PMMA compatibilized by block copolymer of hydrogenated polybutadiene and methyl methacrylate (PHB-b-PMMA) were studied by nonradiative energy transfer (NRET) technique. The ratio of fluorescence intensity of the donor at 336 nm and the acceptor at 408 nm (I-D/I-A) decreased with an increase in block copolymer content. At about 8 wt.-% block copolymer content I-D/I-A reached a minimum value, indicating the interdiffusion of LLDPE chains and PMMA chains in the interface is strongest. The influence of temperature on the interdiffusion of polymer chains in the interface was also examined. Samples quenched in liquid nitrogen from 140 degrees C showed lower energy transfer efficiencies than those annealed from 150 degrees C to room temperature.

A novel rare earth coordination system composed of lanthanide trifluoroacetates Ln(CF3COO)(3) (Ln = Y, Yb, Nd, Tm, Ho, La, Pr) and triisobutylaluminium Al(i-Bu)(3) was used as catalyst for the polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (CL), D,L-lactide (DLLA) and their copolymerization. The influence of temperature, time and catalyst concentration on polymerization yields and molecular weights of the polyesters have been studied. It was shown that the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters catalysed by Ln(CF3COO)(3)/Al(i-Bu)(3) has some living character and the molecular weight of the polyester could be controlled by adjusting the molar ratio of monomer to catalyst. The DLLA/CL copolymer was synthesized by sequential addition of monomers and the structure of the copolyester was characterized by GPC, NMR and DSC. (C) 1998 SCI.

Compatibilization of blends of polybutadiene and poly(methyl methacrylate) with butadiene-methyl methacrylate diblock copolymers has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. When the diblock copolymers are added to the blends, the size of PB particles decreases and their size distribution gets narrower. In PB/PMMA7.6K blends with P(B-b-MMA)25.2K as a compatibilizer, most of micelles exist in the PMMA phase. However, using P(B-b-MMA)38K as a compatibilizer, the micellar aggregation exists in PB particles besides that existing in the PMMA phase. The core of a micelle in the PMMA phase is about 10 nm. In this article the influences of temperature and homo-PMMA molecular weight on compatibilization were also examined. At a high temperature PB particles in blends tend to agglomerate into bigger particles. When the molecular weight of PMMA is close to that of the corresponding block of the copolymer, the best compatibilization result would be achieved. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Effects of the compatibilizer polypropylene grafted with glycidyl methacrylate(PP-g-GMA) on the morphology, thermal, rheological and mechanical properties of polypropylene and polycarbonate blends (PP/PC) were studied. It was found that the addition of PP-g-GMA significantly changed their morphology. The mean size of domains reduced from 20 mu m to less than 5 mu m. The dispersed domain size is also strongly dependent upon the content of PP-g-GMA. The interfacial tension of PP/PC/PP-g-GMA (50/30/20) is only about one-tenth of PP/PC (70/30). The crystallization temperature of PP in PP/PC/PP-g-GMA is 5-8 degrees C higher than that of PP in PP/PC blends. Characterization studies based on mechanical properties, differential scanning calorimetry, rheology and morphological evidence obtained by using scanning electron microscopy support the hypothesis that an in-situ copolymer PP-g-PC was formed during the blending process. Crystallization behavior of the single-site catalysed ethylene-octene-1 copolymer (LLDPE) has been investigated. The results indicate that the distribution of branches in the novel LLDPE is more homogeneous and regular than that in materials prepared with Ziegler-Natta catalysts. However, there is still some variability in inter-branch separation. The work has confirmed that branches trend to be excluded from crystals formed by branched polyethylene, but it is dependent on branch distribution and crystallization dynamics.

We synthesized a series of polymers: poly(ether ether ketone ketone)(PEEKK), poly(ether biphenyl ether ketone ketone) (PEBEKK) and their copolymer by polycondensation, We also prepared a series of PEEKK-PEBEKK blends, By using DSC method, we found that T-g of the copolymers and the blends rose with the increasing of biphenyl contents in the polymers, T-c of the copolymers and the blends is higher than the corresponding homopolymer. From the results, we think that PEEKK-PEBEKK copolymer and blends are miscible and the copolymer is random.

Morphological studies of a series of propylene/ethylene sequential polymers have been carried out by permanganic etching and transmission electron microscopy, as an aid to characterization, in conjunction with differential scanning calorimetry. The materials were synthesized using a titanium-based catalyst, with propylene and either ethylene or ethylene/propylene mixture introduced successively, with the aim of examining whether a proportion of block copolymer is obtained. These materials show a complicated phase structure which does not simply reflect polymerization time but varies greatly, especially in regard to the order of introduction of the monomers, and their morphology differs in a number of ways from that of typical commercial materials. Comparison of the materials, as synthesized and after extraction with heptane, suggests that there is a certain amount of material which can compatibilize polypropylene- and ethylene-rich phases, but it was not possible to decide whether it does in fact have block structure.

The thermal behaviour and ion-transport properties of a comb polymer electrolyte CP350/LiSCN based on methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer with oligo-oxyethylene side chains were studied by means of DSC and ac impedance method. The two glass transition temperatures which can be attributed to side chains and main chains respectively were found to increase with increasing salt concentration. Conductivities which displayed non-Arrhenius behaviour were analyzed by using Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation and interpreted on the basis of the configurational entropy model derived by Gibbs and coworkers. The optimum ionic conductivity at 25 degrees C achieved was 2.19x10(-5)S/cm.

In this paper, unepoxidized ethylene propylene diene rubber (uEPDM) was first epoxidized with formic acid and H2O2, and then the epoxidized ethylene propylene diene rubber (eEPDM) was melt-mixed with PET resin in a Brabender-like apparatus. Toughening of PET matrix was achieved by this method. The dispersion of rubber particles and phase structure of the blends were also observed by SEM. It has been suggested that the epoxy groups in the eEPDM could react with PET end groups to form a graft copolymer which could act as an interfacial compatibilizer between the PBT matrix and eEPDM rubber dispersed phase. This is beneficial to the improvement of the impact performance of PBT. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

A comb polymer (CP350) with oligo-oxyethylene side chains of the type -(CH2CH2O)(7)CH3 was prepared from methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether. The polymer can dissolve LiNO3 salt to form homogeneous amorphous polymer electrolyte. This electrolyte system was first found to have two class glass transitions, and the two T(g)s were observed to increase with increasing salt content. The ionic conduction was measured by using the complex impedance method, and conductivities were investigated as functions of temperature and salt concentration. At 25 degrees C, the ionic conductivity maximum of this system can get to 3.72 X 10(-5) S/cm at the [Li]/ [EO] ratio of 0.057. The appearance of the conductivity maximum has been interpreted as being due to the effect of T-g and the so called physical crosslinks. The temperature dependence of the ionic conductivity displaying non-Arrhenius behaviour can be analyzed using the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation and interpreted on the basis of the configurational entropy model.

A new amorphous comblike polymer (CBP) based on methylvinyl ether/maleic anhydride altering copolymer backbone and on oligooxyethylene side chain was synthesized. The dynamic mechanical properties of CBP and its Li salt complexes were investigated by means of DDV-11-EA type viscoelastic spectrometry. Results showed that there were two glass transitions (alpha-transition and beta-transition) in the temperature range from -100 to 100 degrees C. The beta-transition was assigned to oligo-PEO side chains and the temperature of beta-transition increases with increasing Li salt content. The alpha-transition was assigned to the main chain of CBP. The temperature of the alpha-transition (T-alpha) is also dependent upon the Li-salt content, but not monotonic. The value of T-alpha lies between 30-45 degrees C in the Li salt concentration range studied, near room temperature. It was found that the CBP-Li salt complexes showed an unusual dependence of ionic conductivity on Li salt content. There are two peaks in the plot of the ionic conductivity vs. Li salt concentration, which has been ascribed to the movability of the CBP main chain at ambient temperature. The temperature dependence bf the ionic conductivity indicated that the Arrhenius relationship was not obeyed, and the plot of log sigma against 1/(T - T-0) showed the unusual dual VTF behavior when using side chain glass transition temperature (T-beta) as T-0.

Three comb polymers(CP) with oligo-oxyethylene side chains of the type -O(CH2CH2O)(n)CH3 were prepared from methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride alternating copolymer. Homogeneous amorphous polymer electrolytes were made from CP and LiCF3SO3 or LiClO4 by solvent-casting method, and their conductivities were measured as a function of temperature and salt concentration. The conductivity which displayed non-Arrhenius behaviour was analyzed using the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation. The conductivity maximum appears at lower salt concentration when CP has longer side chains. XPS was used to study the cation-polymer interaction.
