The composition, structural, electrical, and optical properties of as-grown and heat treated tin-mono-sulfide (SnS) ultra-thin films have been studied. The ultra-thin SnS films were prepared on glass substrates by thermal resistive evaporation technique. All the SnS films contained nanocrystallites and exhibited p-type conductivity with a low Hall-mobility, <50 cm(2)/Vs. All these films are highly tin rich in nature and exhibited orthorhombic crystal structure. As compared to other films, the SnS films annealed at 300 degrees C showed a low electrical resistivity of similar to 36 Omega cm with an optical band gap of similar to 1.98 eV. The observed electrical and optical properties of all the films are discussed based on their composition and structural parameters. These nanocrystalline ultra-thin SnS films could be expected as a buffer layer for the development of tandem solar cell devices due to their low-resistivity and high absorbability with an optimum band gap. In order to understand the influence of ductile metal interlayer on the overall deformation behavior of metal/nitride multilayer, different configurations of metal and nitride layers were deposited and tested under indentation loading. To provide insight into the trends in deformation with multilayer spacings, an FEM model with elastic-perfect plastic metal layers alternate with an elastic nitride on top of an elastic-plastic substrate. The strong strain mismatch between the metal and nitride layers significantly alters the stress field under contact loading leading to micro-cracking in the nitride, large tensile stresses immediately below the contact, and a transition from columnar sliding in thin metal films to a more uniform bending and microcracking in thicker coatings.

Thin films of (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 - xPbTiO(3) (x = 0.1 to 0.3)(PMN-PT) were deposited on the platinum coated silicon substrate by pulsed excimer laser ablation technique. A template layer of LaSr0.5Co0.5O3 (LSCO) was deposited on platinum substrate prior to the deposition of PMN-PT thin films. The composition and the structure of the films were modulated via proper variation of the deposition parameter such as substrate temperature, laser fluence and thickness of the template layers. We observed the impact of the thickness of LSCO template layer on the orientation of the films. A room temperature dielectric constant varying from 2000 to 4500 was noted for different composition of the films. The dielectric properties of the films were studied over the frequency range of 100 Hz - 100 kHz over a wide range of temperatures. The films exhibited the relaxor- type behavior that was characterized by the frequency dispersion of the temperature of dielectric constant maxima (T-m) and also diffuse phase transition. The crystallographic structure and compositional variation were confirmed with x-ray diffraction and energy diffraction x-ray (EDX) analysis. A room temperature dielectric constant varying from 2000 to 4500 was noted for different composition of the films. The dielectric properties of the films were studied over the frequency range of 100 Hz - 100 kHz over a wide range of temperatures. The films exhibited the relaxor-type behavior that was characterized by the frequency dispersion of the temperature of dielectric constant maxima (Tm) and also diffuse phase transition. This relaxor nature in PMN-PT thin films was attributed to freezing of the dipole moment, which takes place below a certain temperature. This phenomenon was found to be very similar to spin glass system, where spins are observed to freeze after certain temperature.

In the present study dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been fabricated with a tri-layer photo anode consisting of hydrothermally prepared titania nano tubes (TNT) having a diameter of 9-10 nm and length of several micrometers as outer layer, P25 TiO2 powder as transparent light absorbing middle layer and a compact TiO2 inner layer to improve the adhesion of different layers on a transparent conducting oxide coated substrate. In comparison to cells fabricated using TNTs or P25 alone, the tri-layer DSSCs exhibit an enhanced efficiency of 7.15% with a current density of 17.12 mA cm(-2) under AM 1.5 illumination. The enhancement is attributed to the light scattering generated by TNTs aggregates, reduction in electron transport resistance at the TiO2/dye/electrolyte interface and an improvement in electron life-time. In this paper, the influence of nickel incorporation on the mechanical properties and the in vitro bioactivity of hydrogenated carbon thin films were investigated in detail. Amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C : H) and nickel-incorporated hydrogenated carbon (Ni/a-C : H) thin films were deposited onto the Si substrates by using reactive biased target ion beam deposition technique. The films' chemical composition, surface roughness, microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated by using XPS, AFM, TEM, nanoindentation and nanoscratch test, respectively. XPS results have shown that the film surface is mainly composed of nickel, nickel oxide and nickel hydroxide, whereas at the core is nickel carbide (Ni3C) only. The presence of Ni3C has increased the sp(2) carbon content and as a result, the mechanical hardness of the film was decreased. However, Ni/a-C : H films shows very low friction coefficient with higher scratch-resistance behavior than that of pure a-C : H film. In addition, in vitro bioactivity study has confirmed that it is possible to grow dense bone-like apatite layer on Ni/a-C : H films. Thus, the results have indicated the suitability of the films for bone-related implant coating applications. Copyright (C) 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Metal-ion- (Ag, Co, Ni and Pd) doped titania nanocatalysts were successfully deposited on glass slides by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique using a poly(styrene sulfonate sodium salt) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) polyelectrolyte system. Solid diffuse reflectance (SDR) studies showed a linear increase in absorbance at 416 nm with increase in the number of m-TiO2 thin films. The LbL assembled thin films were tested for their photocatalytic activity through the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible-light illumination. From the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the thin films had a porous morphology and the atomic force microscope (AFM) studies showed ``rough'' surfaces. The porous and rough surface morphology resulted in high surface areas hence the high photocatalytic degradation (up to 97% over a 6.5 h irradiation period) using visible-light observed. Increasing the number of multilayers deposited on the glass slides resulted in increased film thickness and an increased rate of photodegradation due to increase in the availability of more nanocatalysts (more sites for photodegradation). The LbL assembled thin films had strong adhesion properties which made them highly stable thus displaying the same efficiencies after five (5) reusability cycles.

Densely packed nanoparticles distributed in a stable and robust thin film is a highly preferred system for utilizing the various applications of nanoparticles. Here, we report covalent bond mediated layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembled thin films of nanoparticles embedded in polymer membrane. Polymer with complementary functional group is utilized for fabrication of thin film via covalent bonding. UV-visible spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to monitor the growth of LbL thin film. Subsequently, the composite thin film is used for catalysis of an organic electron transfer reaction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol by sodium borohydride. The catalytic activity of these composite films is assayed multiple times, proving its applicability as a catalyst. The kinetic data obtained by monitoring reduction of p-nitrophenol suggest that the reaction rates are directly related to the sizes of the nanoparticle and porosity of the membrane.

We report on the threshold voltage modeling of ultra-thin (1 nm-5 nm) silicon body double-gate (DG) MOSFETs using self-consistent Poisson-Schrodinger solver (SCHRED). We define the threshold voltage (V th) of symmetric DG MOSFETs as the gate voltage at which the center potential (Φ c) saturates to Φ c (s a t), and analyze the effects of oxide thickness (t ox) and substrate doping (N A) variations on V th. The validity of this definition is demonstrated by comparing the results with the charge transition (from weak to strong inversion) based model using SCHRED simulations. In addition, it is also shown that the proposed V t h definition, electrically corresponds to a condition where the inversion layer capacitance (C i n v) is equal to the oxide capacitance (C o x) across a wide-range of substrate doping densities. A capacitance based analytical model based on the criteria C i n v C o x is proposed to compute Φ c (s a t), while accounting for band-gap widening. This is validated through comparisons with the Poisson-Schrodinger solution. Further, we show that at the threshold voltage condition, the electron distribution (n(x)) along the depth (x) of the silicon film makes a transition from a strong single peak at the center of the silicon film to the onset of a symmetric double-peak away from the center of the silicon film. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Bilayer thin films of Bi/As2S3 were prepared from Bi and As2S3 by thermal evaporation technique under high vacuum. We have prepared three bilayer films of 905nm, 910nm and 915nm thickness with with As2S3 as bottom layer (900nm) and Bi as top layer (5,10,15 nm). We have compared the optical changes due to the thickness variation of Bi layer on As2S3 film. The changes were characterized by FTIR and XPS techniques.

We report on the novel flow sensing application of piezoelectric ZnO thin film deposited on Phynox alloy sensing element. Characterization of piezoelectric ZnO films deposited on Phynox (Elgiloy) substrate at different RF powers is discussed. ZnO films deposited at RF power of 100W were found to have fine c-axis orientation, possesses excellent surface morphology with lower rms surface roughness of 1.87 nm and maximum d(31) coefficient value 4.7 pm V-1. The thin cantilever strip of Phynox alloy with ZnO film as a sensing layer for flow sensing has been tested for flow rates ranging from 2 to 18 L min(-1). A detailed theoretical analysis of the experimental set-up showing the relationship between output voltage and force at a particular flow rate has been discussed. The sensitivity of now sensing element is similar to 18 mV/(L min(-1)) and typical response time is of the order of 20 m s. The sensing element is calibrated using in-house developed testing set-up. The role of Bi layer (thickness similar to 7 nm) on As2S3 film was extensively studied for different optical applications in which Bi (top layer) as active and diffusing layer and As2S3 as barrier (matrix) layer. Bilayer thin films of Bi/As2S3 were prepared from Bi and As2S3 by thermal evaporation technique under high vacuum. The decrease of optical band gap with the addition of Bi to As2S3 has been explained on the basis of density of states and the increase in disorder in the system. It was found that the efficient changes of optical parameters (transmission, optical band gap, refraction) could be realized due to the photo induced diffusion activated by the focused 532 nm laser irradiation and formation of different bonds. The diffusion of Bi into As2S3 matrix increases the optical band gap producing photo bleaching effect. The changes were characterised by different experimental techniques. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. We investigated the structural and magnetic properties of SmCo5/Co exchange coupled nanocomposite thin films grown by magnetron sputtering from Sm and Co multitargets successively. The growth of the films was carried out at elevated substrate temperature followed by in situ annealing. On Si (100) substrate, X-ray diffraction confirms the formation of textured (110) SmCo5 hard phase, whereas on MgO (110) substrate, the diffraction pattern shows the epitaxial growth of SmCo5 phase with crystalline orientation along 100] direction. Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy reveals the structural transformation from multilayered (Sm/Co) to SmCo5/Co nano-composite films due to high reactivity of Sm at elevated temperature. Transmission electron microscopy indicates the existence of nanocrystalline phase of SmCo5 along with unreacted Co. Observed single phase behavior in magnetic hysteresis measurements indicates well exchange coupling between the soft and the hard phases in these nano-composite films. For samples with samarium layer thickness, t(sm)=3.2 nm and cobalt layer thickness, t(Co)= 11.4 nm, the values of (BH)(max) were obtained as 20.1 MGOe and 12.38 MGOe with H-c value similar to 3.0 kOe grown on MgO and Si substrates, respectively.

Thin films of NiTi were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering from an equiatomic alloy target (Ni/Ti: 50/50 at.%). The films were deposited without intentional heating of the substrates. The thickness of the deposited films was approximately 2 mu m. The structure and morphology of NiTi films annealed at different temperatures were analyzed in order to understand the effect of annealing on physical properties of the films. The compositional investigations of fresh and annealed films were also evaluated by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies showed that as-deposited films were amorphous in nature whereas annealed films were found to poly-crystalline with the presence of Austenite phase as the dominant phase. AFM investigations showed higher grain size and surface roughness values in the annealed films. In annealed films, the grain size and film roughness values were increased from 10 to 85 nm and 2-18 nm. Film composition measured by EDS were found to 52.5 atomic percent of Ni and 47.5 atomic percent of Ti. XPS investigations, demonstrated the presence of Ni content on the surface of the films, in fresh films, whereas annealed films did not show any nickel. From HR-XPS investigations, it can be concluded that annealed NiTi films have higher tendency to form metal oxide (titanium dioxide) layer on the surface of the films than fresh NiTi films. We report on the design, development, and performance study of a packaged piezoelectric thin film impact sensor, and its potential application in non-destructive material discrimination. The impact sensing element employed was a thin circular diaphragm of flexible Phynox alloy. Piezoelectric ZnO thin film as an impact sensing layer was deposited on to the Phynox alloy diaphragm by RF reactive magnetron sputtering. Deposited ZnO thin film was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques. The d(31) piezoelectric coefficient value of ZnO thin film was 4.7 pm V-1, as measured by 4-point bending method. ZnO film deposited diaphragm based sensing element was properly packaged in a suitable housing made of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) material. Packaged impact sensor was used in an experimental set-up, which was designed and developed in-house for non-destructive material discrimination studies. Materials of different densities (iron, glass, wood, and plastic) were used as test specimens for material discrimination studies. The analysis of output voltage waveforms obtained reveals lots of valuable information about the impacted material. Impact sensor was able to discriminate the test materials on the basis of the difference in their densities. The output response of packaged impact sensor shows high linearity and repeatability. The packaged impact sensor discussed in this paper is highly sensitive, reliable, and cost-effective.
