Grid connected PWM-VSIs are being increasingly used for applications such as Distributed Generation (DG), power quality, UPS etc. Appropriate control strategies for grid synchronisation and line current regulation are required to establish such a grid interconnection and power transfer. Control of three phase VSIs is widely reported in iterature. Conventionally, dq control in Synchronous Reference Frame(SRF) is employed for both PLL and line current control where PI-controllers are used to track the DC references. Single phase systems do not have defined direct (d) and quadrature (q) axis components that are required for SRF transformation. Thus, references are AC in nature and hence usage of PI controllers cannot yield zero steady state errors. Resonant controllers have the ability to track AC references accurately. In this work, a resonant controller based single phase PLL and current control technique are being employed for tracking grid frequency and the AC current reference respectively. A single phase full bridge converter is being operated as a STATCOM for performance evaluation of the control scheme.

A linear state feedback gain vector used in the control of a single input dynamical system may be constrained because of the way feedback is realized. Some examples of feedback realizations which impose constraints on the gain vector are: static output feedback, constant gain feedback for several operating points of a system, and two-controller feedback. We consider a general class of problems of stabilization of single input dynamical systems with such structural constraints and give a numerical method to solve them. Each of these problems is cast into a problem of solving a system of equalities and inequalities. In this formulation, the coefficients of the quadratic and linear factors of the closed-loop characteristic polynomial are the variables. To solve the system of equalities and inequalities, a continuous realization of the gradient projection method and a barrier method are used under the homotopy framework. Our method is illustrated with an example for each class of control structure constraint.

Local texture and microstructure was investigated to study the deformation mechanisms during equal channel angular extrusion of a high purity nickel single crystal of initial cube orientation. A detailed texture and microstructure analysis by various diffraction techniques revealed the complexity of the deformation patterns in different locations of the billet. A modeling approach, taking into account slip system activity, was used to interpret the development of this heterogeneous deformation.

Nanoclusters are objects made up of several to thousands of atoms and form a transitional state of matter between single atoms and bulk materials. Due to their large surface-to-volume ratio, nanoclusters exhibit exciting and yet poorly studied size dependent properties. When deposited directly on bare metal surfaces, the interaction of the cluster with the substrate leads to alteration of the cluster properties, making it less or even non-functional. Surfaces modified with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were shown to form an interesting alternative platform, because of the possibility to control wettability by decreasing the surface reactivity and to add functionalities to pre-formed nanoclusters. In this thesis, the underlying size effects and the influence of the nanocluster environment are investigated. The emphasis is on the structural and magnetic properties of nanoclusters and their interaction with thiol SAMs. We report, for the first time, a ferromagnetic-like spin-glass behaviour of uncapped nanosized Au islands tens of nanometres in size. The flattening kinetics of the nanocluster deposition on thiol SAMs are shown to be mediated mainly by the thiol terminal group, as well as the deposition energy and the particle size distribution. On the other hand, a new mechanism for the penetration of the deposited nanoclusters through the monolayers is presented, which is fundamentally different from those reported for atom deposition on alkanethiols. The impinging cluster is shown to compress the thiol layer against the Au surface and subsequently intercalate at the thiol-Au interface. The compressed thiols try then to straighten and push the cluster away from the surface. Depending on the cluster size, this restoring force may or may not enable a covalent cluster-surface bond formation, giving rise to various cluster-surface binding patterns. Compression and straightening of the thiol molecules pinpoint the elastic nature of the SAMs, which has been investigated in this thesis using nanoindentation. The nanoindenation method has been applied to SAMs of varied tail groups, giving insight into the mechanical properties of thiol modified metal surfaces.

Infrared spectroscopy provides a valuable tool to investigate the spin-state transition in Fe(II) complexes of the type Fe(Phen)2(NCS)2. With progressive substitution of Fe by Mn, the first-order transition changes over to a second-order transition, with a high residual population of the high-spin state even at very low temperatures

We report a single C-13 spin edited selective proton-proton correlation experiment to decipher overcrowded 13C coupled proton NMR spectra of weakly dipolar coupled spin systems. The experiment unravels the masked C-13 satellites in proton spectrum and permits the measurement of one bond carbon-proton residual dipolar couplings in I3S and for each diastereotopic proton in I2S groups. It also provides all the possible homonuclear proton-proton residual couplings which are otherwise difficult to extract from the broad and featureless one dimensional H-1 spectrum, in addition to enantiodifferentiation in a chiral molecule. Employment of heteronuclear (C-13) decoupling in the evolution period results in complete demixing of overlapped signals from enantiomers. The observed anomalous intensity pattern in strongly dipolar coupled methyl protons in methyl selective correlation experiment has been interpreted using polarization operator formalism. Separated Local Field (SLF) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the determination of structure and dynamics of oriented systems such as membrane proteins oriented in lipid bilayers and liquid crystals. Of many SLF techniques available, Polarization Inversion Spin Exchange at Magic Angle (PISEMA) has found wide application due to its many favorable characteristics. However the pulse sequence suffers from its sensitivity to proton resonance frequency offset. Recently we have proposed a new sequence named 2(4)-SEMA (J. Chem. Phys. 132 (2010) 134301) that overcomes this problem of PISEMA. The present work demonstrates the advantage of 2(4)-SEMA as a highly sensitive SLF technique even for very large proton offset. 2(4)-SEMA has been designed for obtaining reliable dipolar couplings by switching the magic-angle spin-lock for protons over four quadrants as against the use of only two quadrants in PISEMA. It is observed that for on-resonance condition, 2(4)-SEMA gives rise to signal intensity comparable to or slightly higher than that from PISEMA. But under off-resonance conditions, intensities from 2(4)-SEMA are several fold higher than those from PISEMA. Comparison with another offset compensated pulse sequence, SAMPI4, also indicates a better intensity profile for 2(4)-SEMA. Experiments carried out on a single crystal of N-15 labeled N-acetyl-DL-valine and simulations have been used to study the relative performance of the pulse sequences considered. A new deep level transient spectroscopy technique is suggested which allows the deep level parameters to be obtained from a single temperature scan. Using large ratio t2/t1 of the measurement gate positions t1 and t2 and analyzing the steep high‐temperature side of the peak, it is demonstrated that the deep level activation energy can be determined with high accuracy.

The aim of this paper is to construct a nonequilibrium statistical‐mechanics theory to study hysteresis in ferromagnetic systems. We study the hysteretic response of model spin systems to periodic magnetic fields H(t) as a function of the amplitude H0 and frequency Ω. At fixed H0, we find conventional, squarelike hysteresis loops at low Ω, and rounded, roughly elliptical loops at high Ω, in agreement with experiments. For the O(N→∞), d=3, (Φ2)2 model with Langevin dynamics, we find a novel scaling behavior for the area A of the hysteresis loop, of the form A∝H0.660Ω0.33. We carry out a Monte Carlo simulation of the hysteretic response of the two‐dimensional, nearest‐neighbor, ferromagnetic Ising model. These results agree qualitatively with the results obtained for the O(N) model.

Formation of crystalline, monophasic indium selenide (InSe) thin solid films by elemental evaporation on hot glass substrates (400 to 530 K) is reported. The compound formation as well as the composition of the formed films are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The crystallinity of the rhombohedral InSe films can be improved by post-depositional annealing for t < 30 min at 533 K. The InSe thin films become Se-deficient at higher temperatures of deposition or longer duration of annealing. Optical studies reveal the bandgap to be around 1.29 eV. Under optimum conditions of preparations the lowest resistivity of ≈ 12.8 Ω cm is obtained.

Potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) is a relatively new nonlinear optical material with excellent combination of physical properties. This paper presents the combined etching and X-ray topographic studies carried out on KTP crystals with a view to characterizing their defects. KTP crystals employed in this investigation were grown from flux. Optical microscopic study of habit faces revealed growth layers and growth hillocks on (100) and (011) faces respectively. Etching of (011) habit faces proved that growth hillocks corresponded to the emergence point of dislocation out crops on these faces. The suitability of the new etchant to reveal dislocation was confirmed by etching the matched pairs obtained by cleaving. The defects present in the crystal were also studied by X-ray topography. The defect configuration in these crystals is characteristic of crystals grown from solution. The dislocations arc predominantly linear with their origin either at the nucleation centre or inclusions. In general, grown crystals were found to have low dislocation density and often large volumes of crystals free from dislocation could be obtained.
