One possible loosening mechanism of the femoral component in total hip replacement is fatigue cracking of the cement mantle. A computational method capable of simulating this process may therefore be a useful tool in the preclinical evaluation of prospective implants. In this study, we investigated the ability of a computational method to predict fatigue cracking in experimental models of the implanted femur construct. Experimental specimens were fabricated such that cement mantle visualisation was possible throughout the test. Two different implant surface finishes were considered: grit blasted and polished. Loading was applied to represent level gait for two million cycles. Computational (finite element) models were generated to the same geometry as the experimental specimens, with residual stress and porosity simulated in the cement mantle. Cement fatigue and creep were modelled over a simulated two million cycles. For the polished stem surface finish, the predicted fracture locations in the finite element models closely matched those on the experimental specimens, and the recorded stem displacements were also comparable. For the grit blasted stem surface finish, no cement mantle fractures were predicted by the computational method, which was again in agreement with the experimental results. It was concluded that the computational method was capable of predicting cement mantle fracture and subsequent stem displacement for the structure considered. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Cold-formed steel sections are often used as wall studs or floor joists; such sections often include web holes for ease of installation of the services. Cold-formed steel design codes, however, do not consider the effect of such web holes. In this paper, a combination of experimental tests and non-linear elasto-plastic finite element analyses are used to investigate the effect of such holes on web crippling under interior-two-flange (ITF) loading conditions; the cases of both flange fastened and flange unfastened are considered. A good agreement between the experimental tests and finite element analyses was obtained. The finite element model was then used for the purposes of a parametric study on the effect of different sizes and position of holes in the web. It was demonstrated that the main factors influencing the web crippling strength are the ratio of the hole depth to the depth of the web, and the ratio of the distance from the edge of the bearing to the flat depth of web. Design recommendations in the form of web crippling strength reduction factors are proposed, that are conservative to both the experimental and finite element results.

This paper presents the findings of a project part sponsored by an ICE Research and Development grant on portal frames in fire. The research reported here has also lead to a sucessful research grant from the IStructE. The paper describes a non-linear elasto plastic dynamic finite element model that captures the collapse of a portal frame in fire. It demonstrates that current guidance on the column base stiffness and strength, to prevent collapse, may in some cases be unconservative.

Reliable prediction of long-term medical device performance using computer simulation requires consideration of variability in surgical procedure, as well as patient-specific factors. However, even deterministic simulation of long-term failure processes for such devices is time and resource consuming so that including variability can lead to excessive time to achieve useful predictions. This study investigates the use of an accelerated probabilistic framework for predicting the likely performance envelope of a device and applies it to femoral prosthesis loosening in cemented hip arthroplasty.
A creep and fatigue damage failure model for bone cement, in conjunction with an interfacial fatigue model for the implant–cement interface, was used to simulate loosening of a prosthesis within a cement mantle. A deterministic set of trial simulations was used to account for variability of a set of surgical and patient factors, and a response surface method was used to perform and accelerate a Monte Carlo simulation to achieve an estimate of the likely range of prosthesis loosening. The proposed framework was used to conceptually investigate the influence of prosthesis selection and surgical placement on prosthesis migration.
Results demonstrate that the response surface method is capable of dramatically reducing the time to achieve convergence in mean and variance of predicted response variables. A critical requirement for realistic predictions is the size and quality of the initial training dataset used to generate the response surface and further work is required to determine the recommendations for a minimum number of initial trials. Results of this conceptual application predicted that loosening was sensitive to the implant size and femoral width. Furthermore, different rankings of implant performance were predicted when only individual simulations (e.g. an average condition) were used to rank implants, compared with when stochastic simulations were used. In conclusion, the proposed framework provides a viable approach to predicting realistic ranges of loosening behaviour for orthopaedic implants in reduced timeframes compared with conventional Monte Carlo simulations.

Nitride-strengthened, reduced activation, martensitic steel is anticipated to have higher creep strength because of the remarkable thermal stability of nitrides. Two nitride-strengthened, reduced activation martensitic steels with different carbon contents were prepared to investigate the microstructure and mechanical property changes with decreasing carbon content. It has been found that both steels had the microstructure of full martensite with fine nitrides dispersed homogeneously in the matrix and displayed extremely high strength but poor toughness. Compared with the steel with low carbon content (0.005 pct in wt pct), the steel with high carbon content (0.012 pct in wt pct) had not only the higher strength but also the higher impact toughness and grain coarsening temperature, which was related to the carbon content. On the one hand, carbon reduction led to Ta-rich inclusions; on the other hand, the grain grew larger when normalized at high temperature because of the absence of Ta carbonitrides, which would decrease impact toughness. The complicated Al2O3 inclusions in the two steels have been revealed to be responsible for the initiated cleavage fracture by acting as the critical cracks.

Non-linear large-displacement elasto-plastic finite element analyses are used to propose design recommendations for the eaves bracket of a cold-formed steel portal frame. Owing to the thinness of the sheet steel used for the brackets, such a structural design problem is not trivial as the brackets need to be designed against failure through buckling; without availability of the finite element method, expensive laboratory testing would therefore be required. In this paper, the finite element method is firstly used to predict the plastic moment capacity of the eaves bracket. Parametric studies are then used to propose design recommendations for the eaves bracket against two potential buckling modes of failure:

Experimental investigations at ambient temperature into the behaviour of bolted moment-connections between cold-formed steel members have previously been described. Full-scale joint tests have demonstrated that the channel-sections being connected are susceptible to premature failure, the result of web buckling caused by the concentration of load transfer from the bolts. The results of tests on bolted lap joints have been used to propose design recommendations for the shear strength in bearing of the bolt-hole. For both types of test, the results of non-linear elasto-plastic finite element analyses have been shown to have good agreement. No consideration, however, has been given to the behaviour of such connections at elevated temperatures. This paper describes non-linear elasto-plastic finite element parametric studies into the effects of elevated temperatures on bolted moment-connections between cold-formed steel members. Two issues at elevated temperatures are investigated:

The results of 82 web crippling tests are presented, with 20 tests conducted on channel sections without web openings and 62 tests conducted on channel sections with web openings. The tests consider both end-two-flange and interior-two-flange loading conditions. In the case of the tests with web openings, the hole was located directly under the concentrated load. The concentrated load was applied through bearing plates; the effect of different bearing lengths is investigated. In addition, the cases of both flanges fastened and unfastened to the support is considered. A non-linear elasto-plastic finite element model is described, and the results compared against the laboratory test results; a good agreement was obtained in terms of both strength and failure modes.

Simulations of the injection stretch-blow moulding process have been developed for the manufacture of poly(ethylene terephthalate) bottles using the commercial finite element package ABAQUS/standard. Initially a simulation of the manufacture of a 330 mL bottle was developed with three different material models (hyperelastic, creep, and a non-linear viscoelastic model (Buckley model)) to ascertain their suitability for modelling poly(ethylene terephthalate). The Buckley model was found to give results for the sidewall thickness that matched best with those measured from bottles off the production line. Following the investigation of the material models, the Buckley model was chosen to conduct a three-dimensional simulation of the manufacture of a 2 L bottle. It was found that the model was also capable of predicting the wall thickness distribution accurately for this bottle. In the development of the three-dimensional simulation a novel approach, which uses an axisymmetric model until the material reaches the petaloid base, was developed. This resulted in substantial savings in computing time. © 2000 IoM Communication Ltd.

Composite beams with large web openings are often used, and their design is controlled by Vierendeel bending at the four corners of each opening, which is assisted by local composite action with the floor slab. Development of this Vierendeel bending resistance may be limited by pull-out failure of the shear connectors. In this paper, a non-linear elasto-plastic finite element model of a composite beam with web openings was used to investigate this mode of pull-out failure. A test was performed on a typical composite slab in which the shear connectors were subject to pure tension and the failure load was 67 kN, which is approximately 70% of the longitudinal shear resistance. The results of the finite element model are compared against those obtained using the established design theory, that does not limit the vertical pull-out resistance of the shear connectors. It is shown that the local bending resistance due to composite action should be reduced when limited by pull-out of the shear connectors. A parametric study investigated the effect of openings of 600 to 1200 mm length. A simple model is developed to establish the Vierendeel bending resistance, when limited by pull-out of the shear connectors.

Different classes of constitutive models have been proposed to capture the time-dependent behaviour of soft soil (creep, stress relaxation, rate dependency). This paper critically reviews many of the models developed based on understanding of the time dependent stress-strain-stress rate-strain rate behaviour of soils and viscoplasticity in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. Some discussion is also made on the numerical implementation aspects of these models. Typical findings from numerical analyses of geotechnical structures constructed on soft soils are also discussed. The general elastic viscoplastic (EVP) models can roughly be divided into two categories: models based on the concept of overstress and models based on non-stationary flow surface theory. Although general in structure, both categories have their own strengths and shortcomings. This review indicates that EVP analysis is yet to be vastly used by the geotechnical engineers, apparently due to the mathematical complication involved in the formulation of the constitutive models, unconvincing benefit in terms of the accuracy of performance prediction, requirement of additional soil parameter(s), difficulties in determining them, and the necessity of excessive computing resources and time. © 2013 Taylor & Francis.

Using piezoresponse force microscopy, we have observed the progressive development of ferroelectric flux-closure domain structures and Landau−Kittel-type domain patterns, in 300 nm thick single-crystal BaTiO3 platelets. As the microstructural development proceeds, the rate of change of the domain configuration is seen to decrease exponentially. Nevertheless, domain wall velocities throughout are commensurate with creep processes in oxide ferroelectrics. Progressive screening of macroscopic destabilizing fields, primarily the surface-related depolarizing field, successfully describes the main features of the observed kinetics. Changes in the separation of domain-wall vertex junctions prompt a consideration that vertex−vertex interactions could be influencing the measured kinetics. However, the expected dynamic signatures associated with direct vertex−vertex interactions are not resolved. If present, our measurements confine the length scale for interaction between vertices to the order of a few hundred nanometers.

Accurate models of cement and interface fatigue are essential if computationally assessing risk of aseptic loosening of cemented joint replacements is to become clinically relevant. A series of approaches will be presented that attempt to model several aspects of bone cement fatigue relevant to predicting cemented joint replacement failure. Failure models for homogeneous (bulk) bone cement and its interface with implant and host tissue are reviewed. Variability introduced by porosity and interaction between fatigue and creep are also considered. Finally, some current and potential future developments are discussed.

A full-scale, non-uniform natural fire test on a cold-formed steel portal frame building is described. The results of the test are used to validate a non-linear, elasto-plastic, finite element shell idealisation, for the purposes of later forming the basis of a performance-based design approach for cold-formed steel portal frames at elevated temperatures.
