Induction of micronucleus and nuclear alterations in fish (Oreochromis niloticus) by a petroleum

In this study, micronucleus and nuclear alterations tests were performed on erythrocytes of Oreochromis niloticus (Perciformes, Cichlidae) in order to evaluate the water quality of the Atibaia river, in an area that receives effluents discharge of a petroleum refinery and also to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatments used by the refinery. Water samples were collected in five different sites related with a refinery from São Paulo State, Brazil. For the micronucleus and nuclear alterations tests, O. niloticus specimens were exposed for 72 h to the water samples and in pure ground water (negative control). The results herein obtained indicated that the treatments used by the refinery diminished the cytogenetic damage; however they were not fully effective, since the final mill has induced damages in the genetic material of the test organism. As duas formigas que mais comumente se associam com a mirmecofita de sub-bosque Maieta guianensis (Melastomataceac) respondem de maneiras diferentes a simulac (o) over tilde es experimentais de herbivoria. Enquanto Pheidole minutula & induzida tanto por danos fisicos e extratos de tecido foliar, Crematogaster laevis 6 induzida apenas pelos danos fisicos. Sugerimos que tal variac (a) over tildeo interespecifica em respostas induzidas e comum e pode influenciar a qualidade das defesas contra herbivoros que as formigas oferecem as plantas que elas ocupam.

Design of a reconfigurable pseudorandom number generator for use in intelligent systems

This paper deals with the design of a network-on-chip reconfigurable pseudorandom number generation unit that can map and execute meta-heuristic algorithms in hardware. The unit can be configured to implement one of the following five linear generator algorithms: a multiplicative congruential, a mixed congruential, a standard multiple recursive, a mixed multiple recursive, and a multiply-with-carry. The generation unit can be used both as a pseudorandom and a message passing-based server, which is able to produce pseudorandom numbers on demand, sending them to the network-on-chip blocks that originate the service request. The generator architecture has been mapped to a field programmable gate array, and showed that millions of numbers in 32-, 64-, 96-, or 128-bit formats can be produced in tens of milliseconds. The generator coordinate method for a reaction coordinate coupled to a harmonic oscillator bath

This paper investigates the usefulness of the generator coordinate method (GCM) for treating the dynamics of a reaction coordinate coupled to a bath of harmonic degrees of freedom. Models for the unimolecular dissociation and isomerization process (proton transfer) are analyzed. The GCM results, presented in analytical form, provide a very good description and are compared to other methods Like the basis set method and multiconfiguration time dependent self-consistent field. Protocols for hyperlactatemia induction in the lactate minimum test adapted to swimming rats

The lactate minimum test (LACmin) has been considered an important indicator of endurance exercise capacity and a single session protocol can predict the maximal steady state lactate (MLSS). The objective of this study was to determine the best swimming protocol to induce hyperlactatemia in order to assure the LACmin in rats (Rattus norvegicus), standardized to four different protocols (P) of lactate elevation. The protocols were PI: 6 min of intermittent jumping exercise in water (load of 50% of the body weight - bw); P2: two 13% bw load swimming bouts until exhaustion (thin); P3: one thin 13% bw load swimming bout; and P4: two 13% bw load swimming bouts (1st 30 s, 2nd to thin), separated by a 30 s interval. The incremental phase of LACmin beginning with initial loads of 4% bw, increased in 0.5% at each 5 min. Peak lactate concentration was collected after 5, 7 and 9 min (mmol L-1) and differed among the protocols P 1 (15.2 +/- 0.4, 14.9 +/- 0.7, 14.8 +/- 0.6) and P2 (14.0 +/- 0.4, 14.9 +/- 0.4, 15.5 +/- 0.5) compared to P3 (5.1 +/- 0.1, 5.6 +/- 0.3, 5.6 +/- 0.3) and P4 (4.7 +/- 0.2, 6.8 +/- 0.2, 7.1 +/- 0.2). The LACmin determination success rates were 58%, 55%, 80% and 91% in P1, P2, P3 and P4 protocols, respectively. The MLSS did not differ from LACmin in any protocol. The LACmin obtained from P4 protocol showed better assurance for the MLSS identification in most of the tested rats. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ab initio study of high tridymite by the formalism generator coordinate Hartree-Fock

The Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock (GCHF) Method is applied to generate extended 14s 8p and 17s 11p Gaussian basis sets for the atoms O and Si, respectively. The role of the weight functions in the assessment of the numerical integration range of the GCHF is shown. The Gaussian basis sets are contracted to [6s4p] O atom and [8s5p] Si atom by the Dunning's segmented contraction scheme. To evaluate the quality of our contracted [6s4p] and [8s5p] bases in molecular calculations we accomplish calculations of total and orbital energies in the Hartree-Fock-Roothaan method for O-2 and SiO molecules. We compare the results obtained with the our (14s 8p) and (17s 11p) bases sets with the of 6-311G basis and with values from the literature. The addition of one d polarization function in the silicon basis and its utilization with the basis for oxygen leads to the calculation of electronic properties and IR Spectrum of high tridymite in space group D-3d. Midazolam and ketamine induction before halothane anaesthesia in ponies: cardiorespiratory, endocrine and metabolic changes

Six Welsh gelding ponies were premedicated with 0.03 mg/kg of acepromazine intravenously (i.v.) prior to induction of anaesthesia with midazolam at 0.2 mg/kg and ketamine at 2 mg/kg i.v.. Anaesthesia was maintained for 2 h using 1.2% halothane concentration in oxygen. Heart rate, electrocardiograph (EGG), arterial blood pressure, respiratory rate, blood gases, temperature, haematocrit, plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP), dynorphin, beta-endorphin, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline, glucose and lactate concentrations were measured before and after premedication, immediately after induction, every 20 min during anaesthesia, and at 20 and 120 min after disconnection. Induction was rapid, excitement-free and good muscle relaxation was observed. There were no changes in heart and respiratory rates, Decrease in temperature, hyperoxia and respiratory acidosis developed during anaesthesia and slight hypotension was observed (minimum value 76 +/- 10 mm Hg at 40 mins), No changes were observed in dynorphin, beta-endorphin, ACTH, catecholamines and glucose, Plasma cortisol concentration increased from 220 +/- 17 basal to 354 +/- 22 nmol/L at 120 min during anaesthesia; plasma AVP concentration increased from 3 +/- 1 basal to 346 +/- 64 pmol/L at 100 min during anaesthesia and plasma lactate concentration increased from 1.22 +/- 0.08 basal to 1.76 +/- 0.13 mmol/L at 80 min during anaesthesia, Recovery was rapid and uneventful with ponies taking 46 +/- 6 min to stand. When midazolam/ketamine was compared with thiopentone or detomidine/ketamine for induction before halothane anaesthesia using an otherwise similar protocol in the same ponies, it caused slightly more respiratory depression, but less hypotension. Additionally, midazolam reduced the hormonal stress response commonly observed during halothane anaesthesia and appears to have a good potential for use in horses.
