Eosinophil Cationic Protein (ECP) is a member of RNase A superfamily which carries out the obligatory catalytic role of cleaving RNA. It is involved in a variety of biological functions. Molecular dynamics simulations followed by essential dynamics analysis on this protein are carried out with the goal of gaining insights into the dynamical properties at atomic level. The top essential modes contribute to subspaces and to the transition phase. Further, the sidechain-sidechain/sidechain-mainchain hydrogen bond clusters are analyzed in the top modes, and compared with those of crystal structure. The role of residues identified by these methods is discussed in the context of concerted motion, structure and stability of the protein.

The dynamics of hydrogen bonds among water molecules themselves and with the polar head groups (PHG) at a micellar surface have been investigated by long molecular dynamics simulations. The lifetime of the hydrogen bond between a PHG and a water molecule is found to be much longer than that between any two water molecules, and is likely to be a general feature of hydrophilic surfaces of organized assemblies. Analyses of individual water trajectories suggest that water molecules can remain bound to the micellar surface for more than 100 ps. The activation energy for such a transition from the bound to a free state for the water molecules is estimated to be about 3.5 kcal/mol.

(La0.667Ca0.333Mn1-xMO3-delta)-O-x (M = Mg, Li or Re) exhibit insulating behaviour and nonlinear current-voltage (J-E) relationship with voltage-limiting characteristics at temperatures below the ferromagnetic transition (T-c). The high current region is set in at field strengths <60 V/cm. Nonlinearity exponent, alpha in the relation J = kE(alpha) increases inversely with temperature. In presence of an external magnetic field, the J-E curves show higher current density at lower field strengths. Microstructural studies indicate that there is no segregation of secondary phases in the grain boundary regions. There is remarkable changes in p(T) as well as J-E curves with the grain size. Annealing studies in lower p(O2) atmospheres indicate that there is significant out-diffusion of oxygen ions through the grain boundary layer (GBL) regions creating oxygen vacancies in the GBL regions. The concentration of Mn4+ ions is lowered at the GBL due to oxygen vacancies, reducing the probability of hopping and resulting in insulating behaviour. Therefore an insulating barrier is introduced between two conducting grains and the carrier motion between the grains is inhibited. Thus below T-c, where sufficient increase in resistivity is observed the conduction may be arising as a result of spin dependent tunneling across the barrier. External electric field lowers the barrier height and establishes carrier transport across the barrier. Above certain field strength, barrier height diminishes significantly and thereby allowing large number of carriers for conduction, giving rise to highly nonlinear conductivity. In order to investigate the supramolecular hydrogen-bonded networks and other structural features exhibited by compounds containing an organic cation and an inorganic anion, sulfates of the organic diamines, ethylenediamine (I), 1,3-diaminopropane (II), piperazine (III), and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) (IV) have been prepared investigated by X-ray crystallography. While II, III, and IV crystallize in the centrosymmetric space group, Pbca, P2(1)/n, Pbcn, respectively, I crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric space group, P4(1) exhibiting chirality and weak NLO properties. I-IV exhibit different types of supramolecular H-bonded networks involving the organic cation and the SO42- anion. The nature and strength of the H-bonding network vary from one compound to another, with the strongest network found in piperazinium sulfate, III, and the weakest in II. While in III, water molecules form part of the H-bonded network, they are present as guest molecules in the channels of IV. Thermal stability of the compounds as well as the infrared spectra reflect the stabilities of these H-bonded solids. (C) 2002 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.

Structures of monohydrogen squarates of methylamine, ethylenediamine, 1,3-diaminopropane, 1,4-diaminobutane, 1,5-diaminopentane, N,N'-diemethylpiperazine and N,N,N,N-tetramethylguanidine have been studied in detail. The supramolecular hydrogen-bonded molecular networks are formed by the monoanion of squaric acid by itself or in association with the parent acid. Three types of hydrogen-bonded motifs are observed in these compounds, namely a liner chain, a cyclic dimer and a cyclic tetramer. These hydrogen-bonded motifs formed by the squaric acid species interact with the amine through N-H...O hydrogen-bonding and give rise to predominantly layered structures, while some of them also exhibit three-dimensional structures. Two of the monohydrogen squarate structures also exhibit pi-pi interactions between two squarate rings. The various hydrogen-bonding parameters in the amine squarates are discussed at length. We synthesize vertically aligned arrays of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a chemical vapor deposition system with floating catalyst, using different concentrations of hydrogen in the gas feedstock. We report the effect of different hydrogen concentrations on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the resulting material. We show that a lower hydrogen concentration during synthesis results in the growth of stiffer CNT arrays with higher average bulk density. A lower hydrogen concentration also leads to the synthesis of CNT arrays that can reach higher peak stress at maximum compressive strain, and dissipate a larger amount of energy during compression. The individual CNTs in the arrays synthesized with a lower hydrogen concentration have, on average, larger outer diameters (associated with the growth of CNTs with a larger number of walls), but present a less uniform diameter distribution. The overall heights of the arrays and their strain recovery after compression have been found to be independent of the hydrogen concentration during growth. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Current-voltage (I-V) and impedance measurements were carried out in doped poly(3-methylthiophene) devices by varying the carrier density. As the carrier concentration reduces the I-V characteristics indicate that the conduction mechanism is limited by metal-polymer interface, as also observed in impedance data. The temperature dependence of I-V in moderately doped samples shows a trap-controlled space-charge-limited conduction (SCLC); whereas in lightly doped devices injection-limited conduction is observed at lower bias and SCLC at higher voltages. The carrier density-dependent quasi-Fermi level adjustment and trap-limited transport could explain this variation in conduction mechanism. Capacitance measurements at lower frequencies and higher bias voltages show a sign change in values due to the significant variations in the relaxation behaviour for lightly and moderately doped samples. The electrical hysteresis increases as carrier density is reduced due to the time scales involved in the de-trapping of carriers.

Among the carbon allotropes, carbyne chains appear outstandingly accessible for sorption and very light. Hydrogen adsorption on calcium-decorated carbyne chain was studied using ab initio density functional calculations. The estimation of surface area of carbyne gives the value four times larger than that of graphene, which makes carbyne attractive as a storage scaffold medium. Furthermore, calculations show that a Ca-decorated carbyne can adsorb up to 6 H(2) molecules per Ca atom with a binding energy of similar to 0.2 eV, desirable for reversible storage, and the hydrogen storage capacity can exceed similar to 8 wt %. Unlike recently reported transition metal-decorated carbon nanostructures, which suffer from the metal clustering diminishing the storage capacity, the clustering of Ca atoms on carbyne is energetically unfavorable. Thermodynamics of adsorption of H(2) molecules on the Ca atom was also investigated using equilibrium grand partition function.

Substantial amount of fixed charge present in most of the alternative gate dielectrics gives rise to large shifts in the flat-band voltage (VFB) and charge trapping and de-trapping causes hysterectic changes on voltage cycling. Both phenomena affect stable and reliable transistor operation. In this paper we have studied for the first time the effect of post-metallization hydrogen annealing on the C-V curve of MOS capacitors employing zirconia, one of the most promising gate dielectric. Samples were annealed in hydrogen ambient for up to 30 minutes at different temperatures ranging from room temperature to 400°C. C-V measurements were done after annealing at each temperature and the hysteresis width was calculated from the C-V curves. A minimum hysteresis width of ∼35 mV was observed on annealing the sample at 200°C confirming the excellent suitability of this dielectric

The effect of hydrogenation on the photoluminescence (PL) of InP : Mg, InP : Zn and undoped n-InP is presented. An increase in the near band edge pl intensity due to passivation of non-radiative centers was observed in all the samples. A donor - acceptor pair transition was observed before hydrogenation in the InP : Mg sample and after hydrogenation in the InP : Zn sample due to the acceptor deactivation. In n-InP the enhancement of donor bound exciton after hydrogenation points to the absence of donor passivation.

Structural and electronic properties of C-H center dot center dot center dot O contacts in compounds containing a formyl group are investigated from the perspective of both hydrogen bonding and dipole-dipole interactions, in a systematic and graded approach. The effects of a-substitution and self-association on the nature of the formyl H-atom are studied with the NBO and AIM methodologies. The relative dipole-dipole contributions in formyl C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions are obtained for aldehyde dimers. The stabilities and energies of aldehyde clusters (dimer through octamer) have been examined computationally. Such studies have an implication in crystallization mechanisms. Experimental X-ray crystal structures of formaldehyde, acrolein and N-methylformamide have been determined in order to ascertain the role of C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions in the crystal packing of formyl compounds.

Rotational spectra of five isotopologues of the title complex, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)O, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot HOD, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot D(2)O, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)(18)O and C(6)H(5)CCD center dot center dot center dot H(2)O, were measured and analyzed. The parent isotopologue is an asymmetric top with kappa = -0.73. The complex is effectively planar (ab inertial plane) and both `a' and `b' dipole transitions have been observed but no c dipole transition could be seen. All the transitions of the parent complex are split into two resulting from an internal motion interchanging the two H atoms in H(2)O. This is confirmed by the absence of such doubling for the C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot HOD complex and a significant reduction in the splitting for the D(2)O analog. The rotational spectra, unambiguously, reveal a structure in which H(2)O has both O-H center dot center dot center dot pi (pi cloud of acetylene moiety) and C-H center dot center dot center dot O (ortho C-H group of phenylacetylene) interactions. This is in agreement with the structure deduced by IR-UV double resonance studies (Singh et al., J. Phys. Chem. A, 2008, 112, 3360) and also with the global minimum predicted by advanced electronic structure theory calculations (Sedlack et al., J. Phys. Chem. A, 2009, 113, 6620). Atoms in Molecule (AIM) theoretical analysis of the complex reveals the presence of both O-H center dot center dot center dot pi and C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. More interestingly, based on the electron densities at the bond critical points, this analysis suggests that both these interactions are equally strong. Moreover, the presence of both these interactions leads to significant deviation from linearity of both hydrogen bonds.

Fe-Cr/Al2O3 metal-ceramic composites prepared by hydrogen reduction at different temperatures and for different periods have been investigated by a combined use of Mössbauer spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy in order to obtain information on the nature of the metallic species formed. Total reduction of Fe3+ does not occur by increasing the reduction time at 1320 K from 1 to 30 h, and the amount of superparamagnetic metallic species is essentially constant (about 10%). Temperatures higher than 1470 K are needed to achieve nearly total reduction of substitutional Fe3+. Interestingly, iron favors the reduction of chromium. The composition of the Fe-Cr particles is strongly dependent on their size, the Cr content being higher in particles smaller than 10 nm.

The vacuum interrupter is extensively employed in the medium voltage switchgear for the interruption of the short-circuit current. The voltage across the arc during current interruption is termed as the arc voltage. The nature and magnitude of this arc voltage is indicative of the performance of the contacts and the vacuum interrupter as a whole. Also, the arc voltage depends on the parameters like the magnitude of short-circuit current, the arcing time, the point of opening of the contacts, the geometry and area of the contacts and the type of magnetic field. This paper investigates the dependency of the arc voltage on some of these parameters. The paper also discusses the usefulness of the arc voltage in diagnosing the performance of the contacts.
