Para realizar el seguimiento online de la carrera de resistencia TrailWalker que organiza anualmente Intermon OX, se ha desarrollado un sistema GIS formado por una aplicación cliente iOS para el teléfono iPhone, que mediante el sistema de localización de Apple transmite periódicamente la posición de los participantes a un servidor con el software ArcGIS for Server, que permitirá explotar la información espacial mediante un visor web.

Migración M.O.S.S. 2007 a SharePoint 2010 de Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío

En el presente trabajo se ha descrito el análisis y diseño que motiva el proyecto de migración de Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007 a la versión SharePoint Server 2010 que desarrolla la intranet de uno de los mayores complejos hospitalarios de nuestro país.

Lengua familiar y conocimiento de la lengua escolar en Cataluña al finalizar la Educación Infantil = Home Language and Knowledge of the School Language in Catalonia at the end of Nursery School

La infancia extranjera se escolariza en Cataluña en un programa de cambio de lengua del hogar a la escuela. Las investigaciones afirman que este alumnado tarda un mínimo de seis años en equiparar sus habilidades lingüístico-cognitivas con sus pares autóctonos, no así las habilidades conversacionales, las cuales se adquieren antes de los dos años de residencia. Sin embargo, no existen estudios sobre los efectos de la escolarización en el parvulario del alumnado alófono, así como de su lengua familiar, en relación con la adquisición de la lengua escolar. El artículo es un estudio comparativo de la adquisición del catalán de 567 autóctonos y 434 alófonos, al final del parvulario, en 50 escuelas de Cataluña que escolarizan a alumnado de origen extranjero. Las lenguas del alumnado autóctono son el catalán, el castellano y el bilingüismo catalán-castellano y las lenguas del alumnado alófono son el árabe, el soninké y el castellano. Los factores utilizados más relevantes han sido el nivel socioprofesional y educativo de las familias, el tiempo de residencia y el momento de escolarización del alumnado, el porcentaje de alumnado catalanohablante y de alumnado alófono en el aula y el contexto sociolingüístico del centro escolar. Los resultados muestran que el alumnado autóctono sabe más catalán que el alumnado alófono, pero las diferencias desaparecen respecto a algunos factores, de los cuales los más relevantes son los relacionados con las características del alumnado de las aulas. Native homing endonucleases can target conserved genes in humans and in animal models.

In recent years, both homing endonucleases (HEases) and zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs) have been engineered and selected for the targeting of desired human loci for gene therapy. However, enzyme engineering is lengthy and expensive and the off-target effect of the manufactured endonucleases is difficult to predict. Moreover, enzymes selected to cleave a human DNA locus may not cleave the homologous locus in the genome of animal models because of sequence divergence, thus hampering attempts to assess the in vivo efficacy and safety of any engineered enzyme prior to its application in human trials. Here, we show that naturally occurring HEases can be found, that cleave desirable human targets. Some of these enzymes are also shown to cleave the homologous sequence in the genome of animal models. In addition, the distribution of off-target effects may be more predictable for native HEases. Based on our experimental observations, we present the HomeBase algorithm, database and web server that allow a high-throughput computational search and assignment of HEases for the targeting of specific loci in the human and other genomes. We validate experimentally the predicted target specificity of candidate fungal, bacterial and archaeal HEases using cell free, yeast and archaeal assays.

MADAP, a flexible clustering tool for the interpretation of one-dimensional genome annotation data.

A recurring task in the analysis of mass genome annotation data from high-throughput technologies is the identification of peaks or clusters in a noisy signal profile. Examples of such applications are the definition of promoters on the basis of transcription start site profiles, the mapping of transcription factor binding sites based on ChIP-chip data and the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) from whole genome SNP profiles. Input to such an analysis is a set of genome coordinates associated with counts or intensities. The output consists of a discrete number of peaks with respective volumes, extensions and center positions. We have developed for this purpose a flexible one-dimensional clustering tool, called MADAP, which we make available as a web server and as standalone program. A set of parameters enables the user to customize the procedure to a specific problem. The web server, which returns results in textual and graphical form, is useful for small to medium-scale applications, as well as for evaluation and parameter tuning in view of large-scale applications, requiring a local installation. The program written in C++ can be freely downloaded from ftp://ftp.epd.unil.ch/pub/software/unix/madap. The MADAP web server can be accessed at http://www.isrec.isb-sib.ch/madap/.

Wählen per Internet verändert die Schweiz

Der Autor befasst sich mit dem Thema e-Voting am Beispiel der Schweiz. Umwählen zu gehen, begibt sich der Bürger auf Wählerseiten im Internet. Dort beantwortet er zuerst 10 Fragen zu bedeutsamen politischen Themen. Je nach seinen Antworten werden die dafür politisch eintretenden Kandidaten vorgestellt. Der Wähler kann sich nun detailliert über sie und ihre politischen Positionen informieren und dann entscheiden, welchem Politiker er seine Stimme gibt. Voraussetzung hierfür ist, dass die Kandidaten präzise Angaben über ihre Person und die von ihnen vertretene Politik im Internet zugänglich machen, da sie ansonsten auf den Wahlseiten nicht zugelassen würden und somit ihre Chancen, gewählt zu werden, minimieren würden. Hat der Bürger sich festgelegt, schickt er das Dokument zur Auswertung an einen Server des Staates, der dann innerhalb von Stunden das neue Wahlergebnis präsentieren könnte. Die Wahlseiten selbst werden wahrscheinlich nicht vom Staat kontrolliert, da die Regierung diese manipulieren könnte. Wenn aber die Gestaltung der Seiten in private Hand gelegt wird, besteht die Gefahr, dass die Listen nicht als offizielle Wahllisten anerkannt werden. Hier besteht also noch Klärungsbedarf. Ein klarer Vorteil solcher Wahlseiten ist, dass die Ziele und Interessen der Politiker noch transparenter werden. Das Internet bietet dem Bürger die Möglichkeit, seine persönlichen Interessen mit denen der Politiker zu vergleichen und sich dann nach einem Abwägunsprozess zu entscheiden. ,,In einigen Jahren werden hier zu Lande Wahlurnen ganz verschwinden", prophezeit der Autor und verweist auf die Arbeit einer Projektgruppe, die die noch offenen Fragen des E-Votings klären will.

El modelo de Súnion y el pronóstico de la educación permanente. Lo pendiente desde una doble perspectiva

La idea de que el proceso de Bolonia y la reforma universitaria representan un cambio radical del modelo educativo y una auténtica renovación didáctica no halla su correspondencia necesaria en la teoría pedagógica de la educación superior. Conscientes de la importancia y la repercusión de esta nueva realidad, que es ya un hecho en la práctica cotidiana de las academias, el presente artículo intenta trazar un paralelismo con lo que aconteció en otros momentos clave de la pedagogía moderna. En la didáctica del siglo XX, la dimensión práctica de la enseñanza ha dejado faltas de un análisis teórico a no pocas iniciativas. Mediante el ejemplo de Súnion. Institució Cultural Catalana se considera hasta qué punto conviene mirar a la enseñanza primaria y secundaria para prever el futuro de la enseñanza superior y prepararse para un profundo replanteamiento tanto del aprendizaje y de lo aprendido como de las figuras del profesor y del estudiante.

Mechanosensory interactions drive collective behaviour in Drosophila.

Collective behaviour enhances environmental sensing and decision-making in groups of animals. Experimental and theoretical investigations of schooling fish, flocking birds and human crowds have demonstrated that simple interactions between individuals can explain emergent group dynamics. These findings indicate the existence of neural circuits that support distributed behaviours, but the molecular and cellular identities of relevant sensory pathways are unknown. Here we show that Drosophila melanogaster exhibits collective responses to an aversive odour: individual flies weakly avoid the stimulus, but groups show enhanced escape reactions. Using high-resolution behavioural tracking, computational simulations, genetic perturbations, neural silencing and optogenetic activation we demonstrate that this collective odour avoidance arises from cascades of appendage touch interactions between pairs of flies. Inter-fly touch sensing and collective behaviour require the activity of distal leg mechanosensory sensilla neurons and the mechanosensory channel NOMPC. Remarkably, through these inter-fly encounters, wild-type flies can elicit avoidance behaviour in mutant animals that cannot sense the odour--a basic form of communication. Our data highlight the unexpected importance of social context in the sensory responses of a solitary species and open the door to a neural-circuit-level understanding of collective behaviour in animal groups.

Human capital spillovers, productivity and regional convergence in Spain

This paper analyses the differential impact of human capital, in terms of different levels of schooling, on regional productivity and convergence. The potential existence of geographical spillovers of human capital is also considered by applying spatial panel data techniques. The empirical analysis of Spanish provinces between 1980 and 2007 confirms the positive impact of human capital on regional productivity and convergence, but reveals no evidence of any positive geographical spillovers of human capital. In fact, in some specifications the spatial lag presented by tertiary studies has a negative effect on the variables under consideration.

Desarrollo de una aplicación informática para la gestión de actividades docentes

Este proyecto consiste en el desarrollo de una aplicación informática que permite gestionar de forma automatizada y consistente los datos requeridos para la actividad docente de un profesor universitario. La aplicación permite gestionar: plan docente, asignaturas, horario docente, calendario de exámenes y proyectos final de carrera. Todas estas opciones tienen las funciones de, agregar, buscar, modificar y eliminar datos. Además tiene otras opciones como calendario docente y webs, cuya finalidad será consultar, de forma directa, páginas web de interés docente. Finalmente, la opción material docente tendrá como finalidad, crear, modificar y eliminar ficheros de diferente formato (word, excel, powerpoint, pdf) asociados a las asignaturas registradas en la aplicación. La aplicación se ha implementado en el sistema operativo Windows en el lenguaje de programación Java. Los datos utilizados se almacenan en la base de datos MySql Workbench. Para las validaciones de entrada de datos se ha utilizado JavaScript y JQuery. El diseño de la interfaz se ha llevado a cabo con Java Server Pages, Html, Css y framework Struts.

On the impact of microcredit: Evidence from a randomized intervention in rural Ethiopia

We use data from a randomized controlled trial conducted in 2003-2006 in rural Amhara andOromiya (Ethiopia) to study the impacts of the introduction of microfinance in treated communities. We document that borrowing increased substantially in locations where the programs started their operations, but we find mixed evidence of improvements in a number ofsocio-economic outcomes, including income from agriculture, animal husbandry, non-farm self-employment, schooling and indicators of women's empowerment.
