This paper presents a comparative study on the treatment of high-strength animal wastewater in two parallel lab-scale constructed reed bed systems, progressively-sized system and anti-sized system, which have same configuration but different arrangement of bed media. The reed bed systems were operated in a tidal flow pattern to treat diluted pig slurry. Detailed analyses were carried out for the removal of some key pollutants including COD, BOD5, NH4-N, P and suspended solids. The results showed that both systems have considerable capacity for the removal of solids, organic matter and inorganic nutrients. The formation of biofilms on the surfaces of gravel media in both reed bed systems was monitored by scanning selected gravel samples using scanning electron microscopy. In general, no significant difference was detected with regard to the percentage pollutant removal in the systems. However, the anti-sized system demonstrated a clear advantage in its ability to slow down the clogging of bed media and avoid the impairment of long-term functioning and sustainability of the beds. A conceptual model was developed to predict the occurrence of the clogging. The validity of the model was tested using data from this study and from the literatures.

A thorough and detailed study of diastereointerconversion in the chiral platinum complexes [(NUPHOS)Pt{(S)-BINOL}] (3a-e) has been undertaken and compared with the results of a similar study with [(BIPHEP)Pt{(S)-BINOL}]. Rate data revealed that this process obeys first-order relaxation kinetics, and rate constants for conversion of the minor to the major diastereoisomer have been obtained. Eyring analysis of the data gave DeltaH(double dagger) and DeltaS(double dagger) values of 22-25 kcal mol(-1) and -1 to -16 eu, respectively. In combination with computational analysis, these studies indicate that atropinversion most likely occurs via an on-metal pathway involving a planar seven-membered transition state. Substitution of (S)-BINOL for (S,S)-DPEN results in a marked reduction in the barrier to atropinversion; a DeltaH(double dagger) value of 17 kcal mol(-1) has been determined for the conversion of delta-[(Ph-4-NUPHOS)Pt{(S,S)-DPEN}]Cl-2 to lambda-[(Ph-4-NUPHOS)Pt{(S,S)-DPEN}]Cl-2, which could indicate that an alternative mechanism operates.

The reactivity of electrogenerated bromine with cyclohexene has been studied on a platinum microelectrode by linear sweep and cyclic voltammetry in both the room temperature ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide, and the conventional aprotic solvent, acetonitrile. Variation in the voltammetric response was observed in the two solvents, indicating that the bromination reaction proceeded via separate mechanisms. To identify the different products, electrolysis was conducted on the preparative scale and NMR spectroscopy confirmed that while bromination of the organic substrate in the ionic liquid yields trans-1,2-dibromocyclohexane, in acetonitrile, trans-1-(N-acetylamino)-2-bromocyclohexane is instead obtained as the major product. The reaction mechanism for bromination in acetonitrile has been modeled using digital simulation.

We have performed density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximation to investigate CO oxidation on a close-packed transition metal surface, Pd(lll), and a more open surface, Pd(100), aiming to shed light on surface structure effects on reaction pathways and reactivity, an important issue in catalysis. Reaction pathways on both surfaces at two different coverages have been studied. It is found that the reaction pathways on both surfaces possess crucial common features despite the fact that they have different surface symmetries. Having determined reaction barriers in these systems, we find that the reaction on Pd(lll) is strongly coverage dependent. Surface coverages, however, have little effect on the reaction on Pd(100). Calculations also reveal that the low coverage reactions are structure sensitive while the medium coverage reactions are not. Detailed discussions on these results are given.

It has been increasingly recognised in recent years that domestic violence constitutes a human rights issue. This article seeks to shed light on the question of how human rights law may be used in the area of domestic violence through the medium of a litigation strategy. The method used is a comparative assessment of the approaches taken towards gender issues by the Constitutional Courts in three states that have famously dynamic judiciaries- India, South Africa and Canada. A number of the obstacles to the effectiveness of human rights law are also examined.

This paper argues that religious associations have a number of substantive rights when it comes to their external relations. It does so though comparing the position of the OSCE and the Council of Europe. This paper considers whether the emerging framework includes: (1) a right to legal entity status, (2) a right to establish and run charitable or educational institutions, (3) a right to privileges and substantive benefits and (4) a right to anything else. It concludes that the current developments are welcome because religious freedom has a collective aspect that is essential to the lives of many believers.

Objectives: To investigate the impact of different PSA testing policies and health-care systems on prostate cancer incidence and mortality in two countries with similar populations, the Republic of Ireland (RoI) and Northern Ireland (NI).

Methods: Population-level data on PSA tests, prostate biopsies and prostate cancer cases 1993–2005 and prostate cancer deaths 1979–2006 were compiled. Annual percentage change (APC) was estimated by joinpoint regression.

Results: Prostate cancer rates were similar in both areas in 1994 but increased rapidly in RoI compared to NI. The PSA testing rate increased sharply in RoI (APC = +23.3%), and to a lesser degree in NI (APC = +9.7%) to reach 412 and 177 tests per 1,000 men in 2004, respectively. Prostatic biopsy rates rose in both countries, but were twofold higher in RoI. Cancer incidence rates rose significantly, mirroring biopsy trends, in both countries reaching 440 per 100,000 men in RoI in 2004 compared to 294 in NI. Median age at diagnosis was lower in RoI (71 years) compared to NI (73 years) (p < 0.01) and decreased significantly over time in both countries. Mortality rates declined from 1995 in both countries (APC = -1.5% in RoI, -1.3% in NI) at a time when PSA testing was not widespread.

Conclusions: Prostatic biopsy rates, rather than PSA testing per se, were the main driver of prostate cancer incidence. Because mortality decreases started before screening became widespread in RoI, and mortality remained low in NI, PSA testing is unlikely to be the explanation for declining mortality.
