An analysis of cosmic string breaking with the formation of black holes attached to the ends reveals a remarkable feature: the black holes can be correlated or uncorrelated. We find that, as a consequence, the number-of-states enhancement factor in the action governing the formation of uncorrelated black holes is twice the one for a correlated pair. We argue that when an uncorrelated pair forms at the ends of the string, the physics involved is more analogous to thermal nucleation than to particle-antiparticle creation. Also, we analyze the process of intercommuting strings induced by black hole annihilation and merging. Finally, we discuss the consequences for grand unified strings. The process whereby uncorrelated black holes are formed yields a rate which significantly improves over those previously considered, but still not enough to modify string cosmology. 1995 The American Physical Society.

Stable ternary transcription complexes assembled in vitro, using a HeLa whole-cell extract, have been isolated and visualized by electron microscopy. The formation of these stable complexes on the DNA fragment used as template, the 5' end region of the Xenopus laevis vitellogenin gene B2, depends on factors present in the whole-cell extract, RNA polymerase II and at least two nucleotides. Interestingly, bending in the DNA fragment was frequently observed at the binding site of RNA polymerase II. Dinucleotides that can prime initiation within a short sequence of approximately 10 contiguous nucleotides centered around the initiation site used in vivo, also favour the formation of stable complexes. In addition, pre-initiation complexes were isolated and it was shown that factors in the extract involved in their formation are more abundant than the RNA polymerase II molecules available for binding. The possible implication of this observation relative to the in vivo situation is discussed.

The aims of this study were to determine whether responses in myocardial blood flow (MBF) to the cold pressor testing (CPT) method noninvasively with PET correlate with an established and validated index of flow-dependent coronary vasomotion on quantitative angiography. METHODS: Fifty-six patients (57 +/- 6 y; 16 with hypertension, 10 with hypercholesterolemia, 8 smokers, and 22 without coronary risk factors) with normal coronary angiograms were studied. Biplanar end-diastolic images of a selected proximal segment of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) (n = 27) or left circumflex artery (LCx) (n = 29) were evaluated with quantitative coronary angiography in order to determine the CPT-induced changes of epicardial luminal area (LA, mm(2)). Within 20 d of coronary angiography, MBF in the LAD, LCx, and right coronary artery territory was measured with (13)N-ammonia and PET at baseline and during CPT. RESULTS: CPT induced on both study days comparable percent changes in the rate x pressure product (%DeltaRPP, 37% +/- 13% and 40% +/- 17%; P = not significant [NS]). For the entire study group, the epicardial LA decreased from 5.07 +/- 1.02 to 4.88 +/- 1.04 mm(2) (DeltaLA, -0.20 +/- 0.89 mm(2)) or by -2.19% +/- 17%, while MBF in the corresponding epicardial vessel segment increased from 0.76 +/- 0.16 to 1.03 +/- 0.33 mL x min(-1) x g(-1) (DeltaMBF, 0.27 +/- 0.25 mL x min(-1) x g(-1)) or 36% +/- 31% (P <or= 0.0001). However, in normal controls without coronary risk factors (n = 22), the epicardial LA increased from 5.01 +/- 1.07 to 5.88 +/- 0.89 mm(2) (19.06% +/- 8.9%) and MBF increased from 0.77 +/- 0.16 to 1.34 +/- 0.34 mL x min(-1) x g(-1) (74.08% +/- 23.5%) during CPT, whereas patients with coronary risk factors (n = 34) revealed a decrease of epicardial LA from 5.13 +/- 1.48 to 4.24 +/- 1.12 mm(2) (-15.94% +/- 12.2%) and a diminished MBF increase (from 0.76 +/- 0.20 to 0.83 +/- 0.25 mL x min(-1) x g(-1) or 10.91% +/- 19.8%) as compared with controls (P < 0.0001, respectively), despite comparable changes in the RPP (P = NS). In addition, there was a significant correlation (r = 0.87; P <or= 0.0001) between CPT-related percent changes in LA on quantitative angiography and in MBF as measured with PET. CONCLUSION: The observed close correlation between an angiographically established parameter of flow-dependent and, most likely, endothelium-mediated coronary vasomotion and PET-measured MBF further supports the validity and value of MBF responses to CPT as a noninvasively available index of coronary circulatory function.

Delamination and foundering of the lower continental crust (LCC) into the mantle is part of the crust-forming mechanism. However, knowledge of the composition and mineralogy of the preserved or delaminated LCC over geological timescales remains scarce. We provide a synopsis of recent research within the Kohistan arc (Pakistan) and demonstrate that hydrous and less hydrous liquid lines of descent related to flux assisted and decompression mantle melting, respectively, produce compositionally different lower crustal rocks. The argument refers to two lower crustal sections exposed in Kohistan, the older Southern Plutonic Complex (SPC) and the younger Chilas Complex. The SPC typifies a hydrous, high-pressure fractionation sequence of olivine-pyroxenes-garnet-Fe/Ti-oxide-amphibole-plagioclase. The Chilas Complex illustrates a less hydrous fractionation sequence of olivine-clinopyroxene-orthopyroxene-plagioclase-amphibole. Despite the similarity of the Chilas Complex rocks to proposed lower crust compositions, the less hydrous fractionation results in unrealistically small volumes of silica-rich rocks, precluding the Chilas Complex gabbros to represent the magmatic complement to the upper crust. The composition of the SPC lower crust differs markedly from bulk lower crust estimates, but is complementary to silica-rich rocks exposed along this section and in the Kohistan batholith. These observations inspire a composite model for the formation of continental crust (CC) where the negatively buoyant delaminated and the buoyant preserved lower continental crusts (LCC) differ in genesis, mineralogy, and composition. We propose that the upper, non-sedimentary subsequent removal of the complementary, negatively buoyant garnet-pyroxene-amphibole-plagioclase-rich cumulates. In contrast, the LCC, which is buoyant and preserved over geological timescales, is formed by less hydrous parental mantle melts. We suggest that the bulk continental crust composition is related to mixing of these petrologically not directly related end members. Published by Elsevier B.V.

The Transportation Equity Act of the 21st Century (TEA-21) (23 CFR) mandated environmental streamlining in order to improve transportation project delivery without compromising environmental protection. In accordance with TEA-21, the environmental review process for this project has been documented as a Streamlined Environmental Assessment (EA). This document addresses only those resources or features that apply to the project. This allowed study and discussion of resources present in the study area, rather than expend effort on resources that were either not present or not impacted. Although not all resources are discussed in the EA, they were considered during the planning process and are documented in the Streamlined Resource Summary, shown in Appendix A. The following table shows the resources considered during the environmental review for this project. The first column with a check means the resource is present in the project area. The second column with a check means the impact to the resource warrants more discussion in this document. The other listed resources have been reviewed and are included in the Streamlined Resource Summary.

Rats chronically cannulated in the carotid artery and the muscular branch of the femoral vein were subjected to a cold (4 °C) environment for up to 2 h. The changes in blood flow (measured with 46Sc microspheres) and arterio-venous differences in the concentrations of glucose, lactate, triacylglycerols and amino acids allowed the estimation of substrate (and energy) balances across the hindleg. Mean glucose uptake was 0.28mmol min21, mean lactate release was 0.33mmol min21 and the free fatty acid basal release of 0.31mmol min21 was practically zero upon exposure to the cold; the initial uptake of triacylglycerols gave place to a massive release following exposure. The measurement of PO·, PCO· and pH also allowed the estimation of oxygen, CO2 and bicarbonate balances and respiratory quotient changes across the hindleg. The contribution of amino acids to the energy balance of the hindleg was assumed to be low. These data were used to determine the sources of energy used to maintain muscle shivering with time. Three distinct phases were observed in hindleg substrate utilization. (1) The onset of shivering, with the use of glucose/glycogen and an increase in lactate efflux. Lipid oxidation was practically zero (respiratory quotient near 1), but the uptake of triacylglycerols from the blood remained unchanged. (2) A substrate-energy shift, with drastically decreased use of glucose/glycogen, and of lactate efflux; utilization of triacylglycerol as practically the sole source of energy (respiratory quotient approximately 0.7); decreasing uptake of triacylglycerol and increased tissue lipid mobilization. (3) The onset of a new heat-homeostasis setting for prolonged cold-exposure, with maintenance of muscle energy and heat production based on triacylglycerol utilization and efflux from the hindleg (muscle plus skin and subcutaneous adipose masses) contributing energy to help sustain heat production by the core organs and surrounding brown adipose tissue.

New biostratigraphic data significantly improve the age assignment of the Ladinian succession of Monte San Giorgio (UNESCO World Heritage List site, Southern Alps, Switzerland), whose world-famous fossil marine vertebrate faunas are now dated to the substage and zone levels. High-resolution single-zircon U-Pb dating was performed using ID-TIMS and chemical abrasion (CA) pre-treatment technique on volcanic ash layers intercalated in the biostratigraphically-defined intervals of the Meride Limestone. It yielded ages of 241.07 +/- 0.13 Ma (Cava superiore beds, P. gredleri Zone), 240.63 +/- 0.13 Ma (Cassina beds, P gredleri/P. archelaus transition Zone) and 239.51 +/- 0.15 Ma (Lower Kalkschieferzone, P. archelaus Zone). Our results suggest that the time interval including the vertebrate-bearing Middle Triassic section spans around 4 Myr and is thus significantly shorter than so far assumed. The San Giorgio Dolomite and the Meride Limestone correlate with intervals of the Buchenstein Formation and the Wengen Formation in the reference section at Bagolino, where the Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Ladinian was defined. The new radio-isotopic ages of the Meride Limestone are up to 2 Myr older than those published for the biostratigraphically-equivalent intervals at Bagolino but they are consistent with the recent re-dating of the underlying Besano Formation, also performed using the CA technique. Average sedimentation rates at Monte San Giorgio are by more than an order of magnitude higher compared to those assumed for the Buchenstein Formation, which formed under sediment-starved pelagic conditions, and reflect prevailing high subsidence and high carbonate mud supply from the adjoining Salvatore/Esino platforms. Finally, the high-resolution U-Pb ages allow a correlation of the vertebrate faunas of the Cava superiore/Cava inferiore beds with the marine vertebrate record of the Prosanto Formation (Upper Austroalpine), so far precluded by the poor biostratigraphic control of the latter.

"Technical challenges exist with infrastructure that can be addressed by nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods, such as detecting corrosion damage to reinforcing steel that anchor concrete bridge railings to bridge road decks. Moisture and chloride ions reach the anchors along the cold joint between the rails and deck, causing corrosion that weakens the anchors and ultimately the barriers. The Center for Nondestructive Evaluation at Iowa State University has experience in development of measurement techniques and new sensors using a variety of interrogating energies. This research evaluated feasibility of three technologies — x-ray radiation, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and magnetic flux leakage (MFL) — for detection and quantification of corrosion of embedded reinforcing steel. Controlled samples containing pristine reinforcing steel with and without epoxy and reinforcing steel with 25 percent and 50 percent section reduction were embedded in concrete at 2.5 in. deep for laboratory evaluation. Two of the techniques, GPR and MFL, were used in a limited field test on the Iowa Highway 210 Bridge over Interstate 35 in Story County. The methods provide useful and complementary information. GPR provides a rapid approach to identify reinforcing steel that has anomalous responses. MFL provides similar detection responses but could be optimized to provide more quantitative correlation to actual condition. Full implementation could use either GPR or MFL methods to identify areas of concern, followed by radiography to give a visual image of the actual condition, providing the final guidance for maintenance actions." Objective: Cooling is considered a panacea in burn injury. However, burn injuries are characterized by an ischemic zone prone to progression, a phenomenon that can substantially increase morbidity. Cold-induced vasoconstriction potentially aggravates ischemia and promotes progression. Therefore we compared the effect of warm (37°C) and cold (17°C) water on burn progression. Methods: The comb burn model creates 4 rectangular burned surfaces separated by 3 unburned interspaces that become necrotic if untreated. After heating in boiling water the template was applied for 60 seconds on 24 Wistar rats randomized into 3 groups: no treatment (CON); treatment for 20 minutes with cold water (17°C: CW) or warm water (37°C: WW). Burn progression in surface (planimetry) and Departmenth (histology), as well as microcirculatory perfusion (laser Doppler flowmetry) were assessed after 1h, as well as 1, 4, and 7 days. Results: Both CW and WW delayed burn progression without reducing the final burn Departmenth (deep dermis). In contrast, only WW but not CW increased dermal perfusion (81 ± 2% (WW) vs. 62 ± 2% (CW) and 63 ± 1% (CON), p< 0·05) already 1 hour after burn induction. The difference observed after one hour led to a complete flow recovery during the observation period and translated into increased interspace survival, respectively less necrosis with WW(65 ± 4% vs. 81 + 4% (CW) and 91 ± 2% (CON), p< 0·05) after 7 days. Conclusions: Application of warm water significantly improved dermal perfusion, increased interspace survival, and delayed burn progression.However it didn't alter the ultimate burn Departmenth of the actually burned area. Therefore, warm water can create a therapeutic window for targeted nonsurgical treatment of burn progression.
