The attrition of two potential oxygen-carriers for chemical-looping, 100. wt% mechanically-mixed, unsupported iron oxide (400-600 μm diameter) and 25. wt% copper oxide impregnated on alumina (600-900 μm diameter), has been studied. The rates of attrition of batches of these particles whilst they were being fluidised and subjected to successive cycles of reduction and oxidation were determined by measuring the rate of production of fine particles elutriated from the bed, as well as progressive changes in the distribution of particle sizes retained in the bed. The ability of the particles to withstand impacts was also investigated by examining the degree of fragmentation of 1. g of reacted particles of known size on projecting them at a target at various velocities. It was found that the mechanical strength of the iron oxide particles deteriorated significantly after repeated cycles of oxidation and reduction. Thus, the rate of elutriation increased ~35-fold between the 1st and 10th cycle. At an impact velocity of 38. m/s, the amount of fragmentation in the impact test, viz. mass fraction of particles after impact having a size less than that before impact, increased from ~2.3. wt% (fresh particles) to 98. wt% after the 10th cycle. The CuO particles, in comparison, were able to withstand repeated reaction: no signs of increased rates of elutriation or fragmentation were observed over ten cycles. These results highlight the importance of selecting a durable support for oxygen-carriers. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

In this article, we report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the luminescence dynamics of localized carriers in disordered InGaN/GaN quantum wells. The luminescence intensity of localized carriers is found to exhibit an unusual non-exponential decay. Adopting a new model taking the radiative recombination and phonon-assisted hopping transition between different localized states into account, which was recently developed by Rubel et al., the non-exponential decay behavior of the carriers can be quantitatively interpreted. Combining with precise structure characterization, the theoretical simulations show that the localization length of localized carriers is a key parameter governing their luminescence decay dynamics. Terbium ions were successfully incorporated in nano-sized zinc oxide particles with a doping concentration up to 3% by using a wet chemical route. Four narrow emission peaks of Tb3+ ions and a broad emission band of the surface states on ZnO nano-hosts were observed for all Tb-doped nanoparticles. Relaxation of carriers from excited states of ZnO hosts to rare earth (RE) dopants is disclosed by the fact that the emission intensity of Tb3+ centers increases with increased Tb content at the expense of the emission from surface defect states in ZnO matrix. By using three analytical phonon models in quantum wells-the slab model, the guided-mode model, and the improved version of the Huang-Zhu model [Phys. Rev. B 38, 13 377 (1998)], -and the phonon modes in bulk, the energy-loss rates of hot carriers due to the Frohlich potential scattering in GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum wells (MQW's) are calculated and compared to those obtained based on a microscopic dipole superlattice model. In the study, a special emphasis is put on the effects of the phonon models on the hot-carrier relaxation process when taking the hot-phonon effect into account. Our numerical results show that, the calculated energy-loss rates based on the slab model and on the improved Huang-Zhu model are almost the same when ignoring the hot-phonon effect; however, with the hot phonon effect considered, the calculated cooling rate as well as the hot phonon occupation number do depend upon the phonon models to be adopted. Out of the four analytical phonon models investigated, the improved Huang-Zhu model gives the results most close to the microscopic calculation, while the guided-mode model presents the poorest results. For hot electrons with a sheet density around 10(12)/cm(2), the slab model has been found to overestimate the hot-phonon effect by more than 40% compared to the Huang-Zhu model, and about 75% compared to the microscopic calculation in which the phonon dispersion is fully included. Our calculation also indicates that Nash's improved version [J. Lumin. 44, 315 (1989)] is necessary for evaluating the energy-loss rates in quantum wells of wider well width, because Huang-Zhu's original analytical formulas an only approximately orthogonal for optical phonons associated with small in-plane wave numbers. Using the Frohlich potential associated with realistic optical phonon modes in quantum well systems, the energy loss rates of hot electrons, holes, and electron-hole pairs are calculated, with special emphasis on the effects of carrier density, hot phonon population, quantum well width, and phonon dispersion on the hot-carrier relaxation process in quasi-two-dimensional systems. By photoluminescence measurements we find that at low temperature the linewidth of the excitonic luminescence broadens with increasing electron density in the wider well from a photoexcited type-I-type-II mixed GaAs/AlAs asymmetric double quantum well structure, which even makes the excitonic linewidth at 77 K larger than at 300 K above a certain excitation intensity. We verify that the broadening is due to the scattering of two-dimensional carriers to excitonic states. Based on the theory of the scattering of carriers to excitonic states, we calculate the broadening of the excitonic linewidth. Our experimental results are convincing for verifying the theoretical prediction. (C) 1995 American Institute of Physics.

This thesis comprises close textual analyses of Chicana author Helena María Viramontes' two published novels, Under the Feet of Jesus (1995) and Their Dogs Came With Them (2007). These analyses fall under three broad frameworks: space, time and body. Chapter One engages with the first of these frameworks, space, and explores concepts of cognitive mapping and heteroptopias. Chapter Two, which looks at time, employs theories of intertextuality and the palimpsest, while Chapter Three looks at the interrrelationship between mythology and images of the body in the texts. This study emerges five years after the publication of Viramontes' last novel, Their Dogs Came With Them, but offers fresh insight into the contribution of the author to both the Chicano literary tradition and also the U.S. canon through her critique of hegemonic power structures that suppress not only the voices of lower class ethnic citizens but also of ethnic writers. In particular, her work chastises the paucity of attention given to ethnic women writers in the U.S. This thesis reaffirms Viramontes' position as one of the most important writers living and writing in the U.S. today. It corroborates her work as a contestation against ethnic and gender suppression, and applauds the craftsmanship of her narrative style that delicately but decisively exposes the socio-political wrongs that occur in ocntemporary U.S. society.
