A practical synthesis of enantiopure bis-aziridines 11 and 15, bis-epoxides 12 and 17, and aziridino-epoxides 27 and 30 is reported using inexpensive d-mannitol as the starting material. The key transformation involves the reductive cleavage of bis-benzylidene acetal 3 to form dimesylate 4, which was further converted to monoazides and diazides followed by reduction, mesylation, and cyclization to furnish the required compounds in good yields.

A novel sonication-promoted Barbier reaction putatively generated the titled species from the corresponding naphthotriazinylmethyl chloride and magnesium in THF: its formal addition to a variety of carbonyl compounds in situ occurred in excellent yields. Subsequent catalytic hydrogenolysis of the triazine moiety demasked the amine, thus defining a route to various phenylethylamines (including the alkaloid 'mescaline'), or ethanolamines (in two cases), in excellent overall yields. Five new gallium arsenate compounds C2N2H10]Ga(H2AsO4)(HAsO4)(2)]center dot H2O, I; C2N2H10]Ga(OH)(AsO4)](2), II; C2N2H10]GaF(AsO4)](2), III; C3N2H12]Ga(OH)(AsO4)](2), IV; Ga2F3(AsO4)(HAsO4)]center dot 2H(3)O, V, have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and the structures determined employing single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. All the structures consist of octahedral gallium and tetrahedral arsenate units connected together forming a hierarchy of structures. Thus, one- (I), two- (II and IV) and three-dimensionally (III and V) extended structures have been observed. The Ga-O(H)/F-Ga connectivity in some of the structures suggests the coordination requirements posed by the octahedral gallium in these compounds. The observation of only one type of secondary building unit in the structures of III (SBU-4) and V (spiro-5) is unique and noteworthy. All the compounds have been characterized by a variety of techniques that include powder XRD, IR, and TGA. (C) 2010 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Research on conducting polymers, organic light emitting diodes and organic solar cells has been an exciting field for the past decade. The challenge with these organic devices is the long term stability of the active material. Organic materials are susceptible to chemical degradation in the presence of oxygen and moisture. The sensitivity of these materials towards oxygen and moisture makes it imperative to protect them by encapsulation. Polymer nanocomposites can be used as encapsulation materials in order to prevent material degradation. In the present work, amine functionalized alumina was used as a cross-linking and reinforcing material for the polymer matrix in order to fabricate the composites to be used for encapsulation of devices. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy were used to elucidate the surface chemistry. Thermogravimetric analysis techniques and CHN analysis were used to quantify grafting density of amine groups over the surface of the nanoparticles. Mechanical characterizations of the composites with various loadings were carried out with dynamic mechanical analyzer. It was observed that the composites have good thermal stability and mechanical flexibility, which are important for an encapsulant. The morphology of the composites was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy.

Diruthenium(II1) compounds, Ru20(02CAr)2(MeCN)4(PPh3)2(C104)(z1~) Hazn0d R U ~ O ( O ~ C A ~ ) ~(2() P(PA~r ~= )P~h,C6H4-p-OMe), were prepared by reacting R U ~ C I ( O ~ CaAnd~ P)P~h 3 in MeCN and characterized by analytical and spectral data. The molecular structures of 1 with Ar = Ph and of 2 with Ar = C&p-OMe were determined by X-ray crystallography. Both 1 and 2 have an (Ruz0(02CAr)z2t1 core that is analogous to the diiron core present in the oxidized form of the nonheme respiratory protein hemerythrin. The Ru-Ru distances of 3.237 (1) and 3.199 ( I ) A observed in 1 and 2, respectively, are similar to the M-M distances known in other model systems. The essentially diamagnetic nature of 1 and 2 is due to the presence of two strongly interacting t22 Ru"' centers. The intense colors of 1 (blue) and 2 (purple) are due to the charge-transfer transition involving an ( R ~ ~ ( f i - 0m)o~ie~ty.) The presence of labile MeCN and carboxylato ancillary ligands in I and 2, respectively, makes these systems reactive toward amine and heterocyclic bases.

In benzene solution, C60 and C70 interact weakly in the ground state with amines having favourable oxidation potentials. Picosecond time-resolved absorption measurements show that on photoexcilation, the weak complexes undergo charge separation to produce ion pairs which in turn undergo fast geminate recombination either to produce the triplet state of the fullerenes or give back the ground slate of the complex, depending on the oxidation potential of the amine. Free-ion yield is generally negligible.

Reactions of the bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)cyclotriphosphazene derivatives gem-N3P3(MeNCH(2)CH(2)O)(2)(dmp)(2) (1) and nongeminal cis-N3P3(OPh)(4)(dmp)(2) (2) with PdCl2 afford complexes of the type [PdCl2.(L)] (L = 1 or 2). In these complexes, the phosphazenes act as bidentate NN-donor ligands with the two pyrazolyl pyridinic nitrogen atoms bonded to the metal, thus forming a six- and an eight-membered chelate ring, respectively. The structures of 2 and [PdCl2.(2)] (4) have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Reaction of [Ru2O(O2CR)2(MeCN)4(PPh3)2](ClO4)2 (1) with 1,2-diaminoethane (em) in MeOH---H2O yielded a mixture of products, from which a purple diamagnetic and 1:2 electrolytic diruthenium(III) complex, [Ru2O(O2CR)2(en)2(PPh3)2](ClO4)2 (2), was isolated along with a trace by-product of [Ru2O(O2CR)2(en)2(PPh3)2](ClO4)(MeCONH) (3) (R = C6H4-p-X : X = H, a; OMe, b; Me, c). Complex 3b has been characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. The structure shows the presence of a (Ru2(?-O)(?-O2CR)22+)_core, with the metal centre bonded to an unidentate PPh3 and a bidentate chelating en terminal ligand. The RuRu distance and the RuORu angle in the core are 3.255(3) Å and 119.1(4)°. The amidate anion, formed presumably by nucleophilic attack of OH? on the MeCN ligand in complex 1, remains uncoordinated to the metal. In MeCN/0.1 M [NBun4]ClO4 complex 2 exhibits a nearly reversible Ru2III,III?Ru2III,IV couple near 0.9 V and an irreversible Ru2III,III?Ru2III,II process at ?0.6 V (vs S.C.E.). The mechanistic aspects of the substitution and nucleophilic reactions in the formation of complexes 2 and 3 are discussed. References

Blue coloured, unstable, essentially diamagnetic and non-electrolytic diruthenium(III) complexes of the formation [Ru2O(O2CR)4(en)2(PPh3)2] were prepared by reacting [Ru2O(O2CR)4(PPh3)2] with 1,2-diaminoethane (en) in CH2Cl2 (R = C6H4-p-X; X = H, Me and OMe). The molecular structure of the complexes is proposed as [{(?1-O2CR)(?1-en)(PPH3)Ru}2(?-O)(?-O2CR)2] based on the 1H NMR spectral data. The electronic spectra of the complexes display a band near 569 nm with a shoulder at 630 nm. In CH2Cl2-0.1 M [Bun4N]ClO4, the complexes exhibit redox couples Ru2III,III/Ru2III,IV and Ru2III,IV/Ru2IV,IV near 0.1 and 1.2 V (vs SCE), respectively. The potentials are the lowest among diruthenium(III) complexes with a similar core structure.

N,N',N `'-Tris(2-anisyl)guanidine, (ArNH)(2)C=NAr (Ar = 2-(MeO)C6H4), was cyclopallaclated with Pd(OC(O)R)(2) (R = Me, CF3) in toluene at 70 degrees C to afford palladacycles Pd{kappa(2)(C,N)-C6H3-(OMe)-3(NHC(NHAr)(=NAr))-2}(mu-OC(O)R)](2)(R = Me (1a) and CF3 (1b)) in 87% and 95% yield, respectively. Palladacycle 1a was subjected to a metathetical reaction with LiBr in aqueous ethanol at 78 degrees C to afford palladacycle Pd{kappa(2)(C,N)-C6H3(OMe)-3(NHC(NHAr)(=NAr))-2}(mu-Br)](2) (2) in 90% yield. Palladacycle 2 was subjected to a bridge-splitting reaction with Lewis bases in CH2Cl2 to afford the monomeric palladacycles Pd{kappa(2)(C,N)-C6H3(OMe)-3(NHC(NHAr)(=NAr))-2}Br(L)] (L = 2,6-Me2C5H3N (3a), 2,4-Me2C5H3N (3b), 3,5-Me2C5H3N (3c), XyNC (Xy = 2,6-Me2C6H3; 4a), (BuNC)-Bu-t (4b), and PPh3 (5)) in 87-95% yield. Palladacycle 2 upon reaction with 2 equiv of XyNC in CH2Cl2 afforded an unanticipated palladacycle, Pd{kappa(2)(C,N)-C(=NXy)(C6H3(OMe)-4)-2(N=C-(NH Ar)(2))-3} Br(CNXy)] (6) in 93% yield, and the driving force for the formation of 6 was ascribed to a ring contraction followed by amine-imine tautomerization. Palladacycles 1 a,b revealed a dimeric transoid in-in conformation with ``open book'' framework in the solid state. In solution, 1 a exhibited a fluxional behavior ascribed to the six-membered ``(C,N)Pd'' ring inversion and partly dissociates to the pincer type and kappa(2)-O,O'-OAc monomeric palladacycles by an anchimerically assisted acetate cleavage process as studied by variable-temperature H-1 NMR data. Palladacycles 3a,b revealed a unique trans configuration around the palladium with lutidine being placed trans to the Pd-C bond, whereas cis stereochemistry was observed between the Pd-C bond and the Lewis base in 4a (as determined by X-ray diffraction data) and 5 (as determined by P-31 and C-13 NMR data). The aforementioned stereochemical difference was explained by invoking relative hardness/softness of the donor atoms around the palladium center. In solution, palladacycles 3a-c exist as a mixture of two interconverting boat conformers via a planar intermediate without any bond breaking due to the six-membered ``(C,N)Pd'' ring inversion, whereas palladacycles 4a,b and 5 exist as a single isomer, as deduced from detailed H-1 NMR studies.

The reaction of 2-formylbenzenesulfonyl chloride 1 and its pseudo isomer 2 with primary amines give either the corresponding sulfonamido Schiff bases or the corresponding 2-formylbenzenesulfonamide depending on the concentration of the amine used. The derivatives exist as an equilibrium mixture of the corresponding sulfonamide and 2-alkyl-3-hydroxy(or 3-aminoalkyl)-benzisothiazole-1,1-dioxide. Spectroscopic studies suggest that 2-formylbenzenesulfonamides exist as benzisothiazole-1,1-dioxides in the solid state, as a mixture of 2-formylbenzenesulfonamide and the corresponding benzisothiazole-1,1-dioxide in solution and as 2-formyl-benzenesulfonamides in the gas phase.

Reactions of the bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)cyclotriphosphazenes gem-N3P3Ph4(C3HN2Me2)2 (L1) and N3P3(MeNCH2CH2O)2(C3HN2Me2)2 (L2) with [M(CO)6] (M = Mo or W) afford complexes of the type [M(CO)3L] (L = L1 or L2), which have been characterised by IR and NMR spectroscopic data. The structures of [Mo(CO)3L1], [W(CO)3L2] and the ligand L2 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The phosphazenes act as novel tridentate NNN-donor ligands with two pyrazolyl nitrogen atoms and one phosphazene ring nitrogen atom bonded to the metal atom
