Our recent study reported that conformation change of granule-associated Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) may influence the role of the protein controlling colloid deposition in porous media (Flynn et al., 2012). The present study conceptualized the observed phenomena with an ellipsoid morphology model, describing BSA as an ellipsoid taking a side-on or end-on conformation on granular surface, and identified the following processes: (1) at low adsorbed concentrations, BSA exhibited a side-on conformation blocking colloid deposition; (2) at high adsorbed concentrations, BSA adapted to an end-on conformation promoted colloid deposition; and (3) colloid deposition on the BSA layer may progressively generate end-on molecules (sites) by conformation change of side-on BSA, resulting in sustained increasing deposition rates. Generally, the protein layer lowered colloid attenuation by the porous medium, suggesting the overall effect of BSA was inhibitory at the experimental time scale. A mathematical model was developed to interpret the ripening curves. Modeling analysis identified the site generation efficiency of colloid as a control on the ripening rate (declining rate in colloid concentrations), and this efficiency was higher for BSA adsorbed from a more dilute BSA solution. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the daily use of 5% tea tree oil (TTO) body wash (Novabac 5% Skin Wash) compared with standard care [Johnson's Baby Softwash (JBS)] had a lower incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization.

PATIENTS: The study setting was two intensive care units (ICUs; mixed medical, surgical and trauma) in Northern Ireland between October 2007 and July 2009. The study population comprised 391 patients who were randomized to JBS or TTO body wash.

METHODS: This was a Phase 2/3, prospective, open-label, randomized, controlled trial. Trial registration: ISRCTN65190967. The primary outcome was new MRSA colonization during ICU stay. Secondary outcomes included the incidence of MRSA bacteraemia and maximum increase in sequential organ failure assessment score.

RESULTS: A total of 445 patients were randomized to the study. After randomization, 54 patients were withdrawn; 30 because of a positive MRSA screen at study entry, 11 due to lack of consent, 11 were inappropriately randomized and 2 had adverse reactions. Thirty-nine (10%) patients developed new MRSA colonization (JBS n?=?22, 11.2%; TTO body wash n?=?17, 8.7%). The difference in percentage colonized (2.5%, 95% CI -?8.95 to 3.94; P?=?0.50) was not significant. The mean maximum increase in sequential organ failure assessment score was not significant (JBS 1.44, SD 1.92; TTO body wash 1.28, SD 1.79; P?=?0.85) and no study patients developed MRSA bacteraemia.

CONCLUSIONS: Compared with JBS, TTO body wash cannot be recommended as an effective means of reducing MRSA colonization.

Purpose: To evaluate the tamponade effect on the retina of a heavier-than-water silicone oil mixture and to compare it with the effect of silicone oil. Methods: Prospective, non-randomised, comparative pilot study. Phakic/pseudophakic patients with retinal detachment undergoing vitrectomy with Densiron 68 or silicone oil were recruited. The 'separation volume', defined as the relative volume of the space between intraocular tamponade agent and retina, was estimated using magnetic resonance imaging in both groups and compared. Results: Nine participants were included; 4 received silicone oil and 5 Densiron 68. The mean separation volume was statistically significantly larger in the silicone oil group (0.477 ± 0.419 cm ) than in the Densiron group (0.042 ± 0.013 cm ; p = 0.014). Conclusions: In this study Densiron achieved an excellent tamponade effect in the retina. © 2011 S. Karger AG, Basel.

Purpose. To describe endothelial changes associated with emulsified silicone oil. Methods. Report of a case. Results. A 77-year-old man had multiple and diffuse clear vesicles on the endothelium of his left eye (LE). The cornea was clear and thin. He had undergone pars plana vitrectomy and intraocular silicone oil injection 5 years before presentation. Specular microscopy revealed numerous small bubbles of emulsified silicone oil and a mild degree of endothelial damage. Conclusion. Emulsified silicone oil can adhere to the endothelium and induce an apparent droplet-like endotheliopathy.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the responses of phase I and II biotransformation enzymes and levels of PAHs in the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Lamarck, 1819) collected from three sites at different distance from an oil refinery. Phase I enzyme activities as NAD(P)H-cyt c red, NADH ferry red, B(a)PMO and phase II as UDPGT. GST were measured in digestive gland while 16 PAHs (US-EPA) in whole soft tissue. An added value to the data obtained in the present study rely on the RDA analysis which showed close correlations between PAHs levels and phase I enzyme activities in mussels collected in front of the refinery. And again a significant spatial correlation between B(a)P levels and NADPH-cyt c red activities was observed using linear models. No differences among sites for B(a) PMO and phase II GST activities were observed, while the application of UDPGT as biomarkers requires further investigation. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. A number of tetraalkylammonium and tetraalkylphosphonium amino acid based ionic liquids (AAILs) have been successfully used and recycled for the reactive extraction of naphthenic acids from crude oil and crude oil distillates. Spectral studies show that the mechanism by which this occurs is through the formation of a zwitterionic complex. Therein, the amino acid anion plays a key role in the formation of this complex. One of the many results of the Global Financial Crisis was the insight that the financial sector is under-taxed compared to other industries. In light of the huge bailouts and continued subsidies for financial institutions that are characterized as too-big-to-fail demands came on the agenda to make finance pay for the mega-crisis it caused. The most prominent examples of such taxes are a Financial Transaction Tax (FTT) and a Financial Activities Tax (FAT). Possible effects of such taxes on the economic constitution and increasingly in particular on the European Single Market have been discussed controversially over the last decades already. Especially with the decision of eleven EU member states to adapt an FTT using the enhanced cooperation procedure a number of additional legal challenges for implementing such a tax have emerged. This paper analyzes how tax measures of indirectly regulating the financial industry differ, what legal challenges they pose, and what their overall contribution would be in making the financial system more stable and resilient. It also analyzes the legal arguments against enhanced cooperation in this area and the legal issues related to the British lawsuit against the Commission’s Directive proposal in the European Court of Justice on grounds of the extra-territoriality application of tax. The paper concludes that the feasibility of an FTT is legally sound and given the FTT’s advantages over a FAT the EU Directive should be implemented as a first step for a European-wide FTT. However, significant uncertainties about its implementation remain at this stage.

EPB tunnelling requires the application of soil conditioning to increase its field of applicability particularly for cohesionless soils. Choosing the most suitable conditioning set for the various soils requires the use of a feasible laboratory test which can permit to define the characteristics of the conditioned soils and provide measurable data. A series of tests has been carried out using a laboratory screw conveyor device which was designed for this purpose and which simulates the extraction of the spoil from a pressure chamber in a similar way as in EPB tunnelling. The tested soils were medium-grain sands with varying amounts of silt and the tested conditioned mixtures were obtained with different water contents and amounts of foam. A simple slump test was also used to analyze the global characteristics of the conditioned soils. The test has shown that the proposed laboratory procedure permits a quantitative comparison to be made between different conditioning amounts and agents on the basis of measurable parameters. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. This paper investigates the pull-out behaviour (particularly the bearing resistance) of a steel grid reinforcement embedded in silty sand using laboratory tests and numerical analyses. It is demonstrated that the various common analytical equations for calculating the bearing component of pull-out resistance give a wide range of calculated values, up to about 200% disparity. The disparity will increase further if the issue of whether to use the peak or critical state friction angle is brought in. Furthermore, these equations suggest that the bearing resistance factor, N, is only a function of soil friction angle which is not consistent with some design guidelines. In this investigation, a series of large scale laboratory pull-out tests under different test pressures were conducted. The test results unambiguously confirmed that the N factor is a function of test pressure. A modified equation for calculating N is also proposed. To have more in-depth understanding of the pull-out behaviour, the tests were modelled numerically. The input parameters for the numerical analysis were obtained from laboratory triaxial tests. The analysis results were compared with the experimental results. Good agreement between experimental and numerical results was achieved if the strain-softening behaviour from peak strength to critical state condition was captured by the soil model used. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Refined vegetable oils are widely used in the food industry as ingredients or components in many processed food products in the form of oil blends. To date, the generic term 'vegetable oil' has been used in the labelling of food containing oil blends. With the introduction of new EU Regulation for Food Information (1169/2011) due to take effect in 2014, the oil species used must be clearly identified on the package and there is a need for development of fit for purpose methodology for industry and regulators alike to verify the oil species present in a product. The available methodologies that may be employed to authenticate the botanical origin of a vegetable oil admixture were reviewed and evaluated. The majority of the sources however, described techniques applied to crude vegetable oils such as olive oil due to the lack of refined vegetable oil focused studies. Nevertheless, DNA based typing methods and stable isotopes procedures were found not suitable for this particular purpose due to several issues. Only a small number of specific chromatographic and spectroscopic fingerprinting methods in either targeted or untargeted mode were found to be applicable in potentially providing a solution to this complex authenticity problem. Applied as a single method in isolation, these techniques would be able to give limited information on the oils identity as signals obtained for various oil types may well be overlapping. Therefore, more complex and combined approaches are likely to be needed to identify the oil species present in oil blends employing a stepwise approach in combination with advanced chemometrics. Options to provide such a methodology are outlined in the current study.
