El presente trabajo propone una reflexión en torno a lo andino en tres novelas de Gabriel García Márquez y Mario Vargas Llosa, desde la perspectiva de los estudios de la cultura. No obstante, es la interpretación-confrontación de las obras, la que permite postular y dar cuerpo a una serie de intuiciones que se han ido decantando a lo largo de la lectura de estos dos escritores, representativos para la literatura y la cultura hispanoamericanas. El texto está dividido en tres capítulos: el primero intenta una conceptualización acerca de qué es lo andino, y desde qué arista es tomado en este esfuerzo, también muestra un breve rastreo de cómo lo andino se halla nombrado en la literatura previa al boom, para desembocar en una disertación sobre el boom como tal. El segundo, se ocupa de la lectura de las obras, teniendo en cuenta lo expuesto en los ítems anteriores. El tercero, coloca sobre la mesa una serie de hallazgos y caminos de discusión que pueden alentar otro u otros ejercicios académicos.

Se presenta el desarrollo que ha tenido el Sistema Interamericano de Protección de Derechos Humanos en el país. Este sistema se ha pronunciado sobre la situación de los derechos humanos en Ecuador, desde la década de los 90, dentro de procedimientos de peticiones individuales por desapariciones forzadas, ejecuciones extrajudiciales, tortura y debido proceso. Además ha emitido medidas cautelares con la finalidad de proteger a varias personas y efectúo una visita in loco emitiendo varias recomendaciones, cuyo cumplimiento ha supervisado a través de varios informes de seguimiento. En el año 2009, ha conocido y resuelto algunos casos. Finaliza haciendo un análisis de los límites y retos que presenta este sistema.

The accurate prediction of storms is vital to the oil and gas sector for the management of their operations. An overview of research exploring the prediction of storms by ensemble prediction systems is presented and its application to the oil and gas sector is discussed. The analysis method used requires larger amounts of data storage and computer processing time than other more conventional analysis methods. To overcome these difficulties eScience techniques have been utilised. These techniques potentially have applications to the oil and gas sector to help incorporate environmental data into their information systems
Correlating Bayesian date estimates with climatic events and domestication using a bovine case study

The tribe Bovini contains a number of commercially and culturally important species, such as cattle. Understanding their evolutionary time scale is important for distinguishing between post-glacial and domestication-associated population expansions, but estimates of bovine divergence times have been hindered by a lack of reliable calibration points. We present a Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of 481 mitochondrial D-loop sequences, including 228 radiocarbon-dated ancient DNA sequences, using a multi-demographic coalescent model. By employing the radiocarbon dates as internal calibrations, we co-estimate the bovine phylogeny and divergence times in a relaxed-clock framework. The analysis yields evidence for significant population expansions in both taurine and zebu cattle, European aurochs and yak clades. The divergence age estimates support domestication-associated expansion times (less than 12 kyr) for the major haplogroups of cattle. We compare the molecular and palaeontological estimates for the Bison-Bos divergence.

Experimental acoustic measurements on sandstone rocks at both sonic and ultrasonic frequencies show that fluid saturation can cause a noticeable change in both the dynamic bulk and shear elastic moduli of sandstones. We observed that the change in dynamic shear modulus upon fluid saturation is highly dependent on the type of saturant, its viscosity, rock microstructure, and applied pressures. Frequency dispersion has some influence on dynamic elastic moduli too, but its effect is limited to the ultrasonic frequency ranges and above. We propose that viscous coupling, reduction in free surface energy, and, to a limited extent, frequency dispersion due to both local and global flow are the main mechanisms responsible for the change in dynamic shear elastic modulus upon fluid saturation and substitution, and we quantify influences.

The fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici (Ggt), commonly known as the take-all fungus, causes damage to roots of wheat and barley that limits crop growth and causes loss of yield. There was little knowledge on the within-field spatial variation of take-all and relations with features in the growing crop, selected soil properties and spectral information from remotely sensed imagery. Geostatistical analyses showed that take-all, chlorosis and leaf area index had similar patchy distributions. Many of the spectral bands from a hyperspectral image also had similar spatial patterns to take-all and chlorosis. Relations between take-all and mineral nitrogen, elevation and pH were generally weaker.

The paper discusses the observed and projected warming in the Caucasus region and its implications for glacier melt, water availability and potential hazards. A strong positive trend in summer air temperatures of 0.05 degrees C year(-1) is observed in the high-altitude areas (above 2000 m) providing for a strong glacier melt. A widespread glacier retreat has also been reported between 1985 and 2000, with an average rate of 8 m year(-1). A warming of 5-7 degrees C is projected for the Sum mer months in the 2071-2100 period under the A2 emission group of scenarios, Suggesting that enhanced glacier melt and a changing water balance can be expected.

The article considers screening human populations with two screening tests. If any of the two tests is positive, then full evaluation of the disease status is undertaken; however, if both diagnostic tests are negative, then disease status remains unknown. This procedure leads to a data constellation in which, for each disease status, the 2 × 2 table associated with the two diagnostic tests used in screening has exactly one empty, unknown cell. To estimate the unobserved cell counts, previous approaches assume independence of the two diagnostic tests and use specific models, including the special mixture model of Walter or unconstrained capture–recapture estimates. Often, as is also demonstrated in this article by means of a simple test, the independence of the two screening tests is not supported by the data. Two new estimators are suggested that allow associations of the screening test, although the form of association must be assumed to be homogeneous over disease status. These estimators are modifications of the simple capture–recapture estimator and easy to construct. The estimators are investigated for several screening studies with fully evaluated disease status in which the superior behavior of the new estimators compared to the previous conventional ones can be shown. Finally, the performance of the new estimators is compared with maximum likelihood estimators, which are more difficult to obtain in these models. The results indicate the loss of efficiency as minor.
