The Knowledge Management represents a new vision of management of organizations, since information and knowledge are the main factors of competitiveness, today, of individuals, organizations and nations. The university plays a key role alongside with government and industry in the generation of technological innovations that can help the society progress, and the University Library is an important disseminator of scientific information. The main challenges of organizations involved in Knowledge Management are concentrated in the management of cultural and behavioral changes of its human resources and in creating an environment conducive to create, use and share information and knowledge. Within this context the question arises: How do University Libraries in Brazil and Portugal employ people management and knowledge management in order to improve the quality of its services and the productivity of their institutions? To answer it we developed a descriptive-analytic research, using the method of comparative study, analyzing 69 organizations. According to the survey results, the people management issues were the worst assessed in relation to other aspects of Knowledge Management, showing a weak dissemination of these practices in the University Libraries of Brazil and Portugal and the great need for initiatives to help develop them.

In 2010, an accident occurred in Americana-SP, Brazil, involving two trains and one bus on a Grade Crossing, when 10 people died and 17 were injured including workers. This paper aims to analyze the accident using the Model of Analysis and Prevention of Work Accidents (MAPA). The method provides observation of work, interviews and analysis of documents to understand precedents of the event in the following stages: to understand the usual work from the involved people, the changes occurred in the system, the operation of barriers, managerial and organizational aspects. By the end, measures are suggested to avoid new occurrences. The accident took place at night in a site with insufficient lighting. The working conditions of bus drivers, train operators and watchmen are inadequate. There were only symbolic barriers (visual and acoustic signals) triggered manually by watchman upon train operator radio communication. The fragility of the barrier system associated to poor lighting and short time to trigger the signaling seem to play a critical role in the event. Contrary to the official report which resulted in guilt of the bus driver, the conclusion of the paper emphasizes the fragility of the safety system and the need of level crossing reproject.

In this study, particulate matter (PM) were characterized from a place impacted by heavy-duty vehicles (Bus Station) fuelled with diesel/biodiesel fuel blend (B3) in the city of Londrina, Brazil. Sixteen priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) concentrations were analyzed in the samples by their association with atmospheric PM, mass size distributions and major ions (fluorite, chloride, bromide, nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, nitrite, oxalate; fumarate, formate, succinate and acetate; lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and ammonium). Results indicate that major ions represented 21.2% particulate matter mass. Nitrate, sulfate, and ammonium, respectively, presented the highest concentration levels, indicating that biodiesel may also be a significant source for these ions, especially nitrate. Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene and indeno[1,2,3,-cd]pyrene were the main PAH found, and a higher fraction of PAH particles was found in diameters lower than 0.25 mu m in Londrina bus station. The fine and ultrafine particles were dominant among the PM evaluated, suggesting that biodiesel decreases the total PAH emission. However, it does also increase the fraction of fine and ultrafine particles when compared to diesel.

J Strength Cond Res 26(3): 811-817, 2012-This study examined the effects of a workplace-based resistance training intervention on different health-, fitness-, and work-related measures in untrained men (bus drivers). The subjects were recruited from a bus company and divided into a training (n = 48) and control (n = 48) groups after initial prescreening. The training group performed a 24-week resistance training program, whereas the control group maintained their normal daily activities. Each group was assessed for body composition, blood pressure (BP), pain incidence, muscular endurance, and flexibility before and after the 24-week period. Work absenteeism was also recorded during this period and after a 12-week follow-up phase. In general, no body composition changes were identified in either group. In the training group, a significant reduction in BP and pain incidence, along with improvements in muscle endurance and flexibility were seen after 24 weeks (p < 0.05). There were no changes in these parameters in the control group, and the between-group differences were all significant (p < 0.05). A reduction in worker absenteeism rate was also noted in the training (vs. control) group during both the interventional and follow-up periods (p < 0.05). In conclusion, it was found that a periodized resistance training intervention performed within the workplace improved different aspects of health and fitness in untrained men, thereby potentially providing other work-related benefits. Thus, both employers and employees may benefit from the setup, promotion, and support of a work-based physical activity program involving resistance training.

In this paper, a new algebraic-graph method for identification of islanding in power system grids is proposed. The proposed method identifies all the possible cases of islanding, due to the loss of a equipment, by means of a factorization of the bus-branch incidence matrix. The main features of this new method include: (i) simple implementation, (ii) high speed, (iii) real-time adaptability, (iv) identification of all islanding cases and (v) identification of the buses that compose each island in case of island formation. The method was successfully tested on large-scale systems such as the reduced south Brazilian system (45 buses/72 branches) and the south-southeast Brazilian system (810 buses/1340 branches). The aim of solving the Optimal Power Flow problem is to determine the optimal state of an electric power transmission system, that is, the voltage magnitude and phase angles and the tap ratios of the transformers that optimize the performance of a given system, while satisfying its physical and operating constraints. The Optimal Power Flow problem is modeled as a large-scale mixed-discrete nonlinear programming problem. This paper proposes a method for handling the discrete variables of the Optimal Power Flow problem. A penalty function is presented. Due to the inclusion of the penalty function into the objective function, a sequence of nonlinear programming problems with only continuous variables is obtained and the solutions of these problems converge to a solution of the mixed problem. The obtained nonlinear programming problems are solved by a Primal-Dual Logarithmic-Barrier Method. Numerical tests using the IEEE 14, 30, 118 and 300-Bus test systems indicate that the method is efficient. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Em 1989, Brandão descrevia o Triângulo Mineiro como “fruto da ambiguidade de seu estigma de fazer parte de Minas, mas ser articulada economicamente a São Paulo.” A mesorregião do Triângulo Mineiro e Alto Paranaíba, faz fronteira com os estados de Goiás, São Paulo e Mato Grosso do Sul, interligando também com a Central Mineira e com o Oeste de Minas, sendo a característica de “rota de passagem” como principal fator do desenvolvimento de sua economia. O posicionamento estratégico da região, como eixo de ligação da capital paulista ao chamado Brasil Central, pode ser considerado um importante fator no estreitamento dos laços entre a região e São Paulo, somado ao sentimento de não pertencimento do Triângulo ao estado de Minas Gerais, o qual resultou por décadas em manifestações separatistas na região. A arquitetura moderna produzida no Triângulo Mineiro e Alto Paranaíba deu um salto significativo no momento de construção da nova capital federal, em finais da década de 1950, onde o papel de mediação, principalmente da cidade de Uberlândia, no processo de infra-estruturação da nova cidade foi determinante nos avanços construtivos do Triângulo. Esse momento coincidiu com o início do processo de verticalização das principais cidades da região e o aumento de arquitetos residentes nas cidades. Por meio, em especial, dos edifícios para as estações ferroviárias da Cia Mogiana, de Oswaldo Arthur Bratke em Uberaba e Uberlândia (déc. 1960) e do Terminal Rodoviário Presidente Castelo Branco em Uberlândia, dos arquitetos Fernando Graça, Flávio Almada e Ivan Curpertino (1970), este trabalho objetiva conduzir uma discussão acerca da produção de arquitetura moderna no Triângulo Mineiro ligada às estratégias de transportes intermunicipais como própria cultura de desenvolvimento econômico da região. Nos interessa valer do debate entre o uso da estética brutalista, e da própria escolha por uma arquitetura moderna, como artifício no plano de desenvolvimento das empresas de transporte, e dos governos locais. Sobretudo, discutir as interlocuções do Triângulo Mineiro com São Paulo, rebatendo-as na formação do conjunto arquitetonico moderno produzido na região. Este trabalho é fruto da pesquisa de mestrado da autora cujo tema central é a difusão da arquitetura moderna no Triângulo Mineiro e Alto Paranaíba, pelo Iau/Usp, e financiado pela Capes.

The behavior of composed Web services depends on the results of the invoked services; unexpected behavior of one of the invoked services can threat the correct execution of an entire composition. This paper proposes an event-based approach to black-box testing of Web service compositions based on event sequence graphs, which are extended by facilities to deal not only with service behavior under regular circumstances (i.e., where cooperating services are working as expected) but also with their behavior in undesirable situations (i.e., where cooperating services are not working as expected). Furthermore, the approach can be used independently of artifacts (e.g., Business Process Execution Language) or type of composition (orchestration/choreography). A large case study, based on a commercial Web application, demonstrates the feasibility of the approach and analyzes its characteristics. Test generation and execution are supported by dedicated tools. Especially, the use of an enterprise service bus for test execution is noteworthy and differs from other approaches. The results of the case study encourage to suggest that the new approach has the power to detect faults systematically, performing properly even with complex and large compositions. TouCAN es una librería creada en su primera versión (v1) como Trabajos de Fin de Grado en Ingeniería Informática por John Wu Wu y Jose Lareo Domínguez bajo la tutorización de los profesores Antonio C. Domínguez Brito y Jorge Cabrera Gámez. Define un protocolo de comunicación para la interconexión de una red de microcontroladores basados en la plataforma de prototipado electrónico Arduino. Trabaja sobre el protocolo de comunicación CAN Bus (Controller Area Network), ampliamente utilizado por la industria desde la década de los 80. TouCAN destaca por ser una librería ligera, potente y amigable. El objetivo principal de este Trabajo Final de Grado en Ingeniería Informática consiste en proporcionar robustez a la librería incorporando mejoras y nuevas funcionalidades. Entre las principales mejoras destacar el control frente a fallos de comunicación, reinicio o reset de los microcontroladores, así como la caída de los mismos. Otra característica incluida en esta revisión consiste en la asignación dinámica deidentificadores de dispositivos que conforman un sistema empotrado distribuido. Permitiendo la posibilidad de “conexión en caliente” de nuevos nodos microcontroladores a la red de forma dinámica. A estos cambios, también se han añadido mejoras en la interfaz de la API que simplifica el uso y aprendizaje de la misma. Así como una nueva herramienta denominada TouCANSniffer que permite capturar y analizar todo el tráfico generado en la red. Las nuevas características y funcionalidades añadidas en TouCAN v2 proporcionan el potencial necesario para ser considerada seriamente como base de cualquier nuevo proyecto que integre una red distribuida de microcontroladores.
