Piper cernuum is a native plant of the Brazilian Atlantic rain forest. This work studies the distribution of allozyme diversity in P. cernuum natural populations in order to establish a strategy for sustainable management and conservation. Leaf samples were collected in two Brazilian states. High divergences among populations (F-SR = 0.380) and low divergences among regions (F-RT = -0.069) and among gaps of the same population (F-GT = 0.062) were found. No association between the geographical variation and the genetic distance was detected. An excess of heterozygotes was detected in the populations (F-IS = -0.170), suggesting selection in favor of heterozygotes. The results, and the fact that the species depends on constant gap formation for maintenance of its dynamism, suggest that the founder effect is largely responsible for the structuring of populations. For sustainable management, the maintenance of plants/reproductive branches in the gaps is of major importance. The genotypes produced in these gaps are responsible for the establishment of new gaps and are the foundation for new populations, maintaining the dynamics of allele movement.

Specimens of Hyla nana and Hyla sanborni from a syntopic population were studied cytogenetically. These species are morphologically very similar and are frequently misidentified, confused with each other. Both species had a diploid chromosome number, 2n = 30. However, the karyotypes of H. nana and H. sanborni differed considerably from each other in the number of submetacentric and telocentric chromosomes. The two species also differed in their primary NOR-bearing chromosomes (metacentric pair 13 in H. nana and telocentric pair 12 in H. sanborni). Additional nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) were detected by Ag-NOR staining and FISH in chromosome pairs 1, 5, 6, 12, and 14 in seven specimens of H. nana. Thus, a total of six patterns of NOR were identified. These differences in karyotype and in NOR location allowed the unambiguous identification of syntopic individuals of the two species. However, the chromosomal morphology of both species differed from that reported for populations from other geographic regions, suggesting that a systematic reevaluation of this group of Hyla may be necessary.

The kinetics of the reactions of Ru(II) complexes with CS2N- 3 ions were studied spectrophotometrically. The formation rate constants data for trans-[Ru(NH3)4L(CS2N3)] are 2.2 × 102, 1.8 × 10 and 1.3 × 102 M-1 s-1 for L = SO2- 3, HSO- 3 and P(OEt)3), respectively [μ = 1.0 M (NaCF3COO), 25°C]. Under the same experimental conditions, the values of k-1 (specific rate for the aquation reaction) are 1.5 × 10-2, 5.0 × 10-2 and 4.5 × 10 s-1 for L = SO2- 3, HSO- 3 and P(OEt)3, respectively. The free-energy change (ΔG≠) for the systems where L = P(OEt)3 and SO2- 3 are in agreement within the experimental error. It was observed that the affinity of the CS2N- 3 ion decreases with the increasing π-acidity of the auxiliary ligand L. The order of affinity of the CS2N- 3 ion for the Ru(II) center studies is SO2- 3 > HSO- 3 > P(OEt)3 >SO2. © 1986.

The operator S in Fock space which describes the scattering and particle production processes in an external time-dependent electromagnetic potential A can be constructed from the one-particle S-matrix up to a physical phase λ[A]. In this work we determine this phase for QED in (2 + 1) dimensions by means of causality and show that no ultraviolet divergences arise, in contrast to the usual formalism of QED3.

The application of on-line C30-reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is described for the analysis of tetraglycosylated flavonoids in aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of the leaves of Maytenus aquifolium (Celastraceae). Triacontyl stationary phases showed adequate separation for on-line 1H-NMR measurements at 600 MHz and allowed the characterisation of these flavonoids by detection of both aromatic and anomeric proton signals. Chromobacterium violaceum is one of millions of species of free-living microorganisms that populate the soil and water in the extant areas of tropical biodiversity around the world. Its complete genome sequence reveals (i) extensive alternative pathways for energy generation, (ii) ≈500 ORFs for transport-related proteins, (iii) complex and extensive systems for stress adaptation and motility, and (iv) wide-spread utilization of quorum sensing for control of inducible systems, all of which underpin the versatility and adaptability of the organism. The genome also contains extensive but incomplete arrays of ORFs coding for proteins associated with mammalian pathogenicity, possibly involved in the occasional but often fatal cases of human C. violaceum infection. There is, in addition, a series of previously unknown but important enzymes and secondary metabolites including paraquat-inducible proteins, drug and heavy-metal-resistance proteins, multiple chitinases, and proteins for the detoxification of xenobiotics that may have biotechnological applications.

The internal genetic structure and outcrossing rate of a population of Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze were investigated using 16 allozyme loci. Estimates of the mean number of alleles per loci (1.6), percentage of polymorphic loci (43.8%), and expected genetic diversity (0.170) were similar to those obtained for other gymnosperms. The analysis of spatial autocorrelation demonstrated the presence of internal structure in the first distance classes (up to 70 m), suggesting the presence of family structure. The outcrossing rate was high (0.956), as expected for a dioecious species. However, it was different from unity, indicating outcrossings between related individuals and corroborating the presence of internal genetic structure. The results of this study have implications for the methodologies used in conservation collections and for the use or analysis of this forest species. © The American Genetic Association. 2006. The ant Paratrechina longicornis is a cosmopolitan ant species that has been accidentally spread by commerce around the world, and now is a pest of houses and hospitals. The morphology of its larval stages has been previously described without knowledge of the number of instars. The present study revisits the original description of P. longicornis larvae by adding differences observed among the three larval instars. Compared to other Paratrechina species studied so far, P. longicornis presents smaller larvae, less evident variation in mandible morphology, and clear variation in the morphology of head hairs between the analysed specimens of the second and third instar larvae. Ultrastructural images of the eggs, larval spiracle ornamentation, and pupae are also presented for the first time. Copyright © 2007 - Magnolia Press.

Metabolic studies involving the incorporation of [1-13C]-D- glucose into intact leaves of Piper aduncum (Piperaceae) have indicated that both the mevalonate (MVA) and the pyruvate-triose (MEP) non-mevalonate pathways are implicated in the biosynthesis of isoprene moieties present in methyl 2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-chromene-6-carboxylate (1) and methyl 2,2-dimethyl-8- (3′-methyl-2′-butenyl)-2H-1-chromene-6-carboxylate (2). The pattern of incorporation of label from [1-13C]-D-glucose into these chromenes was determined by quantitative 13C NMR spectroscopy. The results confirmed that biosynthetic compartment of 1 and 2 could either be the plastid and/ or the cytosol or, possibly, an additional compartment such as the plastid inter-membrane space. ©2007 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.
