Copper exhibits high thermal conductivity properties and hence it is extensively used in cryogenic applications like cold fingers, heat exchangers, etc. During the realization of such components, copper undergoes various machining operations from the raw material stage to the final component. During these machining processes, stresses are induced within the metal resulting in internal stresses, strains and dislocations. These effects build up resistance paths for the heat carriers which transfer heat from one location to the other. This in turn, results in reduction of thermal conductivity of the conducting metal and as a result the developed component will not perform as per expectations. In the process of cryogenic treatment, the metal samples are exposed to cryogenic temperature for extended duration of time for 24 hours and later tempered. During this process, the internal stresses and strains are reduced with refinement of the atomic structure. These effects are expected to favourably improve thermal conductivity properties of the metal. In this experimental work, OFHC copper samples were cryotreated for 24 hours at 98 K and part of them were tempered at 423K for one hour. Significant enhancement of thermal conductivity values were observed after cryotreating and tempering the copper samples.

The evolution of microstructure and texture in Hexagonal Close Pack commercially pure titanium has been studied in torsion in a strain rate regime of 0.001 to 1 s(-1). Free end torsion tests carried out on titanium rods indicated higher stress levels at higher strain rate but negligible change in the strain-hardening behaviour. There was a decrease in the intra-granular misorientation while a negligible change in the amount of contraction and extension twins was observed with increase in strain rate. The deformed samples showed a C-1 fibre (c-axis is first rotated 90 degrees in shear direction and then +30 degrees in shear plane direction) at all the strain rates. With the increase in strain rate, there was an increase in the intensity of the C-1 fibre and it became more heterogeneous with a strong {11(2)over-bar6}< 2(8)over-bar)63 > component. In the absence of extensive twinning, pyramidal < c+a > slip system is attributed for the observed deformation texture. The present investigation, therefore, substantiates the theoretical prediction of increase in strength of texture with strain rate in torsion.

Nonextremal solution with warped resolved-deformed conifold background is important to study the infrared limit of large N thermal QCD. Earlier works in this direction have not taken into account all the backreactions on the geometry, namely from the branes, fluxes, and black-hole carefully. In the present work we make some progress in this direction by solving explicitly the supergravity equations of motions in the presence of the backreaction from the black hole. The backreactions from the branes and the fluxes on the other hand and to the order that we study, are comparatively suppressed. Our analysis reveal, among other things, how the resolution parameter would depend on the horizon radius and how the renormalization group flows of the coupling constants should be understood in these scenarios, including their effects on the background three-form fluxes. We also study the effect of switching on a chemical potential in the background and, in a particularly simplified scenario, compute the actual value of the chemical potential for our case.

Single and two-stage Pulse Tube Cryocoolers (PTC) have been designed, fabricated and experimentally studied. The single stage PTC reaches a no-load temperature of similar to 29 K at its cold end, the two-stage PTC reaches similar to 2.9 K in its second stage cold end and similar to 60 K in its first stage cold end. The two-stage Pulse Tube Cryocooler provides a cooling power of similar to 250 mW at 4.2 K. The single stage system uses stainless steel meshes along with Pb granules as its regenerator materials, while the two-stage PTC uses combinations of Pb along with Er3Ni/HoCu2 as the second stage regenerator materials. Normally, the above systems are insulated by thermal radiation shields and mounted inside a vacuum chamber which is maintained at high vacuum. To evaluate the performance of these systems in the possible conditions of loss of vacuum with and without radiation shields, experimental studies have been performed. The heat-in-leak under such severe conditions has been estimated from the heat load characteristics of the respective stages. The experimental results are analyzed to obtain surface emissivities and effective thermal conductivities as a function of interspace pressure.

Tert-butyl 2,2-bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)ethanoate was prepared from the ethanolic solution of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene, tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate and triethylamine. Acetyl group in tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate has cleaved off during the formation of the title molecule. UV-VIS, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Proton-Proton COSY data and single crystal XRD results support the proposed structure. Flammability test, impact sensitivity test and TG/DTA studies at different heating rates on the synthesized molecule imply that it is an insensitive high energy density material.

Deformation and recrystallization textures in nano-crystalline nickel with average grain size of 20 nm were investigated using X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The deformation behaviour of nano-crystalline nickel is quite complicated due to intervention of other deformation mechanisms like grain boundary sliding and restoration mechanisms like grain growth and grain rotation to dislocation mediated slip. Recrystallization studies carried out on the deformed nano-crystalline nickel showed that the deformation texture was retained during low temperature annealing (300 degrees C), while at higher temperature (1000 degrees C), the texture got randomised. The exact mechanism of texture formation during deformation and recrystallization has been discussed.

This contribution reports and analyses the high thermal transport property of hot-pressed TiB2-10 wt.% TiSi2 ceramics. Depending on the test temperature, the thermal conductivity values of the TiB2 composite (which range from 89 to 122W m(-1) K-1) are determined to be 18-25% higher than that of monolithic TiB2. The thermal transport properties are analyzed in terms of electronic and phonon contributions. The electronic contribution is the major component of the thermal conductivity of TiB2 and comparable contributions from both electronic and phonon components are observed for the TiB2-TiSi2 composite. This paper reports for the first time synthesis of free standing nano-crystalline copper crystals of a similar to 30-40 nm by ball milling of copper powder at 150 K under Argon atmosphere in a specially designed cryomill. The detailed characterization of these particles using multiple techniques that includes transmission electron microscopy confirms our conclusion. Careful analysis of the chemistry of these particles indicates that these particles are essentially contamination free. Through the analysis of existing models of grain size refinements during ball milling and low temperature deformation, we argue that the suppression of thermal processes and low temperature leads to formation of free nanoparticles as the process of fracture dominates over possible cold welding at low temperatures. Hot deformation behavior of a hypoeutectic Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy in (alpha + beta) phase field is investigated in the present study with special reference to flow response, kinetics and microstructural evolution. For a comparison, the base alloy Ti-6Al-4V was also studied under identical conditions. Dynamic recovery of alpha phase occurs at low temperatures while softening due to globularization and/or dynamic recrystallization dominates at high temperatures irrespective of boron addition. Microstructural features for both the alloys display bending and kinking of alpha lamellae for near alpha test temperatures. Unlike Ti-6Al-4V, no sign of instability formation was observed in Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B for any deformation condition except for cavitation around TiB particles, due to deformation incompatibility and strain accumulation at the particle-matrix interface. The absence of macroscopic instabilities and early initiation of softening mechanisms as a result of boron addition has been attributed to microstructural features (e.g. refined prior beta grain and alpha colony size, absence of grain boundary alpha layer, presence of TiB particles at prior beta boundaries, etc.) of the respective alloys prior to deformation. A cationic superabsorbent polymer (SAP) was synthesized by carrying out the polymerization of 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride) with N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as the cross-linking agent. The SAP was subjected to degradation in dry and the equilibrium swollen state by thermo gravimetric analysis and exposure to ultraviolet radiation, respectively. The photodegradation was monitored by measuring changes in the swelling capacity and the dry weight of the SAP. The thermal degradation of the SAP occurred in three stages after the initial removal of moisture and the activation energies of the decomposition were determined.

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization at 70 A degrees C in N,N-dimethylformamide was used to prepare poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N,N-dimethylacrylamide) copolymers in various compositions to afford well-defined polymers with pre-determined molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and precise chain end structure. The copolymer compositions were determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The reactivity ratios of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) were calculated as r (NIPAM) = 0.838 and r (DMA) = 1.105, respectively, by the extended Kelen-Tudos method at high conversions. The lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAM can be altered by changing the DMA content in the copolymer chain. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis at different heating rates were carried out on these copolymers to understand the nature of thermal degradation and to determine its kinetics. Different kinetic models were applied to estimate various parameters like the activation energy, the order, and the frequency factor. These studies are important to understand the solid state polymer degradation of N-alkyl substituted polymers, which show great potential in the preparation of miscible polymer blends due to their ability to interact through hydrogen bonding.

In this paper, we address a physics-based closed-form analytical model of flexural phonon-dependent diffusive thermal conductivity (kappa) of suspended rectangular single layer graphene sheet. A quadratic dependence of the out-of-plane phonon frequency, generally called flexural phonons, on the phonon wave vector has been taken into account to analyze the behavior of kappa at lower temperatures. Such a dependence has further been used for the determination of second-order three-phonon Umklapp and isotopic scatterings. We find that these behaviors in our model are best explained through the upper limit of Debye cut-off frequency in the second-order three-phonon Umklapp scattering of the long phonon waves that actually remove the thermal conductivity singularity by contributing a constant scattering rate at low frequencies and note that the out-of-plane Gruneisen parameter for these modes need not be too high. Using this, we clearly demonstrate that. follows a T-1.5 and T-2 law at lower and higher temperatures in the absence of isotopes, respectively. However in their presence, the behavior of kappa sharply deviates from the T-2 law at higher temperatures. The present geometry-dependent model of kappa is found to possess an excellent match with various experimental data over a wide range of temperatures which can be put forward for efficient electro-thermal analyses of encased/supported graphene.

Classical literature on solid mechanics claims existence of radial deformation due to torsion but there is hardly any literature on analytic solutions capturing this phenomenon. This paper tries to solve this problem in an asymptotic sense using the variational asymptotic method (VAM). The method makes no ad hoc assumptions and hence asymptotic correctness is assured. The VAM splits the 3D elasticity problem into two parts: A 1D problem along the length of the cylinder which gives the twist and a 2D cross-sectional problem which gives the radial deformation. This enables closed form solutions, even for some complex problems. Starting with a hollow cylinder, made up of orthotropic but transversely isotropic material, the 3D problem has been formulated and solved analytically despite the presence of geometric nonlinearity. The general results have been specialized for particularly useful cases, such as solid cylinders and/or cylinders with isotropic material. DOI: 10.1115/1.4006803]

We report the synthesis of trigonal and tetragonal phase GeO2 films/microrods from a Ge wafer/powder by thermal oxidation. Both trigonal and tetragonal GeO2 exhibit excitation-dependent luminescence. Trigonal GeO2 exhibits strong green luminescence while tetragonal GeO2 exhibits strong blue luminescence when excited with ultra-violet light. Yellow-red luminescence is observed when both the phases are excited with green light. The emission wavelength varies almost linearly with the excitation wavelength both for trigonal and tetragonal GeO2. The variation is significant in the case of tetragonal GeO2, indicating a potential wavelength converter material.

The first native crystal structure of Phosphoribosylaminoimidazole-succinocarboxamide synthetase (SAICAR synthetase) from a hyperthermophilic organism Pyrococcus horikoshii OT3 was determined in two space groups H3 (Type-1: Resolution 2.35 angstrom) and in C222(1) (Type-2: Resolution 1.9 angstrom). Both are dimeric but Type-1 structure exhibited hexameric arrangement due to the presence of cadmium ions. A comparison has been made on the sequence and structures of all SAICAR synthetases to better understand the differences between mesophilic, thermophilic and hyperthermophilic SAICAR synthetases. These SAICAR synthetases are reasonably similar in sequence and three-dimensional structure; however, differences were visible only in the subtler details of percentage composition of the sequences, salt bridge interactions and non-polar contact areas.
