This study assesses the storage temperature effect on the anthocyanins of pasteurized and unpasteurized açaí pulp. The data was obtained using a pasteurized and lyophilized pulp (PLP) to evaluate the temperature effect (0, 25, and 40 °C). Part of non-pasteurized frozen pulp (NPP) was pasteurized (NPP-P) at 90 °C for 30 seconds; both pulps were stored at 40 °C. The anthocyanin content reduction in the drink was evaluated from the half-life time (t1/2), activation energy (Ea), temperature quotient (Q10), and the reaction rate constant (k). The t1/2 of the PLP anthocyanins stored at 40 °C was 1.8 times less than that stored at 25 °C and 15 times less than that stored at 0 °C; therefore, the higher temperatures decreased the stability of anthocyanins. The pasteurization increased the t1/2 by 6.6 times (10.14 hours for NPP and 67.28 hours for NPP-P). The anthocyanin degradation on NPP-P followed a first order kinetic, while NPP followed a second order kinetic; thus it can be said that the pasteurization process can improve the preservation of anthocyanins in the pulp.

The DNA extraction is a critical step in Genetically Modified Organisms analysis based on real-time PCR. In this study, the CTAB and DNeasy methods provided good quality and quantity of DNA from the texturized soy protein, infant formula, and soy milk samples. Concerning the Certified Reference Material consisting of 5% Roundup Ready® soybean, neither method yielded DNA of good quality. However, the dilution test applied in the CTAB extracts showed no interference of inhibitory substances. The PCR efficiencies of lectin target amplification were not statistically different, and the coefficients of correlation (R²) demonstrated high degree of correlation between the copy numbers and the threshold cycle (Ct) values. ANOVA showed suitable adjustment of the regression and absence of significant linear deviations. The efficiencies of the p35S amplification were not statistically different, and all R² values using DNeasy extracts were above 0.98 with no significant linear deviations. Two out of three R² values using CTAB extracts were lower than 0.98, corresponding to lower degree of correlation, and the lack-of-fit test showed significant linear deviation in one run. The comparative analysis of the Ct values for the p35S and lectin targets demonstrated no statistical significant differences between the analytical curves of each target.

Sugarcane spirit is a drink considered as a national symbol of Brazil. It is produced by large producers and by about 30 thousand small and medium home-distilling producers dispersed throughout the country. The copper originating from the home-distillers can become a serious problem since at high concentrations in beverages it may cause serious human health problems. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the activated carbon used in commercial filters on the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of aged sugarcane spirit. Analyses of copper, dry extract, alcoholic degree, higher alcohols, volatile acids, aldehydes, esters, furfural, and methanol were performed. The sensory evaluation was performed by seven selected trained judges, who analyzed the yellow color, woody aroma and flavor, and intensity of alcoholic aroma and flavor of the cane spirit before and after the filtration process. The sensory tests were carried out using a 9 cm non-structured intensity scale. A reduction was observed in all compounds analyzed physicochemically, except for the esters, which increased after filtration. This increase is probably due to the esterification of the alcohols and acids present. According to the sensory results obtained, a reduction was observed in the intensity of the yellow color, aroma, and wood flavor characteristics, the major characteristics of the aging process.

The goal of this study was to develop a symbiotic lacteous drink, evaluate its physicochemical and sensory characteristics, and verify the viability of Lactobacillus acidophilus in the drink. The milk serum-based drink consisted of 50% milk serum containing 10% saccharose, 25% powdered milk, 15% yacon pulp, and cultures of Lactobacillus acidophilus-La 5E and Bifidobacterium bifidum BB12. It was stored for up to 21 days under refrigeration. The milk serum-based drink was analyzed for protein, ether extract, total dietary fiber, total frutans, carbohydrate content, color, pH, acidity, and contamination by coliforms, and Salmonella sp. Coliforms and Salmonella sp were not detected, and L. acidophilus and B. bifidum provided satisfactory probiotic counts up to 21 days of storage under refrigeration. Lactobacillus acidophilus resistance to gastric acids and bile salts was detected only up to seven days of storage when evaluated in vitro. Sensory analysis and purchase viability were evaluated by consumers at 0, 7, 14, and 21 days of storage. Based on the analytical results and consumer evaluation, the drink was acceptable up to seven days of storage.

Report sent to the President and Director of the Port Dalhousie and Thorold Railway stating that the location of the line extension of the railway is completed. The distance from Thorold Station to Port Colborne is 20 miles. The estimate provides for construction of a permanent structure across the Chippewa and Welland River. Estimates for building a first class road, culverts and bridges will be of permanent and durable masonry. This includes estimates for various station buildings such as a warehouse in Port Colborne and a warehouse in Port Dalhousie. Surveys and plans are ready and will be registered this week. Il existe une nouvelle catégorie de technologie, les vaccins dérivés de plantes («VDPs»), qui englobe des produits qui ont un grand potentiel pour l’amélioration de la santé à l’échelle globale. Bien qu’ils ne soient pas encore disponibles pour le public, le développement des VDPs a progressé de façon telle qu’ils devraient être prêts à être mis en marché et distribués sous peu. Ainsi, c’est le moment idéal pour lancer un débat sur la meilleure façon de protéger cette nouvelle catégorie de technologie. Vu leur nature, les VDPs ne se qualifient pas parfaitement pour aucune forme de protection de propriété intellectuelle. En effet, un VDP est à la fois une variété de plante, une biotechnologie, un médicament et un produit qui vise spécifiquement les besoins de pays en voie de développement. Chacune de ces caractéristiques soulève ses propres problématiques en ce qui a trait à la propriété intellectuelle. C’est pourquoi il appert difficile d’identifier la forme de protection la plus adéquate et appropriée pour les VDPs. Cet article traite de la nature d’un VDP, des différentes catégories dans lesquelles il pourrait être classé, des différents types de systèmes de protection de propriété intellectuelle auxquels il pourrait être éligible ainsi que des problèmes qui pourraient être soulevés par tous ces éléments. Ces discussions visent à mettre l’accent sur le fait que nous avons affaire à une toute nouvelle catégorie d’innovation technologique. L’auteure est donc d’avis qu’une approche proactive est nécessaire pour discuter d’un système de protection de propriété intellectuelle en relation avec les VDPs. En ce moment, c’est l’inventeur qui choisi comment il protègera son invention. Les moyens employés par ce dernier pourraient être subséquemment modifiés ou annulés par une décision judiciaire mais comme plusieurs autres inventeurs d’une même catégorie de technologie auront probablement déjà adopté une stratégie de protection similaire, ce type de mesures judiciaire, très tard dans le processus, pourra avoir des résultats néfastes sur les détenteurs de droits. Le développement de lignes directrices d’entrée de jeu, avec l’aide d’un panel d’experts de préférence, peut contribuer à éviter les situations de confusion qui ont déjà été vécues avec l’application d’autres nouvelles technologies et qui devraient servir de leçon pour l’encadrement des VDPs.

Introduction: En réponse aux exigences du gouvernement fédéral en ce qui concerne les temps d'attente pour les chirurgies électives d’hanche et du genou, les Organismes Canadiens de santé ont adopté des stratégies de gestion pour les listes d'attente. Cependant, il n'existe pas actuellement aucune information disponible concernant les effets imprévus, positive ou négative, de ces stratégies. Méthodologie: Un modèle qui a été construit est tombé en panne la gestion de la chirurgie d’hanche et du genou en différentes étapes, afin d'identifier les effets imprévus possibles pour chaque étape; le modèle a été validé auprès d'un panel d'experts. Cette étude a choisi quatre études de cas en fonction de leur durabilité: un cas qui a été durable, un cas qui a été modérément durable, et deux cas peu probable d'être durable. Dans cette étude qualitative, nous avons mené 31 entretiens semi-structurés entre Novembre 2010 et Juin 2011 avec les gestionnaires, les infirmières, les thérapeutes et les chirurgiens impliqués dans la gestion des stratégies du temps d’attente pour les chirurgies électives d’hanche et du genou. Les quatre cas ont été sélectionnés à partir de trois provinces / régions. Nous avons analysé les conséquences non intentionnelles aux niveaux systémique et organisationnelle en utilisant les stratégies dans chaque contexte. Enregistrements des entrevues ont été transcrits mot à mot et soumis à l'analyse du cadre. Résultats: Les effets négatifs sont la précarité des stratégies en raison du non-récurrente financement, l'anxiété chez les patients qui ne sont pas prêts pour la chirurgie, une redistribution du temps de chirurgie vers l’orthopédie au détriment des autres interventions chirurgicales, tensions entre les chirurgiens et entre les orthopédistes et anesthésistes, et la pression sur le personnel dans le bloc opératoire et postopératoire. Conclusion: La stratégie d’implémentation aux niveaux national et local devrait prendre en compte les conséquences potentielles, positives et négatives. Il y a des conséquences inattendues à chaque niveau de l'organisation des soins de santé. Individuellement et collectivement, ces conséquences peuvent positivement et négativement affecter les résultats. Par conséquent, la planification de la santé doit analyser et prendre en compte les conséquences inattendues en termes de bonnes résultats inattendues, compromis et les conséquences négatives afin d'améliorer les résultats.

There is a recent interest to use inorganic-based magnetic nanoparticles as a vehicle to carry biomolecules for various biophysical applications, but direct attachment of the molecules is known to alter their conformation leading to attenuation in activity. In addition, surface immobilization has been limited to monolayer coverage. It is shown that alternate depositions of negatively charged protein molecules, typically bovine serum albumin (BSA) with a positively charged aminocarbohydrate template such as glycol chitosan (GC) on magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle surface as a colloid, are carried out under pH 7.4. Circular dichroism (CD) clearly reveals that the secondary structure of the entrapped BSA sequential depositions in this manner remains totally unaltered which is in sharp contrast to previous attempts. Probing the binding properties of the entrapped BSA using small molecules (Site I and Site II drug compounds) confirms for the first time the full retention of its biological activity as compared with native BSA, which also implies the ready accessibility of the entrapped protein molecules through the porous overlayers. This work clearly suggests a new method to immobilize and store protein molecules beyond monolayer adsorption on a magnetic nanoparticle surface without much structural alteration. This may find applications in magnetic recoverable enzymes or protein delivery.

The successful implementation of just-in-time (JIT) purchasing policy in many industries has prompted many companies that still use the economic order quantity (EOQ) purchasing policy to ponder if they should switch to the JIT purchasing policy. Despite existing studies that directly compare the costs between the EOQ and JIT purchasing systems, this decision is, however, still difficult to be made, especially when price discount has to be considered. JIT purchasing may not always be successful even though plants that adopted JIT operations have experienced or can take advantage of physical space reduction. Hence, the objective of this study is to expand on a classical EOQ with a price discount model to derive the EOQ–JIT cost indifference point. The objective was tested and achieved through a survey and case study conducted in the ready-mixed concrete industry in Singapore.

A model for comparing the inventory costs of purchasing under the economic order quantity (EOQ) system and the just-in-time (JIT) order purchasing system in existing literature concluded that JIT purchasing was virtually always the preferable inventory ordering system especially at high level of annual demand. By expanding the classical EOQ model, this paper shows that it is possible for the EOQ system to be more cost effective than the JIT system once the inventory demand approaches the EOQ-JIT cost indifference point. The case study conducted in the ready-mixed concrete industry in Singapore supported this proposition.

Objective: To evaluate the bifidogenic efficacy of two inulin doses in healthy human adults. Design: A double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover human study. Setting: Food Microbial Sciences Unit, The University of Reading, Reading, UK. Subjects: Thirty healthy volunteers, 15 men, 15 women ( age range 19-35). Interventions: Subjects consumed a chocolate drink containing placebo ( maltodextrin, 8 g/day), 5 g/day inulin and 8 g/day inulin for a 2-week treatment period. Each treatment was followed by a 1-week washout at the end of which volunteers progressed to the next treatment. Faecal samples were obtained at the start of the study ( baseline) and at the end of each treatment and washout period. Fluorescent in situ hybridization was used to monitor populations of Bifidobacterium genus, Bacteroides - Prevotella, Lactobacillus - Enterococcus and Clostridium perfringens - histolyticum subgroup. Results: Bifidobacterial levels increased significantly upon ingestion of both the low ( 9.78 +/- 0.29 log(10) cells/g faeces, P < 0.05) and the high inulin dose ( 9.79 +/- 0.38 log(10) cells/g faeces, P < 0.05) compared to placebo ( 9.64 +/- 0.23 log(10) cells/g faeces). Conclusions: Both inulin doses exhibited a bifidogenic effect but a higher volunteer percentage responded to the high dose. A dose response effect was not observed but the magnitude of increase in bifidobacteria levels depended on their initial numbers. The higher the initial concentrations the smaller was the increase upon ingestion of the active treatments.
