The planar rocking of a prismatic rectangular rigid block about either of its corners is considered. The problem of homoclinic intersections of the stable and unstable manifolds of the perturbed separatrix is addressed to and the corresponding Melnikov functions are derived. Inclusion of the vertical forcing in the Hamiltonian permits the construction of a three-dimensional separatrix. The corresponding modified Melnikov function of Wiggins for homoclinic intersections is derived. Further, the 1-period symmetric orbits are predicted analytically using the method of averaging and compared with the simulation results. The stability boundary for such orbits is also established.

This paper reports new results concerning the capabilities of a family of service disciplines aimed at providing per-connection end-to-end delay (and throughput) guarantees in high-speed networks. This family consists of the class of rate-controlled service disciplines, in which traffic from a connection is reshaped to conform to specific traffic characteristics, at every hop on its path. When used together with a scheduling policy at each node, this reshaping enables the network to provide end-to-end delay guarantees to individual connections. The main advantages of this family of service disciplines are their implementation simplicity and flexibility. On the other hand, because the delay guarantees provided are based on summing worst case delays at each node, it has also been argued that the resulting bounds are very conservative which may more than offset the benefits. In particular, other service disciplines such as those based on Fair Queueing or Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS), have been shown to provide much tighter delay bounds. As a result, these disciplines, although more complex from an implementation point-of-view, have been considered for the purpose of providing end-to-end guarantees in high-speed networks. In this paper, we show that through ''proper'' selection of the reshaping to which we subject the traffic of a connection, the penalty incurred by computing end-to-end delay bounds based on worst cases at each node can be alleviated. Specifically, we show how rate-controlled service disciplines can be designed to outperform the Rate Proportional Processor Sharing (RPPS) service discipline. Based on these findings, we believe that rate-controlled service disciplines provide a very powerful and practical solution to the problem of providing end-to-end guarantees in high-speed networks.

Utilising Jones' method associated with the Wiener-Hopf technique, explicit solutions are obtained for the temperature distributions on the surface of a cylindrical rod without an insulated core as well as that inside a cylindrical rod with an insulated inner core when the rod, in either of the two cases, is allowed to enter, with a uniform speed, into two different layers of fluid with different cooling abilities. Simple expressions are derived for the values of the sputtering temperatures of the rod at the points of entry into the respective layers, assuming the upper layer of the fluid to be of finite depth and the lower of infinite extent. Both the problems are solved through a three-part Wiener-Hopf problem of special type and the numerical results under certain special circumstances are obtained and presented in tabular forms.

Atomic vibration in the Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) gives rise to non-local interactions. In this paper, an expression for the non-local scaling parameter is derived as a function of the geometric and electronic properties of the rolled graphene sheet in single-walled CNTs. A self-consistent method is developed for the linearization of the problem of ultrasonic wave propagation in CNTs. We show that (i) the general three-dimensional elastic problem leads to a single non-local scaling parameter (e(0)), (ii) e(0) is almost constant irrespective of chirality of CNT in the case of longitudinal wave propagation, (iii) e(0) is a linear function of diameter of CNT for the case of torsional mode of wave propagation, (iv) e(0) in the case of coupled longitudinal-torsional modes of wave propagation, is a function which exponentially converges to that of axial mode at large diameters and to torsional mode at smaller diameters. These results are valid in the long-wavelength limit. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nonlinear finite element analysis is used for the estimation of damage due to low-velocity impact loading of laminated composite circular plates. The impact loading is treated as an equivalent static loading by assuming the impactor to be spherical and the contact to obey Hertzian law. The stresses in the laminate are calculated using a 48 d.o.f. laminated composite sector element. Subsequently, the Tsai-Wu criterion is used to detect the zones of failure and the maximum stress criterion is used to identify the mode of failure. Then the material properties of the laminate are degraded in the failed regions. The stress analysis is performed again using the degraded properties of the plies. The iterative process is repeated until no more failure is detected in the laminate. The problem of a typical T300/N5208 composite [45 degrees/0 degrees/-45 degrees/90 degrees](s) circular plate being impacted by a spherical impactor is solved and the results are compared with experimental and analytical results available in the literature. The method proposed and the computer code developed can handle symmetric, as well as unsymmetric, laminates. It can be easily extended to cover the impact of composite rectangular plates, shell panels and shells.

We show that the problem of two anyons interacting through a simple harmonic potential or a Coulomb potential is supersymmetric. The supersymmetry operators map a theory described by statistics parameter θ to one described by π+θ. Thus fermions and bosons go into each other, while semions are supersymmetric by themselves. The simple harmonic problem has a Sp(4) symmetry for any value of θ which explains the energy degeneracies.

We provide a comparative performance evaluation of packet queuing and link admission strategies for low-speed wide area network Links (e.g. 9600 bps, 64 kbps) that interconnect relatively highspeed, connectionless local area networks (e.g. 10 Mbps). In particular, we are concerned with the problem of providing differential quality of service to interLAN remote terminal and file transfer sessions, and throughput fairness between interLAN file transfer sessions. We use analytical and simulation models to study a variety of strategies. Our work also serves to address the performance comparison of connectionless vs. connection-oriented interconnection of CLNS LANS. When provision of priority at the physical transmission level is not feasible, we show, for low-speed WAN links (e.g. 9600 bps), the superiority of connection-oriented interconnection of connectionless LANs, with segregation of traffic streams with different QoS requirements into different window flow controlled connections. Such an implementation can easily be obtained by transporting IP packets over an X.25 WAN. For 64 kbps WAN links, there is a drop in file transfer throughputs, owing to connection overheads, but the other advantages are retained, The same solution also helps to provide throughput fairness between interLAN file transfer sessions. We also provide a corroboration of some of our modelling results with results from an experimental test-bed.

In this paper, the classical problem of homogenization of elliptic operators in arbitrary domains with periodically oscillating coefficients is considered. Using Bloch wave decomposition, a new proof of convergence is furnished. It sheds new light and offers an alternate way to view the classical results. In a natural way, this method leads us to work in the Fourier space and thus in a framework dual to the one used by L. Tartar [Problemes d'Homogeneisation dans les Equations aux: Derivees Partielles, Cours Peccot au College de Prance, 1977] in his method of homogenization. Further, this technique offers a nontraditional way of calculating the homogenized coefficients which is easy to implement in the computer.

The problem of sensor-network-based distributed intrusion detection in the presence of clutter is considered. It is argued that sensing is best regarded as a local phenomenon in that only sensors in the immediate vicinity of an intruder are triggered. In such a setting, lack of knowledge of intruder location gives rise to correlated sensor readings. A signal-space view-point is introduced in which the noise-free sensor readings associated to intruder and clutter appear as surfaces f(s) and f(g) and the problem reduces to one of determining in distributed fashion, whether the current noisy sensor reading is best classified as intruder or clutter. Two approaches to distributed detection are pursued. In the first, a decision surface separating f(s) and f(g) is identified using Neyman-Pearson criteria. Thereafter, the individual sensor nodes interactively exchange bits to determine whether the sensor readings are on one side or the other of the decision surface. Bounds on the number of bits needed to be exchanged are derived, based on communication-complexity (CC) theory. A lower bound derived for the two-party average case CC of general functions is compared against the performance of a greedy algorithm. Extensions to the multi-party case is straightforward and is briefly discussed. The average case CC of the relevant greaterthan (CT) function is characterized within two bits. Under the second approach, each sensor node broadcasts a single bit arising from appropriate two-level quantization of its own sensor reading, keeping in mind the fusion rule to be subsequently applied at a local fusion center. The optimality of a threshold test as a quantization rule is proved under simplifying assumptions. Finally, results from a QualNet simulation of the algorithms are presented that include intruder tracking using a naive polynomial-regression algorithm. 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Integrity enhancement of damaged or design deficient structures through repairs is attracting considerable engineering attention. Bonded composite patch repairs to cracked metallic sheets offer various advantages over riveted doubler type, particularly for airframe applications. This paper first reviews the R&D activity in the area of structural repairs. It then approaches the problem of a composite patch repair to a cracked aluminium sheet with different finite element modelling strategies and compares their outcome. The efficient finite element modelling approach thus established is used to study the effect of patch material, patch size, patch symmetry and adhesive thickness on repair performance as the crack grows in the repair configuration. We address the optimal control problem of a very general stochastic hybrid system with both autonomous and impulsive jumps. The planning horizon is infinite and we use the discounted-cost criterion for performance evaluation. Under certain assumptions, we show the existence of an optimal control. We then derive the quasivariational inequalities satisfied by the value function and establish well-posedness. Finally, we prove the usual verification theorem of dynamic programming.

In the absence of a reliable method for a priori prediction of structure and properties of inorganic solid materials, an experimental approach involving a systematic study of composition, structure and properties combined with chemical intuition based on previous experience is likely to be a viable alternative to the problem of rational design of inorganic materials. The approach is illustrated by taking perovskite lithium-ion conductors as an example.

This paper presents a novel hypothesis on the function of massive feedback pathways in mammalian visual systems. We propose that the cortical feature detectors compete not for the right to represent the output at a point, but for exclusive rights to abstract and represent part of the underlying input. Feedback can do this very naturally. A computational model that implements the above idea for the problem of line detection is presented and based on that we suggest a functional role for the thalamo-cortical loop during perception of lines. We show that the model successfully tackles the so called Cross problem. Based on some recent experimental results, we discuss the biological plausibility of our model. We also comment on the relevance of our hypothesis (on the role of feedback) to general sensory information processing and recognition. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Gene manipulation in Mycobacterium tuberculosis has been slow in coming of age owing to the inherent difficulties associated with working on this aerosol-transmitted pathogen, in addition to the paucity of molecular tools such as plasmids and transposons. One of the early approaches to overcome these difficulties was the development of phasmids, which combined the properties of phages and plasmids and allowed introduction of recombinant genes into mycobacteria. The lone plasmid pAL5000 of mycobacteria has been exploited to its fullest potential in the construction of a plethora of vectors. Above all, the single most important achievement has been the development of elegant and innovative approaches to overcome the problem of illegitimate recombination which threatened the success of allelic-exchange mutagenesis in the slow-growing pathogenic mycobacterial species. In this review I discuss the current status of conditionally replicating plasmid and transposon vectors and their application in generating targeted mutations in mycobacteria.

The problem of estimating multiple Carrier Frequency Offsets (CFOs) in the uplink of MIMO-OFDM systems with Co-Channel (CC) and OFDMA based carrier allocation is considered. The tri-linear data model for generalized, multiuser OFDM system is formulated. Novel blind subspace based estimation of multiple CFOs in the case of arbitrary carrier allocation scheme in OFDMA systems and CC users in OFDM systems based on the Khatri-Rao product is proposed. The method works where the conventional subspace method fails. The performance of the proposed methods is compared with pilot based Least-Squares method.
