This is an article about a decisive moment in the formation of Western modern literature. We are talking about Lessing’s criticism of the excessive influence of neoclassical French theatre on German theatrical production. Lessing considered that the aristocratic model imported from France did not correspond to German society’s context at all – society which had already been marked by an incipient bourgeois mode of life. So the German critic dedicated his theoretical efforts to affirm the necessity and to raise possibilities about a literary production which had more consonance with what he considered to be the German Zeitgeist. It is in Shakespeare’s work that Lessing found his answer, and this fact will unleash the appearing of the Sturm und Drang movement and will consequently give birth to an incipient bourgeois literature. So we analyze here the way this Shakespearian influence happens and its relevance in the formation of a bourgeois literature.

During the time he collaborated with the cartoon magazine Semana Ilustrada [Illustrated Week] (1860-1876), Machado de Assis, under the pen name of Dr. Semana, was the author of a number of chronicles in which a different kind of criticism, called “reverse criticism” by Raimundo Magalhães Júnior, emerged. This criticism consisted in flattering texts that were terrible from the literary viewpoint. Based on the theoretical formulations of Beth Brait and Linda Hutcheon regarding irony, the article aims to analyze some examples of this kind of criticism that arises in Semana Ilustrada, in which it is possible to identify the first signs of Machado’s unreliable narrator.

Starting from the set wherein Vidas Secas (1938) stands out, it is possible to establish parameters that make of Graciliano Ramos’ oeuvre the overcoming of realism due to the scope of representation and the quality of formal handling developed by the author, imbibed in the Brazilian and universal literary tradition, and whose result the criticism of Antonio Candido, skilful in taking into account the former critique, points out with precision. Perusing the facts that mark the creation and reception of Vidas Secas (including the production of the movie by Nelson Pereira dos Santos in 1963), the present work is a preamble for analyses that take into account the coherence of Graciliano Ramos with the absorption of expressive resources used by American and European practitioners of a literature engaged in adjusting the expression of contrasts and in reformulating the so-called regionalism

Therefore, we find the analytical process João Ribeiro, their theoretical observations, concepts and dilemmas which are appointed by him in literary history and criticism of the early twentieth century.

Within the scope of Literary Studies, theory, criticism, and historiography about the literature produced in the Middle Ages developed considerably from 1940 on, with the works of Ernst Curtius, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Erich Auerbach. In spite of the progress made, some specific aspects remain in the shadow, with incursions which were punctual though meaningful: that is the case of the critic fortunes about women‟s literary production in that period. Rosvita was a canoness and lived in the Benedictine convent of Gandersheim (Germany), in the 10th century A.D. Coming under Terence‟s influence, she wrote theater plays in Latin in which she figuratively presented theological issues in order to spread the Christian doctrine. The martyrdom issue deserved to be put in relief and was the focal point of the play Wisdom, which took place at the time of the Roman emperor Adrian. This paper analyzes that dramatic text discussing, at the end, how the categories of symbol, enigma, allegory, and mystery are organized by the author as expressive resources and structural elements.
