The analysis of the interdependence between time series has become an important field of research in the last years, mainly as a result of advances in the characterization of dynamical systems from the signals they produce, the introduction of concepts such as generalized and phase synchronization and the application of information theory to time series analysis. In neurophysiology, different analytical tools stemming from these concepts have added to the ‘traditional’ set of linear methods, which includes the cross-correlation and the coherency function in the time and frequency domain, respectively, or more elaborated tools such as Granger Causality. This increase in the number of approaches to tackle the existence of functional (FC) or effective connectivity (EC) between two (or among many) neural networks, along with the mathematical complexity of the corresponding time series analysis tools, makes it desirable to arrange them into a unified-easy-to-use software package. The goal is to allow neuroscientists, neurophysiologists and researchers from related fields to easily access and make use of these analysis methods from a single integrated toolbox. Here we present HERMES (http://hermes.ctb.upm.es), a toolbox for the Matlab® environment (The Mathworks, Inc), which is designed to study functional and effective brain connectivity from neurophysiological data such as multivariate EEG and/or MEG records. It includes also visualization tools and statistical methods to address the problem of multiple comparisons. We believe that this toolbox will be very helpful to all the researchers working in the emerging field of brain connectivity analysis.

A new method to analyze the influence of possible hysteresis cycles in devices employed for optical computing architectures is reported. A simple full adder structure is taken as the basis for this method. Single units, called optical programmable logic cells, previously reported by the authors, compose this structure. These cells employ, as basic devices, on-off and SEED-like components. Their hysteresis cycles have been modeled by numerical analysis. The influence of the different characteristic cycles is studied with respect to the obtained possible errors at the output. Two different approaches have been adopted. The first one shows the change in the arithmetic result output with respect to the different values and positions of the hysteresis cycle. The second one offers a similar result, but in a polar diagram where the total behavior of the system is better analyzed.

A new methodology to study irregular behaviours in logic cells is reported. It is based on two types of diagrams, namely phase and working diagrams. Sets of four bits are grouped and represented by their hexadecimal equivalent. Some hexadecimal numbers correspond to certain logic functions. The influence of the internal and external tolerances, namely those appearing in the employed devices and in the working signals, may be analysed with this method. Its importance in the case of logic structures with chaotic behaviours is studied.

A new method to obtain digital chaos synchronization between two systems is reported. It is based on the use of Optically Programmable Logic Cells as chaos generators. When these cells are feedbacked, periodic and chaotic behaviours are obtained. They depend on the ratio between internal and external delay times. Chaos synchronization is obtained if a common driving signal feeds both systems. A control to impose the same boundary conditions to both systems is added to the emitter. New techniques to analyse digital chaos are presented. The main application of these structures is to obtain secure communications in optical networks.

Based on a previously reported logic cell structure (see SPIE, vol. 2038, p. 67-77, 1993), the two types of cells present at the inner and ganglion cell layers of the vertebrate retina and their intracellular response, as well as their connections with each other, have been simulated. These cells are amacrines and ganglion cells. The main scheme of the authors' configuration is shown in a figure. These two types of cells, as well as some of their possible interconnections, have been implemented with the authors' previously reported optical-processing element. As it has been shown, the authors' logic structure is able to process two optical input binary signals, being the output two logical functions. Moreover, if a delayed feedback from one of the two possible outputs to one or both of the inputs is introduced, a very different behaviour is obtained. Depending on the value of the time delay, an oscillatory output can be obtained from a constant optical input signal. Period and length pulses are dependent on delay values, both external and internal, as well as on other control signals. Moreover, a chaotic behaviour can be obtained too under certain conditions

SUMMARY. The rise and evolution of mobile communication systems and advanced wireless networks in early XXI century have allowed to taking advantage of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). These networks are composed of independent wireless devices that incorporate sensors for collecting data of different nature. The WSN is characterized by its scalability, no wiring, small size, low power consumption, wide range of physical magnitudes measurable, among others. These qualities make them very interesting for application in many scenarios to the Information Society, such as, domotic, agriculture, smart environment, ehealth, industrial control, logistics, security and smart cities, among others. This work proposes to use WSN in the emergency scenario where is very important the usability, reliability, availability, and robustness of the systems to be used in hostile conditions, especially in fire-fighters environment. That is why WSN works in emergency will be studied to tackle what applications compliance with the above requirements. The first WSN developed will be environmental monitoring of three CPDs IT department Emergency. This scenario is a non-mobile environment, more controlled and bring gaining experience in the use of WSN to face mobile environment which is more complex. Then, for the mobile environment is developed an experimental prototype of WSN for tracking fire vehicles living fire stations with their equipment. Another prototype is foreseen to be implemented to assist fire-fighters location and / or people in a disaster. These WSN are developed and implemented for Madrid City Emergency, whose involvement was critical to put this research into stage.

A method to study some neuronal functions, based on the use of the Feynman diagrams, employed in many-body theory, is reported. An equation obtained from the neuron cable theory is the basis for the method. The Green's function for this equation is obtained under some simple boundary conditions. An excitatory signal, with different conditions concerning high and pulse duration, is employed as input signal. Different responses have been obtained

Untapered multifiber unions are reported to show a spectral behavior similar to the tapered ones. Their oscillatory behavior does not depend on the biconical regions. This suggests a novel way to make low-cost all-fiber devices with applications as passive components such as optical filters and wavelength multiplexers/demultiplexers. Two types of multimode fibers have been studied and information about the index profile influence has been obtained. Polarization insensitivity and temperature stability have been observed.

Digital chaotic behavior in an optically processing element is reported. It is obtained as the result of processing two fixed trains of bits. The process is performed with an optically programmable logic gate, previously reported as a possible main block for optical computing. Outputs for some specific conditions of the circuit are given. Digital chaos is obtained using a feedback configuration. Period doublings in a Feigenbaum‐like scenario are obtained. A new method to characterize this type of digital chaos is reported.
