Important physical and biological processes in soil-plant-microbial systems are dominated by the geometry of soil pore space, and a correct model of this geometry is critical for understanding them. We analyze the geometry of soil pore space with the X-ray computed tomography (CT) of intact soil columns. We present here some preliminary results of our investigation on Minkowski functionals of parallel sets to characterize soil structure. We also show how the evolution of Minkowski morphological measurements of parallel sets may help to characterize the influence of conventional tillage and permanent cover crop of resident vegetation on soil structure in a Spanish Mediterranean vineyard.

With the growing body of research on traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury, computational neuroscience has recently focused its modeling efforts on neuronal functional deficits following mechanical loading. However, in most of these efforts, cell damage is generally only characterized by purely mechanistic criteria, function of quantities such as stress, strain or their corresponding rates. The modeling of functional deficits in neurites as a consequence of macroscopic mechanical insults has been rarely explored. In particular, a quantitative mechanically based model of electrophysiological impairment in neuronal cells has only very recently been proposed (Jerusalem et al., 2013). In this paper, we present the implementation details of Neurite: the finite difference parallel program used in this reference. Following the application of a macroscopic strain at a given strain rate produced by a mechanical insult, Neurite is able to simulate the resulting neuronal electrical signal propagation, and thus the corresponding functional deficits. The simulation of the coupled mechanical and electrophysiological behaviors requires computational expensive calculations that increase in complexity as the network of the simulated cells grows. The solvers implemented in Neurite-explicit and implicit-were therefore parallelized using graphics processing units in order to reduce the burden of the simulation costs of large scale scenarios. Cable Theory and Hodgkin-Huxley models were implemented to account for the electrophysiological passive and active regions of a neurite, respectively, whereas a coupled mechanical model accounting for the neurite mechanical behavior within its surrounding medium was adopted as a link between lectrophysiology and mechanics (Jerusalem et al., 2013). This paper provides the details of the parallel implementation of Neurite, along with three different application examples: a long myelinated axon, a segmented dendritic tree, and a damaged axon. The capabilities of the program to deal with large scale scenarios, segmented neuronal structures, and functional deficits under mechanical loading are specifically highlighted.

During the last few decades, new imaging techniques like X-ray computed tomography have made available rich and detailed information of the spatial arrangement of soil constituents, usually referred to as soil structure. Mathematical morphology provides a plethora of mathematical techniques to analyze and parameterize the geometry of soil structure. They provide a guide to design the process from image analysis to the generation of synthetic models of soil structure in order to investigate key features of flow and transport phenomena in soil. In this work, we explore the ability of morphological functions built over Minkowski functionals with parallel sets of the pore space to characterize and quantify pore space geometry of columns of intact soil. These morphological functions seem to discriminate the effects on soil pore space geometry of contrasting management practices in a Mediterranean vineyard, and they provide the first step toward identifying the statistical significance of the observed differences.

Using multiphase technique is interesting in PV AC-module application due to light-load efficiency improvement by applying phase shedding, and the possibility of low-profile implementation. This paper presents a comparison, in terms of size and efficiency, of the parallel interleaved and the parallel-series connected multiphase configurations, as a function of the number of phases, for a forward micro-inverter operated in DCM. 8-phase prototypes of both multiphase configurations are built and compared between them and with the single phase forward micro-inverter, validating the presented analysis.

The current approach to developing mixed-criticality sys- tems is by partitioning the hardware resources (processors, memory and I/O devices) among the different applications. Partitions are isolated from each other both in the temporal and the spatial domain, so that low-criticality applications cannot compromise other applications with a higher level of criticality in case of misbehaviour. New architectures based on many-core processors open the way to highly parallel systems in which each partition can be allocated to a set of dedicated proces- sor cores, thus simplifying partition scheduling and temporal separation. Moreover, spatial isolation can also benefit from many-core architectures, by using simpler hardware mechanisms to protect the address spaces of different applications. This paper describes an architecture for many- core embedded partitioned systems, together with some implementation advice for spatial isolation.

ABSTRACT An 'invisible city' or technological 'black box' runs parallel to the day-to-day surface of modern cities, remaining silent, unnoticed, at the service of the citizenry. Paradoxically, this invisible space is where some of the most relevant decisions concerning the city are made: the 'black box' is where cities agree on their relationships with nature; it is used to manage and distribute the resources that form its urban metabolism. In short, the 'black box' is the collection of architectures where nature is urbanised, where it becomes a city. And in spite of all this, it has mostly remained invisible. Nevertheless, this urban 'black box' was opened during the last third of the 20th century, so what used to be invisible is invisible no more, or at least the laws governing its visibility have been altered. The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to evaluate the architectural, urban planning and ecological repercussions of this recent urban phenomenon that has been taking place for several decades in many of the cities that followed in the footsteps of the large European metropolises of the 19th century, under the symbolic paradigm of a modern 'prometheic' and emancipating project. This analysis shall be done by juxtaposing two basic urban parameters that in general have been studied separately: frstly the ‘urban political ecology', that is, the network of socio-ecological relationships within the city. Secondly, the 'economy of visibility', that is, the way the visible and invisible spheres are structured in relation with the governance frameworks. The intersection between the 'urban political ecology' and the 'economy of visibility' provides an effective analysis framework to understand the phenomenon of the 'opening of the black box'. It entails calling into question some of the predominant notions in classical urban and architectural theory, such as the segregation of nature, infrastructures and society, or the traditional forms of ecological usage of the environment. It also offers an exceptional analysis criterion to understand the discrediting process (from a philosophical, architectural, economic perspective, but also from the point of view of ecology, society, gender or queerness) of modern all-encompassing urban models that draw from the anthropocentric frameworks of the 19th century. Finally, it provides some architectural tools to tackle 21st-century ecosystemic challenges. The study of relevant authors that have analysed these problems for architecture, as well as the study of milestone architectural cases for the urban consolidation of processes associated to the 'black box', shall serve to reach the conclusion that, in ecological terms, modern cities have mobilised an 'urban political ecology' based on formulas of subjugation of the environment, through invisible architectural and technological operations. This thesis shall present an evaluation of whether the phenomenon of the 'opening of the black box' can be considered a symptom of the alteration of the 'urban political ecology'. We shall 'open the black box' to study the integration of the various urbanscale technological devices within the urban landscape, now that they have ceased to be invisible. We shall see how they participate, like any other actor, in the confguration of other cohabitation frameworks within today's cities.

Traditional Text-To-Speech (TTS) systems have been developed using especially-designed non-expressive scripted recordings. In order to develop a new generation of expressive TTS systems in the Simple4All project, real recordings from the media should be used for training new voices with a whole new range of speaking styles. However, for processing this more spontaneous material, the new systems must be able to deal with imperfect data (multi-speaker recordings, background and foreground music and noise), filtering out low-quality audio segments and creating mono-speaker clusters. In this paper we compare several architectures for combining speaker diarization and music and noise detection which improve the precision and overall quality of the segmentation.

This paper describes the dielectrophoretic potential created by the evanescent electric field acting on a particle near a photovoltaic crystal surface depending on the crystal cut. This electric field is obtained from the steady state solution of the Kukhtarev equations for the photovoltaic effect, where the diffusion term has been disregarded. First, the space charge field generated by a small, square, light spot where d _ l (being d a side of the square and l the crystal thickness) is studied. The surface charge density generated in both geometries is calculated and compared as their relation determines the different properties of the dielectrophoretic potential for both cuts. The shape of the dielectrophoretic potential is obtained and compared for several distances to the sample. Afterwards other light patterns are studied by the superposition of square spots, and the resulting trapping profiles are analysed. Finally the surface charge densities and trapping profiles for different d/l relations are studied.

This document proceeds from the research for my doctoral thesis titled This thesis is about the subject of Eden or paradise in architecture, to understand its concepts and be able to generate a general model to generate architecture that places us in a virtual way in paradisiacal places, in holidays as well as in daily life. It also seeks to build a system of measure to be used to turn into Eden the previously non “Edenic”. A comparative measuring system to know where we are in relation to how much Eden is present in places to intervene, or project. Eden; Tale, Image and Project. The zones of the thesis that are related to this congress are those related to the use of this tale, idea and image of the collective unconscious, when it comes to projecting a place that locates us physically, mentally and in our mood in paradise.

As a result of the appearance of processors equipped with multiple "cores ", parallel programming, a concept which, moreover, it was not new and it was known for decades, suffered a new impulse, because it was believed they could overcome the technological ceiling had been limiting the performance of this program for years. This impulse has been maintained until today, driven by the need for ever more powerful systems and thanks to the decrease in manufacturing costs. This trend has led to the emergence of new software and languages with components guided specifically to the field of parallel programming. This is the case of Go language, developed by Google and released in 2009. This language is based on concurrency models that make it well suited to tackle developments in parallel nature. However, parallel programming is a complex and heterogeneous field, and developers are reluctant to use new tools to benefit those who already know and are familiar. A good example are those implementations from well-known languages, but parallel programming oriented, and witch follow the guidelines of a standard widely recognized and accepted. This is the case of the OpenMP standard, an application programming interface (API), flexible, portable and scalable, parallel programming oriented, and designed for multi-core architectures. This standard currently has implementations in C, C ++ and Fortran. This project was born as an attempt to combine two concepts: an emerging language, with interesting possibilities in the field of parallel programming, and a reputed and widespread standard, with which programmers are familiar with. The main objective is to develop a set of system libraries (which includes compiler directives or pragmas, runtime libraries and environment variables), supported by the characteristics and concurrency patterns of Go; and that add custom features from the OpenMP standard. The idea is to add features that allow programming in Go language using the syntax OpenMP provides for other languages, like Fortran and C / C ++ (specifically, similar to the latter ), and, in this way, provide Go users with tools for programming parallel structures easily and, in the same way they would using C / C ++.

ABSTRACT John Summerson, in The Classic Language of Architecture, argues that the classic orders used by Roman architects in the decoration of their buildings did not have a structural function, but made buildings expressive. They make them speak. Arthur Schopenhauer affirms that “the goal of Great Architecture is to highlight the struggle between the gravity and rigidity of structural elements”. And Auguste Perret defines Architecture as “the art of making the points of support sing”. The objective of this Doctoral Thesis is to examine the expressive capacity of structure. Following a study of historic structures in the first part of the thesis, we conclude that three categories exist, three ways of expressing Structure. Visible Structures that speak, Concealed Structures that are hidden and Illusory Structures that pretend. The Parthenon and the Sainte Chapelle in Paris are studied in the section on Visible Structures. The Pantheon, the Palace of Charles V, Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London, and other Renaissance and Roman architectures are dealt with in the Concealed Structures section. And, as examples of Illusory Structures, we focus on the Alhambra (The Hall of the Two Sisters, the Comares and the Court of the Lions), Saint Sophia, and other Italian Baroque architectures. In the second part of the Thesis the complete work of Mies van der Rohe is analysed from the perspective of these three categories. The visible, the concealed and the illusory, in the structures of Mies. We study how the structure of the house evolves, from the first houses with the Hidden Structure of the brick wall, to the later houses with Visible Structures and columns, via an intermediate phase of mixed-structure houses with brick walls, where steel first began to make its appearance. We also analyse six structural solutions in the Blocks and Towers: reverberant, expressive or inexpressive Visible Structure vs Concealed Structure with horizontal cladding, reticular cladding or vertical cladding. And finally, we look at the three Illusory Structure solutions that Mies employs in his Pavilions. The methodology employed is divided into four sections: a bibliographic analysis; an analysis in situ of the buildings, which allows us to test, for example, the lighting effects of the fluted column in the Parthenon, or the reverberant effect of the Weissenhofsiedlung columns; a critical analysis of plans and constructive details, which leads us to conclude that the arrangement of panels in the Barcelona Pavilion cancels out the structural centreline, and that the column in the Cantor restaurant is placed with its web perpendicular to the truss, and not parallel to it, as one might expect if one wanted to avail of all the load-bearing capacity of the H beam; and lastly, a numeric and structural analysis, which confirms the oversizing of the Court of the Lions structure in the Alhambra or the oversized structure of Farnsworth House. All of which confirms in this Doctoral Thesis that structure is something more, much more, than a mere conveyor of loads.
