Spectroscopic characterization of the structural changes of polyaniline nanofibers after heating

The thermal behavior of PANI nanofibers doped with beta-naphthalenesulfonic acid (beta-NSA) was investigated and their morphological and structural changes after heating were monitored by SEM, XRD and Raman techniques, respectively. By using electron-scanning microscopy it is possible to verify that the nanofiber morphology is stable and no polymer degradation is observed in thermogravimetric (TG) data up to 200 degrees C. Nevertheless, the heating promotes the formation of cross-linking structures (phenazine and/or oxazine-like rings), that is clearly demonstrated by the presence of bands at ca. 578, 1398, and 1644 cm(-1) in resonance Raman spectra of heated PANI-NSA samples. The most important consequence of the formation of cross-linking structures in PANI-NSA samples is that these samples retain their nanofiber morphology upon HCl doping in contrast to PANI-NSA nanofibers without heating. Distribution of ABCB1 polymorphisms among Brazilians: impact of population admixture

Introduction: Interethnic admixture is a source of cryptic population structure that may lead to spurious genotype-phenotype associations in pharmacogenomic studies. We studied the impact of population stratification on the distribution of ABCB1 polymorphisms (1236C > T, 2677G > T/A and 3435C > T) among Brazilians, a highly admixed population with Amerindian, European and African ancestral roots. Methods: Individual DNA from 320 healthy adults was genotyped with a panel of ancestry informative markers, and the proportions of African component of ancestry (ACA) were estimated. ABCB1 genotypes were determined by the single base extension/termination method. We describe the association between ABCB1 polymorphisms and ACA by fitting a linear proportional odds logistic regression model to the data. Results: The distribution of the ABCB1 2677G > T/A and 3435C > T, but not the 1236C > T, SNPs displayed a significant trend for decreasing frequency of the T alleles and TT genotypes from White to Intermediate to Black individuals. The same trend was observed in the frequency of the T/nonG/T haplotype at the 1236, 2677 and 3435 loci. When the population sample was proportioned in quartiles, according to the individual ACA estimates, the frequency of the T allele and TT genotype at each locus declined progressively from the lowest (< 0.25 ACA) to the highest (> 0.75 ACA) quartile. Linear proportional odds logistic regression analysis confirmed that the odds of having the T allele at each locus decreases in a continuous manner with the increase of the ACA, throughout the ACA range (0.13-0.94) observed in the overall population sample. A significant association was also detected between the individual ACA estimates and the presence of the T/nonG/T haplotype in the overall population. Conclusion: Self-identification according to the racial/color categories proposed by the Brazilian Census is insufficient to properly control for population stratification in pharmacogenomic studies of ABCB1.

Efficient sonothemical synthesis of thiazolidinones from piperonilamine

An efficient multicomponent reaction of arenealdehydes, mercaptoacetic acid and piperonilamine under ultrasound irradiation to afford 2-aryl-3-(piperonylmethyl)-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones is reported. Asymmetric phase-transfer catalytic sulfanylation of some 2-methylsulfinyl cyclanones. Modeling of the stereochemical course of the aldol reaction of (SS,2S)-2-methylsulfinyl-2-methylsulfanylcyclohexanone

Increased diastereoisomeric excesses are obtained for the sulfanylation reactions of some 2-methylsulfinyl cyclanones under phase-transfer catalysis using the chiral catalyst QUIBEC instead of TEBA. The optically pure (SS,2S)-2-methylsulfinyl-2-methylsulfanylcyclohexanone thus prepared reacts with ethyl acetate lithium enolate affording, after hydrolysis, (R)-2-[(ethoxycarbonyl)methyl]-2-hydroxycyclohexanone in 60% ee. Density functional theory calculations (at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level) can successfully explain the origin of this result as the kinetically favored axial attack of the nucleophile to the carbonyl group of the most stable conformer of the cyclanone, in which the CH(3)SO and CH(3)S groups are at the equatorial and axial positions, respectively. Studies on chemo- and diastereo-selectivity of the Diels-Alder reactions of sulfinyltoluquinones with cyclopentadiene

Sulfinyltoluquinones (2a-2c) were submitted to thermal or catalyzed [4+2] cycloaddition reactions with cyclopentadiene. For p-tolylsulfinyltoluquinones (2b) and (2c), almost complete C2-C3-chemo- and unlike-diastereoselectivity was achieved by catalysis with ZnBr(2), yielding adducts 6. Under thermal conditions, Diels-Alder reaction took place at the C5-C6 double bonds of quinones 2a-2c, generating mixtures of diastereoisomeric like- and unlike-adducts 4.

The role of cross-linking structures to the formation of one-dimensional nano-organized polyaniline and their Raman fingerprint

In the present work. the resonance Raman. UV-vis-NIR and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) data of nanorods (about similar to 300 rim in diameter) and nanofibers (about similar to 93 nm in diameter) of PANI are presented and compared. The PANI samples were synthesized in aqueous media with dodecybenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) and beta-naphtalenesulfonic acid (beta-NSA) as dopants, respectively. The presence of hands at 578, 1400 and 1632cm(-1) in the Raman spectra of PANI-NSA and PANI-DBSA shows that the formation of cross-linking structures is a general feature of the PANI chains prepared in micellar media. It is proposed that these structures are responsible for the one-dimensional PANI morphology formation. In addition, the Raman band at 609cm(-1) of PANI fibers is correlated with the extended PANI chain coil formation. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mild and efficient one-pot synthesis of chiral beta-chalcogen amides via 2-oxazoline ring-opening reaction mediated by indium metal

A simple and efficient procedure for the synthesis of beta-seleno and beta-thio amides via the ring-opening reaction of chiral 2-oxazolines in the presence of indium metal has been developed. Features of this method include the following: (i) easily and accessible starting materials; (ii) indium metal is more stable and less expensive then its respective salts; (iii) useful to excellent yields of beta-chalcogen amides derivatives. Synthesis of 4-iodopyrazoles: A Brief Review

This microreview presents an overview of the available methodologies for the synthesis of 4-iodopyrazoles, valuable precursors for the selective construction of highly functionalized organic molecules of synthetic and biological importance.

Synthesis and application of chiral beta-amino disulfides as ligands for the enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes

A new class of chiral beta-amino disulfides was synthesized from readily available and inexpensive starting materials by a straightforward method and their abilities as ligands were examined in the enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes. Enantiomeric excesses of up to 99% have been obtained using 0.5 mol % of the chiral catalysts.

Sesquiterpenes from Xylaria sp., an endophytic fungus associated with Piper aduncum (Piperaceae)

Two new presilphiperfolane sesquiterpenes, 1 and 2, were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of Xylaria sp., obtained from the leaves of Piper aduncum, along with two known eremophilane sesquiterpenes, phaseolinone (3) and phomenone (4). Chemical structures of 1 and 2 were established by analysis of spectroscopic data. The four compounds were tested in vitro for antifungal and cytotoxicity activities using CHO (Chinese hamster ovary). Compounds 1 and 2 did not show any antifungal and cytotoxic activity. Crystal structure and theoretical calculations of Julocrotine, a natural product with antileishmanial activity

Julocrotine, N-(2,6-dioxo-l-phenethyl-piperidin-3-yl)-2-methyl-butyramide, is a potent antiproliferative agent against the promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis (L.). In this work, the crystal structure of Julocrotine was solved by X-ray diffraction, and its geometrical parameters were compared with theoretical calculations at the B3LYP and HF level of theory. IR and NMR spectra also have been obtained and compared with theoretical calculations. IR absorptions calculated with the B3LYP level of theory employed together with the 6-311G+(d,p) basis set, are close to those observed experimentally. Theoretical NMR calculations show little deviation from experimental results. The results show that the theory is in accordance with the experimental data. (C) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Competitive Solar Heating Systems for Residential Buildings (REBUS)

Research on solar combisystems for the Nordic and Baltic countries have been carriedout. The aim was to develop competitive solar combisystems which are attractive tobuyers and to educate experts in the solar heating field.The participants of the projects were the universities: Technical University of Denmark,Dalarna University, University of Oslo, Riga Technical University and Lund Institute ofTechnology, as well as the companies: Metro Therm A/S (Denmark), Velux A/S(Denmark), Solentek AB (Sweden), SolarNor (Norway) and SIA Grandeg (Latvia).The project included education, research, development and demonstration. Theactivities started in 2003 and were finished by the end of 2006. A number of Ph.D.studies in Denmark, Sweden and Latvia, and a post-doc. study in Norway were carriedout. Close cooperation between the researchers and the industry partners ensured thatthe results of the projects can be utilized. The industry partners will soon be able tobring the developed systems into the market.In Denmark and Norway the research and development focused on solarheating/natural gas systems, and in Sweden and Latvia the focus was on solarheating/pellet systems. Additionally, Lund Institute of Technology and University ofOslo studied solar collectors of various types being integrated into the building.

Solar thermal components adapted to common building standards (SCAS)

Pilot versions of a solar heating/natural gas burner system, of a solar heating/pellet burner system and of a façade/roof integrated polymeric collector have been installed in the summer of 2006 in a number of demonstration houses in Denmark, Sweden and Norway.These three new products have been evaluated by means of measurements of the thermal performance and energy savings of the pilot systems in practice and by means of a commercial evaluation.The conclusion of the evaluations is that the products are attractive for the industry partners METRO THERM A/S, Solentek and SOLARNOR. It is expected that the companies will bring the products into the market in 2007.Further, the results of the project have been presented atinternational and national congresses and seminars for the solar heating branch. The congresses and seminars attracted a lot of interested participants.Furthermore, the project results have been published in international congress papers as well as in national journals in the energy field.Consequently, the Nordic solar heating industry will benefit from the project.
