The graft copolymer of high impact polystyrene (HIPS) grafted with malice anhydride (MA) (HIPS-g-MA) was prepared with melt mixing in the presence of a free-radical initiator. The grafting reaction was confirmed by IR analyses and the amount of MA grafted on HIPS was evaluated by a titration method. 1-5 wt% of MA can be grafted on HIPS. HIPS-g-MA is miscible with HIPS. Its anhydride group can react with the PA6 during melt mixing the two components. The compatibility of HIPS-g-MA in the HIPS/PA6 blends was evident. Evidence of reactions in the blends was confirmed in the morphology and mechanical properties of the blends. A significant reduction in domain size was observed because of the compatibilization of HIPS-g-MA in the blends of HIPS and PA6. The tensile mechanical properties of the prepared blends were investigated and the fracture surfaces of the blends were examined by means of the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The improved adhesion in a 16%HIPS/75%PA6 blend with 9%HIPS-g-MA copolymer was detected. The morphology of fibrillar ligaments formed by PA6 connecting HIPS particles was observed.

Gold nanoparticles with size 3-10 nm (diameter) were prepared by the reduction of HAuCl4 in a CTAB/octane + 1-butanol/H2O reverse micelle system using NaBH4 as the reducing agent. The as-formed gold nanoparticle colloid was characterized by UV/vis absorption spectrum and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). Various capping ligands, such as alkylthiols with different chain length and shape, trioctylphosphine (TOP), and pyridine are used to passivate the gold nanoparticles for the purpose of self-organization into superstructures. It is shown that the ligands have a great influence on the self-organization of gold nanoparticles into superlattices, and dodecanethiol C12H25SH is confirmed to be the best ligand for the self-organization. Self-organization of C12H25SH-capped gold nanoparticles into 1D, 2D and 3D superlattices has been observed on the carbon-coated copper grid by TEM without using any selective precipitation process.

The isothermal crystallization kinetics of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block in two poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-PEO segmented copolymers was studied with differential scanning calorimetry. The Avrami equation failed to describe the overall crystallization process, but a modified Avrami equation, the Q equation, did. The crystallizability of the PET block and the different lengths of the PEO block exerted strong influences on the crystallization process, the crystallinity, and time final morphology of the PEO block. The mechanism of nucleation and the growth dimension of the PEG block were different because of the crystallizability of time PET block and the compositional heterogeneity. The crystallization of the PEO block was physically constrained by the microstructure of time PET crystalline phase, which resulted in a lower crystallization rate. However, this influence became weak with the increase in the soft-block length. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The lasing properties of a soluble conjugated polymer, Poly[1,8-octanedioxy-2,6-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene-1,2-ethenylene-1,2-phenylene-1,2-ethenylene-3,5-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene] (CNMBC-Ph) in chloroform solution were investigated. The third harmonic radiation of a Nd:YAG laser was used as the pump light. The stimulated emission with a linewidth of 15 nm was observed in the blue wavelength region with the peak at 450 nm. The threshold pulse peak power was about 2.8 MW/cm(2). The energy conversion yield of the laser was estimated to be about 3.4%. The maximum peak power of the laser output pulse reached 40 kW. Polyamide (PA)1010 is blended with a saturated polyolefin elastomer, ethylene-cu-olefin copolymer (EOCP). To improve the compatibility of PA1010 with EOCP, different grafting rates of EOCP with maleic anhydride (MA) are used. The reaction between PA1010 and EOCP-g-MA during extrusion is verified through an extraction test. Mechanical properties, such as notched Izod impact strength, elongation at break, etc., are examined as a function of grafting rate and weight fraction of elastomer. It was found that in the scale of grafting rate (0.13-0.92 wt %), 0.51 wt % is an extreme point for several mechanical properties. Elastomer domains of PA1010/ EOCP-g-MA blends show a finer and more uniform dispersion in the matrix than that of PA1010/EOCP blends. For the same grafting rate, the average sizes of elastomer particles are almost independent on the contents of elastomer, but for different grafting rates, the particle sizes are decreased with increasing grafting rate. The copolymer formed during extrusion strengthens the interfacial adhesion and acts as an emulsifier to prevent the aggregation of elastomer in the process of blending. The binary blends of polyamide 1010 (PA1010) with the high-impact polystyrene (HIPS)/maleic anhydride (MA) graft copolymer (HIPS-g-MA) and with HIPS were prepared using a wide composition range. Different blend morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy according to the nature and content of PA1010 used. Compared with the PA1010/HIPS binary blends, the domain sizes of dispersed-phase particles in PA1010/HIPS-g-MA blends were much smaller than that in PA1010/HIPS blends at the same compositions. It was found that the tensile properties of PA1010/HIPS-g-MA blends were obviously better than that of PA 1010/HIPS blends. Wide-angle xray diffraction analyses were performed to confirm that the number of hydrogen bonds in the PA1010 phase decreased in the blends of PA1010/HIPS-g-MA. These behaviors could be attributed to the chemical interactions between the two components and good dispersion in PA1010/HIPS-g-MA blends.

The graft copolymerization of butyl acrylate onto poly(vinyl alcohol) with eerie ammonium nitrate as redox initiator in a aqueous medium has been investigated. The formation of graft copolymer was confirmed by means of IR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The percentage of mononer conversion and percentage of grafting varied with concentrations of initiator, nitric acid, monomer, macromolecular backbone (X-n = 1750, M = 80 000), reaction temperature and reaction time. Some inorganic salts and organic solvents have a great influence upon grafting. The reaction mechanism has been explored, and rate equations for the reaction are established. Two new blue light-emitting PPV-based conjugated copolymers containing both an electron-withdrawing unit (triazole-TAZ) and electron-rich moieties (carbazole-CAR and bicarbazole-BCAR) were prepared by Wittig condensation polymerization between the triazole diphosphonium salt and the corresponding dialdehyde monomers. Their structures and properties were characterized by FT-IR, TGA, DSC, UV-Vis, PL spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements. The resulting copolymers are soluble in common organic solvents and thermally stable with a T-g of 147degreesC for TAZ-CAR-PPV and of 157degreesC for TAZ-BCAR-PPV. The maximum photoluminescence wavelengths of TAZ-CAR-PPV and TAZ-BCAR-PPV film appear at 460 nm and 480 nm, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry measurement demonstrates that TAZ-BCAR-PPV has good electrochemical reversibility, while TAZ-CAR-PPV exhibits the irreversible redox process. The triazole unit was found to be an effective pi-conjugation interrupter and can play the rigid spacer role in determining the emission colour of the resulting copolymer.

A new type of tyrosinase biosensor was developed for the detection of phenolic compounds, based on the immobilization of tyrosinase in a sol-gel-derived composite matrix that is composed of titanium oxide sol and a grafting copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) with 4-vinylpyridine. Tyrosinase entrapped in the composite matrix can retain its activity to a large extent owing to the good biocompatibility of the matrix. The parameters of the fabrication process and the variables of the experimental conditions for the enzyme electrode were optimized. The resulting sensor exhibited a fast response (20 s), high sensitivity (145.5 muA mmol(-1) 1) and good storage stability. A detection limit of 0.5 muM catechol was obtained at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3.

Individual hydrophobically modified ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (HM-EHEC) molecules under different conditions were elongated using a new atomic force microscope (AFM) based technique-single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS). The critical concentration of HM-EHEC for micelle-like clusters at a solid/liquid interface was around 0.8 wt %, which is lower than that in solution. The different mechanical properties of HM-EHEC below and above the critical concentration were displayed on force-extension curves. Through a comparison with unmodified hydroxyethyl cellulose, substituent-induced effects on nanomechanical features of HM-EHEC were investigated. Because of hydrophobic interactions and cooperative binding with the polymer, surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) dramatically influence the elastic properties of HM-EHEC below the critical concentration, and further addition of SDS reduces the interactions between the hydrophobic groups and the surfactant.

In this presentation, a reverse micelle technique was described to create colloid gold nanoparticles and their self-organization into superlattices. Gold nanoparticles were prepared by the reduction of HAuCL4 in CTAB/octane + 1-butanol/H2O reverse micelle system using NaBH4 as reducing agent. Dodecanethiol (C12H25SH) was used to passivate the gold nanoparticles immediately after formation of the gold colloid. After re-dispersing in toluene under ultrasonication, a supernatant containing nearly monodispersed dodecanethiol-capped gold nanoparticles was obtained. Self-organization of the gold nanoparticles into 1D, 2D and 3D superlattices was observed on the carbon-coated copper grid by TEM. UV-vis absorption spectra were also used to characterize the gold colloids with and without dodecanethiol capping. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in poly(ethylene terephthalate)poly(ethylene oxide) (PETPEO) segmented copolymer and PEO homopolymer has been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry, as well as transmission electron microscope. The kinetics of PEO in copolymer and PEO homopolymer under nonisothermal crystallization condition has been analyzed by Ozawa equation. The results show that Ozawa equation only describes the crystallization behavior of PEO-6000 homopolymer successfully, but fails to describe the whole crystallization process of PEO in copolymer because the secondary crystallization in the later stage could not be neglected. Due to the constraint of PET segments imposed on the PEO segments, a distinct two stage of crystallization of PEO in copolymer has been investigated by using Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny to deal with the nonisothermal crystallization data. In the case of PEO-6000 homopolymer, good linear relation for the whole crystallization process is obtained owing to the secondary crystallization does not occur under our experimental condition. A peroxidase was extracted from Chinese soybean seed coat, and its thermostability and acid-stability were characterized. This peroxidase was immobilized into a self-gelatinizable grafting copolymer of polyvinyl alcohol with 4-vinylpyridine(PVA-g-PVP) to construct an acid-stable hydrogen peroxide biosensor. The effect of pH was studied for optimum analytical performances by amperometric and spectro-photometric methods, also the K-m(app) and the stability of the soybean peroxidase-based biosensor are discussed. At pH 3.0, the soybean peroxidase maintained its bioactivity and the enzyme electrode had a linear range from 0.01 to 6.2 mM with a detection limit of 1.0 x 10(-7) M. In addition, the main characteristics of different hydrogen peroxide sensors were compared.

A series of novel polyarylethersulfone (AB)(n) block copolymers with different segment lengths have been synthesized by nucleophilic solution polycondensation of phenoxide-terminated and fluorine-terminated oligomers; random copolymers have been prepared over the whole composition ranges. The structures of the resultant copolymers have been confirmed by FTIR, C-13 NMR spectra and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared with two homopolymers and random copolymers, the block copolymers of this study possess excellent thermal stability (5% thermal decomposition under nitrogen atmosphere above 500 C) and high glass transition temperatures, and have a wide melt-processing temperature range. They may become a new class of mouldable high performance thermoplastics. (C) 2001 Society of Chemical Industry.
