The effect of Al(PO3)(3) content on physical, chemical and optical properties of fluorophosphate glasses for 2 mu m application, such as thermal stability, chemical durability, surface hardness, absorption spectra and emission spectra, is investigated. With the increment of Al(PO3)(3) content, the thermal stability characterized by the gap of T-g and T,, increases first and then decreases, and reaches the maximum level containing 5 mol% Al(PO3)(3) content. The density and chemical durability decrease monotonously with the introduction of Al(PO3)(3) content increasing, while the refractive index and surface hardness increase. Above properties of fluorophosphate glasses are also compared with fluoride glasses and phosphate glasses. The Judd-Ofelt parameters, absorption and emission cross sections are discussed based on the absorption spectra of Tm-doped glasses. The emission spectra are also measured and the 1.8 mu m fluorescence of the sample is obvious indicating that it is suitable to 2 mu m application. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High-quality 2at%-doped Yb:CaF2 and Yb,Na:CaF2 single crystals with diameter of 76mm were grown by the temperature gradient technique. For the first time, distribution coefficients (KO) of Yb in the two crystals were determined to be 1.07 and 0.91, respectively, by measuring the Yb concentrations at the growth starting position in the as-grown boules. Absorption and emission spectra of the two different crystals were measured at room temperature. Experimental results show that Na+ ions codoping with Yb3+ as charge compensators make Yb3+ ions in CaF2 lattice to be a quasi-single-center system, and greatly suppress the deoxidization of Yb3+ to Yb2+ (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Sm3+-doped yttrium aluminum perovskite (YAP) single crystal was grown by Czochralski (CZ) method. The absorption and fluorescence spectra along the crystallographic axis b were measured at room temperature. Judd-Ofelt theory was used to calculate the intensity parameters (Omega(t)), the spontaneous emission probability, the branching ratio and the radiative lifetime of the state (4)G(5/2). The peak emission cross-sections were also estimated at 567, 607, and 648 nm wavelengths. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Gd2SiO5 (GSO) single crystal codoped with Yb3+ and Er3+ (Abbr. as Er:Yb:GSO) was successfully grown by the Czochralski (CZ) method for the first time and the spectral characteristics were investigated. The absorption and fluorescence spectra were measured. The emission lifetime of the I-4(13/2)-Er-level was measured to be 5.84ms and the emission cross-section at 1529nm was calculated to be 1.03 x 10(-20) cm(2). The results indicate that Er:Yb:GSO is a potential laser material at similar to 1. 55 mu m wavelength region. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Yb: YAlO3 (YAP) (15 at %) and Yb: Y3Al5O12 (YAG)(15 at %) have been grown using the Czochralski method. Their absorption and fluorescence spectra were measured at room temperature and important spectroscopic parameters were calculated. Through the comparison of spectroscopic parameters of Yb:YAP and Yb: YAG, all results indicate that 15 at % Yb:YAP crystal is a potential candidate used for compact, efficient thin chip lasers when the laser output wavelength is 1012 or 103 8 nm. The effects of Na+ doping level on the thermal conductivities, absorption and emission spectra, and fluorescence lifetimes of Yb3+ ,Na+ :CaF2 crystals were systematically studied. Sites structure, covalent force, and crystal field strength of Yb3+ :CaF2 crystals were markedly varied by codoping Na+ as charge compensator. The 2.0at% Yb3+ and 3.0at% Na+-codoped CaF2 crystal was demonstrated to operate in diode-pumped passively mode-locking scheme. Transform-limited 1 ps laser pulses were obtained, showing the crystal capable of producing ultra-short laser pulses. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Yb (10%):GGG and Yb (30%): GGG crystals have been grown by the Czochralski method. The chemical compositions are: Yb1.07Gd1.74Ga5.19O12 and Yb0.33Gd1.47Ga5.2O12. The absorption and emission spectra of Yb:GGG crystal at room temperature have been measured. The spectroscopic parameters of Yb:GGG and Yb:YAG have been compared. Optical absorption spectra of Yb:GGG show 4f-4f transitions related to Gd3+ ion around 300 nm, and also an onset of charge transfer (CT) transitions from oxygen ligands to Gd3+ or Yb3+ cations below 240nm. The CT absorption of Yb3+ is largely overlapped by that of Gd3+ ions. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

For the first time, the effect of Na+ on crystal structure, valence state of Yb ions, spectroscopic properties of YbF3-doped CaF2 system was systematically studied. Na+ can greatly suppress the deoxidization of Yb3+ to Yb2+. Absorption and emission spectra showed codoping Na+ with different Na:Yb ratios can modulate the spectroscopy and photoluminescence properties of Yb3+ ions in CaF2 lattice in a large scope. The emission lifetime and quantum efficiency of Yb3+ in CaF2 were greatly enhanced by the codopant of Na+. The potential laser performances of the new Yb, Na-codoped CaF2 crystals were predicted. For the first time, a high optical quality Yb3+-doped lutetium pyrosilicate laser crystal Lu2Si2O7 (LPS) was grown by the Czochralski (Cz) method. The segregation coefficient of ytterbium ion in Yb:LPS crystal detected by the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (TCP-AES) method is equal to 0.847. X-ray powder diffraction result confirms the C2/m phase monoclinic space group of the grown crystal and the peaks corresponding to different phases were indexed. The absorption and fluorescence spectra, as well as fluorescence decay lifetime of Yb3+ ion in LPS have been investigated. The absorption and fluorescence cross-sections of the transitions F-2(7/2) <-> F-2(5/2) of Yb3+ ion in LPS crystal have been determined. The advantages of the Yb:LPS crystal including high crystal quality, quasi-four-level laser operating scheme, high absorption cross-sections (1.33 x 10(-2) cm(2)) and particularly broad emission bandwidth (similar to 62 nm) indicated that the Yb:LPS crystal seemed to be a promising candidate used as compact, efficient thin chip lasers when LD is pumped at 940 and 980 nm due to its low-symmetry monoclinic structure and single crystallographic site. Gamma-rays radiation effects on Ce:YAG crystals grown by Czochralski (Cz) and temperature gradient techniques (TGT) have been studied by means of optical absorption and luminescence spectra. Valence of Ce3+ ion changes during the gamma-ray irradiation process and this result indicates Ce4+ ion may exist in both Cz-Ce:YAG and TGT-Ce:YAG crystals. Thermally stimulated luminescence measurements reveal intense thermoluminescence peaks in gamma-irradiated Ce:YAG crystals and trap parameters were calculated by general-order kinetics expression.
