The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of infrared diode laser phototherapy (LP) on tissues of the submandibular gland (SMG) and parotid gland (PG). Wistar rats were randomly divided into experimental (A and B) and control (C) groups. A diode laser, 808 nm wavelength, in continuous wave mode, was applied to the PG, SMG and sublingual gland in the experimental groups on two consecutive days. The doses were 4 J/cm(2) and 8 J/cm(2), and total energy was 7 J and 14 J, respectively. The power output (500 mW) and power density (277 mW/cm(2)) were the same for both experimental groups. In order to visualize the area irradiated by the infrared laser, we used a red pilot beam (650 nm) with 3 mW maximum power for the experimental groups. For the control group, the red pilot beam was the only device used. The SMG and PG were removed after 1 week of the first irradiation. Total protein concentration, amylase, peroxidase, catalase and lactate dehydrogenase assays were performed, as well as histological analysis. Statistical tests revealed significant increase in the total protein concentration for groups A and B in the parotid glands (P < 0.05). Based on the results of this study, LP altered the total protein concentration in rats` parotid glands.

This in vitro study evaluated the effect of erosive pH cycling on the percentage of surface micro-hardness change (%SMHC) and wear of different restorative materials and bovine enamel restored with these materials. Eighty enamel specimens were randomly divided into eight groups according to the restorative materials and immersion media used: GI/GV-resin-modifled glass-ionomer, GII/GVI-conventional glass-ionomer, GIII/GVII-resin composite and GIV/GVIII-amalgam. Over a period of seven days, groups GI to GIV were immersed in a cola drink (ERO) for 5 minutes, 3x/day and kept in artificial saliva between erosive cycles. Groups GV to GVIII were immersed in artificial saliva (SAL) throughout the entire experimental period (control). Data were tested for significant differences using ANOVA and Tukey`s tests (p < 0.05). For %SMHC, considering the restorative materials, no significant differences were detected among the materials and immersion media. Mean wear was higher for the resin modified glass ionomer cement when compared to conventional cement, but those materials did not significantly differ from the others. For enamel analyses, erosive pH cycling promoted higher wear and %SMHC compared to saliva. There were no significant differences in wear and %SMHC of enamel around the different restorative materials, regardless of the distance from the restorative material (50, 150 or 300 mu m). In conclusion, there were only subtle differences among the materials, and these differences were not able to protect the surrounding enamel from erosion.

MMPs are endopeptidases that play a pivotal role in ECM turnover. RECK is a single membrane-anchored MMP-regulator. Here, we evaluated the temporal and spatial expression of MMP-2, MMP-9, and RECK during alveolar bone regeneration. The maxillary central incisor of Wistar rats was extracted and the animals were killed at 1, 3, 7, 10, 14, 21, 28, and 42 days post-operatively (n = 3/period). The hemimaxillae were collected, demineralized and embedded in paraffin. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed by the immunoperoxidase technique with polyclonal antibodies. On day 1, polymorphonuclear cells in the blood clot presented mild immunolabeling for MMPs. During bone remodeling, osteoblasts facing new bone showed positive staining for gelatinases and RECK in all experimental periods. MMPs were also found in the connective tissue and endothelial cells. Our results show for the first time that inactive and/or active forms of MMP-2, MMP-9 and RECK are differentially expressed by osteogenic and connective cells during several events of alveolar bone regeneration. This may be important for the replacement of the blood clot by connective tissue, and in the formation, maturation and remodeling of new bone.

Outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is characterized by a high degree of variability which has often been difficult to capture in traditional outcome studies. The purpose of this study was to describe patterns of community integration 2-5 years after TBI. Participants were 208 patients admitted to a Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit between 1991-1995 in Brisbane, Australia. The design comprised retrospective data collection and questionnaire follow-up by mail. Mean follow-up was 3.5 years. Demographic, injury severity and functional status variables were retrieved from hospital records. Community integration was assessed using the Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ), and vocational status measured by a self administered questionnaire. Data was analysed using cluster analysis which divided the data into meaningful subsets. Based on the CIQ subscale scores of home, social and productive integration, a three cluster solution was selected, with groups labelled as working (n = 78), balanced (n = 46) and poorly integrated (n = 84). Although 38% of the sample returned to a high level of productive activity and 22% achieved a balanced lifestyle, overall community integration was poor for the remainder. This poorly integrated group had more severe injury characterized by longer periods of acute care and post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) and greater functional disability on discharge. These findings have implications for service delivery prior to and during the process of reintegration after brain injury.

Background: The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) has been validated and used extensively in screening for depression in new mothers, both in English speaking and non-English speaking communities. While some studies have reported the use of the EPDS with Fathers, none have validated it for this group, and thus the appropriate cut-off score for screening for depression or anxiety caseness for this population is not known. Method: Couples were recruited antenatally and interviewed at six weeks postpartum. EPDS scores and distress caseness (depression or anxiety disorders) for 208 fathers and 230 mothers were determined using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule. Results: Analyses of the EPDS for fathers using distress caseness (depression or anxiety disorders) as the criterion shows that a cut-off of 5/6 has optimum receiver operating characteristics. Furthermore acceptable reliability (split-half and internal consistency) and validity (concurrent) coefficients were obtained. For mothers the optimum cut-off screening value to detect distress caseness was 7/8. Item analysis revealed that fathers endorsed seven of the ten items at lower rates to mothers, with the most significant being that referring to crying. Conclusions: The EPDS is a reliable and valid measure of mood in fathers. Screening for depression or anxiety disorders in fathers requires a two point lower cut-off than screening for depression or anxiety in mothers, and we recommend this cut-off to he 5/6. The isotope composition of Ph is difficult to determine accurately due to the lack of a stable normalisation ratio. Double and triple-spike addition techniques provide one solution and presently yield the most accurate measurements. A number of recent studies have claimed that improved accuracy and precision could also be achieved by multi-collector ICP-MS (MC-ICP-MS) Pb-isotope analysis using the addition of Tl of known isotope composition to Pb samples. In this paper, we verify whether the known isotope composition of Tl can be used for correction of mass discrimination of Pb with an extensive dataset for the NIST standard SRM 981, comparison of MC-ICP-MS with TIMS data, and comparison with three isochrons from different geological environments. When all our NIST SRM 981 data are normalised with one constant Tl-205/Tl-203 of 2.38869, the following averages and reproducibilities were obtained: Pb-207/Pb-206=0.91461+/-18; Pb-208/Ph-206 = 2.1674+/-7; and (PbPh)-Pb-206-Ph-204 = 16.941+/-6. These two sigma standard deviations of the mean correspond to 149, 330, and 374 ppm, respectively. Accuracies relative to triple-spike values are 149, 157, and 52 ppm, respectively, and thus well within uncertainties. The largest component of the uncertainties stems from the Ph data alone and is not caused by differential mass discrimination behaviour of Ph and Tl. In routine operation, variation of sample introduction memory and production of isobaric molecular interferences in the spectrometer's collision cell currently appear to be the ultimate limitation to better reproducibility. Comparative study of five different datasets from actual samples (bullets, international rock standards, carbonates, metamorphic minerals, and sulphide minerals) demonstrates that in most cases geological scatter of the sample exceeds the achieved analytical reproducibility. We observe good agreement between TIMS and MC-ICP-MS data for international rock standards but find that such comparison does not constitute the ultimate. test for the validity of the MC-ICP-MS technique. Two attempted isochrons resulted in geological scatter (in one case small) in excess of analytical reproducibility. However, in one case (leached Great Dyke sulphides) we obtained a true isochron (MSWD = 0.63) age of 2578.3 +/- 0.9 Ma, which is identical to and more precise than a recently published U-Pb zircon age (2579 3 Ma) for a Great Dyke websterite [Earth Planet. Sci. Lett. 180 (2000) 1-12]. Reproducibility of this age by means of an isochron we regard as a robust test of accuracy over a wide dynamic range. We show that reliable and accurate Pb-isotope data can be obtained by careful operation of second-generation MC-ICP magnetic sector mass spectrometers. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. A sensitive method using HPLC with fluorescence detection has been established for the measurement of porphyrins in biological materials. The assay recoveries were 88.0 +/- 1.8% for protoporphyrin IX in the blood, and ranged from 98.3 +/- 2.7% to 111.1 +/- 7.4% for various porphyrins in the urine. This method was employed to investigate the altered porphyrin profiles in rats after a single dose of various arsenicals including soluble sodium arsenate and sodium arsenite, and the relatively insoluble calcium arsenite, calcium arsenate and arsenic-contaminated soils at dose rates of 5 mg/kg or 0.5 mg/kg body weight. Porphyrin concentrations increased within 24-48hr after the arsenic treatment in blood and urine. Protoporphyrin IX is the predominant porphyrin in the blood. In rats administered 5 mg As(III)/kg body weight, protoporphyrin IX concentration elevated to 123% of them control values in rats, 24 hr after the treatment. Higher increases were recorded in the urinary protoporphyrin IX (253% at 24 hr; 397% on day 2), uroporphyrin (121% at 24 hr; 208% on day 2) and coproporphyrin 111 (391% at 24 hr; 304% on day 2), while there was no significant increase (109% on day 3) observed in the urinary coproporphyrin I excretion. In rats administered 5 mg As(V)/kg, urinary excretion of protoporphyrin IX, uroporphyrin, coproporphyrin Ill and coproporphyrin I elevated to the maximum levels by 48 hr with the corresponding percentage values compared to the control being 177%, 158%, 224% and 143%, respectively. In rats dosed with 5 mg As(III)/kg, the increases (expressed as % of the control values) of protoporphyrin IX in the blood were in the order: sodium arsenite (144%) > sodium arsenate (125%) greater than or equal to calcium arsenite (123%) > calcium arsenate. In contrast, there was no significant increase of protoporphyrin K when the six arsenic-contaminated cattlei dip soils and nine copper chrome arsenate (CCA-contaminated) soils were administered to the rats. Probable explanations are discussed.

Because of the increasing demand of the industry for the production of essential oils, studies highlight the genetic variability of Piper hispidinervum and P. aduncum species according to their patterns of spatial distribution, showing the Amazon region as the source of superior genetic material in the production of safrole and dillapiole. Thus, the objective this study was to characterize the morphology and the phytochemistry of Piper hispidinervum and P. aduncum populations in the Active Germplasm Bank of Embrapa Acre to generate subsidies for the genetic improvement of these species. The results showed that the average values for leaf width and length were 141.67 and 48.04 mm, and petioles length and diameter measurements were 2.83 and 1.78 mm for P. hispidinervum and 189.22; 67.74; 6.03 and 2.22 mm for P. aduncum respectively. The average height and canopy volume measurements were 2.39 m and 6.30 m3 and 2.70 m and 7.78 m3 respectively for each species. For P. hispidinervum, the population with higher performance indried yield and content of safrole was population 02, with 3.9%, and the population 04 showed 94.3% safrole content, both with genetic material from the region of Acrelândia and Plácido de Castro. To P. aduncum, the populations with better performance were 207, 208 and 209, forming a homogeneous group with dried yield average of 3.8% and dillapiol content of 84-85%. Such populations are indicated for selection in breeding program of these species due to better performance.
