The L-dopa is the immediate precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Unlike dopamine, L-dopa easily enters the central nervous system and is used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. A sensitive and selective method is presented for the voltammetric determination of L-dopa in pharmaceutical formulations using a carbon paste electrode modified with trinuclear ruthenium ammine complex [(NH3)(5)Ru-III-O-Ru-IV(NH3)(4)-O-Ru-III(NH3)(5)](6+) (Ru-red) incorporated in NaY zeolite. The parameters which influence on the electrode response (paste composition, potential scan rate, pH and interference) were also investigated. The optimum conditions were found to an electrode composition (m/m) of 25% zeolite containing 6.7% Ru, 50% graphite and 25% mineral oil in acetate buffer at pH 4.8. Voltammetric peak currents showed a linear response for L-dopa concentration in the range between 1.2 x 10(-4) and 1.0 x 10(-2) Mol l(-1) (r = 0.9988) with a detection limit of 8.5 x 10(-5) mol l(-1). The variation coefficient for a 1.0 x 10(-3) mol l(-1) L-dopa (n = 10) was 5.5%. The results obtained for L-dopa in pharmaceutical formulations (tablet) was in agreement with compared official method. In conclusion, this study has illustrated that the proposed electrode modified with Ru-red incorporated zeolite is suitable valuable for selective measurements of L-dopa. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The photoelectrochemical degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) was investigated using titanium dioxide thin-film photoelectrode. The effects of different supporting electrolytes, pH, applied potential and PNP concentration were examined and discussed. Complete photodegradation was obtained in perchlorate medium at pH 2 when the photoanode was biased at +1.0 V (versus SCE) during a 3-h experiment. Under these conditions, carbon removal of approximately 60% was achieved. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A sensitive method based on square wave voltammetry is described for the quantitative determination of elemental sulfur, disulfide and mercaptan in gasoline using a mercury film electrode. These sulfur compounds can be quantified by direct dissolution of gasoline in a supporting electrolyte followed by subsequent voltammetric measurement. The supporting electrolyte is 1.4 mol L-1 sodium acetate and No acetic acid in methanol. Chemical and optimum operational conditions for the formation of the mercury film were analyzed in this study. The values obtained were a 4.3 mu m thickness for the mercury film, a 1000 rpm rotation frequency, -0.9 V applied potential and 600 s depositing time. Voltammetric measurements were obtained using square wave voltammetry with detection limits of the 3.0 x 10(-9), 1.6 x 10(-7) and 4.9 x 10(-7) mol L-1 for elemental sulfur, disulfide and mercaptan, respectively. A nickel modified boron doped diamond (Ni-BDD) electrode and nickel foil electrode were used in the determination of methanol in alkaline solutions. The Ni-BDD electrode was electrodeposited from a 1 mM Ni(NO(3))(2) solution (pH 5), followed by repeat cycling in KOH. Subsequent analysis utilised the Ni(OH)(2)/NiOOH redox couple to electrocatalyse the oxidation of methanol. Methanol was determined to limits of 0.3 mM with a sensitivity of 110 nA/mM at the Ni-BDD electrode. The foil electrode was less sensitive achieving a limit of 1.6 mM and sensitivity of 27 nA/mM. SEM analysis of the electrodes found the Ni-BDD to be modified by a quasi-random microparticle array.

A mercury-sensitive chemically modified electrode (CME) based on modified silica gel-containing carbon paste was developed. The functional group attached to the silica gel surface was 3-(2-thiobenzimidazolyl)propyl, which is able to complex mercury ions. This electrode was applied to the determination of mercury(II) ions in aqueous solution. The mercury was chemically preconcentrated on the CME prior to voltammetric determination by anodic stripping in the differential-pulse mode. A calibration graph covering the concentration range from 0.08 to 2 mg l-1 was constructed. The precision for six determinations of 0.122 and 0.312 mg l-1 Hg(II) was 3.2 and 2.9% (relative standard deviation), respectively. The detection limit for a 5-min preconcentration period was 0.013 mg l-1. A study for foreign ions was also made.

This paper describes the construction of an electrode of the second kind, Pt\Hg\Hg-2(Bzt)(2)\graphite, sensitive to benzoate ion (Bzt). The electrode provides a near-Nernstian response (-58.19 mV/decade at 25 degrees C) to benzoate ion in the concentration range 1.11 x 10(-1) to 5.00 x 10(-4) M at pH 7.0 and ionic strength 0.500-3.00M, adjusted with NaClO4. The electrode is easily constructed, shows a fast response time, is low in cost, has excellent response stability, and has a lifetime greater than 24 months. which is much longer than those earlier reported for other systems. A further salient feature of the electrode is that perchlorate does not interfere in its response, which may be advantageous in the analysis of perchloric acid-treated samples. It was applied to the determination of sodium benzoate in some commercial expectorating medicinal syrups using the standard additions method. The results obtained by the proposed procedure compare very favorably with those obtained through the reference method recommended by the United States Pharmacopeia. (C) 1998 Academic Press.

A highly sensitive adsorptive stripping procedure for trace measurement of the anticancer drug tamoxifen is described. The method is based on controlled adsorptive accumulation of the drug at an electrochemically treated glassy carbon electrode, followed by chronopotentiometric measurement of the surface species. The chronopotentiometric operation effectively addresses the large background contribution inherent to the glassy carbon electrode to yield a detection limit of 4 x 10(-10) M after 4 min preconcentration. The adsorptive stripping response is evaluated with respect to electrode type and conditioning, accumulation potential and lime, stripping current, pH, drug concentration, potential interferences, and other variables. Applicability to urine samples is illustrated. (C) 1997 Elsevier B.V. B.V.

A mercury-sensitive chemically modified graphite paste electrode was constructed by incorporating modified silica gel into a conventional graphite paste electrode. The functional group attached to the (3-chloropropyl) silica gel surface was 2-mercaptoimidazole, giving a new product denoted by 3-(2-thioimidazolyl)propyl silica gel, which is able to complex mercury ions. Mercury was chemically adsorbed on the modified graphite paste electrode containing 3-(2-thioimidazolyl)propyl silica (TIPSG GPE) by immersion in a Hg(II) solution, and the resultant surface was characterized by cyclic and differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry. One cathodic peak at 0.1 V and other anodic peak at 0.34 V were observed on scanning the potential from -0.1 to 0.8 V (0.01 M KNO3; ν = 2.0 mV s-1 νs. Ag/AgCl). The anodic peak at 0.34 V show an excellent sensitivity for Hg(II) ions in the presence of several foreign ions. A calibration graph covering the concentration range from 0.02 to 2 mg L-1 was obtained. The detection limit was estimated to be 5 μg L-1. The precision for six determinations of 0.05 and 0.26 mg L-1 Hg(II) was 3.0 and 2.5% (relative standard deviation), respectively. The method can be used to determine the concentration of mercury(II) in natural waters contaminated by this metal. 2005 © The Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry.

Pyrazinamide (Pyrazinecarboxamide-PZA) is a drug that is used to treatment tuberculosis. In the present work, the voltammetric behavior of PZA was studied using a screen-printed modified electrode (SPCE). The modified electrode was constructed using poly-histidine films, and it showed an electrocatalytic effect, thus promoting a decrease in PZA reduction potential and improving the voltammetric response. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques have been employed in order to elucidate of the electrodic reaction. The results allowed the proposal that in the PZA reduction, a further chemical reaction occurs that corresponds to a second-order process which is subsequent to the electrode reaction. In addition, a sensitive voltammetric method was developed, and it was successfully applied for PZA determination in human urine samples. The best response was found using SPCE modified with poly-histidine prepared by histidine monomer electropolymerization (SPCE/EPH). The electroanalytical performance of the SPCE/EPH was investigated by linear sweep (LSV), differential pulse (DPV), and square wave voltammetry (SWV). A linear relationship between peak current and PZA concentrations was obtained from 9.0 × 10-7 to 1.0 × 10-4 mol L-1 by using DPV. The limit of detection at 5.7 × 10 -7 mol L-1 was estimated, and a relative standard deviation of the 5.0 × 10-6 mol L-1 of PZA of 10 measurement was 3.7%. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
